ASK DOREEN
Agent or No Agent?
Dear Doreen, I’m confident I can buy a house without dealing with an agent. Here’s why: I work in the IT department of a large company, so I’m online most of my waking hours. I can do the research. I know the neighborhood I want. I know the home prices, where the shopping is and all about the schools. I am pre-qualified with my bank. How hard can it be? Give it to Me Straight Dear Straight, Technology is awesome. But, remember “garbage in, garbage out.” An error in the tax records—say the wrong square footage—often gets carried over onto websites where the value of the property will be misrepresented. I have seen houses with online estimates way too high and way too low. Make an offer based on a low estimate and you risk insulting the seller and losing the house. Do you have contacts with trusted lenders that offer better financing than your bank? Do you know a thorough home inspector? Does this house need a radon or mold test? I have been able to negotiate repairs, price reductions and other advantages for my buyers during the inspection period. I’m telling you straight: hire an agent to represent you; one who is an expert in your target area. Doreen

Denial or Reality?
Your perception of a situation is your assisted living isn’t accurate, yet you are reality, but do you really know the facts? following their lead? Many depictions create a perception that assisted living is not a desirable arrangement for your loved ones. How many times have you seen a nursing home in a movie and thought “I would never want to live there or put my mom or dad in a ‘home’ like that.”
Take away the emotion and the financial considerations and ask yourself honestly: “What is in Mom’s/Dad’s best interest?” In most cases, you already know they are not safe living alone. But if you have doubts, ask yourself this: Is Mom/Dad doing the following?
Consider, though, if your parent is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s or cancer. Will you hope for the best even though you know living alone is not a good idea for them? Will you completely disrupt your family by bringing your parent to live with you?
• Cooking nutritious meals? • Taking medication properly? • Steady enough on their feet that falling isn’t a high risk? • Are they around others at least four days a week?
In most cases, no decision is made • Getting enough exercise so until something terrible happens, forcing constipation and poor circulation a decision. T
he 10th Annual Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade was an outstanding success thanks in no small part to all the people who contributed their time. Without the financial support of our wonderful sponsors we would have never been able to give our deserving Vietnam Veterans their homecoming parade. No function of this magnitude could take place without the volunteers who work year-round to put on the bestorganized parade in the state. For those volunteers, it is a labor of love. They receive no compensation of any kind. We are very, very fortunate to have so many dedicated people who generously contribute their time and skills. Nothing is accomplished alone. Whatever happens is the result of a team effort.
The Daisy Mountain Veterans thanks you for supporting the veterans parade. What a statement it makes as we work together to honor what we hold most dear; our freedom to do what we do and our veterans who make it possible! We truly hope the day was as rewarding for you as it was for us. Mary Ann Derryberry

Second Senior Living Facility Draws Little Interest By Amanda Niemerg aniemerg@anthemnews.com
O
nly 17 residents attended Spectrum Retirement Communities’ Nov. 12 meeting detailing a proposed 160-unit senior living facility on Venture Drive. None in attendance spoke in favor of or against the proposal―a stark contrast to the 80 or so vocal attendees at February’s meeting for the recently approved Merrill Gardens facility on Meridian Drive. The audience seemed more interested in the general operation of the facility. Questions focused on design, activities, privacy, level of care, transportation and parking. The proposed design, comprised of a two-story assisted living wing and a three-story independent living wing, also includes a memory care unit. Asked whether Spectrum would consider lowering the entire building to two stories, Spectrum’s representative responded, “We’ve lowered a portion of it. I can tell you, getting the entire building down to 100-percent two-story would be impossible.” The three-story wing is within Anthem’s guidelines and Maricopa County restrictions, according to Anthem’s business liaison Rona Reznick. The 6.4-acre lot next to the civic building is currently zoned for commercial office space, meaning Spectrum will have to apply for a change of use to proceed. According to a letter sent to area residents, approval must come from Pulte and depends on positive feedback from the community. Another community meeting is in the works, but no date has been announced. io
FACEBOOK CHATTER Readers respond to proposal for second senior living facility. We don’t need all of the remaining land to be Senior Living Centers, we said no to Goodwill now we have Ace Hardware back.—Dustin Holm We need teenage living! But I think the assisted living centers move us closer to a Sun City-type of lifestyle and less of an Anthem lifestyle. I am strongly against this, there is plenty of land outside Anthem for these centers to build.—Jeremy Caraway JOIN THE CONVERSATION

as possible,” said DVUSD spokesperson Ashley Morris. Students enrolling in the schools’ signature programs, such as ROTC, American studies, sports medicine, or interior design, would be given priority in an otherwise first-come, first-served enrollment process.
Barry Goldwater High School could become the only high school in the region without a waitlist for the 2015–16 school year.
Both Jefferson Preparatory High School and Anthem Preparatory Academy are currently on a lottery system.
DVUSD reports that both Sandra Day O’Connor High School and Boulder Creek High School have very limited availability, with slots primarily in less-crowded grade levels and in specialty programs.
Ridgeline Academy CFA’s governing board is still researching the idea of developing a high school. DVUSD has land reserved for a sixth high school, but has no plans to build until about 2023, according to Jim Migliorino, associate superintendent for fiscal services. io

AIMS Replacement More Difficult By Sydney Marsing smarsing@anthemnews.com
T
he Arizona Board of Education announced the test that would largely replace AIMS for reading, writing and math. It’s called Arizona’s Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching (or AzMERIT), and is being developed by American Institutes for Research. AzMERIT will be administered to grades 3–10 beginning spring 2015. (Students in grades 4, 8 and high school will still be required to take the AIMS science test, as standards in that subject have not changed.) The biggest change: Students will not be required to pass the AzMERIT in order to graduate. The new test is built to assess how students are progressing on the college or career readiness track, not whether they meet the minimum requirements for their grades. The Arizona Department of Education predicts fewer students will pass the new test, as standards are higher. Results will provide “more meaningful reporting” as tests are comparable to those planned for Utah, Florida and in states using the Smarter Balanced Assessment test, which aligns with Common Core. Notably, ADE stated, “Arizona will control the decision making for all aspects of the exams including test design, test and item content, scoring, and reporting.” The new exam is administered: a computer-based version with new accessibility options, and a paper version for schools which are not yet properly equipped. For sample questions, visit azed.gov/ assessment/azsampleassessmentitems. io

ARCHERY is ‘Catching Fire’ By Sydney Marsing smarsing@anthemnews.com
W
hile archery has been around nearly forever, the sport’s popularity has exploded during the past couple years. The surge, according to Jay McAninch of the Archery Trade Association, is largely due to the popularity of the movie “The Hunger Games.” Jennifer Lawrence’s compelling performance as Katniss, with her signature bow, drove countless teens—especially girls— to archery ranges around the country, McAninch said. The movie, as well as other recent hits like “The Avengers” and “Arrow,” helped modernize the bow’s image by showing off the heroes’ skill in contemporary or even futuristic settings, instead of as part of a medieval backdrop. Membership in USA Archery has increased by 84 percent since the release of “The Hunger Games.” Youth membership increased 121 percent during the past year with kids 12–15 and girls representing the fastest growing segments, according to statistics provided by USA Archery. Women take aim at Ben Avery.
“We’re very excited to see the tremendous growth of our sport, said Denise Parker, USA Archery CEO. “People are connecting with archery more than ever before, and we see that reflected in our membership numbers and event participation. Thanks to movies like ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘The Avengers,’ people have tried archery and found it to be a fun sport they can enjoy throughout their lives.” The sport is especially popular in Arizona. “Every spring USA Archery Arizona hosts one of the top five tournaments in the world,” said Rick Bachman of USA Archery Arizona, adding they expect over 600 archers, including plenty of Olympic hopefuls to attend. “It is one of the few sports where an athlete can go to a tournament and stand right next to an Olympian,” said Bachman, who is also President of Desert Sky Archers. Desert Sky Archers’ membership has also grown from 14 to 46 members during the past year, attracting an even mix of recreational and tournament athletes. Barriers to entry are few. Ranges offer free intro classes and provide access to equipment. Desert Sky sees archers ages 8 to 88, according to Bachman. “We have had kids as young as 5… and a few that needed to wait a little past 8.” But archery is not cheap. The cost of equipment can be comparable to a new laptop. So try before you buy. [See “Where to Take Aim,” Page 19.] io

Ancient Skill Hits the Mark By Linda & Dr. Dick Buscher ldbuscher@anthemnews.com
T
hey attached a cord of animal hide to both ends of a flexible tree branch and created a bow that could propel a spear. Archeologists believe these first archers lived some 20,000 years ago in what is known as the Stone Age. Ancient Egyptians became the first known experts in archery some 5,000 years ago, using the tool for both hunting and warfare. Chinese archers rode in war chariots of the Shang dynasty (1766–1027 B.C.). The pottery of the Greco-Roman Period (332 B.C.–395 C.E.) features archers as a characteristic theme. The songs and folklore across early Europe tell of the legends of local archers such as Robin Hood. Now, this ancient skill is enjoying a new boost in popularity, though more as a sport than as a means of survival. Archers can compete in tournaments or apply their skills in the world of hunting. The Junior Olympic Archery Development program, sponsored by USA Archery, helps young archers learn to enjoy the sport recreationally, or to aspire to the challenges of Olympic competition.
