Credit woes in the new economy
Dear Doreen, We are looking to buy a house before rates go too high. our credit score is oK for the amount we need to borrow, but our lender said we can’t buy anything major until after the closing. She also said we can’t open any new credit accounts. What’s up with that? We want to apply for a new credit card to get hotel points (a huge bonus) and I’m afraid it will cause our home loan to be denied. and, what if our car blows up and we need a new one? How do we get around this? —Worried in Anthem
Dear Worried, Yes, the world has really changed when it comes to mortgages. I’m not a lender, but we represent many buyers who say the same thing. No credit card applications and no major purchases once you apply until the close of your new home. lenders check and re-check your credit all the way up to closing. “Calm down and carry on.” I’m sure there will be another bonus credit card offer and I bet your car won’t blow up :) —Doreen

Road Trip! The overly ambitious, overly planned, not-all-that-bad family getaway. By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
C
Objective To minimize pit-stops, provide cost-effective and nutritious snacks to the family while maintaining a fun-filled holiday atmosphere.
TRAVEL
The Plan Purchase fresh fruits, bottled water, low-salt/-sugar food choices, along with a few more decadent treats and sodas to be judiciously rationed with strict parental discretion.
all it wishful thinking, or maybe delusional thinking, but I really thought by putting together a solid vacation game plan, based on the pain of past experiences, a harmonious and relaxing time would be had by all. And, I really thought I’d nailed it this year. Silly me. Objective An alternative to dealing with the cost, stress, and potential cavity searches associated with flying a family of five to our vacation destination. The Plan Rev up the family truckster and head to northern Cal-i-forn-I-A on an old-time road trip! The Outcome Results were mixed, at best, (see comments below‌)

SNACKS
IN&OUT
| THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2013
The Outcome Treats were gone in the first 60 miles, courtesy of the backseaters. Water bottles opened, then left to boil in the cup holders. First pit stop at 61 miles, second at 74 miles. By second stop, intermittent destinations were raided to resupply the same caliber of crap that was consumed previously. Rinse, lather and repeat for the total 1,767 mile trip.
ENTERTAINMENT
Objective Provide multiple options to keep teen and preteen occupants busy, stimulated, and as quiet as possible. The Plan Optimize truckster DVD player and portable DVD player with several movie choices. Bring all required charging devices for phones, laptops and gaming devices. Supply ample reading material to counter the mindless options listed previously. The Outcome At mile 307, received a text alert that 90 percent of our family data allotment had been used. Small skirmishes broke out over which movie, whose charger, what was too loud, and which person broke the headphones. Reading material was never seen again but I strongly suspect it was pawned for roadside jerky.
ROUTE
Objective Avoid Los Angeles, and its brutal 24/7 traffic mess at all costs. The Plan Allow a little extra time to take a more scenic route by way of Barstow to Bakersfield to Monterey. The Outcome This part actually worked out pretty well, although when traveling through California anywhere five miles east of the ocean, it pretty much looks like Arizona with windmills. Once we reached our destination, we had a great time. Nice hotel, lots of viewing and eating creatures from the sea. And, an ocean view with every meal. Maybe next year we’ll just skip the middleman and rent a boat. io

Night Owls…
Go to Sleep!
F
or those who hate to let go of the day, research indicates it’s time to put out the light on that behavior for many reasons. Late-nighters know afterhours noshing is not unusual. And, it might be dragging you down. In a recent study, “eveningness” was associated with eating later and a tendency towards fewer and larger meals. Night owls also tend to have lower HDL (good)cholesterol levels. Night people also had more sleep apnea and higher stress hormones. Night types, researchers say, tend to have unhealthy eating habits and suffer from psychological problems more frequently than their more chipper morning counterparts. Researchers are looking into the relationship between chronotype (whether you’re a night person or a morning person) and obesity. How one is related to the other is mostly unknown, but short sleep duration and restless sleep are emerging as risk factors for obesity and its associated problems.
The study concluded that obese individuals who are chronically sleepdeprived compound the cardiovascular risks associated with obesity. Become a Morning Person Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think to become an early bird. According to a different study, you can adjust your circadian clock with just a week-long camping trip. For camping destinations, see anthemnews.com/camp-arizonafive-cool-campgrounds-for-a-quickgetaway/. The power of natural sunlight (and the lack of electrical light) will have you waking with the birds and able to feel more refreshed. “What’s remarkable is how, when we’re exposed to natural sunlight, our clocks perfectly become in sync in less than a week to the solar day,” said Kenneth Wright, the lead researcher in the Colorado University-Boulder study. io

here are so many day trips in central Arizona when the summer heat breaks, we present a few of our favorites… The 23rd Bye-Bye Buzzards celebration Saturday, Sept. 21 marks the migration of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum’s (arboretum.ag.arizona. edu) turkey vultures to Mexico. southeast of Winkelman. The 11-mile hike through this riparian ecosystem will leave you with wet feet, so be prepared. The Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon is always beautiful and no time more so than in autumn. A Red Rock Pass is required for many of the sites so be sure to get one. The ruins of Honanki (redrockcountry.org/recreation/cultural/ honanki.shtml) are easy to access and amazing to explore. The trails of Red Rock State Park (azstateparks.com/ Parks/RERO) are equally colorful during the fall. For the best hiking trails in Sedona, check out this app (sedonahikingapp. com/hikelist.php) for your smartphone
featuring info on 56 Sedona trails. It will help you discover some of the natural wonders of Sedona few have ever seen. Autumn is a big scary deal in Jerome. First Saturday Art Walks (firstsaturdayartwalks.com) are downright delightful in fall, and no place celebrates Halloween quite like Jerome. The mid-October Ghost Walk and the annual Halloween Dance Party are classics. Spend a ghostly night or two at the Grand Hotel (jeromegrandhotel.net) and join the best Halloween party in Arizona at the hotel’s Asylum Restaurant. (asylumrestaurant.com) There are many events across the Verde Valley (sedonaverdevalley. org) and other nearby attractions including the Verde Canyon Railroad (verdecanyonrr.com), Tuzigoot National Monument (nps.gov/tuzi), Montezuma National Monument (nps. gov/moca) and Verde Valley Wine Trail (vvwinetrail.com).

The Hopi Cultural Center is found at Second Mesa. Guided tours of Walpi (experiencehopi.com/walpi. html), on First Mesa, are highly, highly recommended. Remember, no photographs are permitted on the Hopi Reservation. Stay at the newly opened Moenkopi Legacy Inn & Suites (experiencehopi. com/hotel.html). Our favorite way to visit Hopi is to stay at La Posada

(explorenavajo.com/go2/navajo_ museum.cfm) Canyon de Chelley National Monument on the Navajo Reservation, just to the east of Chinle is best discovered through the jeep/truck tours offered. Most tours vary from four to eight hours in length. Alternatively, two paved highways follow the canyons’ rims to the north and south with many overlooks into the breathtaking views below. These drives are free and allow visitors to set their own pace. Stay at the historic Thunderbird Lodge or the Holiday Inn in Chinle. The “Round the Peaks Drive” circles the 43-mile loop around the base of the San Francisco Mountains with a wellmaintained gravel road (go-arizona. com/Around-The-Peaks-Scenic-Drive).
Finally, if you are looking for a four-legged ride to help you find fall in the Coconino National Forest surrounding Flagstaff, we recommend the wranglers at the Hitchin’ Post Stable (hitchinpoststables.com) along Lake Mary Road. Other nearby attractions are the Museum of Northern Arizona (musnaz.org), The Arboretum at Flagstaff (thearb.org,) Walnut Canyon National Monument (nps.gov/waca), Sunset Crater National Monument (nps.gov/sucr), Wupatki National Monument (nps.gov/wupa) and Desert View Watchtower (nps.gov/grca/ photosmultimedia/colter_wt_photos. htm). On your way down I-40, stop at the Grand Canyon Deer Farm (deerfarm. com). This animal sanctuary, more than 40 years old, delights anyone who loves to get really close to friendly hooved animals. Williams is a fine place to look for fall foliage. Bill Williams Mountain (hikearizona.com), the westernmost mountain peak in Arizona, soars to about 9,000 feet. A dirt road and a pair of good hiking trails lead through the aspen trees to the summit. Mountain Ranch Stables’ (mountainranchstables.com) wellmannered horses ride into the fall beauty of the Kaibab National Forest. Everyone gets a kick out of meeting the ranch’s “smilin’ horse!” Take the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams to the South Rim for a memory making tour of colors. (thetrain.com). A good place to get something to eat is in Seligman: Delgadillo’s Snow
Cap Drive-In (roadsideamerica.com/ tip/101) then follow the path of Route 66 Fun Run from Seligman to Oatman (azrt66.com/funrun.htm). Visit Grand Canyon Caverns (gccaverns.com) or hike to the Village of Supai (nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/ havasupai.htm). Most folks pass through Kingman on the way to Vegas. But, the Route 66 Museum, the Army Airfield Museum and the Mohave Museum of History and Arts make this a town not to ignore. At an elevation of 3,300 feet, the climate is almost perfect during fall. Skywalk (www.grandcanyonwest. com/skywalktour.php) is just 70 miles from Kingman, and even though everyone seems to be fighting about the road leading there, it is an amazing rush to “Walk on the Sky” some 4,000 feet above the Grand Canyon floor. While in the area, visit the Route 66 Museum (gokingman. com), the Army Airfield Museum (kingmanarmyairfieldmuseum.org) and the Mohave Museum of History and Arts (mohavemuseum.org). Plus, check out the attractions in Oatman (oatmangoldroad.org). Northwestern Arizona is the northern gateway to Arizona’s Colorado River cities. Travel south down AZ-95 to enjoy the river cities of Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City and Parker. All offer opportunities to boat and witness the bird autumn migration. io THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2013 |

The Heart of the Wild West… in Full Color By Linda & Dr. Dick Buscher ldbuscher@anthemnews.com
T
he Wild West happened largely in southeastern Arizona; The land where Spanish priests and soldiers first entered; where cowboys stood guard over large herds of cattle; where Cochise and Geronimo fought to save their people and their way of life; and where rip-roaring mining towns sprang up in almost every canyon etching into history names such as Tombstone and Bisbee, the Earps and the Clantons. This is the land of the Gadsden Purchase and a place where a series of magnificent Sky Islands rise from the Sonoran Desert floor to create unique and diverse landscapes and ecosystems.

Now under the watchful eye of the U.S. Border Patrol, area travelers should expect to encounter checkpoints with courteous agents and drug-sniffing dogs on most major highways. If you choose to travel the backroads, we recommend bringing along a local, knowledgeable guide. Now, go find fall… Kartchner Caverns State Park is a living cave off AZ-90, 52 miles east of Tucson. The autumn reopening of the Big Room Tour on Oct. 15 brings the Rotunda/Throne Tour and the Big Room Tour back to the public. Kartchner Caverns is our No. 1 must-see destination in Arizona (azstateparks.com/Parks/KACA).
A visit to Patagonia is like leaving Arizona. On a high mesa along AZ82, Patagonia—and nearby towns of Sonoita and Elgin—make up what is known as the Mountain Empire. Rolling, grass-covered hills with herds of grazing horses make for a landscape more reminiscent of the Great Plains than the Sonoran Desert. This is a land of ghost-town tours, day-long horseback rides, bird watching, hiking, biking, wine tasting and so much more. The 24th Annual Patagonia Fall Festival, Oct. 12–14, is known as the best small-town celebration in Arizona (patagoniaaz.com and patagoniafallfestival.com). More things to do in the Patagonia area are: Take a ghost town tour (southernarizonaguide.com/ghosttowns-southern-arizona), go horseback riding (horsebackexperience.com) and visit Patagonia State Park (azstateparks.com/Parks/PALA). The crown jewel for hiking/biking/ horseback riding in southeastern Arizona is on the Sky Island that is home to the Chiricahua National Monument. Seventeen miles of hiking trails and an eight mile scenic driving route wind through this land of Seusslike balance rocks—perfect for taking in the fall colors of the seven species of oak tree within the monument (nps. gov/chir). Willcox, a small town but a great base camp for visiting the many nearby attractions. Apple Annie’s, one of the great family-friendly farms of Arizona, is just 10 miles outside of town. In full autumn celebration, it operates every day in October (appleannies.com).
Other nearby attractions are Fort Bowie (nps.gov/fobo), the Rex Allen Museum (rexallenmuseum.org) and Amerind Museum (amerind.org). The attractions in and near Tucson could fill more than a couple autumn weekends. Fall in lovely Sabino Canyon (parentseyes.arizona.edu/ sabino) is even more sensational, and visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (desertmuseum.org) in the cool of October is magnificent. So many other things are in the Tucson region, but a few are: Tohono Chul Park (tohonochulpark.org), Reid Park Zoo (reidparkzoo.org), Ted DeGrazia’s Gallery of the Sun (degrazia.org), Presidio Turquoise Trail (visittucson.org/includes/media/docs/ DowntownTour.pdf), and the Arizona State Museum (statemuseum.arizona. edu). San Xavier del Bac (patronatosanxavier.org) is a beautiful Spanish mission. Colossal Cave Mountain Park (colossalcave.com), Saguaro National Park (nps.gov/sagu) and the International Wildlife Museum (thewildlifemuseum.org) are but a few selections from which to choose. The top fall festival along the I-19 Corridor happens at Tubac Presidio State Park (azstateparks.com/Parks/ TUPR) on Saturday, Oct. 19. De Anza Days commemorates the 1775 journey of Spanish Conquistador Juan Bautista de Anza’s journey from Tubac to the San Francisco Bay area. Travel 4.5 miles down I-19 to Tumacacori National Historic Park. (nps.gov/tuma) The De Anza Trail runs along the Santa Cruz River connecting the Mission of Tumacacori with the Tubac Presidio. in this riparian environment dress in full autumn colors during mid-October for anyone who wishes to walk in the footsteps of the early Spanish soldiers, explorers and priests. Also nearby is the Titan Missile Museum (titanmissilemuseum.org). The towns of Tombstone and Bisbee refused to die when the 1880–1930 mining boom in this region went bust. The 84th annual Helldorado Days of Tombstone (Friday through Sunday, Oct. 18–20), and the 132nd anniversary of the Gunfight at the OK Corral (Saturday, Oct. 26) commemorate the fighting spirit. Both events will be decorated with the natural colors of the season (helldoradodays.com). Lovely Bisbee, nestled in a canyon of the Mule Mountains, was known
as “Queen of the Copper Camps.” There is never a bad time to visit Bisbee, but the cool nights and autumn splendor of the Bisbee canyon make an October night or two at the Copper Queen Hotel or the Shady Dell just perfect. On Saturday, Oct. 19, the 23rd Annual Bisbee 1,000 Great Stair Climb (bisbee1000.org) challenges the ambitious to the most unique and challenging 5K run in America (discoverbisbee.com). Men and women from around the world made a lot of history by gathering in this corner of Arizona. The amazing stories of their lives await your autumn visit. io

ost of us only speed through southwestern Arizona on our way to the cool and sandy beaches of California. And though towns are small and far between, there are still many places worth a stop. Fall colors come late to these desert areas but cooler temps make for an ideal road trip. Yuma! Get off the freeway and explore this old Colorado River town. Mother Nature created a large outcropping of granite on either side of the river that has always held strong against the once swift flow of the Colorado, and provided an easier

way for the Yuman Indians and early European explorers to cross the mighty river. The Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park preserves artifacts from five centuries of interaction with the river. Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park—once the infamous 1880s Arizona Territorial prison— provides a quick understanding of why assignment to this prison was once the worst experience in the Arizona Territory. Thirteen museums (yumazone.com/ museums.htm) in and around Yuma preserve the military history, mining history, natural history and Native American history of this, one of the
oldest towns in Arizona (visityuma. com). Also in the area: Dateland’s World Famous Date Shakes (sweets. seriouseats.com/2010/03/world-famousdate-shakes-in-dateland-arizona.html), the Imperial Sand Dunes National Recreation Area, CA (visityuma.com/ sand_dunes) and St. Thomas Indian Mission, CA (missiontrailtoday.com/ code/mission_colorador.htm). One of the great autumn road trips in southwestern Arizona involves meeting a fisherman… the Bouse Fisherman, that is. The Bouse Fisherman is an intaglio (in-‘tal-yo) off AZ-95 about six miles north of Quartzsite, with a GPS reading of N33.4745 W114.0557. Also called a geoglyphs, intaglios are unusually large geometric designs, or animal or human figures created on the desert floor by early people. The most famous intaglios are the Nazca Lines on a high plateau of Peru.
This ancient Bouse Fisherman may have been carved into the desert some 2,000 years ago, and is thought to be of the god Kusmastamo about to thrust his spear into the earth to create the Colorado River. One of many intaglios in the area, the fisherman is the only known intaglio in Arizona. Others can be found on the California side of the Colorado River, 15 miles north of Blythe, CA. (azoutback.com/bouse.htm). As you pass through Bouse, be sure to check out the display of World War II tanks and trucks along AZ-72. General Patton trained with his first Armored Division here before the invasion of North Africa. While touring the area, be sure to see Hi Jolly’s Tomb in Quartzsite (roadsideamerica.com/story/11284), Palm Canyon Trail, Kofa National Wildlife Refuge (americansouthwest. net/arizona/kofa/wildlife_refuge.html)

and Swansea Ghost Town (azoutback. com/SwanseaAZ.htm). Before you get to Bouse, stop in Wickenburg, Anthem’s nearby neighbor. The fall migration of birds has begun, so stop by to check out which feathered friends are hanging out at the Hassayampa River Preserve. If you like easy hikes along a flowing river and the sound of cottonwood leaves crunching underfoot, hike the riparian pathway of this wonderful preserve (gosw.about. com/od/bestsightstosee/a/hassayampa. htm). Autumn leaves fall from the “hanging tree” at Vulture Gold Mine, some 12 miles south of Wickenburg. An easy hike to this historic mine and the adjoining ghost town of Vulture City provides plenty of photographic opportunities (vultureminetours.com). Wickenburg, long known for its extraordinary dude ranches and cowboy
way of life, offers trail rides to take in the autumn beauty. We recommend the wranglers from Cowboy Way Adventures which open for the season with classic Wickenburg trail rides Friday, Nov. 1 (cowboywayadventures.com). And, don’t miss that famous, 60-ton, green frog aptly named Rocky, perched just north of Wickenburg, along AZ-89 (azbugztwo.blogspot.com/2013/02/ rocky-arizonas-green-frog.html). Other nearby attractions are the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, Henry Wickenburg’s Grave Site(findagrave. com) and Chaparral Homemade Ice Cream (chaparral-icecream.com) for a cool treat. Even though this part of Arizona may not be a tapestry of autumn colors, there still are plenty of fall road trips to take. Where else could you meet an ancient fisherman and a giant frog while enjoying some great homemade ice cream? io
