ANTHEM ENVY? The neighbors to the north want an Anthem experience complete with Community Center membership.
Arroyo Norte Still Wants Access ACC Special Meeting
ARROYO ACCESS
(The regular March meeting has been rescheduled.)
ACC Board of Directors Special Meeting Thursday, April 4, 6:30 p.m. Anthem Community Center Topics to be discussed: Arroyo Norte Facilities Use Agreement The agreement would allow Arroyo Norte residents access to the Community Park, Liberty Bell Park and the Anthem Community Center—virtually the same access as Anthem homeowners—for $40 per month per household, about two-thirds of what Anthem residents pay. A
rroyo Norte, the new development just north of Anthem—not to be confused with Arroyo Grande, an Anthem outpost to the northwest—yearns for Anthem access. In fact, early advertisements for the community erroneously touted free access to Anthem’s wonderland of amenities. Back in May 2011, Starwood Land Ventures, the developer of the 300home community, requested access to Anthem to fulfill an
emergency egress requirement during construction. The access would have been gated and had the potential to become permanent. After consideration, though, the Community Council closed the door on the request, citing “not much in the way of advantages to Anthem,” according to then-Council member Ron Jerich. Today, Arroyo Norte has again requested access, but not to Anthem roads. This time, the neighbors to the north want the whole package: Access to the pool, the water park, the gym, the Adventure Playground… In short, Arroyo Norte wants what Anthem owners have: an all-access pass. And this time, Council is finding more in the way of advantages… about $140,000 more. The idea is to charge Norte owners a use-andconsumption fee of about $40 per month per household, less than what Anthem residents pay by about a third.

According to Anthem CEO Jenna Kollings, the difference between the $62.50 Anthem residents pay, and the proposed rate for Arroyo Norte is because Anthem would not handle the administrative aspects of the fee. “We are not asking Arroyo Norte to pay for administrative services that they do not receive and which will not change with the inclusion or exclusion of Arroyo Norte,” Kollings said. “Thus, the $40-calculation is derived specifically from the body of services which will have an impact from potentially increased use.” Annexation is not on the table.

Norte’s HOA, and so would not constitute as a burden to the ACC. “It addresses the inevitable use of Anthem Community Council’s… facilities,” said Kollings, “particularly Community Park and Liberty Bell Park which are going to be used by those residents whether or not we have this agreement.” The ability to buy a new home closer to Anthem’s main amenities than many homes within Anthem, and pay less for access to those amenities than Anthem homeowners, would likely lure buyers away from Anthem; a community largely valued on its amenities. At the meeting, it was noted that many Arroyo Norte homeowners were previously Anthem residents. io

“I would support it. It would generate more revenue and not impact the parks because they are not that crowded anyway.”
“I think it’s a good move. When I go to the Community Center it never seems too crowded. As far as the parks go, people not from Anthem use them anyway, so if they [Arroyo Norte] want to pay the fee that is fine.”

Anthem School Forecast:

“T
he kids just love it, especially when a storm is passing and all the weather data is rapidly changing,” said Cindy Miller, eighth grade science teacher at Anthem School. She was describing the Weather Bug School Program in which Anthem School participates.
has been measuring local conditions since 2006. The various instruments towering above the eighth grade classrooms provide instant readings. And, what is really neat, is that this weather information, specific to Anthem, is not only available and useful to Ms. Miller and her students, but to everyone through weatherbug. com (or anthemnews.com).
The people of WeatherNet.com and KTVK designed this schoolThe weather station, funded based weather program to assist science teachers in teaching STEM by a grant from WeatherNet.com (science, technology, engineering and KTVK Channel 3 Phoenix, and mathematics) while providing local /anthem-101/climate/weather communities the most Check Anthem’s weather anytime. advanced warning system THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2013 |

Weather Bug provides access to weather data from the Anthem School weather station on weatherbug.com. for lightning and severe weather while becoming a resource for live weather and HD images and videos. Area residents and part-timers were able to watch last summer’s severe storm roll across Anthem from the live camera feed while getting immediate measures of wind speed, rainfall and barometric pressure. Miller, Principal Deb Roets and others at Anthem School monitor the weather station daily, and report any problems with the nine weather instruments and/or video camera. It is a perfect example of how a local classroom can become an extension of information and knowledge for every home and business in the community—a partnership that enhances our students’ education and the community at large. “The technology is extremely valuable for the kids to see and interact with on a daily basis,” said Cindy Miller. “It also makes them feel special to have this amazing technology in our classroom.” And, it is just another reason why Anthem is such a unique and wonderful community in which to live. io 20 |
