rates rise… Prices Fall? Dear Doreen, I believe this is a very bad time to buy a house. I think prices will begin to fall again in a few months. Interest rates on loans are going up. Buyers will back off. Sellers will become desperate and lower their prices. Don’t you agree? —Holding Out Dear Holding out, Here’s the problem: You may be waiting (possibly in vain) for prices to fall again. You can’t predict when the market will hit bottom. as I’ve mentioned in the past, my crystal ball has clouded over. What if prices do fall? another buyer could snap up
your favorite house. You must decide whether you will actively look, then negotiate a fair deal, or if you’ll just passively browse houses, hoping to stumble on a house you like when the market is coincidentally bottomed out (which can’t be identified until after it has happened). If you find the right house at the right price, buy it. Get a good buyer’s agent that knows the areas you are looking in, make sure that agent can negotiate effectively and go for it! Call us, we can help. Many times we can offer you a house that hasn’t been listed yet, and being the first buyer may get you the deal you want. —Doreen

Sally Grimes was profiled in the May 19, 2011 issue of In&Out. Remarkable for her friendly customer service and her daily trike trek up Anthem Way, Sally reportedly has been struggling with an injured knee.
good deed for Sally [the woman who works at Walgreens who rides her three-wheeler to work.] She is the one that always calls everyone “Sweetie” when they come in. Sally injured her knee and was not able to ride her bike to and from work. Connie Noble, a customer at Walgreens, has graciously been picking her up at [Bela Rosa] apartments at 6 a.m. and bringing her to Walgreens, then picking Sally up at 3 p.m. and driving her home. Connie is not related to Sally, but she has been doing this for a week now, while [Sally’s] knee is recovering. Anyway, it inspired me to to do something good for a complete stranger, too. If more people felt this way, there would be more love going around in Anthem to our neighbors.

The results are in: According to a statewide assessment, more students that attended prekindergarten at KinderCa KinderCare tested fully ready for kindergarten than their non-KinderCare classmates.* pe A higher percentage of KinderCare children ranked as top performers in Language/Literacy (14% more), Mathematical Thinking (18% more), and Scientific Thinking (11% more). With a curriculum that targets what children need to succeed in school and beyond, you’ll see how it all adds up to one amazing child — yours. A 2010 Johns Hopkins University study indicated kindergarteners who were “fully ready” for school showed higher achievement on the 3rd grade Maryland School Assessment (MSA).
*Percentages reflect children who attended a full-time prekindergarten program at KinderCare learning centers for more than a year who went to kindergarten in Maryland. More children attending KinderCare learning centers in Maryland tested fully ready than their non-KinderCare classmates. Children who attended KinderCare learning centers less than full-time and less than a year still tested fully ready at a higher rate than their non-KinderCare classmates in Maryland.

Why Your Child’s Identity Looks So Good to Thieves

By Brad Wood bwood@anthemnews.com

n the dark corners of cyberspace, a familiar risk lurks: thieves trolling for enough of your personal information to make a virtual “you.” Then they go shopping, get jobs and loans and credit cards, and commit crimes— all in your good name. While most of us are conscious of this threat, many of us don’t give thought to the fact crooks are also targeting our kids. According to Carnegie Mellon University’s CyLAb, more than 10 percent of children in a recent study had someone else using their Social Security numbers (SSNs)—the information most commonly used by identity thieves targeting children. “Children’s SSNs can be attractive to identity thieves because the SSNs can be misused for a number of reasons such as employment, to create credit, open utility accounts, get medical treatment, and file tax

Despite this dread-inducing clause, experts agree you should ask whether you are under legal obligation before providing your child’s social security number. If you must provide the number, ask who will have access and how it will be stored. for example in monthly credit card statements, children and their parents likely will not discover the damage until the child applies for a driver’s license, a job or college admission. Crooks are less likely to get caught using a young child’s ID, and if they get that ID at an early age, they can abuse credit that much longer.
History of Child Identity Fraud
In 1992, the Social Security Administration (SSA) began matching birth dates to SSNs to determine whether earnings reported by employers (and self-employers) belonged to children. If the birth date indicated the earner was under age 7, earnings were suspended and investigated and, when verified, reinstated. Audits of the suspended earnings revealed 65 percent of funds reported by children under 7 were related to potential SSN misuse. When an identity thief uses a different date of birth with the stolen
SSN, clearing the child’s credit becomes even more complicated. The credit bureaus may have only the thief’s date of birth on file, and the burden of proof becomes yours.
Not an Easy Fix
Melody, an Anthem resident who spoke on condition of anonymity, told In&Out she discovered her son was a victim of fraud. He was 16 years old when she took him to apply for a debit card. They found his number had been used to apply for a car loan. And a home loan. He was ostensibly 6 years old when he made these big purchases, Melody said. “It took us forever. We had to write letters saying the use of the Social Security number was fraudulent,” said Melody. “We had to write the credit agencies saying he was too young and it was obvious he didn’t apply for these loans. It was a good thing we did it when he was 16 instead of 18 because he had to get student loans.” THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2013 |

CURRENTS » COMMUNITY Melody has advice for parents: Get a free credit report for your children every 2–3 years. And, she said, “Unless it’s something you absolutely have to have the Social Security number for, don’t ever use it. Don’t ever put it down anywhere.”
Who are These ID Thieves? The crooks come from a wide swath of backgrounds. According to Experian, those tapping into children’s Social Security numbers include undocumented workers who need an identity to keep working in the United States and organized crime rings engaging in financial fraud.
Also among the guilty, friends and family members of the victim who want to circumvent their bad-credit.
Consequences A low credit rating is only one consequence a victim of ID theft will face as they step into adulthood. A young person can be denied a loan, apartment rental or a credit card because of a criminal record created by the identity thief. A criminal history and falsified income can result in being denied college admission, financial aid and a job—especially if there are outstanding warrants. io

Back to School…
What to do with all that “me time” By Chris Prickett cprickett@anthemnews.com
M
y summer schedule was peppered with almost daily bouts of “sniff and search” for rotting food under the couch, or providing 11:30 a.m. wakeup service, but by the second week of August, my schedule has suddenly cleared. Phew! Time to assess the damage and get on with the honey-dos. Last week, I tackled the drip system. Take a zone at a time and run it through a cycle. Check to see if the drips are dripping, the sprinkler heads aren’t over spraying, and look for any damp areas or puddles that could indicate a leak. Learn from my mistake and wear a long-sleeve shirt and gloves when you hunt for those drip lines. They have a tendency to hide in very scratchy places; my arms and hands look like I got the short end of a bobcat wrestling contest. Take an hour or two to do some maintenance on the windows. I suggest doing this in the early morning
so you’re not air conditioning the whole dang neighborhood. Use your vacuum cleaner crevice tool and an old toothbrush (or one belonging to the kid who annoyed you most) to clear the dust, bug carcasses and cobwebs from the track. Make sure you clear out the small weep holes on the bottom exterior of the frame. These let water drain out during the heavy rains. If you notice water stains on the window sill, the weep holes are likely clogged. Once it’s nice and clean, spray a dry silicone lubricant (never WD-40 or oil). This extra “me time” might also give you a chance to move the furniture around and clean inside and under it. I’m sure this will be a most magical time of discovery if your kids are anything like mine. I found a treasure trove of lost silverware, battery covers to TV remotes, four flavors of petrified Doritos, three bucks in change (mostly pennies), and a fat and happy hamster we lost sometime in June. io THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2013 |

Find Ticks
Try to do this daily. In Arizona, ticks are active all year. According to the Humane Society, even the best repellents are no guarantee against the blood-sucking critters.
1
TICKED
OFF!
Run your fingers slowly over your dog’s entire body feeling for bumps or swollen areas.
2
Check between toes, under armpits, inside ears, and around face and chin.
3
Ticks can enter your house on your pet, then find a new host in another pet or human. Be sure to check all your family members especially after outdoor activities in the wash or in grassy areas.
Yes, there are ticks in the Anthem area‌ Quite a few, in fact, and they come bearing potentially dangerous diseases.
4
Look for tiny black, brown or tan bugs. Ticks are arachnids, not insects and, like their spider relatives, they have eight legs. They can be as tiny as a pin head before they feed, but grow many times their size once they are engorged. SOURCE The Humane Society

his time of year, we see a lot of insects, bugs and spiders running around. One of the most overlooked yet dangerous of them is the tick. There are more than 25 different species of ticks crawling around Arizona and many of them are found right here in the Anthem area. The brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sangiuneus) is the most common and can carry

many diseases that are potentially dangerous to both you and your pet.
Sneaky Bugs
A common misconception about ticks is that they are easy to spot in your house or on your pet. But because ticks can live for long periods without feeding, they can hide out undetected in crevices around the house and yard. While the
lifespan of the brown dog tick is about two years, it only spends two to three weeks of its life feeding. A tick must be attached for 24- to-48 hours before it can spread disease, so it is important to check your pet regularly. If you find a tick, remove it as quickly as possible. Grasp the tick with tweezers as close to the skin as possible and pull straight up. Apply a dab of alcohol to the spot after removal. It is common for dogs to develop a small bump or scab at the site which may last two to three weeks. (If you are concerned about removing a tick yourself, the staff at Daisy Mountain Veterinary Hospital is more than happy to do it for you.)
The Dangers
The most common tick-borne disease seen in dogs in this area is Ehrlichia canis. This bacteria is transmitted to the pet through the saliva of the tick as it feeds. Most tick-borne diseases in dogs will cause one or more of the following symptoms: lethargy (lack of energy), depression, decreased appetite, weight loss, fever, spontaneous bleeding (especially
nosebleeds), bruising on the abdomen and stiff joints or lameness (limping). The dog could be infected for weeks or months before symptoms become evident, so get to your veterinarian’s office quickly once you detect symptoms. A blood test will confirm, and treatment is simple if caught early. There is a great website that provides an interactive map that allows you to see which diseases are present in your area as well as areas to which you may be traveling. It can be found at dogsandticks. com/diseases_in_your_ area.php If you have seen ticks on your pet or in your house, eradication can be difficult and requires long-term, consistent tick protection for all pets in the household. Several good topical products on the market protect against ticks. Contact your veterinarian to pick up an appropriate product. Most pest control companies have products that will kill ticks in the environment, as well. io Dr. Kirstin Young is a doctor of veterinary medicine at Daisy Mountain Veterinary Hospital. Send your pet-related questions to vet@anthemnews.com.
Lose Ticks
Take a deep breath. Finding a tick attached to a pet or person can be disturbing. But removal and treatment is straightforward. Supplies Needed • Pair of gloves • Clean tweezers • Antiseptic • Rubbing alcohol
1
While wearing gloves, grasp the tick with tweezers as close to the skin as possible without pinching the skin.
2
Pull straight out in a slow, steady motion—don’t yank. Avoid leaving any part of the tick behind.
3
Save the tick in a small container with rubbing alcohol for the vet. This will help your vet with treatment if your dog begins showing symptoms of illness later.
4
Clean the affected area with antiseptic. Clean tweezers with rubbing alcohol. Dispose of gloves and wash hands.
5
Over the next days and weeks, keep an eye on your pet and the affected area. Make an appointment with your vet (and bring the tick) if you notice… • The site is infected • Your pet has trouble getting around or is reluctant to move • Your pet has fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, loss of appetite or neurological problems SOURCE The Humane Society

Problem Child?

he spectre of childhood obesity and tooth decay may not motivate you to stop the pop, but the results of a new study on soda and children’s behavior should make you think again. Researchers from Columbia University, University of Vermont and Harvard were able to link soft drink consumption to aggression, attention problems and withdrawal behavior in young kids. The study, led by Shakira Suglia, ScD, included nearly 3,000 urban 5-year-olds whose mothers reported on their behavior, and on how many sodas they had during the day. Forty-three percent of the kids drank at least one serving of soda per day and 4 percent drank four or more. Analysis of the data showed as soda intake increased, so did the children’s aggression score. Increased aggression was detected with even one serving. Two or more servings were linked to withdrawal behaviors. And, according to the report published in the Journal of Pediatrics on Aug. 16, “Children who drank four or more soft drinks per day were more than twice as likely to destroy things belonging to others, get into fights and physically attack people.” Those who had four or more servings were also
more likely to display attention problems. Soft drink consumption has already been associated with aggression, depression and suicidal thoughts in adolescents, according to the

Soft drinks are highly processed and contain numerous ingredients making the exact nature of the link elusive for now. In the meantime, limiting or eliminating soda consumption may reduce behavioral problems in children. io SOURCE “Soft Drinks Consumption Is Associated with Behavior Problems in 5-Year-Olds,” Shakira F. With research linking nitrates to serious health problems, more consumers are looking for lunch meats without the added preservative.
J
ust one year ago, it was challenging to find nitrate-free products in local grocery stores. The additive sodium nitrate, used primarily to preserve color and prevent spoilage, has gotten a bad rap: It is known to cause cancer in animals, and according to a Harvard study, eating processed deli meats was associated with a 42 percent higher risk of heart disease and a 19 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes. No wonder more sandwich eaters are seeking preservative-free lunch meats. Now, local delis are catching up to that demand. So, next time you’re at the deli counter pondering the choices for school lunch or—your own lunch—consider asking for the nitrate-free choices. io
Nitrate-Conscious Deli Counters ALBERTSONS The Dietz and Watson line offers nitrate-free options in turkey, chicken, beef and ham. WALMART Sara Lee offers choices with no added nitrates in turkey, chicken and beef. FRY’S Select chicken, roast beef and turkey options in the Boar’s Head line have no nitrates added. SAFEWAY Primo Taglio panroasted turkey, pastrami and roast beef have no nitrates.
