Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

HOW TO ANGER YOUR AGENT

Dear Doreen, My agent is so mad at me! All I did was chat with some buyers and their agent as they toured my house. I was just trying to be nice. I told them how motivated I was to sell so I could move closer to my daughter and new baby granddaughter! I seemed to encourage them toward making an offer. Why is she so angry? New Grandma Dear Grandma, Let me count the ways! Your agent knows—in fact, is obliged—not to reveal to the buyers or their agent any information that could be used to your disadvantage. Loyalty is the most Send your real estate fundamental duty an questions to Doreen.Drew agent owes to a client. @ColdwellBanker.com That duty obliges the agent to act solely in the best interests of the client, excluding all other interests, including his/her own. You definitely weakened your position to get top dollar by revealing you will accept almost any offer to get closer to your grandbaby. It seemed like casual conversation, but it will be used to your disadvantage. The buyer’s agent who was chatting with you was acting in the best interest of her client. Advice: If any agent asks you for anything other than an appointment to see your home, tell them they MUST speak to your agent! Wishing you a quick sale! Doreen

Depression? Dementia? Or Just Age A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Q: A:

“My dad has always been my rock; The person I turn to when life gets large and I need help. But recently he’s been so withdrawn… distracted. I can’t tell if it’s depression or maybe signs of dementia?” When it’s your parent, it’s hard to put your finger on what’s happening. Watching your dad age isn’t easy. This is a frustrating time, and while the changes can be alarming, it’s also easy to dismiss the concerns you have deep in your gut.

Red flags for depression include: • Fatigue • Sadness • Loss of interest in hobbies • Social withdrawal and isolation • Weight loss/loss of appetite • Sleep issues • Loss of self-worth (worries about being a burden) • Increased use of alcohol or other drugs

Be pro-active (not reactive) in getting mom/dad help. While you might want to avoid medication, in some cases a small adjustment in meds can make a big difference. One of the biggest indications of someone needing help is when they mix up their meds, forget to take them or can’t remember if they took them. This type of behavior requires action, despite what dad says. Follow your gut and get help. Ignoring it is only going to compound the problems.

Fellowship Gone but Not Forgotten

Y

our article about Fellowship Church leaving [“Fellowship Out. CCV In.,” In&Out, Feb. 27] left me so cold I felt compelled to write. It is unfortunate that the tone was not “Farewell Fellowship and thank you for serving the community.” No mention was made of all the ways Fellowship has positively impacted, not only Anthem, but Phoenix, Yarnell and Sonora, Mexico to name just a few places. No “thank you” for the Eggstravaganza in the Park for which Fellowship members bought candy, filled countess plastic eggs and [supervised] year after year. No “thank

you” for the volunteers from Fellowship who helped make the July celebration a success. The list of how Fellowship has cared for the community while being part of the community goes on and on. We appreciate that CCV is creating an opportunity to connect and has been very welcoming. I can only hope the new congregation will receive more favorable press from In&Out than Fellowship has.

BCHS Engineering/Media Labs Draw Raves By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com

B

oulder Creek High School opened a $1.75-million addition in January, providing students with 5,000 square feet for career and technical training. The project, largely funded by West-Mec, a Career and Technical Education partner with DVUSD, gives students a new engineering lab, new broadcasting station and media lab. “CTE is the answer to what we’re lacking,” said DVUSD board member Ann Ordway. The engineering lab allows students more space to explore and build robots. An outdoor robotics pad allows students to test their creations. This is where BCHS senior Alex Tomaso tests his Mars Rover-like robot. The robotics project was a favorite of Tomaso’s; It was assigned by teacher Aaron Parsons as a way for students to aggregate years of training to build something significant.

“They get to utilize their four years to design something they can market and sell or better the world,” said Parsons. Parsons’ classes are in high demand. He attributes the popularity to the way engineering can make a core curriculum come to life. “The kids love this. It’s hands on. They ask, ‘where am I going to use algebra?’ I make it useful to them,” he said. Tomaso gets it. “It’s real life engineering,” he said. Upstairs, a new broadcasting station and control room, separate from the media classroom, allows students to film without ambient noise from classmates disrupting the audio. “I wish I were a freshman again so I could enjoy this space more,” said senior media student Paige Fuchs. Media teacher Stephen Watson enjoys giving about 160 students a day the creative freedom to “go make something cool.” West-MEC offers Career and Technical Education programs and satellite programs to students in much of central and western Maricopa County. io THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2014 |

Renovated Trail Improves Camelback Experience By Linda & Dr. Dick Buscher ldbuscher@anthemnews.com

C

amelback Mountain might just be the premier natural landmark in the Valley. And now that the newly renovated Echo Canyon Trailhead has reopened—along with a parking lot double the size— access is much easier for those ready for the challenge to reach the top of that famous ol’ camel’s hump. A sacred Hohokam grotto on the north face near the summit of the Echo Canyon Trail gave rise to a second

name for this venerable site― Sacred Mountain. Camelback Mountain is actually made up of two separate and distinct rock formations. The head of the camel, found within the Echo Canyon Recreational Area, is composed of layered red sandstone. The famous rock formation known as the Praying Monk is also found here. The hump of the camel is granite and is much older in geological time than the sandstone head. Two trails connect at the summit of Camelback. The 1.5-mile Cholla Trail leads to the top

from the eastern end of the mountain. It is the easiest of the two trails. The 1.2-mile Echo Canyon Trail at the northwest end of the mountain is shorter but more challenging. Potentially hazardous points on both trails render them not recommended for novice hikers. Plan on 3–4 hours for a roundtrip hike on either trail. If you are in shape, climb to the summit; if not, take a picnic lunch and enjoy some people-watching at the new ramada in the shadow of the sacred mountain. io

The $4-million Echo Canyon Trailhead Project

• Increased parking spaces from 68 to 135

• Added 15 new bike racks • Added permanent restrooms with flush toilets, a chilled drinking fountain and shade ramada • Rebuilt and rerouted first quarter-mile of the summit trail to improve footing and eliminate erosion-prone areas • Added walkways in parking area • Added roundabout at park entrance to control vehicle speeds • Improved traffic flow through separate entrances for the trailhead and neighboring residential area THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2014 |

Make Your House Stand Out By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

“M

y house is easy to spot, it’s the one with tan stucco and a tile roof.” If your home is suffering from an identity crisis, here are a few CC&R-friendly tips that will help pull your house out of the witness protection program. Say it with (approved) flowers! The approved plant list for Parkside is nine pages long (10 if you include the “backyard only” page). There’s a lot of color and variety in there. While the uninspired landscaper may push the cheap, safe, and hearty lantana, you might want to drop a few showy blue gilias into the palette. Hardscape that’s easy. I was quite unfamiliar with the term “mounding” when I moved here from the East Coast. This is the art of piling a bunch of dirt into a “mound” and covering it with rock. While this is better than a flat area of rock, I guess, a nice stacked stone wall can break up the flatness with a little more structure and flair. Paint the town teal. There are well over 60 paint schemes allowed in Parkside (one that sports the color “unreal teal”) and I’m not sure how many in Country

Club. Bottom line: there’s a lot you can do. While many of the color schemes consist of dark brown, medium brown, and light brown, you can, like me, get a little crazy. I painted my coach lights red. (Oh, the horror.) Parkside property owners can view paint color schemes at anthemnews.com/parkside-paint. Country Club homeowners can get paint colors schemes at anthemnews.com/accca-paint or in the ACCCA Designer’s Notebook under landscaping compliance documents. Visit your HOA at the civic building to see samples of the paint. Pave your way to individuality. I also went ahead and pulled up my concrete driveway and installed pavers. It’s not cheap, but it’s pretty neat, and it is allowed, with prior HOA approval. If you do this, have the contractor run a nice big PVC sleeve underneath so you can run any future landscape lines from one side of your driveway to the other with ease. Stand up, stand out, be proud. (Just don’t paint outside the lines of compliance.) io
