Dog-friendly hotels — not so much. I knew it was only a matter of time before our aging air conditioning units called it quits. he Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution and the beginning of the Vietnam War. As such, Greater Anthem residents who served in Vietnam are asked to step forward so that they might be honored as Grand Marshals in the DMV Parade 2014.
“We’d like to give our Vietnam veterans the parade they never received,” said parade chair Mary Ann Derryberry. Last year’s parade included nearly 100 military, civic and historic units. he Anthem Community Council voted unanimously to approve an agreement with EPCOR allowing Anthem to construct a park over EPCOR’s underground recharge facility. [See, “West Side Park Back on Track,” In&Out, May 15, 2014] With the license agreement in place, Environmental Planning Group (EPG) can proceed with development of the park’s design. The board previously approved $115,000 for the design process, of which only $8,125 has been spent to date.
Shearer responded to Jerich’s concerns: “…As we move forward, the enhancement fund will grow. Our projections indicate there will be funds. Opportunity Way Park will not bring the fund to a zero balance.” Shearer said the enhancement fund brings in $50,000 to $60,000 a month. DON’T MISS

No Rush The design and plan review process could take up to a year and is entirely dependent on plan review turnaround, special regulatory requirements and number of plan revisions, according to Community Operations Officer Neal Shearer. The Opportunity Way Park project, to be funded from the enhancement fund, is expected to cost $1.8 million. The enhancement fund currently holds a balance of $1.6 million. Ron Jerich, Country Club resident and former board member, expressed concern about depleting the enhancement fund on what he called a risky agreement. “We certainly need enhancements on that side of town. I’m all for it. I don’t feel the means to get there justify the end. I think the risk is too great on our part.”

nthem Community Council is considering a developer’s proposal to build a 6,583-square-foot freestanding emergency room in Anthem. The proposed site at the northwest corner of Dedication Trail and Daisy Mountain Drive in the Anthem Crossroads Shopping Center is approved for that type of use. The proposed Arizona General Hospital ER would be a 24-hour outpatient facility staffed with a board certified emergency physician, an emergency-trained registered nurse and a radiology technician, said Andrew Jordan, spokesperson for Adeptus Health.
“They’re constructing a hospital [Arizona General Hospital] down in Laveen and they’re required to have a certain number of emergency rooms to feed that hospital and they have identified [the Anthem location] as one of their sites,” Kollings said. ome New River residents are up in arms over plans for the development of a gas station at the New River Road exit of I-17.
Roughly 80 residents packed the Daisy Mountain Fire Station during the New River/ Desert Hills Community Association meeting May 20 to hear plans for development of the site. While some opponents of the Shell station, to be built on a 4.3-acre parcel on the northeast corner of the exit, expressed concern about an increase in traffic and crime, most complained they were not given an opportunity to provide input in the decision-making process.

But the property was rezoned from rural -43 to C-2 general commercial use (permitting gas stations, diesel for trucks, convenience stores and restaurants) in 1995, according to Maricopa County Planning & Development Deputy Director Darren Gérard. In fact, in 1996 there was an approved plan of development (POD) for this type of use, but the project was never executed. A POD for this new Shell station was approved by the County Board at its April 28 meeting. “Although this plan of development may have been routed for courtesy review to groups such as the New River/Desert Hills Community Association, this was not an item that required public input, public review, public notice or public hearing for approval… The property is entitled for the proposed use,” Gérard said. But opponents aren’t satisfied. “Things change and I think the community should have a viable voice,” said one resident. “I don’t want developers to hide behind this verbiage to approve… That doesn’t mean it can’t be revisited now.” Procedurally, though, Gérard said stopping the project is all but impossible. “... There is nothing short of purchasing the property that any party could have done to stop a development complying with all technical requirements.”

Increased Crime A repeated concern by residents at the meeting was that the filling station would serve as a truck stop—potentially bringing an increase in crime and a host of other problems to the area. But County Supervisor Andy Kunasek said the developer has no intention of developing it as a truck stop— the site would not be outfitted with showers, lockers or truck maintenance bays. He said the developer agreed to discourage overnight parking by installing signs.

Traffic Congestion Regarding traffic concerns, the POD requires the developer to widen New River Road with a left turn lane to access the station, if needed. The road currently runs one lane in each direction with a narrow shoulder. The I-17/New River Road interchange with its single-lane on/off ramps was another hot button. “My biggest concern is what is ADOT going to do to make that a better situation and what’s it going to cost us as a taxpayer?” asked one resident. Another interrupted, “Right now you’ve got single lanes coming off and single lanes going on… and you’ve got 80,000-pound tankers with fuel going down that road.” Joe Airdo expressed similar concerns. Airdo operated Jackass Acres, a gas station and convenience store on the site adjacent to the proposed development, until 2001. “I was there for 20 years and I saw many accidents on that corner. It is not a good spot coming on and off that freeway. You cannot see anything when you’re making the turn onto the road coming off that freeway… I saw 18-wheelers jackknifed there,” Airdo said. The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) plans to widen I-17 between Anthem Way and New River Road remain unfunded, according to ADOT spokesperson Doug Nintzel. MAG, the metro Phoenix freeway planning agency, has the widening project scheduled after 2025… if funding is available, Nintzel said. The stretch continues to be a choke point where many accidents occur as the lanes narrow to two. [See “Crashes at Anthem Way Overpass,” In&Out, Nov. 15, 2012.] Gérard told In&Out, “Certainly the traffic expected at this facility will not warrant any freeway or ramp widening.” And, an ADOT representative at the meeting said a traffic analysis provided by the developer shows the anticipated level of traffic will not impact the I-17 exit/entrance configuration. Though Airdo predicts 18-wheelers trying to get up to speed— the limit is 75 mph here—while merging onto the 2-lane interstate will surely lead to trouble. “He’s got a long uphill… There’s going to be some accidents; There’s going to be a lot of horn-blowing,” Airdo said. After much urging, Kunasek agreed to host future public meetings with the developer to ease concerns. io

here might be no better summer adventure than a highcountry road trip that includes both the great American cheeseburger and fries, and a real, ice cream strawberry milkshake. And, no place in Arizona offers these three summer legends better than Delgadillo’s Snow Cap Drive-In in Seligman. Road trip! And a great American road trip, at that! It was just after World War II when average Americans discovered the joy of driving their very own family cars to new destinations. No highway carried more automobiles into the West than the Route 66 which passed right through the center of Seligman.
In 1953, Juan Delgadillo decided to take advantage of all the highway traffic driving through his little town. He built the Snow Cap Drive-In from scrap lumber salvaged from the Santa Fe Railroad yard. eed expert advice on teen dating? Don’t ask me. And, I will not discuss any aspect of my two daughter’s personal lives for fear of harsh retribution with extreme prejudice and a rotten cherry on top. If you want my less-than-expert advice, here goes: If you have teen daughters, keep them locked up or send them to convent school. If you have teen boys, keep them off my street. That should probably do it. From personal experience, when I was a teen, girls sure said “no” a lot. What I mean by that is this: Me: “Want to go out sometime?” Her: “No.” I didn’t have much game back then (and, frankly, still don’t). I think my lack of a decent rap probably saved me from more than one father who thinks like I do now. Those who did go out with me usually did so to get even with
previous (or sometimes current) boyfriends. I don’t recommend this to any budding daters. It got me beat up more than once, mostly by the previous/current boyfriend. Truth be told, I first asked my wife out while she was involved with another guy, though he didn’t beat me up. Maybe he didn’t think he could take me. If you’re a dad of a daughter, I’d suggest requiring any potential suitor to meet you before the first date. I know lots of fathers talk about cleaning a shotgun at the first visit, but I have a much more subtle, and I think potent, approach. I find that saying very little and staring very hard (without blinking) is quite effective. I sometimes add a menacing neck twitch for effect. Then, I do a long slow drive-by at wherever the date destination might be and repeat the stare and neck twitch. If the kid shows up for a second date, he’s probably OK… or he knows he can beat me up. io THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 2014 |
