ASK DOREEN
Don’t Miss Your Flight! Dear Doreen, What’s up with the anthem market? I want to buy a home here and am not getting anywhere. They are literally “going like hotcakes.” I think my agent and I are all over it (working with your office, by the way), but homes are gone as soon as they come on the market. a few months ago, I had my choice. What is going on? Please don’t tell me I was at the train station when the plane left Sky Harbor? —Still Waiting for the Right House Dear Waiting, That’s one of my favorite sayings as of late! Yes! You were at the train station when that plane left. Sorry. anthem has seen a drastic decrease in the number of homes for sale, leaving buyers with fewer options
and more bidding on the same house. Why? Sellers are unwilling to take less for their homes than they originally paid, so inventory is shrinking. They are holding out, hoping for higher prices. and, investors have been snatching up homes in bulk. So, you’ll have to stop being too picky about what you will accept and look past the obvious. Paint and carpet are easy to replace. Can you opt for an additional bedroom for storage and forego the 3-car garage? live near the Community Center and pass on the private pool? Homes in anthem are still a great value. our community is sought after and will continue to be for years. Buy now, before prices really go up! —Doreen

Jonathan was told he’d never walk again. Today, there’s only one handicap he’s worried about. You wouldn’t know it by looking at him, but just over a year ago Jonathan was told he would never walk again after suffering serious injuries in a car accident. But thanks to John C. Lincoln Hospitals and their advanced technology and surgical expertise for patients with brain and spinal injuries, he’s back on course. And back in the swing of things. Tor Tjorhom, a fifth grader at the Caepe School, is concentrating on his studies of terminal velocity.
Sometimes You Just Have to Do it to Get it
S
ome students at The Caepe School recently had a science lesson they will never, ever forget. It happened when Leah Parker, director of the gifted and talented program, decided the best way to get his students to wrap their brain around the concept of terminal velocity was to take them sky diving. “We just wrapped up a study of forces—such as acceleration, area fronting the wind, wind resistance and
terminal velocity—that act on airplanes and parachutes,” Parker said. Given the obvious hurdles to shoving the students out of planes, he did the next best thing… He took them to SkyVenture Arizona indoor skydiving facility in Eloy, Ariz. There, students were able to lie on a bed of air traveling approximately 120 miles per hour. “At first it was scary, but once I got the hang of it, it was exciting!” said fifth grader Sophie Lee. io DOUBLE ISSUE MAY 24 & MAY 31, 2012 |

rainforest, a savannah grassland and a fog desert. An agricultural area provided food for the crew, who resided in special living quarters.
It’s one of the most ambitious scientific laboratories ever built by man, and it’s just four miles southwest of Oracle, Ariz. The Biosphere 2 was built in the mid-1980s as a totally sealed living laboratory to conduct research and to develop self-sustaining space-colonization technologies. The largest closed system ever built, the Biosphere 2 is a structure model after Earth, the first biosphere.
The first crew of four women and four men were sealed into Biosphere 2 in 1991. Their mission was to survive and perform scientific research with only the food they could grow and harvest. One member of the crew was a medical doctor and the rest were research scientists with different areas of specialization.
Biosphere 2’s 3.1 acres contain five areas based on biomes commonly found on Earth: An ocean with coral reef, a mangrove wetland, a tropical
They lived within this self-sufficient ecosystem for two years. During the first year, they reported great hunger and lost 16 percent of their previous body weight. (Continued on page 35) DOUBLE ISSUE MAY 24 & MAY 31, 2012 |

(Continued from page 33) A typical day for each of the eight crew members consisted of a 2.5- hour session of growing and harvesting food in the agriculture area, a 2.5-hour session in the “basement” keeping all the pumps, fans and electrical components running well, and the remainder of the day working with their individual research projects. Since more than 80 percent of the Biosphere 2’s windows filtered out UV light, the Biospherians spent two years without the harmful rays aging their skin. The sunlight heated the air in this sealed environment, so two 20-ton rubber and steel “lungs” expanded and contracted—up to 40-feet in height— to compensate for the changing air volume, preventing the glass windows from blowing out. This first crew ran into some unexpected problems. Most serious was the loss of oxygen and the rise of carbon dioxide levels. Sixteen months into the mission, the oxygen level within the laboratory dropped from 20.9 percent to 14.5 percent. Researchers decided to add oxygen in January and again in August 1993, spurring some critics to contend that the Biosphere 2 experiment had failed. But others viewed it as a crucial lesson learned about sealed ecosystems. The oxygen leaked from Biosphere 2 at a rate of 10 percent a year. The space shuttle leaked oxygen at a rate of 2 percent a day. Scientists affirmed that Biosphere 2 is the bestsealed structure ever built by man. The first mission ended Sept. 26, 1993. A second mission began the following March with seven crew members—but ended prematurely six months later under irreconcilable management conflicts.

ANTHEM BUILDING PURCHASE
Additional Meeting Added Seeking Community Input T
he Anthem Community Council is well on its way to purchasing the building in which it currently conducts business. The Council has made an offer of $2.3 million to purchase the building and plans to take between $2 million and $2.7 million from the enhancement fund for down-payment and remodeling of the structure.
Council plans to take a loan to finance the remainder of the purchase, encumbering the community with the largest new debt since Pulte turned over control to residents. However, CFO Doug Greenstein said at a community meeting, “There is no indebtedness for the future residents other than paying for the building.”
Residents are encouraged to voice their opinions of the purchase project by attending one of the meetings, or by emailing planning@anthemcouncil.com.

“We try to do the same thing. We go north to Flag or a cabin nearby just to get out of the hot weather. We like it because it’s familiar and cheap.”
“Generally we try to mix it up. It depends on money. We are from North Carolina before we moved here and typically we went to the beach or the mountains. The variety we enjoyed.”
“Every year we seem to go to Disney and the beach. Since we had kids, it has changed a little. It’s a little more restrictive, but we still do California because of Disney. We haven’t been able to do Vegas or anywhere like that.”
“We have a good routine. We spend time with my wife’s family in California and time with my family in Utah. We go to Morro Bay while in California and my brother has a boat in Utah. That is standard every year.”

FAST FACT
ROAD TRIP!
About 707,000 Arizonans will travel 50 miles or more over Memorial Day weekend. Nearly nine in 10 plan to drive to their Memorial Day destination. They’re smart. Driving is cheaper than flying. With lower gas prices, a family of four can drive from the Phoenix area to San Diego or Las Vegas, or even New York, even in an SUV, cheaper than they can fly. And that’s a deal you can bank on all summer. But are they safe? Eighty-three percent of Americans think winter is the most dangerous driving season. Not so. A third of all traffic fatalities occur in summer. Drinking and crowded rural roads are the biggest factors (57 percent of all traffic fatalities occur on rural roads). SOURCE: AAA; LiveScience.com
ANOTHER POSITIVE INDICATOR
While road trips are up, so are the number of passengers through Sky Harbor Airport. February’s total (3,146,023) was up 5.6 percent over last February. SOURCE: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
