A New Option for Gifted Students By Karen Goveia kgoveia@anthemnews.com

It seems there are a lot of gifted kids in this area, and Deer Valley Unified School District has decided to try to meet that need

by expanding the exclusive Renaissance Academy—a program geared toward gifted students operating out of Highland Lakes—to Anthem. The new program will operate out of Canyon Springs School beginning in August. Since the rise of a handful of charter and private schools enticed students to leave district schools, DVUSD has been working hard to draw students back by creating focus programs such as the Aerospace Academy (Anthem School), Mandarin Chinese (Gavilan Peak, Diamond Canyon) and Core Knowledge (New River Elementary). Until now, though, gifted services have been limited to the SAGE “pullout” program, cluster classrooms and advanced middle school classes. Families wanting an all-day, differentiated learning experience for their gifted child had one choice: Take a half-hour, twice-daily bus commute from Boulder Creek High School to Renaissance Gifted and Music Academy in Glendale.

Minimum Qualifications

Students must score in the 97th percentile on two of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) subtests, (including a minimum of 90 on the third subtest), or have an IQ score of 140 or higher. Students in grades 1-3 must be at least one year above grade level in math; two years above grade level in reading as evidenced by DIBELS and/ or DRA. (First-graders must also meet minimum criteria on a district academic assessment.) Fourth–eighth graders must exceed standards on AIMS in reading and math. Placement is based on test score (percentile rank), achievement (exceeds or above benchmark), and teacher and parent profiles of gifted characteristics. io The Rennaissance academy will have a focus on science, technology, engineering and math.

The program at Canyon Springs will have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focus. First- and second-graders will share a multi-age class; the program will include third and fourth grade. Plans include expansion to middle school within the next few years. “The staff at Canyon Springs is committed to being a model school for gifted services,” said DVUSD Gifted Services specialist Kim Lanese. “The school was also one of 12 in the state to be awarded the APS/NAU STEM Focus School for the Future grant... [for] specialized training in STEM education for teachers and administrators.”

Wrong Kind of ‘Cheers’ at Spiritline Competition One in Five Girls

oulder Creek High School’s Spiritline competition team brought pride to the school during nationals in March, but a cloud of disappointment quickly dulled the achievement. The team traveled to Anaheim, Calif.—a trip with a price tag of nearly $25,000 for the 45 teammates, according to a booster club newsletter— to finish 12th nationwide. And now, the team faces disciplinary action.

Following the incident, an announcement on the team’s blog stated, “due to an ongoing investigation of recent events last weekend and with the support of the athletic director, the 20122013 banquet has been cancelled.” DVUSD spokesperson Ashley Morris confirmed there was an incident during the trip, but declined to provide specifics as to the nature of the infraction or how many students were involved. “The cancellation of the banquet was one of the disciplinary actions,” Morris said. alcohol violation range from a 10-day suspension from school and suspension from team sports participation, to expulsion. [See “Alcohol Policy,” right.] “The Deer Valley Unified School District has very high standards for all district athletes and holds them accountable to these standards. All student-athletes and parents are expected to act in accord with the principles established by the Sportsmanship/Code of Conduct Form… Athletic participation is a privilege and the safety of all students remains a top priority for the district,” Morris said in an email. It is not clear whether different disciplinary action was meted to individual students.

Cheering Changes

Spiritline’s head coach Lisa Colgan and assistant coach Jessica Brubaker have since resigned, according to Morris, and will cede coaching duties to Jill Milnor and Rachel Hall, teachers at BCHS. It remains unclear whether the incident at nationals lead to the change in coaching. Also, the third competition team will be eliminated, according to Morris. The pom and cheer teams will compete at the state and national level. The restructuring is unrelated to the disciplinary incident. “It’s been in the works for a while,” Morris said, and the restructuring mimics the program at Sandra Day O’Connor High School. BCHS Athletic Director Matt Hreha declined our request for an interview. io

DVUSD ALCOHOL POLICY From the Student Handbook… Alcohol Violation (use, possession, under the influence), is defined as the possession or use of intoxicating alcoholic beverages or substances represented as alcohol. This includes being intoxicated at school, school-sponsored events and on schoolsponsored transportation. The minimum consequence is a 10-day suspension; The maximum is expulsion.

From the DVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct… • Use or possession of all tobacco or alcohol products requires a suspension of 20 percent of the next athletic opportunities from the day the infraction was discovered. • Use or possession of a controlled substance requires athlete to be suspended from athletics for the remainder of that school year and may face long-term suspension if the infraction occurred on campus, at an off-campus activity, or in school vehicle.

The card game of choice is something called “hand and foot,” but bridge is also popular, as are good old board games. The atmosphere of this meeting, which happens Mondays from 1–4 p.m. at the Anthem Community Center, is welcoming, and sometimes downright hilarious. It’s a social therapy of sorts for this 50-plus crowd.

“When my husband and I first moved here, this group made us feel welcome and I love it,” said Linda Samrick, a faithful attendee. Treasurer Wanda Hill sees another benefit. “It’s a way to stay sharp,” she said.

Go Getters Get Out

While the mood in the room is happy, all here share a common concern. They worry retirees who stay in Anthem year-round have the potential to become shut-ins. To their estimation, nearly 80 percent of Anthem’s retirees and 50-plussers stick around during Arizona’s summer sizzle. And, the Go Getters think they are the perfect prescription to keep them balanced and socialized. Marline Pierce, vice president of the group, said, “It’s a springboard for people to get involved;” a springboard that two-year participant Mary Casad (See GET on Page 33) THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2013 |

hen Brooke Schweigert of Anthem Swim answered the phone, the woman on the other end breathlessly described what had happened: “Oh my God, it works!” she told Schweigert. The baby floated to the surface, rolled over on his back and called out. Mom, only briefly distracted by a conversation and just a few feet away, heard nothing when her toddler plunged into the backyard pool. “Most people who have been through this say the same thing,” Schweigert said. “There is no sound when the baby falls in.” And, maybe that’s one of the reasons we all think it wouldn’t happen to us. Because we would listen attentively for the splash... We’d stay within earshot. We wouldn’t be distracted… Schweigert, who has been teaching infants to 6 years to swim for five years, was thankful the lessons paid off, but her reflexive response was, “Don’t leave your baby by the pool!” “Swimming lessons are just 23 |

How & When to Empty Your Pool By Nadine Shaalan nshaalan@anthemnews.com

I

f your pool is five or six years old and you find it really tough to keep the chlorine stable, the problem could be that your water is “stale.” That’s what happens, according to Sean Webster of Advent Pools, when water evaporates over a long period and the remaining water has a higher concentration of total dissolved solids and more calcium hardness. The result is hard-to-balance water and that dreaded white ring around the water line.

And, if you live in Anthem, he said, it seems to happen even more frequently. There’s really no cure except to refresh your water, said Webster, either by backwashing (which will dilute some of the mineral counts) or fully emptying and refilling your pool. You can delay the inevitable by diligently balancing your water and avoiding using shock. Before you drain… Check the thermometer. Webster warns against emptying the pool during summer: Don’t empty a plaster pool if it’s 90 degrees or higher or a pebble tec pool if it’s hotter than 95 degrees―the heat could cause cracking. While you’re at it, have that white line sandblasted. [See “Get Rid of the White Ring,” Page 29.] io

hile in line at the hardware store, W a man so thrilled by his discovery of how to finally eliminate the hard-

water ring around his pool had to share. Having struggled with the same pesky ring, I listened intently and with great hope. After all, I, too, had performed lengthy web searches, waded through countless blogs, and researched products touting miracles. Nothing helped. Not even a little. “Fill a spray bottle with muriatic acid,” he said. “Spray it on a short length of affected tile, let it sit a few minutes, then scrub with a wire brush.” He’d tried everything, he said, and that is the only method that worked. He omitted the cautionary bits of the procedure like the necessary protective clothing and eye wear, and the mention that your bruised knees, sunburnt neck and aching back may never be the same after hanging over the side of your pool for that many hours. BEFORE

AFTER

But given that pool professionals acid wash to restore a stained surface, and that our mineral deposits were beginning to form stalagmites, we thought we’d give it a shot. We proceeded with caution, wearing long sleeves, long pants, gloves and eye protection. Armed with a spray bottle of acid, a stiff wire brush and a putty knife, we attacked the spillover from the spa into the pool—the hardest hit area. The acid produced a satisfying sizzle when it hit the calcium, but the joy ended there. Five minutes of waiting and 10 minutes of scraping, hacking and scrubbing produced a renewed luster on the wire brush but little difference on the surface of the pool. Note that this tile is natural flagstone, allowing the mineral deposits to become one with the tile. A glazed ceramic tile might have produced a better result. But, not according to (See WHITE RING on Page 30) We tried straight muriatic acid and a wire brush on the area to the right of the spillover. Most of the calcium removed came off only when the flagstone chipped away. Elapsed time: 15 minutes.

Sean Webster of Advent Pools. “It doesn’t do anything,” Webster said. The pebbled surface of the pool showed no discernible difference. “I have not found an effective storebought product remedy in my almost 30year career,” he said. “The pumice stone is one thing most people go to, but that can damage the glaze on the tile.” If it really bothers you, Webster recommends you hire a pro to sandblast it. “It’s actually silicone, and it’s harder than the calcium deposit so it knocks it right off,” Webster said. Sandblasting costs about $3 per linear foot. Then, refill your water to just above the bottom of your tile, and as the ring begins to form, increase the volume of water in your pool just enough to hide the line.

Pool Building

is Back!

What you need to know to keep you from going under.

W

hether happy days are here again or we’re just taking another spin on the wheel-ofdenial remains to be seen. But I can tell you one thing for sure: There’s gold in them there yards. Back in the boom, you could pull out imaginary equity from your home and finance all kinds of “enhancements”― and a sparkling new swimmin’ hole was a popular choice. When the equity dried up, so did business for pool builders. Now that banks are beginning to lend again, they’re baaaaack! Over the past few years I’ve had the opportunity to try and resell homes that had pools built by some of these fly-by-nighters, and I’m here to tell you it’s been no swim party. If the devil is in the details, some of these jokers were summa cum laude from the University of Beelzebub. Most had a “taillight” guarantee and are nowhere to be found. When choosing a pool company, do your homework and follow your instincts. I’m not suggesting you steer clear from a newer operation, but I do suggest you turn the scrutiny dial up a couple of notches.

• Hello? If your contact person is difficult to get a hold of during the bid process, this character flaw will be magnified 10-fold when there’s a problem down the road. • Bells. Whistles. Deck Jets. Pay attention to the features and equipment you’re being sold. Many contractors will push things they do well or the things that make them big profits, and steer you from the others. There is nothing wrong with in-floor cleaning or salt systems when done correctly, and every type of filtration system (sand, D.E., cartridge) has its pros and cons. • Payment Plan Negotiate a payment schedule you are comfortable with and hold back a few bucks for the punch list. This encourages communication from start to finish. • ROC Visit the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (www.azroc.gov) and check on licensing history and complaints. • Think Twice Understand what it takes to maintain a pool before you make the commitment so it doesn’t end up like that boat/RV/Quad/Alpaca farm that seemed like such a good idea at the time. io THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2013 |

utterflies are self-propelled flowers,” wrote Robert. H. Heinlein, once-acknowledged dean of American science fiction writers. Lucky for Arizonans, we can soon marvel at thousands of these “self-propelled flowers” when Butterfly Wonderland opens Saturday, May 25. This will be the largest butterfly pavilion in North America and will bring the beauty of rainforest butterflies to the Sonoran Desert. The state-of-the-art facility occupies five acres of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation. “Our facility is more than a museum; it is a living, sensory experience,” said Dana Cooper, general curator of Butterfly Wonderland. Visitors will begin their journey with a spectacular 3D movie experience followed by a visit to the Chrysalis Lab (a butterfly nursery). The magnificent rainforest atrium is lush with flowering tropical plants and thousands of butterflies from around the world.

Not Just Butterflies

the Continent

Other interactive exhibits, from honey bees at work in their hive, to a live ant colony and aquatic Amazon creatures, will delight and educate visitors of all ages. Because the experience is interactive, no two visits to Butterfly Wonderland are alike.

Only the Beginning

The Butterfly Wonderland is just the first phase of a larger planned entertainment complex which will be called “Odysea in the Desert.” Completed, Odysea will be a 522,000-square-foot adventure encompassing 35 acres, and will be home to the largest aquarium in the Southwest, an IMAX theatre, an “Arizona Experience,” a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum and a “Taste of the World” culinary showcase similar to that found at Epcot in Orlando, Fla. Full completion of the Odysea of the Desert is projected to be sometime in 2015. We’ll look forward to that, but the Butterfly Wonderland is ready to open its doors right now. A nature-themed gift shop and a café will enhance your visit. So, get out, and be the first to experience this unique attraction. io
