Ashwagandha: a prime example
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root is an ancient medicinal herb renowned for its adaptogenic properties. The root of ashwagandha Withania somnifera has been a staple botanical of Ayurveda for thousands of years, earning the name 'the king of herbs.’ The name Ashwagandha is derived from Sanskrit and is a combination of the word Ashva meaning horse, and gandha meaning smell; the root has strong aroma that is described as “horse-like.” In Latin, the species name somnifera means “sleep inducer,” apparently alluding to the use of Ashwagandha as a sedative and as a nervine.
Ashwagandha's prominence in the men's health sector is no accident. This ancient herb, used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine, has found its way into modern health regimens due to its impressive
range of benefits. Various studies demonstrating Ashwagandha’s benefits to reducing stress, improving stamina, and testosterone, and boosting strength, and libido have been conducted, verifying thousands of years of traditional usage.
Men often face societal pressures to be the "breadwinners" or "protectors", roles that demand physical and mental well-being. Ashwagandha as an adaptogen has the ability to reduce stress and improve physical and mental well-being.
Research published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine examined the effects of KSM66 ashwagandha supplementation (600mg/day) for eight weeks and found remarkable results in the reduction of stress and subjective measures of stress - those in the KSM-66 group experienced a 28% reduction in cortisol levels. KSM-66 Ashwagandha root extract also produced a 44% reduction on the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and reduced depression, anxiety, and stress by more than 70% on the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS)2
In another study published in Cureus, researchers examined the effect of KSM-66 Ashwagandha root extract supplementation (600mg/day) resulted in a 38% decrease in Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), 32% reduction in serum cortisol, and a 16% reduction in anxiety measured through Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A)3

Research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition demonstrated that an 8-week supplementation with KSM-66 ashwagandha root extract (600mg total/day) improved muscle strength and size through resistance by increasing testosterone levels in the body by more than 15% and boosting strength by almost 75% in the upper body and 50% in the lower body. This study measured serum levels of creatine kinase, a protein specific to muscles that can be a muscle damage marker. KSM-66 ashwagandha root extract supplementation also reported a statistically significant decrease in exercise-induced muscle damage and a 3.5% decrease in the body5

Ashwagandha root extract has been shown to improve sexual desire, libido, and testosterone levels in men - all of which speak to the multi-factorial benefits the Ayurvedic wonder herb offers men. Additional insights into how KSM-66 Ashwagandha root extract supports men’s sexual health and fertility can be found in a landmark 2013 study appearing in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Low testosterone, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), erectile dysfunction (ED) are some of the most common men's health problems. While some supplements show promise in improving certain aspects of men's health, cautious use and consultation with healthcare providers are crucial due to limited scientific evidence.

Men's health is a field that focuses on health issues that are most relevant to men, including testosterone levels, testicular health, sperm quality and production, and prostate health. Some of the major conditions that fall under the umbrella of men's health include low testosterone (hypogonadism), sexual dysfunction, infertility, and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Low testosterone can have a range of negative effects, including reduced energy levels, depressed mood, difficulty concentrating, and decreased sex drive. BPH and prostate cancer can cause bothersome urinary symptoms, and prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide and a leading cause of cancer-related death in men. As such, maintaining healthy testosterone levels and
managing men's health conditions is important for both quality of life and longevity.
The prevalence of these conditions increases with age. For example, studies have shown that about 40% of men experience erectile dysfunction at age 40, increasing to about 70% by age 70. About half of men over 50 have evidence of BPH, which increases to over 80% in men over 70. Testosterone levels decrease by up to 2% per year after age 40. These statistics highlight the importance of addressing men's health concerns as men age.
BPH and nutraceuticals
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition where the prostate gland, which is part of the male reproductive system and located below the bladder,
becomes enlarged but not cancerous. This condition is very common in men over 50 years old, with about 50% of men in this age group showing evidence of BPH. The prevalence of BPH increases with age. As the prostate enlarges, the bladder wall thickens and may eventually weaken, leading to lower urinary tract symptoms. However, the correlation between prostate size and symptom severity is inconsistent, and some men with substantially enlarged prostates may experience few symptoms. It is important to note that the symptoms of BPH largely overlap with those of early prostate cancer: a frequent and urgent need to urinate, especially at night, trouble starting a urine stream, a weak or interrupted (i.e., stops and starts several times) urine stream, dribbling at the end of urination, incomplete urination
Patients using food supplements represent a patient population with a keen potential interest and/or adherence to healthy lifestyle changes. Some food supplements and active ingredients have been studied in order to prove their efficacy and safety.
Regardless, more attention should be directed toward heart-healthy lifestyle changes for most urologic men's health conditions, whether they are used in a preventive or synergistic setting with other acceptable clinical treatment options1
During the last decade, phytotherapeutic drugs have gained a more central role in BPH and LUTS management. In particular, clinical usage of the extract of the dried ripe fruit of Serenoa repens with a dosage of 320 mg per day, has shown its clinical efficacy and its superiority. The purpose of the following multicentric observational retrospective study was to evaluate all the urological aspects (clinical, biochemical, instrumental and pathological) of patients affected by BPH and LUTS, with a PSA < 10 ng/ml, a previous negative prostatic biopsy and in therapy with a daily dose of 320/640 mg of Serenoa repens
The study2 was conducted in 8 different centres. Data and information of 298 men with an average of 63 years (mean PSA of 5.4 ng/ml and mean prostate gland volume of 57 cc), affected by non-acute urinary symptoms caused by BPH, a dosed PSA level inferior to 10 ng/ml, a previous negative prostate biopsy and in therapy with Serenoa repens alone or associated to an alpha-blocker, were retrospectively inserted in an extensive on-line SIUrO Database (Societa Italiana di Urologia Oncologica; Italian Society of Oncological Urology).
Results were: PSA levels weren't subjected to an increase, revealing a stabilizing or downward trend. The percentage of patients with PSA below the level
of 4 ng/mL was lower at the end of the study. The overall changes in the uroflowmetry were similar and parallel both in the group with only Serenoa repens intake and in the group with Serenoa repens plus alpha-blocker. The mean medium flow and the mean maximum flow had a slight increase during the observation time. There was a substantial decrease in the number of patients presenting severe prostatic symptoms. Patients reported through the IIEF-5 score a sexual activity substantially unchanged after 6 months of follow-up. The Serenoa repens intake resulted in an improvement of the "inflammatory-like reports", in terms of ultrasound patterns, DRE and bioptical features.
Conclusion of the study was: Serenoa repens demonstrated its efficacy in reducing dysuria with minimal side effects. Further prospective studies might confirm its stabilization or lowering role on PSA levels in this cohort of patients and its possible clinical anti-inflammatory action2
Pygeum is an herbal supplement derived from the bark of the Prunus africana tree.
Pygeum is often sold as a prostate health supplement, specifically to alleviate benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Further research is needed to determine if pygeum does exert this protective effect. Though one meta-analysis showed pygeum supplementation provides overall benefits for BPH, subsequent studies suffered from poor design and did not provide strong evidence.
Pygeum has been shown to reduce BPH proliferation invitro(in a test tube) by interfering with growth factors. It also has an anti-androgenic effect on its receptor. Additional studies are needed to determine if this effect takes place inside the human body after oral supplementation.
A meta-analysis3 assessing 18 trials with a sample of 1562 (although only being able to quantify a minimal amount; 5 with a sample of 430) was able to find a reduction in reported symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia associated with variable doses of pygeum bark extract in the range of 19-23%.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability to achieve and/or maintain an appropriate penile erection that is sufficient for sexual intercourse and is clinically classified as psychogenic (such as relationship dissatisfaction, societal pressures, anxiety or depression) or organic (underlying causes or comorbidities). This is a common and increasing male sexual health concern, with a prevalence of up to 31% and projected to affect up to 322 million men by 2025. The prevalence of ED is reported as 1–10% of males aged <40 years (mostly psychogenic), >40% of men aged >40 years, and 50–100% of men aged >70 years (mostly organic).
Complementary and alternative medicines, including dietary supplements and herbal remedies, are increasingly being used for the treatment of ED, particularly through over-the-counter and internet
sources4-7.
The increased use of alternative medicines and herbal remedies for ED with limited scientific investigations on extractions, efficacy, safety and dosage is a challenge to clinicians, whereas a comprehensive overview of clinically relevant research in these disciplines is currently lacking. Therefore, the present study aimed to systematically review and discuss the current evidence from placebo-controlled clinical trials that investigated the use of traditional medicine and herbal remedies in the management of ED as assessed by the IIEF (The International Index of Erectile Function).
The conclusion of the study was that the reported use of alternative medicines and herbal remedies for ED is extensive, particularly through dietary supplements available on the market. However, there is limited research into specific treatments for the improvement of erectile function. There is also a significant amount of heterogeneity in the interventions investigated and the dosage and duration. Based on the present results, Panax ginseng , and pycnogenol have some promising evidence as herbal products, alongside L-arginine as a nutritional supplement. The mechanisms of action remain unclear, but each of these appears to increase NO synthesis and NO production to induce erection. Importantly, improved diet and exercise should be considered, particularly in patients with obesity or diabetes mellitus8
L-carnitine is a compound that is synthesized in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine. It is also found in food, particularly in meat products. Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) is an acetylated form of L-carnitine that can cross the bloodbrain barrier more efficiently. L-carnitine is known for its role in the mitochondrial oxidation of longchain fatty acids.
L-carnitine has been shown to be useful in the treatment of liver diseases. It can reduce ammonia levels and improve symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy, as well as improve various markers of liver function. High doses of L-carnitine supplementation have also been found to improve sperm quality, and a small number of studies have reported improvements in male fertility.

Many supplements promoted for ED and sexual enhancement have been found to be tainted with drug ingredients or related substances. Some products include combinations of multiple ingredients or excessively high doses, both of which can be dangerous. It is important to exercise caution when considering the use of supplements for ED.
Testosterone is a well-known androgen, or male sex hormone, that is produced by the testicles. It plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of secondary male characteristics, such as increased body and facial hair, a deepened voice, and increased muscle mass. When testosterone levels are low, due to a problem within the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular (HPT) axis, it can result in a condition known as hypogonadism.
Some common signs and symptoms of low testosterone include a decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, low sperm count, reduced muscle mass and strength, increased fat mass, low bone density, loss of body hair, enlargement of breast tissue (gynecomastia), sleep disturbances, reduced energy levels, depressed mood, and difficulty concentrating.
While many supplements are marketed as testosterone boosters, there is little evidence to suggest that they have any significant impact on testosterone levels. However, supplementing with certain nutrients such as vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium may slightly increase testosterone levels if dietary intake and serum levels are inadequate.
DHEA is a precursor to testosterone. As assigned males get older, their levels of testosterone gradually decline by 10% per decade after age 30. Through the use of DHEA supplements, many individuals aim to counter the effects of declining testosterone levels. Some evidence shows that DHEA increases libido and helps treat erectile dysfunction in men. DHEA can lead to improved libido as it may increase your free testosterone levels.
There appears to be an increase in testosterone following DHEA supplementation, but the vast majority of literature is in menopausal women (where testosterone contributes to libido). There is limited evidence of DHEA increasing testosterone in all studies including youthful athletes, which are less studied.
In summary, while there is evidence to suggest that specific supplements can contribute positively to men's health, a cautious approach is essential. Prior to initiating any supplementation regimen, consultation with a qualified healthcare provider is
strongly advised. Individual health status, dietary habits, and potential interactions with medications need to be taken into account. Moreover, supplements should not be viewed as standalone solutions but rather as part of a holistic strategy that incorporates a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and adequate sleep for optimizing men's health and well-being.
Although it's important to present more scientific evidence to support the positive results, supplementing with various ingredients can bring numerous benefits to men's health on multiple levels.

It partners with the best raw material suppliers and, by working with the R&D department, develops and provides formulations supported by scientific evidence that meet consumer and medical advisor needs.

By having smallscale plants which represent the main production technologies in the various factories, Fine Foods can develop new products quickly and efficiently, drawing up technological feasibility studies and finelytuned sensory testing.

The Trenzano plant, for example, obtained ICEA, Cosmos Organic and Cosmos Natural certifications, the standard that assures consumers of the organic or natural origin and that applies to cosmetic products and their raw materials.
The same plant obtained the Eco Bio Cosmesi e Cos-
mesi Naturale Standard which certifies cosmetic products, raw materials for cosmetic use and cosmetic products for pets, organic ingredients and chemical substances of natural origin, selected based on environmental sustainability and health criteria.
This unshakeable determination led the company to significant milestones such as, training more than half of the staff in the Purchasing, Sales and R&D departments, implementation of a product "Carbon Footprint" project and the preparation of ecodesign strategies.

Aluminium tubes are among mostly used form of packaging in the world today because of well known benefits: light weight, easy handling, excellent standards of hygiene, outstanding barrier properties, optimal product protection and recyclability-sustainability. The most important characteristic of the aluminum tube is its barrier propertie. Aluminum is impermeable to light and air and resistant to heat and corrosion. It does not let in bacteria, microbes and other potentially harmful particles. It also prevents the evaporation of the evaporable components of the paste product. This means that the precious and sensitive ingredients remain effective over a longer period, whereby the use of preservatives is avoided.
Material doesn't spring back so neither air nor contents are drawn back into the tube. An aluminium tube can be emptied completely without difficulty.

Consumer interest in mental health and wellness is rapidly growing and the understanding of the important connection between the microbiome in the gut and mood, cognition and mental health continues to increase. Probiotic supplements supporting mental health and wellness are forecasted to have a significant market growth of 44% in the coming 10 years, from 140 million USD 2023 to 202 million USD 2033. The connection is often referred to as the gutbrain axis, a bi-directional communication between the gut microbiota and neural, endocrinal, and immune pathways. Studies in both animals and humans have shown that probiotics can reduce anxiety-like behavior, decrease stress and stress-related gastrointestinal dysfunction, as well as impact circulating levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines.
The randomized controlled study investigated the effects of the HEAL9™ strain on stress, cognition, sleep and mood in 129 healthy but stressed individuals. The data showed significantly improved learning and working memory after consumption of HEAL9™ for 12 weeks compared to placebo. There were also strong tendencies for improved mood and sleep in the HEAL9™ group. This is the third clinical study in mental health documenting strong results on HEAL9™.

The immune health category has gained increased focus since the Covid-19 pandemic. Consumer interest in immune health is growing, with a demand for botanicals and gut microbiome products. Businesses have opportunities to enter and expand in this market.

Immunity is the body's inherent capacity to counteract diseases, achieved through the immune system's defence against an array of pathogens ranging from molecules to parasites. This defence is structured into two primary tiers.
The first, the innate immune system, furnishes an expedient initial barrier against a broad spectrum of pathogens. Constituents of this system encompass physical barriers, notably the skin, as well as nonspecific chemical deterrents like lysozyme found in
secretions. Additionally, nonpathogenic normal flora bacteria compete for resources with pathogenic counterparts. If these defences are breached, an inflammatory response ensues, luring immune cells to the infection site and dilating blood vessels for enhanced transportation. Interferons can be discharged to combat viruses and tumours, while the complement system engages pathogen membranes, either rupturing them or facilitating elimination by other immune elements. Activation of innate immune cells,
such as phagocytes capable of ingesting and destroying invaders, natural killer cells which target virusinfected and tumour cells, and eosinophils that release substances detrimental to parasites, further contribute to this response.
The second tier, the adaptive immune system, necessitates time to react to pathogenic intrusion but subsequently orchestrates a precise counter to the invader. Unlike the nonspecific response of the innate system, the adaptive system's reactions are pathogen-specific. Importantly, the adaptive system can recollect previous pathogens, enabling a quicker and more effective response upon re-encounter. Comprising T cells and B cells, the adaptive immune system is initiated upon antigen recognition. T cells, divided into cytotoxic (CD8+) and helper (CD4+) types, respectively eliminate virus-infected and cancer cells and modulate immune responses via cytokine secretion. B cells, on the other hand, generate pathogenspecific antibodies that can neutralize, engage the complement system, or enhance phagocytosis. These adaptive responses rely on antigens, recognized by T and B cells, to activate the immune process. Memory cells expedite future reactions, and regulatory T cells mitigate excessive responses.
The synergy of these immune levels ensures comprehensive protection against a diverse range of threats, underscoring their indispensable roles in maintaining health.
• Older age: as we age, our internal organs may become less efficient; immune-related organs like the thymus or bone marrow produce fewer immune cells needed to fight off infections. Ageing is sometimes associated with micronutrient deficiencies, which may worsen a declining immune function.
• Environmental toxins (smoke and other particles contributing to air pollution, excessive alcohol): these substances can impair or suppress the normal activity of immune cells.
• Excess weight: obesity is associated with low-grade chronic inflammation. Fat tissue produces adipocytokines that can promote inflammatory pro-
cesses.
• Poor diet: malnutrition or a diet lacking in one or more nutrients can impair the production and activity of immune cells and antibodies.
• Chronic diseases: autoimmune and immunodeficiency disorders attack and potentially disable immune cells.
• Chronic mental stress: stress releases hormones like cortisol that suppress inflammation (inflammation is initially needed to activate immune cells) and the action of white blood cells.
• Lack of sleep and rest: sleep is a time of restoration for the body, during which a type of cytokine is released that fights infection; too little sleep lowers the amount of these cytokines and other immune cells1
Immune health is gaining more importance for consumers and is no longer limited to cold and flu season but is now a year-round concern. Their perception of immunity is moving also toward allergy management and autoimmune diseases.
Consumers expect easier access to immune health products, diverse options, and personalized delivery formats. New formats like drops, bars, and gummies are emerging in the immune health market, together with already popular lozenges, and syrups. New ingredient technologies are getting more and more important, like the slow-release profile of the ingredients or liposomal form, especially vitamin C, but other vitamins and minerals are joining.
Immune health was the top claim in global supplement development in 2020. Natural vitamin C and zinc are popular, but there is growing interest in botanicals like black elderberry and black seed oil. Probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics play a significant role in immune health due to their impact on the gut microbiome.
Experts predict a shift towards multi-functional products that combine immune support with other health benefits. The association between gut and immune health is gaining importance. Also, products targeted to the combination of sleep and immune health are emerging.
Food supplements can help support the immune system by providing essential vitamins and minerals
that may be lacking in the diet.
Some of the main micronutrients that play a role in the immune response include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate, zinc, iron, and copper. Deficiencies in specific vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, zinc, and others, may weaken immune system. Taking supplements containing these vitamins and minerals may help support immune system function.
In the following text, we will go through some food supplement ingredients targeting immune health, that deserve attention.
There have been several studies that suggest probiotics play a significant role in maintaining host health by regulating the immune response and defending against pathogens. Probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics can, directly and indirectly, regulate microbiota and immune response. Probiotics can improve intestinal microbiota homeostasis, maintain gut barrier integrity, and modulate immune response.
In addition, postbiotics, such as the bioactive metabolites, produced by gut microbiota, and/or cell-wall components released by probiotics, also have been shown to inhibit pathogen growth, maintain microbiota balance, and regulate an immune response2
In summary, probiotics have been shown to have a beneficial effect on the immune system by regulating the balance of gut microbiota, modulating immune response, and maintaining gut barrier integrity. However, further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms by which probiotics exert their beneficial effects.
Astaxanthin is a natural, red-pigmented ketocarotenoid found in some types of microalgae and yeast. It is a powerful antioxidant that plays a role in protecting cells from free radicals and oxidative stress. Astaxanthin can influence immune system, helping to activate white blood cells (T-cells) and natural killer (NK) cells. Along with boosting the immune system, astaxanthin may also help to reduce inflammation3
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 42 participants were allocated to take either 0, 2, or 8 mg of astaxanthin daily for 8 weeks.
At the end of 8 weeks, lymphocyte proliferation induced by phytohemagglutinin was decreased in all groups, and the least in the 8 mg group, with concanavalin A, it was increased in only the 8 mg group and was increased in all groups, but the most in the 8 mg group for pokeweed mitogen (0 and 2 mg weren't different). There was a statistically significant increase in T-cells in all groups and a greater increase in the astaxanthin groups. There was a reduction in total B cells in the 8 mg group, and none in the 2 mg group or the 0 mg group. Skin reaction in response to a tuberculin DTH test was increased in all groups after 48 and 78 hours, and the least increased by 8 mg after 72 hours, while the most increased by 2 mg.
There was no statistically significant difference in TNA, while IFN-γ was increased the most by 6 mg, and not by 2 or 0, while IL-6 was increased the most by 8 mg and not by the others, and IL-2 wasn't statistically significantly different.
C-reactive protein was significantly reduced in all groups after 8 weeks, and most reduced by 2 mg. 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, a marker of DNA damage, was reduced considerably in the astaxanthin groups, and was reduced somewhat more after 8 weeks though the difference compared with 2 wasn't statistically significant, and was the inverse of at 4 weeks. The authors reported no difference in the change in plasma 8-isoprostane. Therefore, the conclusion of the study was dietary astaxanthin decreases a DNA damage biomarker and acute phase protein and enhances immune response in young healthy females4
As for its future potential, astaxanthin's popularity as a dietary supplement has been increasing due to its antioxidant properties and potential health benefits. In the future, continued research may shed more light on its role in immune health and other aspects of well-being.
Lactoferrin
Lactoferrin is a protein found naturally in the milk of humans, cows, and other mammals. It is also found in other bodily fluids like saliva, tears, mucus, and bile. Lactoferrin has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, and helps the body transport and absorb iron. In humans, the highest concentrations of lactoferrin can be found in colostrum, which is a very nutrient-dense first form of breastmilk produced soon after a baby is born.
Clinical trials in adults and children show that lactoferrin supplements can reduce respiratory tract infections, like the common cold. While a lot of work has looked at the effects of lactoferrin in laboratory experiments and animal studies, little research has been done in humans to understand how lactoferrin supplements alter immune function to provide this protection against respiratory infections.
Lactoferrin helps regulate iron levels by balancing the amount of iron in the blood and that present in tissues and cells. This is one way that Lactoferrin provides antibacterial and antiviral properties by removing free iron which these pathogens need to grow.
Due to its similarities to transferrin (which is the main iron transporting molecule in serum) α-LF possesses iron binding capabilities, and it can chelate two ferric irons (Fe3+). LF binds one ferric iron atom in each of its two lobes; however, an important attribute is that it does not release its iron, even at pH 3.5. This is of importance as this property assures iron sequestration in infected tissues where the pH is commonly acidic. In the context of its iron-binding capabilities, it means that when it binds ferric and siderophore-bound iron, it limits the availability of essential iron to microbes.
In healthy individuals, iron is largely intracellular and sequestered within ferritin or as a co-factor of cytochromes and FeS proteins, and as haem complexed to haemoglobin within erythrocytes. Circulating iron is rapidly bound by transferrin. When erythrocytes lyse and haemoglobin or haem is released into the circulation, their haemoglobin is captured by haptoglobin, and haem by hemopexin. Here, circulating serum ferroxidase ceruloplasmin is of importance, as LF can bind to ceruloplasmin, such that a direct transfer of ferric iron between the two proteins is possible. A direct transfer of ferric iron from cerulo-
plasmin to lactoferrin prevents both the formation of potentially toxic hydroxyl radicals and the utilization of iron by pathogenic bacteria. LF is, therefore, an important player in preventing bacteria from acquiring and sequestering iron, which [with the possible exception of Borrelia burgdorferi]; they require for growth and virulence. LF also acts as a biomarker, as it is commonly upregulated when the host is suffering from various kinds of disease5 (Figure 1).
The potential of Nigellasativa seeds in the realms of allergic rhinitis and immunity is garnering substantial attention within scientific discourse. Renowned for their diverse bioactive constituents, Nigella sativa seeds exhibit properties that suggest a role in both alleviating allergic rhinitis symptoms and
hancing the body's immune mechanisms.
Nigella sativa seeds contain thymoquinone, a potent bioactive compound that has shown promise in modulating immune responses and attenuating allergic reactions. Studies have indicated thymoquinone's ability to mitigate inflammation and suppress histamine release, which are pivotal factors in allergic rhinitis.
Moreover, Nigella sativa seeds possess antioxidant and immunomodulatory attributes, which contribute to their potential in bolstering overall immune function. By aiding in the regulation of immune cells and their responses, these seeds may play a role in maintaining immune homeostasis and potentially reducing the frequency or severity of allergic reactions.
However, while the preliminary research is encouraging, further in-depth investigations are necessary to fully elucidate the mechanisms behind Nigella sativa seeds' effects on allergic rhinitis and immunity. Clinical trials and rigorous studies will provide a more comprehensive understanding of their potential benefits and therapeutic applications.
One study was done as a supplementary approach to allergic rhinitis management. This study investigated the effects of Nigella sativa seed supplementation on allergic rhinitis patients undergoing allergen-specific immunotherapy. The trial group consisted of 24 patients, with an average age of 34, who exhibited sensitivity to house dust mites and suffered from allergic rhinitis. A comparative control group of eight healthy volunteers, averaging 23 years of age, provided a baseline for evaluation.
The core of the study revolved around administering allergen-specific immunotherapy to all participants over a span of 30 days. Following this initial phase, 12 patients from the experimental group and all healthy volunteers were introduced to Nigellasativa seed supplementation. These individuals ingested a daily oral dose of 2 grams of Nigellasativaseed for an additional 30 days. Meanwhile, the remaining 12 patients continued solely on immunotherapy, and 7 experimental group participants received a placebo.
The study's outcomes were both intriguing and sig-
nificant. Participants who underwent specific immunotherapy witnessed a marked surge in the activities of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), key players in the immune response. Their capacity to phagocytize and internally eliminate invading pathogens experienced a notable enhancement. Importantly, the incorporation of Nigella sativa seed supplementation acted as an accelerant, further augmenting these critical functions.
Venturing beyond PMNs, the study explored the realm of lymphocyte subsets. Notably, patients subjected to specific immunotherapy and Nigellasativa seed supplementation experienced a substantial increase in CD8 lymphocyte counts. This finding bears significance as CD8 lymphocytes play a pivotal role in orchestrating immune responses against various invaders, including virus-infected cells and malignant growths.
Even healthy volunteers - individuals not grappling with allergic rhinitis - reaped benefits from Nigella sativa seed supplementation. Their PMN functions exhibited a pronounced upswing post-supplementation. This discovery prompts a broader consideration of Nigella sativa seed's potential beyond targeted interventions.
The findings of this study present compelling avenues for exploration. The amalgamation of Nigella sativa seed supplementation with specific immunotherapy offers a novel pathway for elevating immune responses in allergic rhinitis patients. As we unravel the underlying mechanisms, Nigellasativa seed stands poised to redefine our approach to managing allergic conditions6
Another study aimed to identify the bioactive components in Nigellasativa seeds and investigate their immune-regulating properties. The researchers isolated and identified a new compound (3-methoxythymol-6-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside) and 11 known compounds from the seeds.
They evaluated the immunomodulatory effects of these compounds on RAW 264.7 cells, a type of macrophage, through various assays including phagocytosis, nitric oxide production, cytokine release, mRNA transcription, and protein expression. The results
showed that monosaccharide derivatives in the seeds played bidirectional regulatory roles in immunity and anti-inflammation through the regulation of the NF-κB signalling pathways.
The findings of the study, include the identification of the new compound and the effects of the compounds on cell viability, phagocytic activity, nitric oxide production, cytokine release, mRNA transcription, and protein expression. These findings suggest that Nigella sativa seeds could be used as dietary supplements for immune modulation7
Nigella sativa seeds showcase promising potential as a supplement for immune system enhancement and allergy management. With their rich array of bioactive compounds, including thymoquinone, these seeds hold the prospect of bolstering immunity and alleviating allergic reactions. Sulforaphane is a compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may help boost the immune system.
Sulforaphane exists in food in its food bound form known as glucoraphanin, a glycoside (bound to a sugar) or sulforaphane that is commonly seen as a prodrug or storage form of sulforaphane. Glucoraphanin is one of a few molecules known as isothiocyanates, existing mostly in cruciferous vegetables.
Sources of sulforaphane and/or glucoraphanin include:
• broccoli (44-171 mg/100 g dry weight)
• broccoli sprouts (1153 mg/100 g dry weight).
Sulforaphane is an active isothiocyanate, found in food via its storage form of glucoraphanin. The application of heat can enhance the absorption of sulforaphane, but the excessive application of heat can prevent most sulforaphane from being absorbed; a balancing act exists8
Boiling broccoli in 1.5 L water appears to inactivate myrosinase after 1 minute, with the authors of this study concluding that without dipping broccoli into ice water after 30s of heating (to reduce heat application after being removed from liquid) that boiling is unlikely to be an effective method of preparation9
Steaming appears to be the best preservation method, with microwaving coming in second place; boiling broccoli appears to be a highly ineffective way to preserve sulforaphane content.
There are several studies that have investigated the effects of sulforaphane on immunity. One study showed that sulforaphane switches on a set of antioxidant genes and enzymes in specific immune cells, which then combat the injurious effects of molecules known as free radicals that can damage cells and lead to disease.
However, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of sulforaphane on immunity.
A review published in the journal Molecules found that sulforaphane has the potential to enhance the natural immune system. The mechanism underlying the health-promoting effect of sulforaphane relates to its indirect action at the cellular level by inducing antioxidant and phase II detoxifying enzymes through the activation of transcription nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like (Nrf2)9 (Figure 2).
The summary provides information on several clinical trials investigating the effect of sulforaphane on immune system disorders.
One mentioned trial studied the effects of broccoli sprout extract on allergy rhinitis in 47 adults (older adults with allergic rhinitis or healthy individuals). The trial lasted for 18 months, and the participants received broccoli sprout extract. The trial was completed, and it was found that sulforaphane reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines with and without combination with fluticasone9
The food supplements industry is increasingly focusing on immunity-related products, reflecting growing consumer demand for natural ways to support immune health. Today, the effects of black seed oil have been rigorously tested to determine the active compounds and applied health benefits in more than 900 studies3, including in vitro , in vivo , and human clinical trials. Black seed oil (BSO) has several key phytochemical compounds: thymoquinone, p-Cymene, carvacrol, its fatty acids and free fatty acids (FFA). Much of the biological activity is attributed to the thymoquinone (TQ) content in the oil5. Black cumin seed naturally contains 0.3-0.7% thymoquinone (TQ) and 25%-40% oil. Standardization is achieved through selective extraction or by using plant varieties cultivated to contain higher TQ content. What appears to work best in achieving a balanced and full-spectrum BSO is using freshly harvested black cumin seeds and a cold-pressed extraction. Using fresh sources with cold-pressed extraction yields a standardized, full-spectrum oil with optimal ratios of all the bioactives found in black seeds. Specifically, clinical and non-clinical research has shown that 3% TQ, combined with low free fatty
acids (less than 2%) and other important bioactives at optimal levels, provides superior potential compared to other BSO compositions. These precise ratios contribute to the synergistic effects available in Nigella sativa oil and TriNutra’s branded BSO, ThymoQuin® specifically.
Conversely, extractions that force high thymoquinone concentrations often leave other beneficial compounds out or in low proportions, resulting in a narrow composition and reduced therapeutic benefit.
Research has found that beyond thymoquinone standardization, optimal amounts of the active biologics p-Cymene, carvacrol, and free fatty acids also play a significant role in black seed oil’s health benefits. p-Cymene is a naturally occurring aromatic organic compound. Finally, the level of free fatty acids (FFA) or acid value in other words, is correlated to the freshness of the seeds, processing method, and product stability. Research examining the FFA content of BSO showed that a higher FFA content reduces the efficacy of thymoquinone and causes rancidity of the oil. Understanding what constitutes a quality black seed oil, TriNutra also discovered a method to enhance the bioavailability and stability of its branded black seed oil extract, ThymoQuin®, by adding minor amounts of sunflower derivatives, significantly improving bioavailability. The growth of two opportunistic fungal pathogens, Malassezia furfur and an antibiotic-resistant strain of Candida albicans were most inhibited by a combination of high amounts of thymoquinone (3%) and low amounts of free fatty acids (2%).9

ThymoQuin®: The Gold Standard of Black Seed Oil
Black seed oil has many therapeutic benefits including its ability to support a balanced inflammatory response, improve mitochondrial activity, including ATP production, and delivering excellent antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial effects. It’s reported that stress-related gut dysbiosis and immune alterations can represent significant challenges for not only the exercise performance of ath-

In the published study, researchers used “exercise stress” of endurance running to challenge the gut microbiome resilience and temporarily suppress immune vigilance. This randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial investigated ThymoQuin® as a natural immune modulator on upper-respiratory tract complaints and mood state in endurance runners following the stress of training and competition over four weeks. The study volunteers received 500 mg of ThymoQuin or a placebo per day. Following four weeks of supplementation, the total number of URTC complaints, including nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, sneezing, cough, fatigue, headache, general malaise, and body aches, were 62% lower in the supplement group when compared to the placebo. Additionally, the supplement group demonstrated an 11% improvement in the Global Mood State index and had lower cortisol levels (44%) when compared to the placebo. The bacteria strain, Streptococcus thermophilus , was 66% higher than the placebo group, suggesting a significant improved immune system regulation.
The study demonstrated ThymoQuin’s ability to act as a natural ‘immune-modulator’ for improved physical and mental health compared to the placebo.
TriNutra also tested its black seed oil in combination with omega-3 fish oils. The study, published in the ECronicon Journal, was conducted with marathon runners who consumed an oil blend of 500 mg of ThymoQuin® plus 1,500 mg of fish oil, or a placebo oil for four weeks. During the 4-week treatment period (3 weeks before and 1 weeks after an intense endurance run), the subjects who supplemented with the ThymoQuin and omega-3 oil blend reported significantly (-62%) fewer upper-respiratory tract complaints (URTCs), better overall health and a more positive mood (+15%) when compared to the placebo group. Additionally, the supplemented runners showed greater omega-3 blood levels and higher levels of
Streptococcus thermophilus (+67%) and lower stress hormone exposure (cortisol -37%) both of which are associated with immune vigilance and psychological mood state.

One published human clinical trial investigated ThymoQuin’s ability to improve cardiovascular function in healthy adults over six weeks. Following a three-week washout period, patients were given placebo treatment for six weeks, with blood pressure measured daily. The results indicated a significant decrease in blood pressure with 500mg/day of ThymoQuin after 2 days already and was maintained continuously over the six weeks6
A second clinical study demonstrated ThymoQuin’s ability to aid in healthy blood sugar levels when combined with omega-3. The pair reduced adipocyte hypertrophy-induced inflammation, enhanced AMPK activation, fatty acid metabolism, and mitochondrial function, and reprogrammed unhealthy white to healthy beige adipocytes7 .
Another study researched ThymoQuin on metabolic function and fatty liver in a murine model of obesity. The eight-week study had three subject groups: group 1 - lean; group 2 - high fat diet; group 3 - high fat diet supplemented with ThymoQuin. In-
flammatory biomarkers, antioxidant biomarkers, mitochondrial biogenesis, tissue fat accumulation, and hepatic steatosis were determined. The results demonstrated that ThymoQuin intervention attenuated the obesity-mediated decrease of oxygen consumption and fasting glucose and improved mitochondrial biogenesis. These findings indicated that ThymoQuin could significantly impact the metabolic markers8 .

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in maintaining health and vitality. One of its basic tasks is antioxidant activity. Also, it has been proven that vitamin E protects cells from oxidative stress, which has also been confirmed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).1
Vitamin E naturally exists in eight different forms: four tocopherols, alpha (α)-tocopherol, beta (β)-tocopherol, gamma (γ)-tocopherol, and delta (δ)-tocopherol, as well as four tocotrienols, alpha-tocotrienol, beta-tocotrienol, gamma-tocotrienol, and delta-tocotrienol.

Following an opinion on tocopherol mixtures, rice tocotrienols/ tocopherols, and palm tocotrienols (containing also a minor part of tocopherols) as sources of vitamin E added as a nutritional substance in food supplements, the EFSA concluded that 'the use of tocopherol mixtures and tocotrienol tocopherol (from rice bran oil distillate) as a source of vitamin E in food supplements for the general population, at the proposed use levels, does not pose a risk to safety. However, the available safety data are insufficient to conclude on the safety of the proposed use and use levels of tocotrienols (from fruits of oil palm (Elaeis Guineensis))'. 2

Vitamin E is the collective term for a family of chemical substances that are structurally related to alpha-tocopherol. Vitamin E occurs naturally in eight different forms: four tocopherols, alpha ( α) -, beta ( β )-, gamma ( γ )- and delta ( δ )-tocopherol and four tocotrienols, α -, β -, γ - and δ -tocotrienol.

Theraprime® represents a unique source of vitamin E because, unlike all other sources, it provides the complete spectrum of vitamin E isomers, meaning all 4 corresponding tocotrienols and 4 tocopherols.
While the activity of alpha-tocopherol is wellknown, the biological role of tocotrienols has been widely underestimated, despite studies demonstrating their unique physiological functions. Recent research has suggested that tocotrienols, lesserknown relatives of vitamin E, exhibit antioxidant activities4 that are 40 to 60 times greater than those of tocopherols5,6 and possess unique biological functions that are unrelated to antioxidant activity and not shared by tocopherol7. Even among tocopherols, specific importance is attributed to the lesser-known isomers than alpha-tocopherol, as it has been reported that supplementation with high doses of alpha-tocopherol alone depletes the availability of gamma-tocopherol thereby negating the benefits of gamma-tocopherol not shared by alpha-tocopherol, unlike supplementation with gamma-tocopherol, which increases both.8 Therefore, it has been suggested that the full benefits of vitamin E are best achieved through supplementation with the complete spectrum of vitamin E isomers, so with all 4 corresponding tocotrienols and tocopherols9,10 like in Theraprime® produced by BGG. This being especially important in individuals with insufficient vitamin E intake11 and in the elderly12 (due to the detrimental effect of low tocopherol and tocotrienol intake and serum levels on bone, muscle mass, and cognitive functions).
Furthermore, gamma-tocotrienol, one of the primary tocotrienols present in Theraprime®, has been shown to inhibit the enzymatic activity of HMG-CoA reductase without affecting SCAPSREBP, thereby theoretically enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of statins or providing a therapeutic alternative.13,14 These biochemical findings have been supported by several clinical studies demonstrating that tocotrienol/tocopherol mixtures derived from rice bran can support cardiovascular health.15,18
Indeed, rice tocotrienols/tocopherols can be referred to as the "Cardio King" because almost all research on this source has been conducted in areas related to cardiovascular health, particularly cholesterol reduction.

The Olive (Olea europea L.) is an evergreen shrub or tree from the same family as olives (Oleaceae). The tree is branched and grows up to 10 meters in height, forming an irregular, knotty trunk with many branches and a wide, asymmetrical crown. The root is spindle-shaped, branched, and very developed. The bark is initially smooth and grayish but later becomes rough and cracks into dark scales. The buds are covered with greyish hairs. The leaves are opposite, evergreen, leathery, elongated, 3-10 cm long, and up to 2 cm wide, with a whole edge, pointed tip, silver-grey on the back, located on short petioles. The flowers are bisexual, monoecious, regular, small, and pleasant-smelling, gathered in loose panicle inflorescences and grow from the axils of the leaves. The perianth is double, consisting of a calyx and corolla. The calyx is made up of four lobes, and the corolla has four white petals.
It blooms in April and May. The ovary is superior and carries two seed embryos. Bees visit the flowers and collect pollen. The fruit is a fleshy, oval drupe, 1-3 cm long and up to 2 cm wide. Initially green, it becomes dark blue, black, or brownish-green when ripe. It ripens in September and October.
Olive trees grow wild in the Mediterranean region and are cultivated in Mediterranean countries and in regions with a similar climate in the USA.
The leaves and fruits of the Olive (Oleaeuropea L.) are used, both of which have a bitter taste. The leaves are harvested throughout the year, and the fruits when they ripen in late autumn. The leaf is used to reduce high blood pressure, as a diuretic, and to reduce blood sugar. The leaves of wild trees are believed to contain a higher concentration of active principles.
The fruits are used for the production of olive oil and as food, but they have to be processed first. In the Mediterranean region, 90% of olives are used to make olive oil.

Olive leaves lower blood pressure and help improve the circulatory system. They are also mildly diuretic and may be used to treat conditions such as cystitis. Possessing some ability to lower blood sugar levels, the leaves have been taken for diabetes.
The oil has been traditionally taken with lemon juice in teaspoonful doses to treat gallstones. The oil has a generally protective action on the digestive tract and is useful for dry skin.
Olives are very high in vitamin E and other powerful antioxidants. Studies show that they are good for the heart and may protect against osteoporosis and cancer. Oleic acid is linked to several health benefits, including decreased inflammation and a reduced risk of heart disease.
Olives are particularly rich in antioxidants, including oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, oleanolic acid, and quercetin. Dietary antioxidants have been shown to reduce risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease.

But just being “natural” is no longer enough, as awareness of potentially harmful components such as microplastics, harsh preservatives or nanoparticles becomes more widespread. In addition, issues such as sustainability throughout the global value chain are gaining traction. Therefore, the current approach to finished products is that they should be real allrounders in terms of efficiency, sensory appeal and “clean-green labelling”.
For future-proof formulas, Omya, an expert in natural minerals and complementary ingredients, is creating waterless and eco-friendly solutions. Today, 2.3 billion people live in water-stressed countries, which is a major consideration in the sustainability

Natural ingredients derived for food provide important functions as antioxidants and moisturizing agents: emollients, occlusives and humectants. They serve multiple benefits to the skin.
The main role of antioxidants in skin care products is to prevent damage to the skin caused by free radicals.
Some of the biological processes that take place in the body result in the formation of free radicals. These are chemical species that have at least one unpaired electron, which makes them very unstable, but also reactive. To become stable, these molecules need to pair with one electron and find it in another molecule. This process is called an oxidative reaction. Now the second molecule is lacking an electron, it becomes a free radical and looks for a new molecule to provide the electron it needs. This way a chain reaction is started.
In addition, numerous highly reactive free radicals, obtained from molecular oxygen, are reactive oxygen species (ROS). Basically, ROS are by-products of body’s aerobic metabolism. ROS react with proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, in the form of their degradation and thus cause cell damage.
When the generation of ROS and other free radicals highly increase, due to the influence of internal factors, as body physiological reactions, and external environmental factors, as pollution, UV irradiation, climate and smoking, a phenomenon known as oxidative stress is occurring. The body cannot protect cells from these reactive products anymore. Cell damage begins to appear. Oxidative stress also affects the reduction of collagen and elastin production and accelerates the aging process of the skin, such as formation of wrinkles, skin dryness, and loss of skin tone.
The human body can mitigate the damage caused by these reactions with the help of molecules with antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are molecules that fight and neutralize free radicals, as scavengers, stopping the oxidative chain reaction before vital compounds are damaged. They protect cells from oxidative damage and reduce the effects it causes.
The low water content of the skin is the main cause of skin ageing and skin dryness. The most visible signs are the dull look, uneven tone, and fine wrinkles. More difficult forms of skin dryness are scaly skin, flakes, redness, and irritation. Retention of water in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin, is essential for adequate moisturization of the skin. This can be achieved by preventing the evaporation of water from the skin using occlusive ingredients, using emollients to keep water under protective film or by keeping the integrity of the skin barrier. Emollients form a film on your skin’s outer layer with a dual role. The first role is as a protective film to prevent the loss of moisture. The second role is to soften skin by soothing dry and irritating parts of skin.
Natural emollients from food sources are derived from vegetable oils and various plant extracts. Plant derived emollients are extracted from plant leaves, plant seeds, ground fruit or nuts.
Occlusives form a thick and greasy layer on your skin. Their function is to prevent water loss and to keep it at the current level. Occlusives do not increase the moisture, but they form an effective barrier to retain existing water.
Humectants provide moisturization by drawing water from deeper layers and from the air and by locking the water in the stratum corneum. Humectants increase the moisture level.

Coconut oil is considered an effective moisturizer and emollient especially for dry skin, as it has water-retention properties. As an occlusive ingredient, it forms film on the top of the skin and keeps moisture underneath, soothing the skin. In addition, it improves skin elasticity, improves uneven skin tone, and softens skin. It also provides low UV protection.
Olive oil is rich in vitamins A, D, K, and E, oleic acid, beta carotene, polyphenols, essential fatty acids, in particular alpha-linoleic acid. In addition, it contains a strong antioxidant squalene. Skincare products with olive oil are used to hydrate and nourish the skin, to prevent moisture loss and keep the skin soft. They help to prevent premature skin ageing.

Grape seed oil is extremely rich in powerful antioxidants. It contains resveratrol and polyphenolic compounds (proanthocyanidis and procyanidis), as free-radical scavengers and inhibitors of ROS. They can improve skin tone and provide protection against UV rays. In addition, it contains omega fatty acids, vitamins E and F, and vitamin C. Hair is an important part of the human body and one of the main fashion details. It has been a status symbol throughout history, up to the present day. Hair loss and hair loss represent a minor health problem when looking at the patient's physical health, however, it significantly affects the quality of his life, as it causes a feeling of inferiority. Research shows that people with alopecia, especially women, have a higher incidence of psychiatric disorders such as social phobia, anxiety and depression.
The problem of hair loss affects both men and women, and given that the causes can be numerous, it presents a major challenge for healthcare professionals in search of the cause, but also an effective solution to this problem. Various factors can lead to hair loss or alopecia, including genetic predisposition, medications, systemic diseases, trauma, diet, endocrine and psychological abnormalities.
Under normal circumstances, the biological processes that involve hair growth and shedding are in balance. Each hair goes through a repeated cycle of active growth and rest, and the duration of each cycle varies among individuals. The average person has about 100,000 hairs, all in different stages of the growth cycle. There are three main phases of hair growth: anagen (growth phase), catagen (transitional phase), and telogen (resting phase). The anagen phase lasts on average from two to seven years, the catagen phase about two weeks, and the telogen phase about three months. About 84% of the scalp is in the anagen phase, 1 to 2% in the catagen phase, and 10 to 15% in the telogen phase.
The anagen phase is the stage where there is intense mitotic division in the matrix area of the hair, as well as keratinization and shaping of a complex cylindrical formation that constantly grows. During

Hair loss is a common issue that affects both men and women and finding the root cause presents a major challenge both in the search for the cause and in finding effective solutions and ingredients that can help.

this phase, hair never falls out spontaneously, and when plucked, pain is felt. The anagen phase is a stage of active growth where the follicle reaches its maximum length and volume. The catagen phase refers to the period of involution. In this phase, cells undergo apoptosis and hair stops growing and the follicle retracts. The telogen phase represents a dormant stage where there is a marked decrease in the proliferation and biochemical activity of the hair follicle. These cycles constantly alternate.
Unlike animals, the phases of hair growth in humans are not synchronized. Animals lose their hair all at once, while in humans some hairs fall out while others grow at the same time. There are circumstances in which transient synchronization of hair growth is possible in humans when hair falls out more intensely. Harmless and expected hair loss is that which usually occurs in spring or autumn, as well as hair loss after childbirth or during breastfeeding. This is physiological hair loss caused by scalp renewal. Concern should be raised if such hair loss is caused by other factors such as endocrine disorders, infectious diseases, surgical procedures, psychological trauma or taking certain medications.
Increased hair loss is termed effluvium, while alopecia is noticeable hair loss or baldness. Effluvium is always diffuse and most often transient in nature. By removing the factors that caused the increased hair loss, its regrowth and appearance are normalized. Alopecia can be focal or diffuse in nature, and removing its cause does not always result in hair regrowth.
Telogen effluvium is one of the most common causes of alopecia. It is a form of non-scarring alopecia characterized by diffuse, often acute hair loss. Factors such as traumatic events, and physiological or emotional stress can lead to it. Numerous medications such as beta-blockers, retinoids, anticoagulants, propylthiouracil and carbamazepine are associated with this condition.
Male androgenic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss in men. It affects 30-50% of the male population by the age of 50. About 38% of women who have a problem with hair loss also have elevated levels of androgens. Key features of this condition are changes in the development of the hair cycle and inflammation. The length of the anagen phase decreases with each cycle, while the telogen phase remains constant or lengthens, and eventually, the anagen phase becomes so short that the growing hair cannot achieve sufficient length. Thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can lead to alopecia.
The most common form of hair loss in women is hormonally conditioned. Increased hair loss occurs equally with a lack of female sex hormones - estrogen, as well as with an excess of male sex hormones - testosterone. Diffuse hair loss after childbirth and in postmenopause occurs due to decreased levels of
estrogen. Lack of estrogen inhibits the induction of hair growth, so initially the ratio between growing hairs and falling hairs changes.
With the synchronization of hair growth towards the end of pregnancy, hair grows rapidly and flourishes, so the proportion of hairs in the growth phase is about 80 to 85%. After childbirth, the situation reverses, and due to the absence of menstruation and lack of estrogen, the proportion of hairs in the growth phase drops to only 25 to 30%. That is why many women complain about increased hair loss after childbirth. There is actually no problem here, because with the onset of a normal menstrual cycle after childbirth, the level of estrogen normalizes, and with it normal hair growth.
Increased hair loss in postmenopause is also a condition that occurs due to a lack of estrogen. In this case, the situation can be improved by systemic or local hormone therapy, and the effect depends on its duration.
In addition to a lack of estrogen, an excess of the male sex hormone testosterone can be responsible for hair loss in women. However, there are cases where there is no increased concentration of testosterone in the blood. The main cause of this is an inherited increased sensitivity of the hair root to dihydrotestosterone, an active metabolite of testosterone, which inhibits hair growth and development until the complete disappearance of the hair and its root. The result in both cases is so-called androgenic, i.e. male type baldness or alopecia.
When the level of testosterone is actually elevated, appropriate (anti) hormonal therapy is applied. Prior to this, it is necessary to exclude adrenal gland diseases and tumors that produce male sex hormones. In male-type baldness without elevated levels of testosterone, local preparations based on thymus, minoxidil and aminexil are used.
Androgenic hair loss can also occur in girls and women and is very often a consequence of hormonal imbalance within the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is characterized by increased hair loss, absence of ovulation, irregular menstrual cycles, increased body weight and acne. Treatment of PCOS is carried out by teamwork of gynaecologists, endocrinologists and dermatologists. A complete gynaecological, endocrinological and dermatological examination is necessary.
Although hair is very resilient, excessive bleaching, frequent hair colour changes, permanent dyes or frequent use of hair straighteners can damage the hair and cause it to break. These procedures do not directly cause hair loss, but breaking near the root leads to short and split hairs.
Hair growth requires a balanced diet rich in vitamins. Unbalanced diets and rapid diets can lead to temporary hair loss. Hair is healthiest with a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, proteins, whole grains, nuts and high-unsaturated fatty acids. If the diet is not optimal, it is necessary to supplement vitamins and minerals important for hair growth by taking special dietary supplements.
Hair loss can also be a consequence of infection. In this case, it is most often a focal hair loss or alopecia areata. Such foci can exist in larger numbers or an isolated focus can appear, not only on the scalp but also on other parts of the body. This type of hair loss is mediated by immunological mechanisms and very often represents a reaction to an inflammatory focus in the body, but can also be associated with stress.
Sometimes deep bacterial and fungal infections of the scalp skin, as well as some autoimmune skin diseases such as scleroderma, lupus and sarcoidosis, can cause permanent loss of hair roots. Clinical manifestations in addition to hair loss are the appearance of a scar on the affected part of the body. Since there are no more hair follicles on that part of the scalp, because it was destroyed by an inflammatory process, there is no possibility for its regrowth.
Hair loss as a result of COVID affects both women and men, and more and more patients have noticed that this unpleasant side effect lasts up to 6 months after recovery.
Hair loss caused by trauma or telogen effluvium is a type of alopecia, i.e. hair loss caused by traumatic events such as serious illnesses, injuries or surgical procedures, stress or physiological shock to the body. Since COVID-19 is not exclusively respiratory, but a systemic disease often accompanied by high fever, it can act on the body as one of the mentioned stressors that cause increased hair loss. When the body is endangered and "thrown" out of balance, the body directs most of its energy towards vital functions and puts everything else "on hold", including hair growth. Hair loss usually normalizes 6-12 months after recovery.
In the treatment of male androgenic alopecia, local minoxidil is used. It can partially prevent further baldness but requires continuous use to maintain
the effect. Minoxidil is a vasodilator that was originally used to treat hypertension. Its side effect is hypertrichosis, which limited its use, especially in women. Its unwanted side effect has become an indication for the treatment of alopecia.
In Croatia, it is available without a prescription as a 2% and 5% solution. As a 2% solution, minoxidil is indicated for the treatment of androgenic alopecia in men and women aged 18 to 65 years, and a 5% solution is indicated for the treatment of androgenic alopecia in men aged 18 to 65 years.
The response to treatment with this drug is very variable, and its onset of action as well as the degree of hair regrowth can vary among individuals. The minoxidil solution contains inactive ingredients including water, ethanol and propylene glycol which are used as carriers to increase solubility. Propylene glycol facilitates drug delivery to the hair follicle, but due to frequent local irritations induced by this ingredient, formulations of solutions without it have been developed, in the form of minoxidil foam.
Minoxidil shortens the telogen phase and opens potassium channels causing hyperpolarization of the cell membrane thus allowing more oxygen and nutrients to the follicles. It is also a vasodilator that increases blood flow to the scalp. The most common side effects of the solution are itching and irritation associated with propylene glycol in the formulation. Side effects associated with the use of minoxidil foam are headache, dyspnea, dermatitis and itching.
Aminexil is a trade name for kopeksil which is known as 2,4-diaminopyrimidine-3-N-oxide. It represents a modified form of minoxidil without side effects. It is a new patented compound that stimulates human keratin fibres, thus stopping hair loss. It helps reduce hair loss without changing collagen structure and maintains tissue elasticity around hair roots. In preparations, it is found as 1.5% aminexil which reduces accelerated aging of roots by fighting the fibrosis process. It is often combined with niacinamide and pyridoxine to enhance its effect.
Micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals play an important, but not entirely clear role in the normal development of hair follicles. In general, vitamins, minerals and proteins are considered essential for healthy hair growth.
Niacinamide (nicotinamide, nicotinic acid amide, vitamin PP, vitamin B3) is often used in shampoos and ampoules against hair loss. Niacinamide is the active form of vitamin B3 and a component of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide NAD coenzyme, through which it is involved in a wide range of biological processes including energy production, synthesis of fatty acids, cholesterol and steroids. It is a non-toxic compound that is quickly absorbed through the skin and widely distributed throughout the body, and is excreted through the urinary system.
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride) is one of the active ingredients in shampoos and ampoules against hair loss. It comes in combination with niacinamide as an addition to aminexil to enhance its effect on hair. Vitamin B6 functions as a nutrient for the hair root and helps in creating beautiful, shiny, stronger and thicker hair.
L-arginine is a semi-essential amino acid that participates in many important functions in the human body. As a precursor to nitric oxide, it plays an important role in hair growth because its vasodilatory effect favors its growth by opening potassium channels and improving the supply of nutrients to hair follicles.
Vitamin E is a lipid-soluble antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals in the skin, hair and body. Vitamin E can reduce hair loss, improve scalp health and circulation, and give shine to hair. Foods that naturally contain vitamin E are wheat germ oil, unrefined sunflower oil, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts, beets, cabbage, spinach, pumpkin, avocado.
Zinc is a key cofactor for several metalloenzymes and transcription factors. The required daily intake is 8-10 mg and is usually met by a normal diet. Deficiency can lead to telogen effluvium, the growth of thin white and brittle hair. Zinc catalyzes more than a hundred different reactions and helps strengthen the immune system and resistance to infections. It is essential for cell growth and helps maintain normal hormone levels in the blood, especially testosterone, so its effect on hair metabolism is observed from this aspect. It stimulates thyroid function whose reduced function affects hair loss. Zinc should be taken with copper to establish mineral balance in the body. Zinc stimulates protein synthesis and cell division, thus renewing hair strands.
Copper is part of the melanin pigment that gives color to hair and skin. It also participates in collagen synthesis, a protein that builds bones, skin and hair.
Selenium with zinc further stimulates healthy hair growth. It has an antioxidant role that prevents damage caused by free radicals. It is an important component of glutathione peroxidase. Its deficiency is most common in regions where the soil is poor in selenium and in patients on parenteral nutrition. Deficiency can lead to hypopigmentation of hair and skin. The recommended daily intake for adults is 55 µg.
Cystine is a non-essential dimeric amino acid containing two cysteine molecules covalently linked by
a disulfide bond. It has been found in large amounts in immune system cells, connective tissues, skin, digestive enzymes and hair. Skin and hair contain about 10-14% cystine in their composition, and its role in hair is to connect keratin chains through disulfide bonds. Keratin is the main protein in nails, skin and hair. Cystine is also important for collagen formation.
Vitamin C participates in collagen and elastin synthesis as well as keratin fiber bonding. Therefore a diet with sufficient amounts of vitamin C is very important for healthy hair.
Biotin or vitamin H is a carboxylase cofactor in mitochondria. Its deficiency is rare because it is synthesized by bacteria in the digestive tract but has been observed in congenital or acquired deficiency of biotinidase or carboxylase or in patients on parenteral nutrition.

The central point of Gordana Gorinšek's professional work is the safety of cosmetic products. In the regular column "An inspiring success story", Ms. Gorinšek, mag. ing. phytomedicine and Cosmetic Safety Assessor talks about her rich professional journey that evolved from producing her own cosmetic products to providing various services to clients in the cosmetics industry.
n How did it all start, what inspired you and what was the initial idea?
It's been a decade since Aromatični kutak began, and it's hard to believe how quickly time has passed. Technically, it started a year or two before its official legal establishment in July 2013. Nonetheless, I recently celebrated its ten-year anniversary, marking a decade of dedicated work and existence.
Establishing a trading company was a result of unfortunate circumstances. I experienced five years of unemployment, followed by a period of temporary and occasional jobs with no potential or promising outlook. The story of how I began was not romantic, but rather born out of existential necessity.
I believe that nothing in life happens by accident, whether it's good or bad. After completing my studies in phyto-medicine at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Agronomy, I decided to further my knowledge in aromatherapy by taking a one-year course. During my training, I learned how to prepare various aromatic and medicinal herb-based products that were highly effective in treating skin problems. Positive feedback and gratitude from my clients inspired me to consider self-employment and the creation of my own line of cosmetic products. As a freespirited and open-minded person, I find inspiration in every challenge that arises when dealing with skin issues, and I look forward to creating new products to meet those challenges.
n What was needed from idea to realization?
Starting my career as a cosmetic preparation manufacturer was a challenging journey. When I began, Croatia was joining the European Union, which meant strict legal provisions and a slow bureaucratic system. However, after a decade of being a part of the regulatory process, I can say that we have overcome the initial obstacles of legalizing and placing cosmetic products on the EU market. Despite this progress, becoming a cosmetics manufacturer in Croatia re-
mains difficult due to the high financial investments required. Whether entrepreneurs have their own production or outsource it, most financial resources are invested in production and advertising.
In the past as well as present times, organizing the production of 12 different products requires a preparation period of 18 months while following all legal requirements. This process demands a huge investment in renting and adapting a production facility with special conditions for production and the placement of objects for general use. The procurement of raw materials, packaging materials, laboratory testing, health correctness, stability products safety assessment, individual product, and other costs are also important factors. Furthermore, investing in intangible assets such as attention, dedication, patience, and perseverance is crucial. Without this "cocktail" of attributes, the realization of the idea is difficult to achieve, feasible, and sustainable.
n How satisfied are you with what you have achieved?
Since I finished producing cosmetic products after four years on the market many would think that I was not satisfied with what I achieved. Clients often ask me why I stopped being a manufacturer expecting an answer about unsuccessful sales. Actually, I am extremely satisfied because through the experience of production, I gained valuable knowledge that I now share with my clients, cosmetics manufacturers. Production showed me and paved the way for the business path I need to take, and that is the job of a cosmetic product safety assessor
n What services do you offer today and where and how do you market them?
As I have gained interdisciplinary knowledge through a decade of continuous education and training, both in Croatia and abroad, I am narrowly specialized in assessing the safety of cosmetic products on the EU market.
In addition to the website, the main way of marketing my service is through recommendations from existing clients, a classic example of "word of mouth" marketing, at the same time the best and most honest form of marketing. Also, for many years I was the head of an adult education program at Galbanum School, and today I act as a guest lecturer at Profokus School. Through lectures, I educate and inform participants about regulatory requirements for establishing production and placing cosmetic products on the EU market.
I also act as an external associate on the tasks of assessing the safety of cosmetic products and regulatory tasks for one foreign company.
n Are you satisfied with what you have achieved?
The past decade is full of content, fortunately, mostly of a positive nature. Those of a negative nature had an educational and pedagogical purpose, so I am extremely satisfied. At the beginning, it was only important to survive the first year of existence and work, then the second, third, etc. To experience the tenth year was a dream, a vision. From my experience, dreams come true.
n What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my own self-development and maturation of personality to which all previous experiences have contributed. I am blessed with my clients whose development I follow from their beginnings, I develop with them and try to enrich their entrepreneurial experience with my actions and contribute to positive business and life changes. We are each other's best teachers if we are willing to be taught.
