Living In Anthem & Loving It!

kelly Green? Deduct $3,000! Dear Doreen, I’m making an offer on a house outside of anthem that I frankly love. However, the taste of the present owners is “in their mouth.” I will have to change the flooring, paint the whole house and put in a pool. I offered less than list price since I will have to spend so much after I move in. They were offended and flat rejected my offer. My agent said the asking price is comparable to what is selling in that neighborhood and I should reconsider. I so love this house… but you should see the shade of green! —Champagne Taste

Dear Champagne taste, In my long career representing buyers and sellers, I know we all have different design tastes. Why are you punishing the seller for his or hers? If the house is priced to market, naturally you offended them with a low-ball offer that was based on your personal redesign costs. You want different tile, different paint and you want a pool. They did not want a pool and liked their tile and paint. Get over it! Buy the house you love, pay a fair price, and do what you want once you move in. —Doreen

ey, do you miss those Sunday strolls through the park with your family, neighbors and friends while local farmers, ranchers and entrepreneurs proudly displayed their products? Get ready; it’s on its way back. Beginning Sunday, Oct. 6 (yes, for logistical reasons, it remains a Sunday affair), Arizona Community Farmers Markets brings an Indian Summer market to the park with about 30 to 40 vendors from 8 a.m. to noon. The full market returns Sunday, Nov. 3 with 60 to 70 vendors, said Dee Logan,

spokesperson for Arizona Community Farmers Markets. “Later in the season will be better for our growers who are struggling with the heat here in the Valley… We do have some folks who are coming down from the north who can make the late summer market. So, it’s an experiment to see how this goes,” Logan said. Can’t wait? Crooked Sky Farms now delivers to the Anthem area every Wednesday. At $20 per week with a three-month prepaid subscription (or $25 each week without a commitment),

Crooked Sky packs a variety of locally grown, in-season freshly harvested produce. Your share would contain eight portions, or enough to feed a couple or small family, according to Crooked Sky. Crops grown on Crooked Sky Farms are CNG (Certified Naturally Grown; without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or GMO seeds). CNG is independent from the National Organic Program and provides smaller farmers an alternative to the expense of certified organic labeling.

Anthem resident Maureen Sollars contacted Crooked Sky Farms to begin the CSA in Anthem when she decided she needed to limit chemicals for her family. “I called several farms to see about starting one. Crooked Sky really held my hand. They’ve been dying to get into Anthem.” To make it worth the trip, Crooked Sky Farms needs at least 20 participants per week. FENCE

Ahh…

T he Beginning of the Rest of the Year

By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com

A

Seattle-like weekend finally brought temperatures crashing into the high 90s. Autumn(ish) is finally here. I’ve officially survived my 14th Arizona summer, which qualifies me for the moniker of “semi-native” or “strip of bacon,” I’m not quite sure which. It seems that, as the seasons roll by, I’ve developed a unique coping mechanism that falls somewhere between Kübler-Ross’ “Five Stages of Grief” and Dante’s “Nine Circles of Hell.” I like to call it Prickett’s “Seven Months of Mirage.”

March “It typically isn’t this

warm in March. You know what that means? An unseasonably cool April.”

April “This is so much better

than all the rain we had last year. Woo-hoo, an extra month of swim time! One hundred and five tomorrow? That won’t last.”

May “Well, at least school

will be out soon. We’ll take a few trips up north. The electric bill is what? No, I just find cold showers invigorating, why do you ask?”

June “Hey, it’s a ‘dry heat.’

I hear they’re still in the 60s back East. I sure don’t miss that. Honey, you’re sitting a little too close… Can I get a little room here? One hundred and fifteen tomorrow? That won’t last.”

July “Give me a freaking

break! I blistered my thighs just looking at a pair of corduroys. My nostril hairs are spontaneously

combusting when I inhale. They say it’s monsoon season; Where’s the #@&%* rain? I hear Mesa got a ton. They get the rain and all we get is dust! No, we can’t go to Flagstaff, the car battery died again.”

August “When will this

monsoon season end? One hundred and nineteen with 90 percent humidity is just not fair. I’m not crying, I’m sweating. OK, maybe a little of both. I’d take a cold shower, but the water comes out of the tap at 250 degrees Kelvin.”

September “Ah, the

temperatures have finally crashed into the high 90s. You know what that means? Eight to nine months of perfect weather! See, this is why we moved here in the first place... You know, I hear they’re already in the 60s back East.” io THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013 |

Fall Means Even the Lawns Turn Color

IN&OUT STAFF PHOTO

By Nadine Shaalan nshaalan@anthemnews.com

V

alleyCrest Landscape began the monstrous task of overseeding the grassy areas of Anthem’s community park last week, so gird yourself for expansive patches of unsightly and inaccessible brown for a couple weeks, as crews rush to recreate the lush swaths of green in time for Autumnfest Oct. 26 and 27.

While ValleyCrest is tied to a tighter schedule, homeowners should begin thinking about overseeding now. The optimal time is when nighttime temps dip below 65 degrees, usually late September, early October. About two weeks prior, you’ll want to cut irrigation time in half.

OVERSEEDING SHOPPING LIST Perennial Rye Seed If you see annual rye, don’t buy it. The perennial rye is more heat tolerant, will last longer into the spring and has a richer, dark green color. Buy 15 pounds for every 1,000 square feet of lawn. Although you do not want to go crazy spreading the seed, it is better to err on the generous side; Some will blow away, some will be eaten by birds and some will not germinate. Topsoil A topsoil/compost mixture is best. Topsoil helps keep the seeds damp, essential for germination. Buy one bag for each 100 to 150 square feet. Don’t use steer manure; while it works well as a top cover, the high salt content can burn your newly germinated lawn, particularly if the temps are still high. Starter Fertilizer This specially formulated fertilizer helps new grass establish a strong root system. And, get a hand spreader if you don’t already have one. io 24

IN&OUT

| THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013

How to Get the Green 1. Scalp your lawn

Mow once at the regular setting. Now drop the mowing height to the lowest setting. If after several mowings your Bermuda still seems dense, dethatch gently with a rake. Raking aggressively can damage the roots. The lawn should now be short enough for the rye seed to easily fall between the Bermuda to the soil which is required for proper germination. But don’t get the seed out yet.

2. Fertilize

Use a hand-spreader or broadcast spreader to distribute the starter fertilizer.

3. Spread the Seed

Using a spreader, throw half of the seed while crossing north/south and the other half while crossing east/west to ensure even spreading.

4. Cover with Topsoil

Shake the bag evenly over the new seed, using one bag for every 100 to 150 square feet.

Arizona Heights

Dentistry Smiles Ahead of the Rest

Keep kids and pets off your lawn until the grass is established. Keeping birds away is a bit more difficult. Try attaching iridescent tape to the end of stakes set around your lawn. They’ll catch the breeze and help keep the skittish birds away.

5. Adjust your Watering

Set your irrigation to come on every two hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Water long enough to wet the ground but not puddle. Continue until the seeds sprout, typically 10 to 14 days. Drop the watering down to once a day for several weeks, then every three to four days once the lawn is established. Remember to water mid-day during winter as nighttime temps can drop into the 40s or lower.

Working Moms Are Manic… By Nadine Shaalan nshaalan@anthemnews.com

…T

hey have to be to handle the frenetic pace of a day that includes making and cleaning up after meals, school drop-off and pick-up, a nail-biting rush-hour commute, kids’ homework and a full eighthour workday. Adding to the burn, after-school programs tend to end the moment your shift ends making it impossible for you to avoid merciless late fees tallied by the minute; A recipe for dangerous driving, unhealthy coping mechanisms, and other stress-related consequences.

Stop the madness! That’s what

Robin Stewart set out to do when she

Xander Stewart, Mark Trujillo, Brianne Keenan and Dylan Stewart enjoy the bounce house at Mad Mamas.

created Mad Mamas Bounce Mania. It’s a concept she developed when her husband’s job shipped him abroad for a year, and she discovered the hysteria of being a single parent with three young kids. “As a working professional, I was living in a very tight time box. I had to drop the kids off at a certain time, drive 30 miles to work, and pick them up by a certain time. Not having flexibility in my schedule was actually impacting my career, I was taking work home and doing it late into the night after the kids went to bed,” said Stewart. But before putting the kids to bed, she had to make sure homework got done. By this time, mom and the kids were tired, and getting through homework was less than harmonious. Finished Your Homework? Bounce!

Mark Trujillo concentrates on his homework before heading for some fun. Stewart detailed what she felt a really good after-school program needed: 1. Active kids. No TV. No video games. 2. Homework prioritized. 3. Late pick-up at a reasonable rate. 4. Nutritious snacks.

Work First Homework is hard for

kids and working parents. Stewart calls the Mad Mamas Homework Club the “crown jewel” of Mad Mamas. “We keep track of your homework however your teacher assigns it, be it by website, handout or syllabus. We bring the kids into the computer lab and go over what they are going to get done today. We sit them down at computers right off the bat to practice their spelling words, and we work through their task list with them. We check their work for completeness, and when reasonable—like with a math sheet— for correctness. We send emails to the parents about what was accomplished and what still needs attention at home,” said Stewart. (Working parents, are you tearing up yet?)

The center features bounce houses, basketball, four square, ping pong and air hockey for plenty of unstructured play— something research has shown to be critical during a child’s day, even while schools continue to squeeze it out of the curriculum. A reading room and a music lab give kids alternatives to physical play. “There is an electronic piano in our music lab… We have a piano teacher available and the use of the equipment is free,” Stewart said “We also have a violin, but we are still looking for a teacher.”

No sugar? Sweet! “At first

we were only serving fruits and vegetables, but the kids were so active, they were always hungry, so we added some carbs such as pretzels, popcorn and cheese,” said Stewart. “We offer no sugar at all.”

Pain-free Pickup A van makes the

rounds to pick up kids after school. Then parents can pick up from Mad Mamas as late as 6:30 p.m. at no extra charge and as late as 7 p.m. for a flat fee. Imagine starting the evening with most of the homework out of the way, a good dose of playtime under the belt, and the wallet no lighter than expected. Mama, you might find a little sanity after all. io Mad Mamas 42302 N. Vision Way Anthem 623-866-5867 AnthemBounce.com THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013 |

Roundabout or Runaround?

The roundabout at Happy Valley Road and I-17 causes some drivers dread while bringing ADOT some comfort. By Brad Wood bwood@anthemnews.com

T

hey look so orderly on the pages of travel magazines. Or, when you receive a postcard from someone touring abroad. Cars politely finding their place as they cruise around the roundabout. In the center, ornate sculptures or figures spraying water lazily into the air. The image of motoring paradise. In reality, navigating roundabouts (such as the one at Happy Valley Road and I-17) can be a counter-clockwise delve into anything but paradise. The only measure of order is the patience, or lack thereof, of the driver next to enter the vortex of vehicles. As long as vehicle speed is reasonable and spacing is correct, the roundabout works well. But, when a driver makes a roundabout their personal skid-pad test oval, or when a too-timid driver seemingly never finds a gap large enough, the “spirit” of the roundabout more or less

becomes an automotive cage fight. So, for more Happy Valley-bound drivers, Jomax is the new jumping-off point from the north and Pinnacle Peak from the south—All in an effort to avoid those roundabouts. Rod Garlock, for instance, avoids the roundabout and is not shy about sharing. “It’s a pain. A total pain,” said Garlock. “Anytime, especially commute time or weekends, it’s difficult to even get in.”

Why a Roundabout?

All Tied Up… But Safer

As in any road/ highway project, the considerations to be made well before any dirt is moved are many. Aside from the engineering aspects, there is much consulting with local communities and the general public.

The City of Phoenix recommended the use of roundabouts to ADOT as far back as the 1990s. ADOT spent years studying the traffic calming device in other states. After careful analysis, the Happy Valley roundabouts opened to traffic in 2001, according to ADOT’s Doug Nintzel. The thinking behind the Happy Valley decision was clear. Nintzel said a traditional freeway interchange option would have been too costly. “Without enough funding to overhaul the Happy Valley interchange, including building a wider bridge over the freeway, regional planners and the city supported a design that included the roundabouts on each end of the existing two-lane bridge.”

Roundabout Advice… A little strategy that can be used when you are on final approach: • Slow down and cooperate with other drivers. • Yield to other traffic already in the roundabout. • Know what lane is going to work best depending on where you are going. • Be patient.

And yet, without any light to control traffic, it can seem as if you’ll never get your turn at the roundabout. “Drivers are reluctant to go with the flow,” said Garlock. “When there is sufficient opening, they will wait and wait, and you’re eight to 10 cars deep on the ramp.” There is a bright side. You will get through and at less risk of a deadly crash. “You can’t prevent all crashes, but one of the positive benefits of roundabouts is that they significantly reduce the chances of a serious T-bone crash,” Nintzel said. According to ADOT, one study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showed that roundabouts reduce injury crashes by 75 percent, and fatal and incapacitating injury crashes by 90 percent when compared to signalized intersections.

While there is no hard data regarding the crash rate at Happy Valley specifically, ADOT sees no red flags. “We haven’t seen any safety concerns Essentially, the roundabouts were develop in the more than 10 years that designed to manage the flow of multilane traffic across the current single-lane the roundabouts have been in use,” Nintzel said. bridge. 32

More to Come

It’s not a question of if there will be more roundabouts, but when and how many. And, the where question is most interesting. Look for roundabouts to sprout up in more rural areas where community support is more likely and the design makes good sense, Nintzel said. “I wouldn’t look for roundabouts to be used at urban freeway locations. So far it’s been limited, with Happy Valley Road at I-17 being the exception rather than the rule,” he said.

Roundabout Reaction

From a cost and safety standpoint, ADOT is satisfied with roundabout results. And, they do keep traffic moving. But Nintzel is aware drivers give them mixed reviews. “Some folks swear by them, while others swear at them.” If you feel the expletives rising as you approach a roundabout, here’s a tip: Just imagine you are in one of those pictures from the travel magazine, calmly motoring about the roundabout in some foreign land on your way to a café on the square. Take a deep breath. Exhale. Repeat. Be safe out there. io THE

arly on an overcast Sunday, an unlikely clattering echoes from behind the Anthem skate park. A dozen scrappy men and boys slap hockey sticks at a puck slipping on what most of us thought was an unused concrete rink. The play is energetic and good-natured, and the guys range in age from about 15 to 50. Anthem Street Hockey League organizer Wajeh Khan said the group has been at it for about eight years. There are some 25 names on the email list and about 15 regulars, Khan said.

More Than a Game

The multi-generational gathering

seemed to give the players more than just a great workout. Older players encouraged the younger ones, players in the box chatted about the best type of shin guards. Others shared health concerns: “I’m at my pre-divorce weight. I’m getting too comfortable.” Players meet at the rink every other Sunday at 7 a.m. “We go through the summer, too,” said Khan. “So, that’s quite the adventure… going at 110, 115 [degrees].” Newcomers are welcome—all you need is a stick and some gloves. “That’s it,” said Khan. “…And some good lungs.” io

Braciole. It’s Kind of a Big Deal.

Feel free to improvise with the ingredients to your taste.

latten. Stuff. Roll. Tie. Sear. Simmer. These six words, independently, are verbs that make me so happy, but when this combination of words is in this particular order, my jowls start to spasm. I’m not kidding. As I pen these words, I feel pain—a good pain—rising in my cheeks. Flatten. Stuff. Roll. Tie. Sear. Simmer. Sorry, I had to repeat them one more time; they’re so catchy! If I were an Italian rapper, I would put those words in my refrain and sky-rocket to stardom! In my mind, these words primarily pertain to braciole. That’s “brah-shzoleh.” When I say braciole, everyone listens. ATCH LARRY MAKE THIS RECIPE AT W CookEatSleep.com

Why? Well, it’s fun to say, it’s a special occasion dish and there are countless variations. Braciole is also one of the star components in the Sunday meat sauce. In addition, braciole is crafted from an inexpensive cut of meat that is transformed into something spectacular. Sometimes I make beef braciole, sometimes I make pork braciole. When I’m looking to overachieve, I make both. Some of my favorite stuffing stars are: prosciutto, soppressata, pancetta, pork sausage, bresaola, garlic, parsley, bread crumbs, provolone cheese, asiago cheese and mozzarella. I could easily name another 20 ingredients. I’m no mathematician, but I think the pork, the beef and the array of potential stuffing ingredients add up to more than 1 billion recipes. That’s a lot of braciole! Once you master the “flatten, stuff, roll, tie, sear,” where you do your simmering is your business. I most often simmer my braciole in my Sunday Meat Sauce, but that’s a huge five-to-six hour commitment. For today’s recipe, and for time’s sake, the simmer is going to take place in a wine, chicken broth, mushroom and onion Jacuzzi. Ciao, Bella!

io

Where you simmer—in brown gravy or red sauce—is your business.

Beef Braciole 6–8 slices top round beef, flattened ½ cup fresh parsley, chopped 3 garlic cloves, chopped ¼ cup pecorino romano cheese 6–8 slices prosciutto, thin 1 cup of asiago cheese, shredded 4 tbsp. plain bread crumbs Salt and black pepper to taste Olive oil 1 onion, diced 8 oz. mushrooms, sliced 1 cup white wine 2 cups chicken broth Directions

1 Lay the beef slices flat and salt and pepper them. Place one slice of prosciutto on each slice of beef. Then mix parsley, garlic, pecorino, asiago, 3 tbsp. olive oil and bread crumbs. Distribute mix evenly over beef slices. Drizzle with a touch of olive oil. 2 Firmly roll. Tie with twine at one end and continue to the other end (usually four ties; don’t use toothpicks). 3 Heat sauté pan on high with some olive oil. Sear braciole on all sides and remove. Lower the heat, add onions and sauté for one minute, then deglaze the pan with the white wine. Loosen all the bits and pieces from the bottom of the pan. Add mushrooms and chicken broth and bring to a boil. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to a simmer, add the braciole back to the pan and cover. Turn braciole every 15 minutes, for one hour or until fork tender. Add more chicken broth as necessary.

Larry’s Tip Serve braciole sliced over polenta. Instead of cooking on stove top, bake covered at 350 degrees for an hour and a half. Serves 6 to 8 THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013 |
