Giving Thanks

To our friends and neighbors, a very big “Thank you” for believing in us. Thank you for your questions and your comments. There would be no weekly column if it weren’t for you. Thank you to our competitors; it’s your continued presence that keeps us working even harder for our clients, and keeps us keenly aware of how good we have to be to continue to excel in our business. A very special thanks to everyone on our team who supports us. We can’t do our job without you. Your enthusiasm and support is something we know we can count on.

To our immediate families—where do we begin? There is no way we could ever do what we do without your support during good times and challenging ones. As salespeople, each day we encounter numerous people who help make our day special. Thank you! We can only hope we’ve helped you as much as you’ve helped us. Most of all, we are thankful for the opportunity to work in the industry to which we are best suited, and to be able to make a positive impact on those with whom we come in contact. Happy Thanksgiving from Doreen & Amy

Every year the shopping frenzy starts earlier, and this year it’s careened past Turkey Day. How far will it go? At press time, Sports Authority was ahead in the race, moving online Black Friday (once known as Cyber Monday) to 12:01 a.m. Thanksgiving day (Wednesday night for the rest of us), until Walmart announced its Black Friday would start one week before Black Friday. That puts shoppers in the field while some turkeys are still pecking grain. Cold Turkey Twitter or Selfies with Aunt Susie By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

reak out the smart phones, tablets and talkie watches… The holidays are here! Society has come to the point where, in your hand, you hold every single speck of knowledge that has been gleaned over the last 400 centuries… So why even bother to acknowledge grandpa when he flies in from Kenosha? I read something today (on the Internet, of course) that describes “Pinterest” as “a place to create boards of food I will never make, clothes I will never fit into, crafts I am too lazy to make, fun quotes I will never be witty enough to come up with on my own and home decor ideas I will never be able to afford.” Sounds about right. I’m not going to climb up on my soap box and rail against the evils of social media because, frankly, I’m currently using the box to support my dual 27inch monitors. And, I’m not one of those “back-in-my-day” types either. Well, not always. However, I do think we sometimes are guilty of some digitally

bad habits that are usually at the expense of our family, friends, and never-to-bemade holiday memories. I know for a fact the Pilgrims did not text at the first Thanksgiving and the Indians were kind enough to wait until after dessert to fire up the smoke signals. So, maybe a little discretion, huh? Make it a point to put together a list of fun things to do like card games, ping-pong, a little Turkey Bowl football, or anything else to keep your attention on your family and your fingers off the keyboard. I’m not saying go cold turkey. Maybe you can blend a little old with the new. How about you and another generation or two take a crack at making that strawberry rhubarb pie you pinned last month. Even if it turns out like crap, it’ll make for a great tweet! Let Aunt Agnes tell you the legendary tale of how mom threw up a half-pound of tater tots at the family reunion back in ‘74, and post her reaction on Facebook! In the end, just make sure those around you are as happy as you look in your selfies. io
