NEWS » COMMUNITY
Businesses to Development Director: ‘We’re Ready to Grow’ By Karen Goveia kgoveia@anthemnews.com
C
reating jobs is job No. 1 for the City of Phoenix, said Christine Mackay, the city’s new director of community Christine and economic Mackay development. And, while the North Corridor’s development is a little premature, Phoenix is poised for positive growth. “Phoenix is prime [for continued commercial development]... City council and city managers have a strong focus on creating economic development and creating jobs in the community. That is our No. 1 goal— job creation.” And, said the former economic development specialist for Chandler, the tables have turned from a few years ago when businesses were cutting back to stay afloat. “As we meet with companies… they’re talking about reinvesting and creating new jobs. The message is ‘we’re ready to grow,’ ” Mackay said. To encourage that growth, Mackay said the city will focus on bringing infrastructure improvements (water, sewer, fiber, power and streets) to commercial land to make it shovelready for developers. Downtown revitalization continues as Phoenix strives to become a destination city. Mackay hinted that
a number of requests for proposals (RFPs) will be going out in the coming months for high-density residential and retail developments. But those hoping to see commercial growth and retail development along the northern I-17 corridor near the new John C. Lincoln Sonoran Emergency Center will likely have to wait a little longer. “I think that area is coming into its prime for retail and commercial development, but it’s probably a little premature… As growth continues to push in that area over a year or two, you’ll see retailers come in,” she told In&Out. Mackay speculates hotels, restaurants and retailers will flock to the area once residential rooftops fill in the map. io

The Test of
One Man’s Spirit
Jerry Ruger, tending to his passion after life threw him unimaginable challenges. By Brad Wood bwood@anthemnews.com
A
fter witnessing the horrors of war, World War II Correspondent Ernie Pyle wrote, “The human spirit is just like a cork.” Indeed, when forced to the bottom, the spirit strains toward the top. Businessman Jerry Ruger, owner of New River’s Claws & Paws, knows what it is to be deep in the dark waters of life. He also knows of the journey back to the top.
Despite his success in the elite world of show dogs, Ruger faced an unimaginable heartbreak.
The Crash In 1997, Ruger’s life fell to pieces. He received the call every parent fears. Ruger’s 24-year-old pregnant daughter Bennye and her husband were in a car crash. Husband Matt had died... Bennye was being
Ruger’s 64-year life has been diverse. The native New Yorker has a degree in Biochemistry, has been in the grocery and liquor business, and was a Realtor. But his passion goes well beyond those things. His passion is for dogs.
Going to the Dogs “I started when
I was 12,” said Ruger. “Some kids went into 4-H. I went into showing dogs.” Ruger worked his way up through the dog judging world as an owner/trainer. He owned and bred champion show dogs. His results and reputation earned him a spot as a judge at the world’s foremost dog show, Westminster. 16

CURRENTS » PEOPLE kept on life support. “I collapsed,” Ruger said. Advised to end life support for his daughter, Ruger agonized. “I couldn’t do it,” he said. In the midst of this tragedy, doctors told Ruger the baby could be saved. Ruger’s world was spinning. How does one lose a child and gain a granddaughter almost at the same moment?
The Decision With the baby saved, Ruger faced saying goodbye to his daughter. “God said, ‘pull the plug’,” said Ruger. “If she was meant to live, she would. If she wasn’t, she would die.” Two minutes after doctors removed support, Ruger lost his daughter. The crash is something Ruger doesn’t talk about much. He spent four years in therapy coming to terms with the loss. “Even to this day, it’s still unreal,” he said. Dad, Again Ruger made another choice: to raise the new baby himself. Marissa, now 17 and off to college next year, looks like her mom. “It keeps my daughter alive,” Ruger said. Marissa had been a gift. Soon, she would become a lesson in perseverance.
‘Mr. Ruger, You Have Only Months to Live’ As if life hadn’t
already dealt Ruger and his family enough, this blow hit hard. He received a dire diagnosis, an unfamiliar disease called amyloidosis. It’s a rare condition in which an abnormal protein builds up and can lead to life-threatening organ failure. Doctors gave him six months. “It wasn’t real to me,” said Ruger. “I didn’t believe it was to be.” With the help of his daughter Rennye, Bennye’s surviving twin, Ruger sought treatment in London, then in New York. Doctors at Sloan Kettering told him to go back to Phoenix for chemo. If you survive
that, we’ll take it from there, they told him. Today Ruger is, remarkably, nine years in remission. But the disease took its toll. He lives with shortness of breath, as his lungs and heart have hardened, and he’s put on weight from Marissa, at 13, who lack of exercise. Ruger raised as his own Unable to fall daughter. back on his previous careers, Ruger returned to his passion.
New River, New Start “I knew a lot
of people in the grooming business and I practiced grooming so I could do it,” said Ruger. With the sound of trimmers and dogs coming and going, Ruger has found his place in New River. “I enjoy the dogs and the people that come here,” he said. Facing the death of a daughter, unexpectedly becoming a father and confronting the prospect of his own death, Ruger has learned much about life and himself. Many of those lessons have come from Marissa. “I have learned humility. I was an only child and a perfectionist. With her, I have learned to tolerate things. She taught me to accept,” shared Ruger, and added, “She’s a great gift.” With the perspective gained through facing life’s most difficult challenges, Ruger now provides encouragement for others: “I go through hard times, too. Think positive, be around good people and God will get you through it.” io

Everything Small is Big Again By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
B
ig cell phones are back. If they get any larger, we might be back to the “brick phones” of the 80s. Could big hair be next? I’m considering buying the new iPhone 6 Plus but before I do, I’ll need to have my pants pockets let out. Bigger isn’t necessarily always better. Wasn’t it just a few years ago that the tensieweensie Motorola Razor was all the rage? Everything small is big again I guess. The new bigger phone appeals to me because I can read my texts without upping the font setting to “almost blind” (and succumbing to the cruel taunts of my children), but I have real concerns as to where this arms race is headed. When I was just a little guy in the early 60s, the amazing transistor radio had just burst onto the scene. It was light, portable and, back then, a pretty amazing piece of handheld technology. Fifteen years later,

nearly every (so-called) cool teen had a 30-pound “boom-box” lashed to the side of their head. I was neither cool enough to pull off that look, nor rich enough to afford the two dozen D-cell batteries required to power those behemoths. Somehow, I survived. Now, the technology of a smartphone (only when accompanied by a smart user) is an amazingly complex and versatile piece of equipment. It’s a camera, video recorder, voice recorder, calculator, address book, map, computer, wrist watch (minus the wrist), flashlight and, oh yeah, a phone. Like 99.3 percent of the population, I’m 100-percent reliant on mine. I can’t even make a trip to the restroom without mine for fear of an acute case of separation anxiety. (Was that an “over-share?”) My biggest fear now is the smartphone will go the way of the portable radio and everyone will be toting around 80-inch smartphones next to their head. Well, at least I’ll be able to read my texts. io
