All of Anthem’s Goodness at Lesser Cost f our new neighbors from Arroyo Norte Ishould want access to Anthem’s amenities they be willing to pay the market price
for that access. It seems that our CFO Doug Greenstein has confused cost with price. As I understand it, he calculated the cost of providing the amenities at $40 per month and decided that this cost is a fair market price. Where in the real world is any product or service sold at cost? Allowing this access at the $40-rate will ultimately increase the value of Arroyo Norte and decrease the value of Anthem. Residents of Arroyo Norte will have all
of the good of Anthem (at a cost less than the residents of Anthem) and none of the bureaucratic hassles. Yes, the residents of Arroyo Norte will have access to the parks of Anthem, but we don’t have to allow them into already over-taxed facilities. It is time our Community Council’s hired help started looking out for the interests of Anthem property owners instead of what might be good for its budget. If this crazy deal is approved and you were considering buying property in Arroyo Norte or Anthem where would you buy? Douglas Spurlock Arroyo Grande, Anthem

or dad’s car keys. The proportion of licensed drivers 70 and older has soared in recent years. In 2010, there were approximately 22.3 million licensed drivers 70 and older, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. And, older people now keep their driver’s license longer. While some can drive safely throughout life, others’ abilities wane for various reasons. Letting go of the keys is never easy, and many seniors are reluctant—or in denial. But if warning signs indicate the time has come, you or someone else may have to have a conversation with the senior driver. The change can cause feelings of anger, isolation, helplessness and depression—so the discussion is not an easy one. “I was the bad guy,” said Kerrie TEN TIPS TO KNOW WHEN IT’S TIME AT anthemnews.com/stop-driving
Droban, of Anthem, who, along with her husband, had to tell her father-in-law it was time to hand over the keys. “I don’t think it would have happened so quickly if I hadn’t really put my foot down,” Droban said, acknowledging how difficult it was for her husband. She knew it was time when her father-in-law, 86, had gotten lost for hours trying make the straight shot from his Anthem home to hers. “There’s a natural instinct to say, ‘Oh it’s just this one time,’” Droban said. But then it happened again. And once, ending up in Glendale instead of at home. Then there was the time her 12-year-old son had to grab the steering wheel when grandpa attempted a dangerous turn across two lanes of traffic. “Although it’s tempting to put off this conversation, it will behoove you to take control of this situation before someone gets hurt,” said Cheryl Ables, owner of Anthem Senior Living and the force behind eldermom.com. “It truly can be a life or death situation if the keys are left in their possession for too long.”

That’s how Droban and her husband ultimately presented it. “The way we put it to him was that he could hurt somebody. He knew he didn’t want to hurt someone,” she said.
Right person. Right time.
“The biggest mistake grown children make is keeping the role as a child, when parents need you most to make the decisions of an adult,” Ables said. “When your mom or dad isn’t safe anymore, they need you to take control and make the decisions necessary that are in [the parent’s] best interest.” But, studies show older drivers often take the news poorly from family (See KEYS on Page 17)

The good news is most of us, if we lay off the pork rinds and moon pies, will live years longer than those who came before us. The trick will be to stay vertical as long as possible. Most of us have parents and/or grandparents still zipping around somewhere―listen here you whippersnappers, these tips are for you, too.

Library-goers get tips during a Windows 8 class—one of several classes made possible through a grant now coming to an end.
Library Employment Coach Loses Job By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com
P
eople have been heading to the library to learn how to write a digital-era resume, research potential employers and update necessary computer skills—for free. The Job Help Hub has assisted some 35 to 75 North Valley Regional Library patrons each month in their job-search efforts. But that program ends in June and instructor assistance ends mid-May. The Arizona Job Assistance Center (AzJAC) Project—a partnership between the Arizona Governor’s Office of Economic Recovery and the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records—addressed the needs of jobseeking library-goers. A $1.6 million federal grant, plus some funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provided select libraries with computer workstations and a part-time instructor. “The programs [at North Valley Regional Library] have been really successful,” said Branch Manager Pamela Blair-Sheldon. The scope of instruction ranges from resume writing, to job searching and
the application process, to continuing education opportunities, and even business startups. But the programs appear to be doomed. “This was a one-time grant given out by the federal government and I don’t believe there’s any chance of it being extended,” Blair-Sheldon said. When the grant ends, the library keeps the equipment, but loses instructor funding. That’s the tough part. Blair-Sheldon said Maureen Herron is the instructor paid from the grant funds, and in collaboration with library staff, “came on board and expanded the program from just job help. She’s come up with a list of ways to really connect with the community.” Herron implemented the “Walk-up Computer Assistance” program, “Resume and Reinventing Yourself” and “Job Searching: A Match. com for Job Seekers.” “Maureen devotes 12 hours a week to these programs,” Blair-Sheldon said. With the library’s salary freeze in its sixth year, a new hire is unlikely. She said the adult services librarian will be managing the transition and providing some of the same type of classes. io THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 2013 |
