Living In Anthem & Loving It!
it Takes a Village to Sell a House Dear Doreen, Why is it that everything goes wrong when I sell my house? I don’t know anyone who has had issues like mine. and all I hear from my agent is it’s not her fault—the blame lies with some other person or company. —Cursed at Home Dear Cursed, These days, it takes a village to sell a house. I don’t often write about how many people it takes to complete one transaction. It starts with the two agents, but then add about 10 people at the title company who review the file. Then, there’s the appraiser and
the appraisal reviewer. The lender adds another 6 or 7 people to the mix; there’s the home inspector and other inspectors, if needed; the home warranty folks add 2–3 people. Don’t forget the designated brokers from both real estate companies, a couple people from the sign companies, and a small handful involved in the marketing. I’m sure I left out someone but you get the drift. So maybe, just maybe, your agent is telling you the truth. It might not be her fault. There are lots of cooks in this kitchen, no matter how highly upgraded. —Doreen

or No Food Stress!
Whether it’s the pressure of cooking the pictureperfect meal or fear of overeating, food-related anxiety can crimp your holidays. We asked five pros for tips on surviving the feasting. By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com
D
ieters, diabetics, vegetarians, cooks… The days leading up to the annual feast can put chefs and diners in a panic. Maybe you’re cooking for a lactose-intolerant uncle or a nut-free niece. Or, you finally got your cholesterol back to planet Earth. Or, the biggie—will the mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie push you off the weight-loss wagon?
Don’t Sweat the Scale The average person will gain just about one pound over the holidays. “It’s usually because the foods we are eating are more caloric and we tend to eat more frequently,” said Sarah Jones, Mountainside Sarah Jones Fitness nutrition
counselor. “Some key things to remember are tuning into your hunger cues (mindful eating), focusing on the company of friends and family (and less on the food), and increasing (or at least maintaining) your physical activity level,” she said. And when guests arrive bearing edible gifts, “Just know it was made with care and love and intention. Look at it as a gift. Don’t look at it as a guilty pleasure.”
Be Selective
Stressing about holiday eating won’t get you anywhere. Chef Sara Siso suggests eating healthy, Sara Siso organic foods so you don’t have to worry about indulging. “It’s about making the right choices so you can eat as much as you want,” she said. Siso would know; she owns Chef Sara’s Raw Vegan Academy THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2013 |

Linda Buscher has to manage her diabetes as she cooks for her family. She alters the traditional recipes to have less sugar and carbs, and serves more of the vegetables she loves. She eats Linda Buscher from all the dishes, but keeps a sharp eye on portion control. And, she sends leftovers home with family. “I keep just enough of everything to have one more meal for Dick and I,” she said.
Toss the Turkey; Focus on the Folks For Terese Marsing, chief
organic officer for Topline Foods and a former chef, Thanksgiving is anything but traditional. “I don’t feel like I have to make any certain dishes or treats to create a happy holiday. I focus more on the people that will be with us to celebrate and try to create Terese Marsing a menu that will satisfy everyone (and their dietary requirements), but also make it easy to enjoy the time we have together,” she said. This year, Marsing is making beef bourguignon with creamy polenta (see photo page 11) and a green salad with DermapenTM Treatment

So, I try to offer a reasonable amount of healthy foods that taste great and look pretty, not a huge quantity of things people usually try to avoid like chips and candy or other sweets,” she said.
Savor Each Morsel DeAnna Di
Giuseppe an aerobics instructor, enjoys food as a gift to be savored. “Get a smaller plate and get a little taste of everything. Savor it. Look DeAnna Di Giuseppe at it, look at the
colors, the textures, smell it. Just really enjoy it and eat it slowly.” Stressing about eating can prevent satisfaction. “Don’t put a negative on it. Don’t go into it thinking, ‘I’m going to so overeat and I’m going to feel terrible.’ Just let yourself eat any of it and in really small portions and really enjoy what you’re eating,” Di Giuseppe said. If you find you’ve overeaten, give yourself a break. Eat your healthy foods the next day or at your next meal. “Eating shouldn’t be so stressful for people. It should be really fun,” she said. Whether you eat Tofurkey, Thanksgiving pizza or full-on traditional, don’t stress about the food. Remember, the table is there to bring family and friends together in thanks. io

THE POWER OF THANKFULNESS
Lourdes Morris, right, was able to transform her grief into something positive; an especially challenging task during the holidays.
Living in the now—grateful for the little things— can bring light from misery. By Dianne Ryan dryan@anthemnews.com

ere come the holidays, emotionally charged and stressful. You are not alone in wondering how you will get through the season in peace and joy. “Thanksgiving is just the beginning of the holiday season, and the intensity surrounding the holidays can serve to be overstimulating and overwhelming to many individuals,” said Cynthia Spencer of Daisy Mountain Family Therapy. “Excitement and anticipation—especially for children— can ramp up their energy levels and cause behavioral issues and stress.” Spencer recommends prioritizing what is important and not packing in too many things. “Don’t try to do too

much, spend your time doing quality family activities. The true heart of the Thanksgiving holiday is the ability to share time with your family and to be mindful of what you have to be grateful for.” Julie Caldwell, an family therapist in Anthem, said “Holidays are often the anniversary or reminder of difficult life experiences. It can be a time of high stress and high—sometimes unrealistic—expectations.” Her advice to those saddened by their memories is to keep “reminding ourselves of what we do have, even if you have to start small like, ‘I’m thankful for this sunny day.’” Look for things to add to your list and soon you’ll notice a change. “This string of thinking uplifts you and changes your mindset. Focusing on gratitude helps us to feel joy, which
creates hope and allows us to live out of an attitude of abundance,” Caldwell said. Caldwell also recommends handling sad memories by making new ones like Lourdes Morris of Phoenix. Lourdes lost her 18-yearold son Saulo to cancer. Instead of succumbing to the pain of her loss, she began a new tradition to recall his memory in a positive light. She hosted get-togethers at various venues on the monthly anniversary of his passing for one year. Then she worked with his friends to form an outreach group: Team Saulo visits hospitals on the holidays, giving out meals and toys and participates in Relay for Life. Lourdes reminds people to avoid visiting the past and instead, to live in the moment. Scott Ingegneri, senior pastor of Grace North church in Anthem, said it’s important to understand the power of what we say—the power of words. He suggests, “Be honest, transparent. Open up to someone. Ask people how they are, and how you can help.” There is great power in acknowledging and giving thanks for what we have. Our perception is a key factor in being truly thankful. “Perspective is everything!” Ingegneri said. “Perspective changes everything and it creates gratefulness. If you’re not grateful, you’re miserable. Thanksgiving really is where the miraculous flows. Jesus gives thanks to the Father and feeds thousands of people. And so it opens the miraculous; it’s a principle.” io Angela D’Angelo contributed to this story.

The Birth of AN AMERICAN TRADITION
By Linda and Dr. Dick Buscher ldbuscher@anthemnews.com
N
o one knows for sure the exact date in 1621 when the newly arrived Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn meal that would be known as America’s first Thanksgiving. But it would take 242 years for that day to inspire the annual, American celebration we now love. It took the fortunes of a terrible Civil War, a spunky editor of American Ladies’ Magazine and a beleaguered, war-weary president to come together in 1863 to start this great American tradition. September 1863 began with the forces of the Union Army completing a summer of great battlefield victories. The most important of those victories occurred on July 1, 2 and 3 around the small farming community of Gettysburg, PA. After three days of fighting, best estimates showed the Union Army and the Army of Virginia had suffered between 45,000–51,000 casualties total, including 3,155
Union soldiers and an estimated 4,708 Confederate soldiers killed in action. The Union still stood and Gettysburg would prove to be the turning point of that terrible American Civil War. September 1863 found President Abraham Lincoln preparing to speak at the soon-to-be dedicated National Cemetery at Gettysburg. Sarah Josepha Hale had been lobbying President Lincoln since the beginning of his presidency, to declare an annual national day of thanksgiving. On Sept. 28. 1863, Ms. Hale once again urged the president to declare that the “day of our annual Thanksgiving (be) made a National and fixed Union Festival.” This time Lincoln agreed with Hale and on Oct. 3, Lincoln issued a Proclamation of Thanksgiving to his fellow citizens “to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise….” Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg on Nov. 19 to deliver the impassioned Gettysburg Address. A week later, on Nov. 26, the fourth Thursday of the THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2013 |

month, Lincoln, Hale and the American people across the Union celebrated Thanksgiving Day. Since then, Americans have celebrated Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November with the exception of 1939 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the celebration to the third Thursday of November to lengthen the Depression era Christmas holiday shopping season. The American people did not like this change, and by 1941 Roosevelt
reluctantly signed a bill returning Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday. So as you pause in thanks this year, remember those who came before to make this day a special American holiday. It was the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians who first gathered, but it was the unrelenting efforts of Sarah Josepha Hale and the proclamation of Abraham Lincoln that engenders us each fourth Thursday of November to celebrate America’s Thanksgiving Day. io

Classic Prickett
I’m, Like, Soooo Bored By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
B
elieve it or not, kids had a lot of fun in the days before Internet and video games. Kids even had fun (gasp!) before TV. When my kids whine about having nothing to do, I wax nostalgic about my childhood during the Stone Age. They scatter faster than I can say “When I was a kid…” But the days of treasure hunting at the dump (one of my fondest memories and the cause of several illnesses) are long gone. Still, I have a hard time when I hear kids—and adults!—whining about nothing for kids to do here. I have an even harder time when I hear vandalism is perpetrated by otherwise wonderful children who are simply (sigh) bored. We have at least two theater groups for creative types yearning to express themselves (in a more positive way). When my son signed up for football, he had four choices (three tackle, one flag). Between the community center, schools and clubs, you can play soccer from the time you’re out of diapers until the time you’re back in them. Most nothing-to-do bellyaching is

associated with the 12- to 16-year-old crowd. This confounds me as my teen never seems to have time to clean her room, do chores or finish homework. She learned years ago that whining about boredom will result in parental redirection to one of those delinquent duties. She’s rarely bored. Maybe she discovered one of the many book or anime/manga clubs. Or, she got involved with teen scrapbooking, duct tape art or the teen planning committee at the library. There are countless school sports and clubs. And, most churches have youth groups that meet a couple times a week. They’re supervised, so there’s less chance of hanky and/or panky. There is a book full of classes and activities at the community center. Beyond that, we’ve got a 63-acre park with ball courts and skating rinks, and miles of hiking/biking trails beyond the backyard. How much extra time do they have, anyway? Kids need safe opportunities to socialize, test boundaries and discover who they are. As adults-intraining, they need parents to help them choose the right Petri dish. io TWOOFREEELESSONSS withhtheepurchaseeoffanyy Guitar,,Piano,,orrDrummKitt untillDecemberr31,,2013!
