Look for the usual water slides, bounce houses and kiddie rides. Buy a $12, all-you-can-ride bracelet at the community center until 5 p.m., July 2 to avoid lines at the event. The Rotary Club will be pulling beer taps and mixing margaritas. And, the food court will serve up fry bread, kettle corn, hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream.

When flying VFR, pilots are responsible for keeping their aircraft safely separated from other aircraft,” said Gregor.

After studying the National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report of the mid-air collision, O’Connor said it appeared the two planes turned into each other. While it was a tragedy for the pilots and their families, he said, “Everything they were doing was safe. They’re [certified flight instructors, student pilots] not kids up there goofing off,” O’Connor said. As for the proximity of the accident to homes in the area, “The accident happened where it should have happened, if it [had to] happen... out in the open desert,” O’Connor said. “Airplanes flying over our neighborhood is not unsafe.
