ASK DOREEN

BOOM OR BUST?

A Dip in Sales Predicted to Reverse Dear Doreen, I keep hearing the market is booming but now that I’ve listed my home for sale, I see no boom! ( Just my luck, eh?) Will I be able to sell before the dreaded summer season? Unlucky in Listing Dear Unlucky, Don’t give up yet! Home prices are continuing to recover, generally speaking, but stricter lending laws and nasty winter weather in much of the country have tamped sales. In fact, applications for home loans (purchases, not refis) dropped 3.5% a few weeks ago to the lowest level since August of 1995, according to the February report from the Mortgage Bankers Association. And, January resales fell to the lowest level in more than a year. The good news is many experts predict this will reverse in the coming weeks as we move into the warmer weather of spring selling season. BUSINESS IS BOOMING! … or at least moving By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com

J

ust as the Dollar Store & More calls it quits, Dollar Tree, Inc. has set its sights on Anthem and expects to open in the Tutor Time Plaza. “The projected date is July 5,” according to Dollar Tree Stores Manager Rick Clem. Clem said the store will take Rosati’s space. Rosati’s is moving to the end unit with a larger patio.

“Things are going so well, we need to expand. We need to have more space. We need more visibility,” said Brian Benson, coowner of Rhapsody. When KidCo moved its consignment shop south a couple blocks last November, Tennessee Grill owner Bob Adler jumped at the chance to snag the space and construction has already begun on the addition of a sports bar. “We’ve done well. Each month has been a little bit better than the last,” Adler said. “The residents in the area have been very supportive and we can’t be more thankful for that.” Nearby, Swanky’s Fashion Boutique is not moving, but the store has four new owners.

Rosati’s will close its doors Sunday, March 30 and will reopen in summer just east of its current location. “The new spot will be awesome,” said Rosati’s co-owner Thomas Hill. “We’ll have a bigger bar, larger dining area, bigger patio.” Another player in the commercial space swap, Rhapsody School of Music plans to move its operation from the Shops at Anthem plaza to a larger suite in the Tutor Time plaza next to Fendi Nails late March to early April.

“The biggest thing is we’re adding a higher-end brand, but we’re not getting rid of anything,” said Christie Acevedo, one of the new owners. Swanky’s plans a grand re-opening celebration Saturday, April 26. In the same complex, Swiftech Liquidators has taken over J&B Consignment’s Rhapsody School of Music moves to bigger digs in March.

Michael Kors is bringing his distinctive designs to the Outlets in May. old space. Lee Bernier, co-owner, said the larger space allowed them to add merchandise they didn’t previously offer. “The move was triggered by a need for more space and more visibility. It’s a location that’s easier for people to find us,” said co-owner Aaron Bernier. “It’s triple the retail-area size.” J & B Furniture Consignment remains in the same complex, but changed suite numbers and added about 600 square feet. The store’s inventory changes daily, according to owner Barbara Willis, who is thrilled with her new location. “We are an upscale consignment store. We have a good following now. It’s a good location and it’s right on the street. We’ve been here for eight weeks… I’ve gotten good feedback,” she said. Several of the stores in the complex will be having a reopening sale on Saturday, April 26. Across the street at the Outlets, Michael Kors plans to bring his “stylish elegance and sporty attitude” to a location near the Coach Factory Store in May. “We are very pleased to add another impressive brand name to our roster of retailers,” said Outlets Marketing Director Sallyann Martinez.

NEWS » BUSINESS Next time you run out of Starbucks coffee by the time you cross the parking lot at Anthem Crossroads, don’t worry… Soon you’ll be able to get a refill at the new Starbucks inside Fry’s. This isn’t the first time the grocer has installed a Starbucks within shouting distance of another Starbucks. “We’ve done that at a couple locations,” said Fry’s spokesperson Jo Ellen Lynn. “Customers told us this is what they wanted.” Within days, the conversion from Tully’s will be complete and the coffee shop staff will have doubled. Speaking of coffee, don’t look for joe at Koina Cafe. The coffee shop, part of Crossroads Church, closed and is now operating as the Roadster Cafe—a space available for rent for community events and the like. Safeway and fellow grocery chain Albertsons will be merging this year and the two chains expect to finalize the deal sometime in the last three months of 2014. According to the announcement, no stores are expected to close, and there is no plan to change store names as a result of the merger. io

The Rubber Bracelet That Makes Life Better By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

O

ther than my wedding ring, I wear no jewelry of any kind. No real reason, it’s just not something I do. And I’m definitely not a wristband guy. Truth be told, I thought the whole Livestrong thing was kind of shallow. I’m all about raising money for cancer (in honor of both of my parents and many loved ones who had it), I just found the yellow rubber bracelet thing way too commercial and more of a fashion statement than anything else. “Look at me, I gave five dollars!” Then there got to be more wristbands for so many different causes, I lost count, and interest. I now wear a blue “Tyler Hallsey” wristband for totally selfish reasons. I don’t know Tyler or his family, though I do read his dad’s blog on Facebook. I read about the mountainous hurdles a family must face when their child has been diagnosed with the horrible disease called Pontine Glioma. I try to imagine what it’s like but that’s just not possible. I marvel at their courage and honor their strength and faith. But that’s not why I wear the bracelet.

When I get annoyed in traffic, I can’t help but notice the bright blue band on my wrist and suddenly traffic just isn’t that bad. When I point a finger at one of my children to admonish them for a dish left on the counter or a forgotten

Diffuse Pontine Glioma is a highly aggressive, difficult to treat brain tumor affecting the pons (at the base of the brain), which controls vital body functions such as breathing. SOURCE Dana Farber Cancer Institute

homework assignment, the bright blue band reminds me of much tougher, and more important parental struggles— struggles that I don’t have. When I applaud at my son’s sporting event, it reminds me just how grateful I am he can run and jump with ease, and the score becomes less significant. It’s so cliché to offer advice like “seize the day” or “make sure you hug your loved ones” or “do unto others.” We know we should but sometimes we only realize it when tragedy strikes. My bright blue band reminds me to slow down a little, listen a little more than talk, hold a door for somebody, say “thank you” and mean it. But most importantly it reminds me that I have a lot to learn about courage, fight and true grace. Thanks for the cool wristband, Tyler! io THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 2014 |
