Living In Anthem & Loving It!

Kids Want 2, Mom wants 1

Dear Doreen, My kids want a two-story house, they think it will be more fun! However I think it will be a lot of extra effort. So I am trying to convince them that a onestory home is more practical and a better investment. Maybe you can weigh in on this? —Older&Wiser Dear o&W, My first thought is why on earth are you negotiating with your kids on what house you are going to buy? This is a decision that is up to you! With that said, a single-level home appeals to more buyers. There are people who physically can’t handle stairs and those who don’t want them. Many buyers who will consider a two-story home will also consider a single-level. So, yes, it can be considered “more practical” or a “better investment.” However, all you have to do is look around and see the popularity of two-story homes. They are common and they re-sell all the time. —Doreen

Only the purchase of $2.3 million was approved at that time. Renovations and other soft costs were formally approved in May 2013. When Council voted to pay cash for the building, the agenda for that meeting included a motion to allow staff to proceed with the loan, even detailing the parameters of the loan. A cash consideration was not on the agenda. Council approved this“undesirable” option to pay cash without giving property owners—except the very few in attendance—an opportunity to provide feedback on this sudden change of direction. From the perspective of many residents, this action was nothing short of a snap decision countering years of research pointing to enhancement fund priorities having little to do with the purchase of this building.

Luxury Assisted Living… In Anthem! Keeping the Family Together

Until the opening of Anthem Senior Retreat, Cheryl Ables routinely helped families find other homes for their loved ones. “It’s always difficult to have to send families to homes that are far away,” said Ables. “Although they are good homes,

the preference in this multigenerational community is to have mom or dad nearby.” she said. “This means minimal disruption to the family and better quality of life,” said co-owner Sam Ile.

nthem is particularly proud of the men and women who serve this country, many of whom continue that habit of service beyond their discharge. The Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society recognizes those who continue to serve in an outstanding fashion. So it comes as no surprise to those of us who know her, Mary Ann Derryberry, discharged from the U.S. Marines 41 years ago, will be inducted into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Friday, Oct. 25. Derryberry follows Ron Tucker, inducted last year, as the second Anthem IN&OUT

Q

Derryberry, best known for orchestrating the Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade—now in its ninth year—also champions the needs of female veterans with a non-profit called Veterans First.

Constituting the fastest growing population of homeless, women veterans are the focus of Veterans First which created Sallie’s Place and Mary Ellen’s Place to provide support and low-cost housing for these Americans who have sacrificed so much for their fellow citizens.

resident to receive the distinction.

| THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17 & 24, 2013

You have given so much to the community; is this something started in retirement? I really started when our boys were younger, volunteering in school, Boy Scouts, church and such. When they got older, I served as disaster chairman for the American Red Cross, then as a docent for the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota and at Lambs Farm in Chicago. Then I got involved with the veterans in Anthem.

A

You have stepped it up in recent years with the orchestration of what is arguably the largest veterans parade in the region and your work with Veteran’s First. What is it about female veterans that has motivated you so passionately? I’ve been in the VA system since 1972 and saw firsthand how badly it needed to step up for women veterans. Back then,

Q

A

VERBATIM

I felt like an afterthought. The VA has improved some but it’s limited by its dependence on government funding. I couldn’t live with myself knowing women veterans were out there living on the streets. That just isn’t right. In your role as chairperson of the advisory committee for Veteran’s First, you see lots of situations with women vets. Does any one in particular stand out? Most recently, one does. She was a 12-year army veteran who got out once she was told her unit would be deployed for a fourth time. She knew she wouldn’t survive a fourth deployment. So, she got a car, job and an apartment in Phoenix. Within one year, her job shut down and she was unemployed. Every place she turned to for help told her that until she was living in her car, they couldn’t help. It was getting right down to that when, by the grace of God, she found Veteran’s First. She is now a resident of Mary Ellen’s Place (affordable housing for women veterans created by Veteran’s First through volunteers and donations) and going to school full time. But there are countless stories. Since 2003, we have helped and saved many lives. Several women have lived at Mary Ellen’s Place long enough to get back into the world as productive citizens. Several are getting their lives under control after suffering silently for years from MST (military sexual trauma ) & PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). It is a tremendous amount of work, plenty of bureaucracy and not enough funds. Do you ever feel like throwing in the towel? No, only frustration. Veterans First THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17 & 24, 2013 |

VERBATIM has been under the radar for many years and has a proven track record. That hard work is starting to be recognized and our hard work will be rewarded.

I get very emotional when I hear stories from family members of older veterans [at the parade] telling me they never thought they would be thanked.

Being inducted into the Veterans Hall of Fame must be the greatest reward for the years of work with the Daisy Mountain Veterans Parade and Veteran’s First? The biggest reward is getting a big hug from a new resident of Mary Ellen’s Place and hearing her say “where have you been all my life?” or “You are teaching me to love again.” And,

You always shun the spotlight in favor of shining it where there is need, but this is a tremendous honor. Don’t you want to bask a little? I still feel the same way, until several of my friends told me to use this opportunity to encourage others who have more talent and financial ability than I to get involved. Financial help is always needed to provide help in

stabilizing these women with rent, food, bus passes, car payments, car insurance and school payments, to list just a few items. Is there anything else you want to say? Yes, I do have one thing: There are what 30,000 people living in the Anthem area? Where are all those people on parade day? The parade helps define us as a community and ties us to the rest of the nation. Get up, take your kids and show them why everybody loves a parade! io

A simpler way to growing backyard vegetables. By Linda & Dr. Dick Buscher ldbuscher@anthemnews.com

O

ctober is the perfect month to start that fall vegetable garden, so here are a few tips to help get your garden started in convenient and affordable containers. Good soil is the key to vegetable growth. Our native soil is lacking in organic materials and nitrogen, so start with a good potting soil. Mix 25 percent native soil with a good quality potting soil. Bonus: It is very easy to pull those unwanted weeds out of your various containers. Water daily. Warm afternoons can dry containers out quickly and damage sensitive roots. Water daily, preferably in the late afternoon. Tip: Water passes through containers quickly, leaching much-needed nutrients from the soil. Fertilize containers more often to guarantee healthy vegetables. Location, location. Healthy vegetable plants need at least five hours of full, direct sunlight each day. Ideally, locate containers where they will receive full morning sunshine but are shaded by early afternoon. Pick your pot. Barrels, plastic-lined baskets, cut-off milk cartons and even

cement blocks can be home to a healthy vegetable garden. Expensive redwood or cedar boxes are nice but not necessary. Bonus: Containers can be raised to a comfortable height, preventing the need to bend. Tip: Terra cotta containers are popular but dry out quickly. Glazed ceramic, resin, plastic and concrete containers dry out more slowly. Avoid metal containers; they just get too hot. The volume of the container will dictate the type of vegetable that can be grown. For example, carrots can be grown in a 1-quart container, but cucumbers, kale, squash and eggplant need at least 5 gallons of soil. A 2-gallon container supports beets, chard, lettuce, green onions, bell peppers and cherry tomatoes. For more info, check out University of Arizona’s Cooperative Extension at ag.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/mg/vegetable/ container Jump start your garden containers with bedding plants instead of seeds to bring your harvest to table about a month sooner. Get out and get your hands dirty in your new container garden. You will be thrilled to sit down to a family dinner with homegrown vegetables. io THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17 & 24, 2013 |

FENCE

Above-Ground or In-Ground…

They’re Both Hot By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

N

othing like a little nip in the air, at least at night and early morning, to make me want to hop in the hot tub. Every morning at 5 o’clock, I take my coffee, a towel, and nothing else, if you must know, and do a 15-minute soak under the stars. If you’d like to join me (in spirit, not in person; that would just be creepy), let’s do a quick spa 101. Without getting too deep into bells and whistles, there are basically two options when it comes to buying a spa: Built-in (usually part of a swimming pool design) or above ground. Which is best?

Comfort Above-ground gets the nod. For the money, they have more hydro-therapy jets, molded contoured seating, can be easier to get in and out of, and you have more control over temperature and settings. Cost to Operate Again, above-ground takes it. My six-person spa is heated by electricity. It always stays hot because it has a built-in cover, and costs me about $8 a month to operate. On the contrary, a built-in spa is usually heated with gas. Calculating heat loss on a spa is very difficult, and varies greatly due to many factors, but a fair estimate is about $10 per use. If you were to run a gas spa 24/7, as I do my electric, you would spend a lot of time crying in your spa. Instead, you turn your gas spa on about 20 minutes before you get in. Aesthetics Built-in bubbles to the top

here. Many in-ground spas are part of the swimming pool and, with added lighting and water features, can be downright breathtaking. That said, the above-ground spa has come a long way. Manufacturers are doing a lot more with “portable” spas these days. It won’t be long before they offer the same look or feel as built-ins. Ease of Care Above-ground wins the day in this category, too. The fiberglass shells are easier to maintain and clean than plaster or pebble finish, a little bit of shock and dry acid are the only chemicals I ever need and filters are easily accessible for cleaning. If it gets too yucky, usually because one of my kids fill it with their friends and a bag of corn chips, I just drain and refill. Whichever you choose, get in and enjoy. Life’s too short and so is spa season. io THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17 & 24, 2013 |

“I think it’s very, very, Anthem. That’s all I can say. It’s intrusive and controlling. There is a central disconnect between the ACC’s stated beliefs about freedom and letting people live their lives.”

“I think the rules should be extended on the front end but I think the one-week restriction after the holiday is reasonable.”

“The week before is fine. The week after, Halloween is over and decorations should come down as soon as it is over.”

“I am fine with it. But if it were up to a vote, I would not support it. More time would be reasonable.”
