Right Decision? A D V E R T I S E M E N T
Sometimes you don’t know until after it’s made.
I
n September 2013, 83-year-old Lloydean was living on her own in Anthem. Her daughter and son lived nearby and would check on her often, but as time passed, they worried about her not being able to handle everyday activities alone. When they offered to take on some of those chores, Lloydean would chase them out, insisting she was fine and didn’t need help. Truth is, laundry hadn’t been done in months, Lloydean was forgetting how to use the microwave to heat up food, and her health was declining.
W
Gayla and LLoydean
UPDATE ON LLOYDEAN They struggled with the difficult decision to move Lloydean from her home to Anthem Senior Retreat. Recently, Lloydean’s daughter sent this note to Sam & Cheryl:
e can’t thank you enough for all the special things you do for Mom! Being that she’s so close to me in Anthem, I am able to visit her every day. From the liquid vitamins you give her to all the special pampering (nails, massage and hair), mom looks so happy and healthy… cozy and well-cared for! Every time I visit before dinner, the meals look and smell so delicious! Thank you for all you do for my mom. We are so blessed to have her with you at ASR.” Love, Gayla and John Perish
Independent Living? Assisted Living? Living with Me (or my brother/sister)? Ask the experts! Cheryl Ables began working
in the senior care field 10 years ago, after taking care of her parents and grandparent while raising her children. Sam Ile and his family have been in the business of assisted living homes for more than 20 years. Sam and Cheryl are approaching ten years as owners of Anthem Senior Living. They also operate Eldermom, a senior placement service and, now, Anthem Senior Retreat Assisted Living home. Sam and Cheryl are experts at the unique challenges posed by aging parents. Have a question? Write or call today! 602-909-9550,

NEWS » COMMUNITY Looking north, the proposed cell tower disguised as a water tower will stand near a monopole at the Daisy Mountain Fire Department.
Cell Tower Proposed for Anthem Property By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com
A
T&T held a community meeting for residents about a possible 65-foot cell tower affecting Anthem and Desert Hills residents March 5. A handful of residents were in attendance to express concern and ask questions. The proposed tower, to be constructed at the Anthem Equestrian Trailhead at the far southeast corner of Anthem, will be camouflaged as a water tank. Declan Murphy, a representative from Coal Creek Consulting, said the purpose of the tower is to provide better coverage for AT&T customers in the area. “When a carrier like AT&T has a gap, or deficiency in service, they get calls from customers, they can monitor dropped calls and all that kind of information, which is what drives the process,” Murphy said. According to Murphy, Verizon owns the nearby monopole on Daisy Mountain Fire Department’s property and it cannot structurally hold another carrier. The AT&T tower could be
shared with a second carrier, lessening the need for another cell tower in the area. One Desert Hills resident said he came representing his 20 or so neighbors regarding concerns about a decrease in property values. The tower, he said, disrupts their sunset views. “It’s just the worst idea for our whole neighborhood. The whole reason we live up there is so we don’t have to see stuff like this,” he said. Another resident expressed concern about the disruption to the trailhead during construction. “There’s no other place to bring your horses except in that area. What other arrangements are going to be made? People bring their horses and their trailers… No horse is going to go in there without acting up.” The tower still needs to be approved by ACC’s design committee and then go through Maricopa County’s approval process. According to Coal Creek Consulting, construction wouldn’t begin until the end of the year. The ACC plans to discuss the AT&T lease terms at its Wednesday, March 26 board meeting when it could possibly be put to a vote. io THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 2014 |

Teen Tragedy Moves Community to Act By Karen Goveia kgoveia@anthemnews.com
A
nthem and New River communities are pulling together to support the family of 16-year-old Anastasia “Ana” Greer, a Sandra Day O’Connor High School student who became the victim of a murder-suicide March 7. Students at Anthem Preparatory Academy hosted a candlelight vigil at Anthem Prep last weekend, where Ana’s mother teaches high school math. Students have created a Facebook page, Rest in Peace Ana Greer, for friends to share memories and find comfort. 14

The non-profit organization Hands Across Anthem is working with Ana’s family to help raise funds to cover funeral expenses. “In times of need, our community rallies, and this time is no different,” said organizer Jerri Cottrell. “Ana’s tragic death is heart breaking and parents and students have made it known they wish to help support her family in any way they can. Right now, help in the way of taxdeductible donations would be the very best way.” Ana, a former Anthem School student, lived in New River with her mother, Diannah Dinsmoor. Ana’s 19-year-old brother has been granted
leave from the military to be with his family. Anthem Prep students have been signing cards, leaving notes and flowers for their teacher on a memorial table in the school’s front lobby. A makeshift memorial at the site of the shooting continues to grow. Ana and her classmate, 15-yearold Matthew Bolton, were found dead from gunshot wounds outside the home of a friend on West Villa Linda. Police said Matthew stole the gun, legally registered to his brother, by breaking a window to gain access to the room where it was locked. Ana was at the friend’s house when Matthew showed up at the home. The two were asked to take their discussion outside. After shooting Ana several times, Matthew turned the gun on himself.

Greasy Driveway Solutions Only one involves your mother-in-law By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
A
frantic reader asked how to remove oils stains from concrete. It seems that a visitor parked their car on her driveway, and when they pulled away, a nasty puddle of crude remained. Wow, a gift that keeps on giving! She wondered if there was any way to clean up the oil. The writer wished to remain anonymous, so I’m guessing the culprit was her mother-in-law. While there are several different products on the market that claim to do a great job, save your money. Cleaning up a fresh oil stain can be done with soap and a scrub brush—but you need to act quickly! The older the stain, the less chance you’ll have of removing it completely. Hose off the area and squirt a liberal amount of dish soap (Dawn is a good choice) onto the stain. Now start scrubbing. Use this same method on older stains, but it may take multiple tries, and the results will vary, depending on the age of the stain and the density of the concrete. Oil stains
are tougher to remove from a driveway than a garage floor. Garage concrete tends to be finished in a way that makes the surface smoother and more resistant to staining. Here are some don’ts: • Don’t use a wire brush or high-power pressure washer, unless you want to etch the concrete. • Don’t use harsh chemicals such as Muriatic acid, except as a last resort. Chemical burns can result, as well as damage to the concrete finish. While other “experts” recommend kerosene or gasoline as an option, the results aren’t worth the risk. If the soap and scrubbing doesn’t do the trick, you can try Trisodium Phosphate (TSP). It’s available at most hardware stores. Follow the instructions carefully, and use caution. While not as dangerous as Muriatic acid, it’s still a harsh chemical. Oh, and one last tip: Next time, tell your mother-in-law to park on the street. That’ll keep the stains off of your driveway, and with any luck, it might just shorten her visit! io
