Living In Anthem & Loving It!

Fired by agent! Now what? Dear Doreen, My agent fired me! He said I was “not forthcoming with information,” I was not willing to cooperate, and I was not “reasonable” when it came to offers being made on my home. I am very reasonable! It’s the offers he was bringing that were unreasonable! You should see my house—It’s beautiful! I think he’s just not willing to work hard enough to bring better buyers. Can he really just fire me? What do I do now? How do I avoid another lazy agent like him? —Really Reasonable

Dear RR, If you really have been reasonable, then consider yourself lucky to be rid of this agent. But first, take some time to think over this relationship. Have you responded well to his requests for information or have you been slow to come forward? Do you work hard to make the home available for showings? Did you flat reject any of the offers that could have been negotiated? Strive to correct any areas that might need improvement. Realtors are most effective when clients do their part as well. —Doreen

But, when Pat met owner Cheryl ables, her anxiety eased. “It was obvious by your interaction with the residents that you cared about your clients, and they had a wonderful relationship with you and the caregivers,” Pat wrote Cheryl in a thankyou note. “The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson as beautifully appointed as anthem senior Living and anthem senior retreat are, Pat discovered the real “ornaments” were the smiles of the residents. “Knowing you have musical activities, therapy dogs, physical therapy, games, massages, hair care… conducted by outside people on a regular basis, adds to the ornamentation of the Pat’s mom, house,” Pat said. “the real Edie. ‘ornaments’ are the residents’ smiling faces and contented nature, and the staff who are outgoing, energetic and sensitive to the needs of the residents.” “I Couldn’t Be Happier For Mom” “It is true, there is no place like home, but when, and if, I cannot function in my home, I want to be a resident at asL or asr…” Pat said. “My mom has made so many comments about the delicious meals

Dollar Store Makes Event Special

I

recently went into the Anthem Dollar Store & More by Walmart to get 32 balloons for my husband’s 32nd birthday. I wanted to surprise him and have the balloons awaiting him in the morning with 32 little notes attached as to why I love him. The owner, Wynn Schimmel, was completely honest and said that if I purchased the balloons today, they would not make it till the next morning. I greatly appreciated his honesty because he could have easily just sold me the balloons, and I would have been highly disappointed the next morning. So, there I was, in a quandary as to how I was going to make my master plan actually come together. He then did the most unexpected, generous, kind gesture I could have ever imagined. He offered to meet at 6 a.m. the next morning (way before any business hours) and blow up

fresh balloons. So there I was the next morning with a gentleman I only knew as Mr. Schimmel, drinking my morning coffee, blowing up what seemed like an endless count of balloons. Not only did he help me tie the notes on, but also assisted in the difficult task of putting all of them in my car. I can’t say enough about this man’s unexpected kindness. Just wanted to give a special “thank you” to him for reassuring me that there are good people with huge hearts in this world. Thanks a million, Mr. Schimmel!

alloween decorations and treats have been in stores since September. Oh, the lovely orange and black! It’s a reminder that cooler temps are on the way. Just look at those adorable costumes for the wee ones. And the dog really does need that purple tutu. But before you go draping cottony spider web all over your bushes, wait a minute. Much to the chagrin of devotees of the dark holiday, Halloween decorations are only allowed one week before and one week after Oct. 31, according to Parkside and Country Club HOA rules. (Other HOA community rules vary. Check your docs.) So, put the tissue ghosts away for now, unless you want a creepy violation letter in your mailbox. Desert Hills and New River revelers rejoice.

t’s always a good sign when a vacant store becomes occupied; and the Outlets at Anthem is filling two vacancies. The Puma Store has moved into a 4,343-squarefoot space with shoes, sports apparel and accessories. And, the rumors of Joey’s of Chicago bringing its famous Chicago-style hot dogs and sandwiches to the outlets is finally materializing. “We’re pleased to add the Puma Store to our growing list of brand name shops and Joey’s of Chicago to our food pavilion options,” said Outlets at Anthem Marketing Director Sallyann Martinez. “Puma, known for offering high-quality athletic apparel that’s also fashion forward, is a great addition to Outlets at Anthem. There is also a lot of buzz and excitement about Joey’s of Chicago, particularly by those who love Chicago-style hotdogs. Joey’s is scheduled to open this fall.” As of this writing, no firm date has been set on the opening of Joey’s. Look out for seasonal shops: Posh Flops brings its blingy flip-flops back the first week of October. And, Calendar Club and Games is expected to open this fall with new and classic games and gifts.

Anthem Left Without Parks Director

A

fter serving for a little more than a year, Parks and Facilities Director David Smith resigned suddenly, leaving the Anthem Community Council scrambling for a replacement. Smith assumed the position in April of last year, becoming widely responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all ACC parks and facilities, as well as management of the department’s budget. Smith’s departure was announced at Council’s Sept. 25 meeting, but David Smith by that time, he had already vacated his post. When asked for comment, ACC spokesperson Shannon Wallace said only, “We wish him the very best in his future endeavors.” In the interim, Community Operations Officer Neal Shearer is filling Smith’s shoes. Shearer can be reached at nshearer@anthemcouncil.com or 623-742-6050.

Surprise! Council Approves Civic Center Patio

Holly Street Studio Architects + Brignall

Anthem Civic Center

N

eed a space to hold your next meeting or event, or perhaps a small wedding reception? You’ll soon be able to reserve outdoor space on the civic center’s future patio for these types of events, for a fee, of course. Council approved the purchase and installation of just the patio doors (at a cost of roughly $12,000) in May, so rejection of this proposal presumably would have left the building with patio doors to nowhere. Thankfully, the civic center renovations are tracking under budget, so Council agreed to pop for the actual patio at its Sept. 25 meeting. The total construction cost of just the patio itself with finished concrete is estimated at $18,482, however, with

savings already in the budget, the additional cost to the ACC beyond the approved construction budget is $8,500 for the patio. But what’s a patio without patio furniture? The board gave staff the go ahead to spend up to $5,000 on patio furniture. According to Council, funds for the project would not be an additional draw from the enhancement fund. Rather, it would come from a portion of the owner’s contingency sum, already part of the approved construction budget. Council member Tim Fyke was the lone dissenter on the vote. “The money is allocated in the budget, but if we stay under budget that money comes THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2013 |

back to us… so it really is costing us whatever that hard number is,” he said. A quick calculation shows the actual cost of the entire project (doors, patio and furniture) totaling roughly $35,500.

Proposed Uses For Civic Center Patio • Overflow space for large meetings

Pointing to ACC staff’s proposed use of the patio, Fyke questioned, “Someone’s going to have a wedding at the civic center? Makes no logical sense to me.” The plan may include hiring a part-time room coordinator who would be charged with marketing the 700-square-foot patio space to local businesses. io

• Registration area for events/ meetings • Reception area for weddings, banquets and large events • Gathering space for residents/ visitors/groups • Additional entrance/exit for after-hour meetings and events

Sonoran Health and Emergency Center hopes to have volunteers trained by its grand opening in December. COMMUNITY

ADULTS & TEENS…

New Way to Make a Difference Y

ou’ve seen the construction, and more recently, the sign. Sonoran Health and Emergency Center on I-17 just south of Carefree Highway, is nearing completion and looking for a crew of volunteers. The medical center, part of the John C. Lincoln Health Network, opens Dec. 9. “Even though Sonoran does not open until December, we would love to have our new volunteers through the application process and orientation and ready to go on the first day,” said Linda Llewellyn, director of John C. Lincoln Health Network Volunteer Services. “We need caring, committed adults and teens to contribute their time and

talent. Volunteering is also a great way to explore careers and meet new friends,” Llewellyn said. Initially, Sonoran hopes to find welcome coordinators with great communication skills for the Emergency Department. It also needs office support volunteers in Outpatient Medical Imaging who will have a wide variety of responsibilities assisting staff and patients as needed. io TO APPLY FOR VOLUNTEER POSITION Visit JCL.com/volunteers, or call Volunteer Services at 623-879-5765.

After nine years, Sherry Baer of Anthem decided to replace her struggling front lawn with synthetic turf.

Should You Fake it? By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

oes she or doesn’t she? Only her landscaper knows for sure. Artificial turf has come a long way since the days of that awful plastic junk we glued down to our back porch in the 70s. Some of the stuff they make these days is so good, I’ve actually had to roll around on it to confirm it’s not natural. Not a pretty picture, believe me. With water costing more than Cristal champagne in these parts (only a slight exaggeration), more and more homeowners are ripping up their sod and rolling out the plasticized polyethylene. Is it right for you?

The biggest hurdle

While the price can vary depending on the quality, preparation needed, and people providing the labor, you’re looking at around $20 a square foot 24

for a 10-by-10 patch of sweet green bliss, according to homewyse.com. The more you do, the less the cost, but not by much. The savings really begin after the turf goes down.

Goodbye maintenance No fertilizing, no cutting, and best of all, no water. If you currently pay someone to mow, weed, reseed and otherwise tend your turf, the end may justify the means. A highquality artificial grass is also very durable, lasting about 10 years or more. That said, it does fade over time and eventually our Arizona sun will turn anything into dumpster food. And while it stands up well to everyday traffic, I wouldn’t call it 100-percent “kid-proof.” My progeny once broke a boulder, for crying out loud.

Pet-friendly, mostly…

Animal waste will either drain through or can be scooped up and hosed off, and there are no issues with toxicity that I’ve heard of. Of course, if your dog is a digger or a chewer, you probably want to pass. The stuff also gets pretty hot in the summer and could blister your dog’s dogs. It’s not as bad as asphalt, but it’s hotter than natural grass.

Bug off!

Another benefit to artificial turf is it’s not particularly bug friendly. Since it’s inorganic, there’s not much for them to eat, so they move on to the neighbor’s yard. I don’t know of any studies showing it reduces scorpion activity, but logic tells me that when the cricket condos close down, the arachnids move down the street, as well. Crunch the numbers, check out some home shows, and make an informed decision. More and more are picking plastic. io

SECURITY DOORS

In Parkside, Now It’s a Breeze By Nadine Shaalan nshaalan@anthemnews.com

T

hey add beauty, provide security and allow you to throw your doors open with abandon to welcome cooler desert breezes. Security doors are a popular upgrade to homes in the area, and Anthem Parkside has recently made the approval process easier by pre-approving a huge selection of security door styles. Choose one of these styles, and get approved by Parkside staff instantly. You can choose a design not listed, but you must then endure the lengthier review process by the architectural review committee. We selected a Positano door from Steel Shield Security Doors, [a company that sponsors this magazine and whose owner is an Anthem resident]. After many years, the door still operates like new, adds an air of elegance and allows us to safely leave the front door open... even overnight. And, security doors also keep adventurous little ones from escaping. Will you get your full investment back when you resell your house? That’s tough to calculate. According to real estate broker Dennis Jones, “While a security door may not add monetary resale value, it will enhance the curb appeal and aesthetics which is an important factor buyers consider when shopping for a new home.” io

Good to Know

• A security door can cost from $700 for a simpler design to several thousand dollars for hand-forged designs or double-door versions. • Security doors can be powdercoated for durable adhesion of your preferred color. • Security doors usually require a key to lock from the inside or outside. Do not leave the key in the door or store the key within reach of the door. • Do leave the key in a known place in case an emergency requires quick escape. • Some companies offer a pushbutton lock to prevent entry while allowing those inside to exit without a key, but this type of lock increases the risk of locking yourself out.

Fast Facts About Home Security • A burglary occurs every 14.4 seconds.

• Typically, burglars spend less than 60 seconds breaking into a home. The more difficult it is to gain access, the more likely a w is to reconsider. • About twice as many residential burglaries occur during the day as at night. • Most burglars choose a firstfloor doorway as their point of entry.

fter Anthem Pets lost its president and founder, Barbara WardWindgassen [see “Saying Goodbye to Our Pets’ Best Friend,” In&Out, Sept. 12], the group has carried on her legacy by continuing to find foster and forever homes for pets in need, as well as returning lost fur-babies back to their owners. But Barb’s shoes are hard to fill. Join Anthem Pets in a memorial walk around Anthem’s community park for Barb Oct. 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. Twenty-dollar donations (no donation is too large or small) are encouraged but not required. All proceeds benefit Anthem Pets’ efforts to help animals in the area. Sign in at the red tent between the

community center and Anthem School. Wristbands will be distributed to those who make a donation. Starting point for the walk is on Freedom Way and water will be provided at the halfway mark. All family members are encouraged to attend, especially well-behaved fourlegged ones (on a leash, please). Make a donation in advance at anthempets.com and click on the “donate now” button.

Helping those who Can’t Help Themselves

Jody Ford visits with Phoenix, one of many dogs she’s fostered over the years. Making sure the animals have a safe and loving environment until they find a forever home makes fostering satisfying, Ford said.

By Nadine Shaalan nshaalan@anthemnews.com

I

t started about four years ago with a cat that was hanging out at the door across the street. The owners had moved, leaving the cat bewildered and alone. So, Jody Ford called Anthem Pets to report the sad scene and she was told to try to get the cat some food. Ford managed to capture the cat and bring it home. This was the first of about 50 pets Ford has fostered for Anthem Pets over the years. With a spare air-conditioned garage and a big soft spot for pets who sometimes get the short end of the stick, Ford is one of too few volunteers for Anthem Pets.

Mizerek said the availability of foster homes is going down, while need is increasing, making fosters the greatest need for the non-profit group. Some volunteers have had to dial it back due to, say, a new job, while others are just overburdened. “We have a decreasing supply of fosters, and an increase in the number of dogs coming into the system… we just need more fosters.” As soon as kitten season ended, the dog population spiked. And she also tries to help rid the animals of any bad habits. “Each one is unique. There’s something about each one that you just have to love.” io

of local climbers. More than 100 species of birds have been documented within the preserve, making McDowell a destination for bird watchers. Songbirds from northern regions overwinter in the Sonoran Desert, making October through February prime months. Docent-led hikes—including holiday hikes—on all five trails of the preserve serve most all interests and abilities. Discovery hikes are geared for children and wellness hikes are designed for those who need to get up and move. For more information about guided hiking within the preserve call 480947-8814. Brown’s Ranch Trailhead features a series of interpretive exhibits about the history and use of the preserve. It now

becomes the gateway to such unique mountain top destinations as Cathedral Rock, Balanced Rock and Granite Mountain. Brown’s Ranch trail also makes the long-awaited connection between McDowell Sonoran Preserve and Tonto National Forest. More than 200 parking spots, shade ramadas, fresh drinking water and restrooms at the trailhead’s interpretive center starts your hike off right. Twenty-four horse trailer parking spaces, hitching rails and water troughs make this an ideal equestrian staging area.
