Dog-friendly hotels — not so much. I knew it was only a matter of time before our aging air conditioning units called it quits. With rather large dogs, I also knew a hotel was not an option if our units died in the middle of the peak season. My wife and I decided to look into replacement before the inevitable occurred. We had five quotes from both local and larger valley contractors. Travis with ProSkill impressed us with his promptness, knowledge, and thoroughness. Travis was the only contractor to do a calculation on our house, then come back and present a proposal in person. I knew I had my guy! Their pricing was beyond fair for top quality units, especially when considering all the extra work they did beyond just “changing out the boxes”, as Travis says. The final install was a work of art, and the team cleaned up with care. I will gladly continue to refer Travis and the ProSkill team to all my neighbors and friends. - Charles H., Magic and Zoe, Anthem Resident

ASK DOREEN

Still Underwater. NOW WHAT?

Dear Doreen, I’ve waited and waited hoping the market would catch up to what I owe on my house, but it hasn’t happened. There aren’t many short sales now but it is an option I’m considering. I have not missed a payment, but there is no way I can sell without writing a check at the end. I don’t have the money to do that. What are my options besides a short sale, if any? Looking for a Way Out... Dear Way Out, After executing well over 100 short sales with our intelligent, motivated Short Sale Negotiator, I say explore every other avenue first. Contact your lender about alternatives such as refinancing or loan modification. As Send your real estate in short sales, each of questions to Doreen.Drew @ColdwellBanker.com these has drawbacks and benefits to consider. In any event, the lender will want to know if your hardship is strictly financial, or medical or related to job relocation. Is there a second loan? Do you have mortgage insurance? Do other creditors hold liens on your property? You will likely need the approval of all parties with an interest in your property. We are here to help, just give us a call. Doreen

The Jaguars (33-15) beat the undefeated Jackrabbits, by a score of 3-1, earning the school’s first team state title since the 2010 boys basketball team. BCHS Varsity Volleyball Coach Troy Dueling told In&Out, “It has been an unbelievable season, we

have had some ups and downs but have been able to fight through the adversity.” The team pulled it together as the season heated up. “We started playing our best volleyball at the right time and were able to make a great state playoff run,” said Dueling. “The Anthem community and Boulder Creek High School showed us great support throughout.”

A year ago, Tamara Lee, head of the tuition-based school, said the Caepe was seeking charter status. But in a recent email Lee said, “We are not going to pursue a charter and, in fact, we are closing the Caepe School.” The Caepe School opened in 2008 with grades K–8. Grades 9–12 were added in 2009, but were eliminated by November 2011 due to lack of enrollment. After 13 Years, KinderCare Closes A

fter 13 years of caring for kids, KinderCare will close its doors Friday, May 30, leaving about 60 families to find another source for childcare. Jennifer Swindig’s 2-year-old son has attended KinderCare since August. She’s shocked and disappointed by the closure. “I’m bummed. He’s built a relationship there. I was very impressed. I love the teachers.” Swindig was able to find child care for her son at Valley Child Care

and Learning Center after touring other facilities in the area. Dwindling enrollment caused the corporate office to shutter the center, according to KinderCare spokesperson Colleen Moran. Moran said KinderCare is working with the approximately 15 teachers from the Anthem staff to help them through the transition. KinderCare was the first licensed child care center in Anthem, according to Moran.

Starting Blocks Academy, a preschool program at Crossroads Church, anticipates opening fall 2014. It will serve as a Christian-based learning center serving families with 3- and 4-year-olds, with two-, three-, or fiveday-per-week options. Starting Blocks Academy, not a licensed facility, is promoting a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) approach in the classroom. Director Rita Robinson said the curriculum is designed to provide students with hands-on learning experiences and real-world problems in a Christian environment.

Liberty Bell Splash Pad Prepped for Heavier Use

T

he days of loading the kids in a hot car only to find the Liberty Bell Park splash pad closed are over. At least that’s the goal for Parks and Facilities Director Jim Metcalf this summer. Upgrades have been made to the pad to increase functionality. New pumps and feed lines have replaced the old, and river rock has replaced gravel to avoid clogs. Parks and Facilities also heeded parents’ requests to replace high-growing plants with low-growing ones to improve visibility from seating areas. And children will find some fun new additions. According to Metcalf, an inventory of spare parts will help prevent closures. THE

Readers react to Anthem’s first community-wide garage sale Saturday, May 17. [See anthemnews.com/ free-yourself] Is there a way for them to list what types of items are being sold at each house? For example, children's items, clothing, kitchen equipment, etc. That would let people focus on or avoid certain homes. —Topline Foods I think it was too many sales in too short a time. They should break it up to smaller areas and do more. —Jeanne Boulware I think do it in March when the weather is cooler! — Melany Herron-Sill Maybe we can alternate communities instead of doing the full town all at once. Also, maybe they can be more often say 1st Saturday of every quarter for X neighborhood. 2nd Saturday for the next neighborhood. I love the list types of items too! —Stephanie Sinagra I agree with Jeanne. Divide it into quadrants & allow each to do it 1x yr. It also allows sellers to shop! —Rebecca Trudeau A lot of us have our kids in sporting events from 8–noon on Saturdays, so it would be nice if it had gone later (in the cooler months) & Sunday afternoons, too. Definitely agree w/doing several times a yr! —Lisa Ring Tibbs JOIN THE CONVERSATION

Everybody Likes a Good Neighbor By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

W

hen I moved to Anthem almost 15 years ago, all my neighbors were new neighbors. There was a great spirit of camaraderie that can come only when you combine equal parts people, houses, water park, and stir. I remember impromptu Wiffle ball games in the cul-de-sac, carpools to farmers markets, and even the great Chip Seal Uprising of 2002.* Those were the days, my friend!

Friday nights, you might shift your son’s drum practice from Saturday morning. 2. Give a Map Sharing info about the neighborhood is helpful. Free community maps abound. While you might find getting to the community park, well, a walk in the park, your new neighbor may not. Bring a highlighter and offer to circle the grocery stores, your favorite mechanic, etc. Every time they use that map, they will think of that nice family next door.

I, for one, feel we’ve gotten kind of soft in our old age. New neighbors moving in sometimes barely get a head nod before we close our garage door behind us. Remember when the new guy in town was greeted with a bundt cake and a hearty handshake? Let’s bring that tradition back, I say.

3. Join Neighborhood Watch That’s a great icebreaker when greeting a new neighbor. It gets them informed and gives them an opportunity to get involved. It takes a village to catch an idiot, so add an extra set of eyes and make a new friend while maintaining the peace.

Here are some (positive) suggestions for helping out the newbies. (Save the tootsie-roll-in-thetown-pool stories for another time.)

4. Have Car/Dog/Yard/Noise/Smell Etiquette Your neighbors will appreciate your efforts to keep your

1. Bring a Bundt… Introduce yourself and bring a bundt cake. Or offer to take them to lunch. Even a pizza coupon would be welcomed by most new households dealing with the move-in crazies. This will give you an opportunity to find out if they have kids that might be playmates for yours and discover things about their lifestyle that might help avoid future conflicts. For instance, if he works

It’s Good for Your Health

A 2009 study demonstrated a positive correlation between how people perceive their connections to their neighbors and their reported health and well-being. Those who lived in more socially cohesive neighborhoods described themselves as healthier and with a higher quality of life. yard tidy, keep your dog quiet (and his business picked up), and keep your car from in front of their house. Be sure to give warning if you are going to have party guests. 5. Pull in Their Can Be nice. If their trash can sits too long at the curb, pull it in. Offer to take care of their dog and collect their papers when they leave town. Have their back. I thought those up without even trying. You can do much better, I’m sure. At the very least, you’ll be rewarded with a friendly neighbor and maybe even a new friend and Whiffle ball teammate! io
