rules are for everyone
Dear Doreen, I don’t know who to complain to so I thought I’d just “go public.” tell me, is it legal for my neighbor—a real estate agent—to put a “for sale” sign in her yard with her home phone on it, and no mention of her being an agent? What’s worse is I happen to know she has no intention of selling her house but is just using it to draw buyers to sell other houses to. That sounds crooked to me. There must be a rule! —By the Book Dear By the Book, That’s a new one on me! according to a recent article in a Realtor
publication, such unethical activity is becoming common. article 12 of the Realtor code of ethics strictly prohibits false advertising of any kind. according to this article your neighbor should post a sign saying “For information regarding real estate in this neighborhood, call…” and include the name of the brokerage she is associated with. If you want to file a complaint, you can contact: Arizona Association of Realtors 255 east osborn Road, Suite 200 Phoenix, AZ 85012 602-248-7787

What About Arroyo Grande?
I
read with interest, Larry Busch’s letter [“Cash Purchase Result of Poor Planning,” In&Out, Oct. 31] about the ACC emptying the enhancement fund for a partially used building. I am very concerned that the ACC is not working in our best interest. When I asked the Parkside staff about adding a park to our isolated community (Arroyo Grande), when in fact there is available land, I
was told “the Council has no intention of building more parks.” I ask myself who is running this community, the homeowners or a select group of highly paid administrators who have no idea what our needs are? I will continue to fight for another park here in Arroyo Grande and to spend money on enhancements that benefit all of Anthem.

hen you walk into the Walmart in Anthem, 80-year-old Virgil Fairbairn might greet you with, “Welcome to Walmart!” But, unlike most other greeters, he will follow up quickly by asking whether you are a veteran. Or, if you know anyone who is a veteran. Answer “yes,” and he’ll want
a picture in uniform. So far, Virgil’s posted more than 300 images of American heroes in the store’s south lobby. The former Army man looks at the patriotic wall with a humble pride. “Look at them. Some are happy.” And then, he points to an image of a flag draped-coffin. “And some gave all.” io

How You Can Help Female Veterans photo by brad wood
By Nadine Shaalan nshaalan@anthemnews.com
A
recent interview with Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame inductee Mary Ann Derryberry [“In the Spotlight,” In&Out, Oct. 17 & 24] introduced many to Mary Ellen’s Place, an affordable housing place for female veterans. A handful of readers responded with a desire to support the organization that provides such critical assistance to women
veterans in need. So, we asked the Joan Sisco, president of Veterans First, the organization behind the residences, what would be most helpful. It’s no surprise that financial assistance topped the list of needs, as Mary Ellen’s Place provides rental assistance to women vets who just need some time to “take a breath,” said Sisco. “We also provide, at no extra cost to residents, cable
TV in the community living room, a phone for their use, and Wi-Fi for their computers along with two community computers,” Sisco said. So while people might find they have household items they think would be of use for Mary Ellen’s Place, more often than not, it would be more helpful if people sold those items and donated the proceeds to Veterans First for use by Mary Ellen’s Place. io
cash is best, but these will help… For Mary Ellen’s Place • Electric pencil sharpener • Good rolling office chairs (2) for computer desks • Pots, pans, cooking utensils • 13-gallon garbage bags • 5-drawer vertical dressers (lateral dressers are too big) • Laptop computers
Veterans First assists women veterans who do not reside at Mary Ellen’s Place. Donations of goods can be useful for these women. Consider donating these items: • Laundry soap (Tide or Gain) • Dish soap • Shampoo/conditioner • Liquid soap • Toothpaste • Hand lotion
• Notebooks • Paper • Pens • Toilet paper • Liquid all-purpose cleaner • Non-perishable food
Donate cash or items: Veterans First at 602-841-7663 or info@veteransfirstltd.org. THURSDAY, november 7, 2013 |

Love a Parade… Even More
in&out staff photo
By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

ith the possible exception of the horse puck patrol, everybody loves a parade! I’ve had the honor of manning the corner of Gavilan Peak Parkway and Whitman Drive as a Veterans Parade announcer every year. Obviously, they set the announcer bar pretty low. So, I’ll be back this year and hope to see you. And, here are some tips will make a fun day even “funner.” Stake Your Place Check out the parade route on the map in the parade guide included in this magazine. Make note of where the announcers will be located; we are positioned about a block or two apart. If you happen to go to the parade without this guide, just ask an announcer. If you like to hear the participants as they’re announced, park your lawn chair close to an announcer station (and his speakers). If not, don’t. If you set up camp right next to me and ask me to turn the volume down, I will tell you, as diplomatically as possible, “no.” Happens every year. Aspiring Photographer? Unless the earth’s rotation changes anytime soon, you’ll want to be on the east side of the street, so the sun is to your back, and in the faces of your subject. They may be

squinting, but you won’t get shadowy memories. Make It Special for the Special Ones Everybody loves a parade and nobody likes a ninny. Be respectful and considerate of others, especially the kiddos and your elders. This very well may be the youngster’s first parade, and could be the oldtimer’s last. Don’t ruin their memory for the sake of yours. If someone beat you to your favorite spot, don’t move their stuff. Yeah, I’ve seen that a few times. Parades Are Noisy Bring earplugs just in case someone in your clan needs them. If your pet gets spooked by loud noises—and most do—leave him home. Come Stocked Snacks, water, sunscreen, hats and jackets. November is funny when it comes to weather. I’ve seen sunny and warm at 10 a.m. become windy and cloudy at 11. Flag Etiquette When the Color Guard passes, please show the respect our flag deserves. Please, stand if you can, remove your hat and remain quiet. Veterans can salute, others can place their right hand over their hearts. Sadly, I’ve seen too many cases where the crowds are oblivious to the American flag and those who fought for it. This is a great teaching moment for the little ones. io THURSDAY, november 7, 2013 |

onoran Boulevard has been on the books since 1987 as a future link between I-17 and northeast Phoenix, and it looks like the exit onto the scenic Sonoran Desert Preserve is about to be completed, along with a new name. photo by brad wood
News » community For years, freeway signs labeled the exit “Sonoran Boulevard”―until Oct. 26 when ADOT crews swapped the signs out to read “Dove Valley Road.” Following a survey of the residents, City Council voted on the name change in 2012. Plans to connect the road to the completed on-ramp were delayed during the economic downturn, but now with the John C. Lincoln Sonoran Health and Emergency Center under development, that last stretch of Dove Valley Road is now being finished by Macerich, the developer of the project. Exit 222 is expected to be ready for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 9 a.m., and will connect to Dove Valley Road, which continues for approximately four miles before becoming Sonoran Desert Drive. “The road’ll probably be open, though, for public use … maybe three or four days prior to the actual ribboncutting ceremony,” said Chris Kowalsky, City of Phoenix engineer. No specific date has been set for the opening of the Sonoran Desert Drive, the exit just south of Dove Valley, but the city tentatively plans to have it
connected to North Valley Parkway in December 2015.
Path to Sonoran Paradise
Meanwhile, final touches are being applied to Apache Wash Trailhead off Dove Valley Road/Sonoran Desert Drive, scheduled to open 8 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 9. The trailhead will accommodate parking for 200 cars as well as horse trailer parking, and will lead to nearly 31 miles of trails in the City of Phoenix Sonoran Preserve. Progress continues on the ceramic tile murals along three bridges on the newly opened Sonoran Desert Drive/ Dove Valley Road. The bridge-side murals are made up of nearly 300 precisely numbered 12.5-inch-square and 12.5-inch-by-7.5-inch panels, each containing 900 decorated ⅜-inch ceramic pieces. Artisans in Italy made all the unique panels. Workers hope to have all the panels perfectly aligned and attached in time for the official opening of the trailhead on Saturday, Nov. 9. Until the Dove Valley exit opens, visitors can get to the trailhead via North Valley Parkway off the Carefree Highway exit. io Apache Wash Trailhead Opening 1600 E. F
ew would call the drive from Anthem to L.A. an enjoyable journey through scenic wonders. This southwest corner of Arizona and eastern California receives little rainfall, and roadside vegetation reflects the harshness of the Sonoran and Mohave deserts. But, just when you think you will never escape from a landscape dominated by millions of creosote bushes, you arrive at a mountain summit that in 1942 housed the headquarters of the world’s largest Army post. Today, a mid-desert gas station and coffee shop remain, sharing the location with one very special military museum—the General Patton Memorial Museum. It was 1932 when an entrepreneur from Alabama, Joe Chiriaco, built and operated a gas station and general store alongside the newly opened U.S. Highway 60 on what then was known as Shaver Summit. His business ventures thrived, but in March 1942, a different type of highway traveler stopped by what was now being called Chiriaco Summit to speak with Joe. This visitor wore the uniform of the U.S.

Army and Joe Chiriaco soon learned the man’s name: Maj. Gen. George Smith Patton Jr., commander of the Army’s First Corp. Gen. Patton had just been ordered by the War Department to prepare American soldiers to engage the German army in North Africa. He needed a harsh environment to prepare his men for desert warfare, and Joe Chiriaco’s unincorporated small town looked like the perfect place to begin this most important assignment. In March of 1942, Gen. Patton established the Desert Training Center with headquarters at Camp Young near Joe’s Chiriaco Summit. Within a few months, the center was renamed the California-Arizona Maneuver Area (CAMA) which spread 350 miles wide (from Pomona, Calif. to Phoenix) and 250 miles long (from Yuma to Boulder City, Nev.). Camp Young would remain Patton’s headquarters, but 10 additional army camps soon emerged nearby. The soldiers learned to deal with rattlesnakes and scorpions, and ubiquitous dust—including in their weapons and their food.
Gen. Patton left Camp Young and the Chiriaco Summit in August 1942 never to return. “Operation Torch,” the allied invasion of North Africa, began two months later and the desert warfare training in the wastes of Arizona and California proved key to the incredibly brave American soldiers’ success. The CAMA camps were closed on April 30, 1944, abandoned to the dry wind and heat of the desolate deserts. The 7,000-square-foot General Patton Memorial Museum atop Chiriaco Summit along I-10 honors the man and his troops with a vast collection of World War II military equipment, uniforms, pictures and firsthand war stories. Appropriately, the museum opened at 11 a.m., Nov. 11, 1988—the 103rd birthday of George Smith Patton, Jr. So the next time you make that drive across what looks like today a boring, desolate desert, remember what happened here. Get out of your car at Chiriaco Summit, get some gas or some ice cream, and be sure to visit the museum dedicated to this great American general and his soldiers. This is one roadside stop that might likely bring a tear of pride to your eye. io
