The data represents approximately 15,000 policies sold by such top-rated carriers as Travelers, Safeco, the Hartford, and ASI/Ark Royal. What to do? Shop around. Dog Lovers Beg for a Park
A
nthem Needs a Dog Park. You say there is one already? Sorry, you are wrong. New River has a dog rescue and a plot of desert it tries to pass off as a park. For 13 years, dog owners have been gathering at ball fields and parks to run their dogs off leash. Recently, the ACC hired MCSO to ticket for this offense. The ticket is a Class 2 misdemeanor and can have a fine of up to $750, plus possible jail time. [See Page 19.] Why don’t the dog owners simply go to New River? Because they live here. They want [a dog park] here, with grass, shade and a bench or two. They don’t want a park with gravel that will burn and tear up their dogs’ paws. They don’t want a dusty park that may infect their animals with Valley fever. They don’t want to pay a membership fee and use entry codes. [Dogs] need exercise. Dogs need to be safe from coyotes and javelina roaming the area. Pedestrians need to feel safe knowing off-leash dogs are confined. A dog park is a necessity to keep a community competitive and attractive. It will draw future homeowners looking for a complete neighborhood. The ACC is going to make a decision on what new facilities should be funded. There are several choices: a BMX track, gardens, hiking trailheads… These would please small groups. group of Anthem pet owners are on a mission to create an off-leash dog park in Anthem, after the Community Council stepped up its efforts to enforce Maricopa County’s leash law.

Those efforts ended when Council sent the group packing and Anthem Pets created its award-winning, ecofriendly dog park at Jackass Acres on the frontage road just outside Anthem’s borders. The park has more than 300 members. No Simple Solution A patch of grass sounds simple enough, but any park that allows dogs costs more because of fencing, permits, EPA regulations, plumbing, planning, hardware and maintenance. Scottsdale and Gilbert, two cities which provide fee-free pet parks, spend roughly $100,000 annually on maintenance. Both require weekly closures for mowing and irrigation. Still, proponents feel that with Anthem’s long list of amenities, including a 63-acre park with fishing lake, athletic fields, sand volleyball courts, hockey rink and skate park, they are entitled to some dedicated space for their dogs to run, fetch, chase and roll. io
