BOC TIME CAPSULE Our first Best of the Coast was published Aug. 31, 2000. We were struggling to find our way in the newspaper business, and our advertising revenue needed a shot in the arm. People warned us that reader polls were tricky, and we would probably upset more business owners than the few that won the four dozen categories. Being hardheaded, we stepped off the ledge and created what has become an annual tradition and our most popular issue. I pulled out the inaugural Best of the Coast and found that it is a perfect time capsule of Pensacola politics in 2000. Fifteen years ago, the most popular politicians were Congressman Joe Scarborough, State Representatives Dee Dee Ritchie (Davis) and Jerry Maygarden, and former State Senator W.D. Childers, who was running for the Escambia County Commission. Scarborough and his political machine had backed Republican candidates who were challenging for Superintendent of Schools and Escambia County Sheriff. Two months later, Jim Paul and Ron McNesby were swept into office along with Scarborough, who immediately had to work to win Florida's electoral votes for George W. Bush away from Al Gore. Joe is now a political pundit on NBC and hosts “Morning Joe” on MSNBC. Dee

Dee and Jerry have retired from politics but are still active in the community. Childers was found guilty of two charges of bribery and unlawful compensation in 2003 and served nearly three years of a 42-month prison sentence. The biggest scandal in 2000 involved the antics of the Escambia County School Board. Vanette Webb, who had been elected to the school board in 1996, had been removed from office in 1999 following her conviction for withholding public records. Her conviction was overturned later in the year when Judge William White ruled the state had failed to identify any specific public record that had been withheld. Webb, the darling of Luke McCoy’s “Pensacola Speaks,” was reinstated and filed to run for a second term. A week after the Best of the Coast was published, she lost in the primary, receiving only 17 percent of the votes. Linda Finkelstein would beat George White in the run-off. Webb later filed bankruptcy, claiming her legal fees forced it. She tried to get the Escambia School District to pay for her legal expenses, totaling $200,000, but the courts ruled against her. The political landscape has changed significantly since August 2000, but the events of that year set the tone for the following decade. It will be interesting to see how we look back on 2015. {in}rick@inweekly.net

ARAGON WINE MARKET

27 S. Ninth Ave., aragonwinemarket.com How long have you been in business? 7 years in October What inspired you to get started? I always loved wine but never thought that it would be my career. I had no idea how much I would love not only being in the wine business, but how much I love the day-to-day running of a store. Having great customers makes it easy and fun. How many employees do you have? It's just me and Amber Solnick. I think it's great that we have a small staff. We do have to work hard, but we really get to know our customers and their likes. How do you define being the “best”? We try hard. We might not always do everything

perfectly, but we have good intentions. And when we mess up, we take responsibility and try to make it right. What do you think sets you and your business apart? Personal service. You can buy wine anywhere these days—from the grocery to the gas station. People come to us to support a local business and to get one-onone help. Who or what inspires you to be your best? Of course our customers inspire us. Because we have personal relationships with many of them, we try hard to keep them happy. Recently we added a wine bar to the store, since we had many customers wanting to hang out and share a glass of wine. Answers by: Charlotte Gordon, Owner

of lingerie, we want it to enhance their lives in some small way. How many employees do you have? We have one amazing employee named Victoria. How do you define being the “best”? Being the best means offering our customers a shopping experience that they want to come back to time after time. In addition to our regular rotation of products, we change our decor often and want the store experience to remain exciting and new. What do you think sets you and your business apart? We carry many brands that are made in the USA, made of sustainable materials, or philanthropic in some way. It's important to us that our brands are owned by women, designed by women, and that they seek to empower women. Who or what inspires you to be your best? Seeing a person come into the store and find a style that was absolutely made for them is really inspiring. DUH FOR GARDEN AND HOME

501 N. 9th Avenue, duhpensacola.com How long have you been in business? Duh has been in business 15 years. But I suppose I have really been doing this my entire life. My father was an estate auctioneer, so I grew up in the business. What inspired you to get started? Duh began in a 1,500sf cinder block liquor store, using garden and home elements from around the world. We currently have 16,000sf of showrooms, courtyards and two restaurants. We really just wanted to create a shopping experience like no other with a fun and unpretentious atmosphere. How many employees do you have? Our needs are constantly evolving. How do you define being the “best”? I think it's generally that we have a unique selection of home decor and gifts. We strive to select the best products on the market with the best value. We really want to offer our customers something that they won't find anywhere else. What do you think sets you and your business apart? Our experience, style, creativity and a splash of the unexpected. The concept of Duh was to create a place for each individual to have an adventure for the day. We really offer everything; gifts, home decor, men's and women's clothing, items for children and pets, garden, stationery and two restaurants. Who or what inspires you to be your best? EVER’MAN COOPERATIVE GROCERY & CAFE

315 W. Garden St., everman.org How long have you been in business? From humble beginnings as a Florida notfor-profit corporation in 1973, operating out of a log cabin “to provide wholesome, nutritious food at a reasonable cost”, to completing a major expansion and remodel of its present store in 2014, Ever'man has served our community a long time. What inspired you to get started? Ever’man was founded in order for the community to have education about health, nutrition, and environmental issues; access to healthy, natural food and products at the lowest possible price; support for responsible, local agriculture and small business, and as an example of green business practices. How many employees do you have? Since its beginnings in 1973, Ever’man has grown to a work force of over 80 full time and part time staff. How do you define being the “best”? At Ever’man, our policy is to provide healthier and more nutritious alternatives to conventional offerings, while providing our community with a wide variety of foods. Our buyers use a Product Evaluation Form when bringing in new products. Items offered for sale will be expected to meet or exceed our standards. What do you think sets you and your business apart? Ever’man is dedicated to providing education to members and the community on the importance of healthy foods, environmentally-friendly products and practices, and supporting local and small businesses that provide these types of products and services. Who or what inspires you to be your best? We draw purpose from our mission; Ever’man views food as part of the chain of life with an emphasis on nutritional value and holistic health. 122 S. Palafox, shopidb.com How long have you been in business? This November, Indigeaux will be celebrating its 5th birthday. What inspired you to get started? The IDB girls have always had a passion for fashion. Five years ago, we felt Pensacola wasn't a shopping destination. We didn't want people to feel they had to travel to shop. How many employees do you have? We currently have 3 IDB stylists. How do you define being the “best”? Being the best means you strive to give the best customer service and experience. 33

MAINLINE

422 S. Palafox, mainlinearthouse.com How long have you been in business? We opened Mainline in March of 2014 after a year of planning and waiting for our space at The Artisan to be completed. What inspired you to get started? As avid travelers, Jason and I sought to bring some of our favorite experiences to downtown. We would constantly see shops filled with great products that we couldn't find at home, and we wanted to share those experiences with the folks here. How many employees do you have? Three How do you define being the “best”? In today's world, being the "best" is so often measured by who has the most likes on

Facebook or Instagram. However, for us it's more about having great customer service and offering an experience and products that you won't find anywhere else. What do you think sets you and your business apart? I think what sets Mainline apart is the approach we take to creating it. Rather than attend markets and shows, we find many of our brands and products on social media and from our customers. And rather than try to force ourselves into one genre, we've embraced several different ones. Who or what inspires you to be your best? Nothing is more inspiring than the look on a customer's face when they discover a new product or find that perfect gift they've been searching for. It's ultrarewarding to know that we've brightened someone's day and will continue to do so each time they see that product. Answers by: Mikel Traffanstead, Co-Owner and Creative Director

SOBO BOUTIQUE

518 N. 9th Ave., facebook.com/SoBoboutique How long have you been in business? October 11 will mark the one-year anniversary of us opening our doors. What inspired you to get started? I received my degree in Fashion Marketing and Management from the Savannah College of Art and Design. With my degree, I knew I wanted to one day open up a boutique, so I gained my experience by working at a boutique in the mall before venturing out on my own. How many employees do you have? At the moment we have no employees. My mother fills in or helps out occasionally. Her assistance has been invaluable. How do you define being the “best”? Being the best means providing the best customer service possible, engaging the customer and identifying their needs and likes, then turning that little bit of knowledge into a wardrobe that is tailored to fit each customer's individual style. That, to me, is being the best. What do you think sets you and your business apart? I provide personal styling for my customers. Knowing the past purchases of my repeat customers allows me to better assist them. I also try to have ever-changing store visuals and window displays to continually attract new people into my store. Who or what inspires you to be your best?

SUSAN CAMPBELL JEWELRY

420 S. Palafox, susancampbelljewelry.com How long have you been in business? 10 years in February What inspired you to get started? At that time, Pensacola was just beginning to feel the shift in young professionals, and revitalization was in the air. We just left NOLA after Katrina and felt the bubbling Pensacola energy. It was time for me to go out on my own, and it was time for Pensacola. How many employees do you have? Six lovely in-house ladies who work full and part time, two contract employees who help with writing and graphic design, two contract jewelers, and a fabulous connection with a local jeweler who does the mainstay of our trade work. It takes a village. How do you define being the “best”? Balance—for me and my employees. I need time, they need time. They also need to be active players in the business. Their opinions count, their ideas count. We work together as a team,

and I think it makes our work place the best it can be. What do you think sets you and your business apart? Our "why". We strive to bring new and different ideas to our community; to see art and design in new ways, and it is thrilling to us when a new friend "gets it". It’s fun. We have few rules (but lots of structure) and love to change it up. Who or what inspires you to be your best? First it was my Aunt Susan traveling to Africa, India and China in search of special art pieces. Then it was the amazing group of female artists and designers who now show in our Gallery. Now it is my daughter; may she blaze her own path. Answers by: Susan Campbell Hatler, Owner

WATERFRONT BARGAIN CENTERS

380 W. Herman St. (Admin. Office) waterfrontbargaincenters.org How long have you been in business? The Waterfront Bargain Centers have been in business for more than 50 years. The Waterfront Rescue Mission employs nearly 250 employees. Waterfront Bargain Centers (thrift ministry) employs nearly 200 of the total. How do you define being the “best”? Our goal is to honor our community's support by providing clean, well-stocked, high-quality goods and services. Plus, we’ve got a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Who or what inspires you to be your best? We love being a part of the Gulf Coast Community. We work here, but we also live here. What inspired you to get started? I saw a lot of photography that was either very edgy and modern or very traditional to the point of feeling stuffy. It's always been my focus to make images that straddle that line—photographs that feel modern but won't feel dated in a decade. How many employees do you have? Four, in addition to myself. Bailey is my other principal photographer and has been shooting weddings for almost three years. Within the past year, we have added three associate photographers who work in our studio, as well as photographing families and couples. How do you define being the “best”? We must provide a positive and meaningful experience, in addition to beautiful photographs. When clients tell a friend about us, or write a review, they almost always praise the experience they had working with our studio, not just the photos. That is our goal. What do you think sets you and your business apart? Our studio. For the past two years, I've worked to develop a gorgeous space in a big downtown home. We have porches with swings and rocking chairs, and an interior space that is bright, airy and modern. This summer we built a lush garden, complete with stepping stones and blooms. Who or what inspires you to be your best? Repeat clients. We meet many of our clients

as they get married, and I feel most successful when our past wedding clients trust us to photograph their growing family throughout the years. Answers by: Aislinn Kate Rehwinkel, Owner and Lead Photographer

Our attention to detail sets us

PENSACOLA MARDI GRAS

124 E Wright St., Suite B pensacolamardigras.com How long have you been in business? Over 15 years. We began as a simple group to organize one parade. Now we produce some of Pensacola's biggest free public events, like the Pelican Drop and the big free Mardi Gras events which are open to the public. What inspired you to get started? We started to have fun, and we still do. All of us love Pensacola, and we find it's so rewarding to bring so much good to the streets of downtown. Parades seem like fun, but in reality they are a bunch of work, but so worth it. How many employees do you have? Just a few. We don't have a big budget, and we

try and use all of the money we bring in to enhance the events, not make payrolls. How do you define being the “best”? In the category of "Parades", it's when both participants and spectators have fun, when they are organized and efficient, and when everyone feels welcome and feels pride in our city being on display. What do you think sets you and your business apart? The passion of the people who help and participate. So many great folks love Pensacola, and we are thrilled to provide an outlet for so many to be able to celebrate that pride. Who or what inspires you to be your best? There are so many great community organizations that inspire us daily. Knowing that Mardi Gras Krewes contribute to over 40 non-profits with money, time and attention, we feel some pride in providing an outlet that lets Pensacola caring flourish. PENSACOLA MUSEUM OF ART

for a science center to serve as a tourism destination. How many employees do you have? Six total, but about four full time How do you define being the “best”? Being the best is about exceeding expectations. It is when visitors come back, because their kids had the "best" time. It is also about imitation—when families tell us they repeated or modified the experiment at home, and when other museums or teachers copy our programs. What do you think sets you and your business apart? The MESS Hall is all about the need to "mess around" to make discoveries. Too often kids (and adults) are expected to do things "right". When visitors say, "What happens if...", we encourage them to try it, even if we know from experience it won't work. That is learning. Who or what inspires you to be your best? Our visitors and the joy they have in making their own discoveries encourages us to create new activities and programs to help them learn more and discover more. We are also inspired by stories of further exploration or family conversations sparked by an experience at the MESS Hall. Answers by: Megan Pratt, Executive Director

407 S. Jefferson St., pensacolamuseum.org How long have you been in business? 61 years What inspired you to get started? The Museum’s mission has remained true to the vision of its founders as the PMA continues to nurture the growing arts community and provide access to exhibitions that educate and inspire the next generation of artists. How many employees do you have? Six How do you define being the “best”? The PMA doesn't look at being the best as a competition. Our goal is to make the Museum a place where anyone can visit when they are looking for culture, inspiration or entertainment. What do you think sets you and your business apart? The Pensacola Museum of Art is the only accredited art museum in Pensacola. The next accredited art museums are in Mobile and Tallahassee. We provide a different type of entertainment to our community, whether it is from a traveling exhibition or our very own Permanent Collection. Who or what inspires you to be your best? Our community inspires us to be the best. We want to be around for years to come so locals and visitors alike can experience the visual arts in Pensacola.

PENSACOLA PARKS AND RECREATION

222 W. Main St., playpensacola.com How long have you been in business? I have been a recreation professional since 1992, having held positions in Wilimington, NC, Birmingham, AL and Pensacola. What inspired you to get started? My inspiration was based on my interest in officiating sports. I began officiating at the age of 18 and followed it into recreation in college. This pursuit led me to a career in recreation. How many employees do you have? 100 How do you define being the “best”? Pursuing excellence and catching it for a period of time. The longer the period of time, the more satisfying it is. What do you think sets you and your business apart? Pensacola's park system is unique because we have 93 parks, one located within a half mile of every city residence. Not many cities are this committed to making their city parks so accessible to citizens. It speaks to Pensacola’s commitment to being a great place to live, work and play. Who or what inspires you to be your best? Our Parks and Recreation staff, fellow employees and the citizens of Pensacola. Answers by: Brian Cooper, Director of Parks and Recreation

wood’s first mainstream drama to address the subject of homosexuality and coming out. It was a big step forward for the film industry—and Newton. “I remember it was a pretty big deal,” he said. “I was a young teen trying to figure out a way to watch that movie. It dealt with themes that were tragic in one way and beautiful in another.” Fast forward about 30 years later. Newton is an adult, surrounded by folks of all ages taking pictures and lining up to watch movies at the Pensacola LGBT Film Festival. Now, in its third year, it continues to present those same themes he was curious about as a kid. “I was very excited to walk into the Commons (at University of West Florida),” he said of his first time at the festival. “It felt like you were attending a premiere. Who was gay and who was not gay was irrelevant. It was a packed house, and people were taking the opportunity to learn about each other through film.”

“When we started the festival, I never imagined it would become an annual event, let alone its own nonprofit organization.” Sara Latshaw

In 2012, the film festival was born from the mind of Sara Latshaw, regional director of the ACLU of Florida, and a small group of volunteers to create an event that celebrated acceptance and education. “A lot of the focus was working together

to eradicate the stigma,” said Kimberly Brill, one of the early organizers. From volunteers to venues, it was an easy sell. “There was support from the beginning,” Brill said. “The Gay Straight Alliance at UWF has been such a force. I don’t think it would’ve been as successful without the students’ participation.” Businesses around Pensacola were all game to be a part of the inaugural event lending a night of space to the cause. “I am so proud of the community,” Brill said. “It’s so incredible to think that a young person who is questioning their identity can go sit at The East Hill Yard and watch a relatable movie…it’s life changing.” Even after the first year’s success, it was a surprise to Latshaw that the community wanted more. “When we started the festival, I never imagined it would become an annual event, let alone its own nonprofit organization,” she said. “In the past years, we have grown with a dedicated board of directors and

received much-needed support from our community.” In recent years, LGBT issues went from taboo to mainstream. After this summer, when the Supreme Court ruled same sex marriage legal in all 50 states, this year’s festival feels like a little bit of a celebration. While society has made progress, there’s still room for growth. This year has a few films that talk about transgender issues which are still relatively new in conventional media. “Take home and ponder the message behind each piece,” Brill said. “The movies humanize the issues.” Each day of the festival has a theme: You Gotta Be, Forever Young, Short Shorts (for the short films) and, At Last, which celebrates marriage equality. “We hope people come because they heard it sounds like a fun time,” he said. “It is a full festival.” Newton joined the festival’s board of directors this year. He said it’s been exciting to be working behind the scenes. As a board member, he’s helped comb through more than 100 film submissions and visit area LGBT film festivals to ensure that the event is as entertaining as it is educational. “We’ve chosen movies that are expansive in content,” he said. “They address every aspect of someone’s life. They’re coming of age…about family challenges. They’re quality films.”

PUT A STAMP ON IT

Perhaps the most notable change of the film festival this year is the new name. “To me, it doesn’t feel like a name change, rather we’re giving the festival a name,” Latshaw said. “Pensacola LGBT Film Festival describes our event. STAMPED gives the festival a name—an homage to the LGBT activists who came before us. The festival is evolving, and our new name is a part of its developing identity.” The name STAMPED comes from the 1990s phenomenon when money circulated around the Pensacola area stamped with “GAY

474 7

MONEY” in red ink in response to some city officials trying to shrug off its gay-friendly image. The story has been a local legend of sorts and has since been reported in local publications. Movie goers at STAMPED will walk away with their own branded (fake) money, which pose as movie tickets. “We were inspired by an article in InWeekly about the history of the LGBT community in Pensacola,” Latshaw said. “STAMPED film fest is a continuation of that movement. We hope that our films help promote diversity and inclusion in Pensacola just as the ‘gay money’ stamp did in days past.” As a foster parent, Newton said he has seen gay teens suffer from being bullied, which speaks to the importance of having an event where everyone is accepted. It’s beneficial for the entire community, not a select group to come out to STAMPED, show support and perhaps walk away a little more compassionate. “Bring a sister or brother—let these films speak for them in a way they cannot speak for themselves,” he said. “We would achieve our goal if people walk away more loving and considerate toward their neighbors, siblings, coworker or family member.” {in}

RETROSPECT: THE SMASHING

PUMPKINS "MELLON COLLIE & THE INFINITE SADNESS"

I don’t try to hide the fact that I’m very critical of the post-Zwan Billy Corgan and all the zaniness that has come along with him. He writes plot lines for a professional wrestling federation. He has dated Tila Tequila and Jessica Simpson. He wrote an eight-hour interpretation of Herman Hesse’s novel “Siddhartha.” He seems wretchedly depressed on Disney rides. Corgan only seems to get stranger by the day, and the decline has dragged an illustrious legacy through the mud. However, it’s important to remember that through all of his wacky antics and

fan bullying on social media, Billy Corgan penned my favorite album of all time. This month marks the 20th anniversary of the release of “Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness,” the extremely ambitious double album from the Smashing Pumpkins’ perfect and original line up of Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlain, James Iha, and D’arcy. At fourteen when I got my first copy (I’m now on my eighth), I remember thinking of “Mellon Collie” as monumental and more than I had ever heard in my entire life. Some songs made me embrace my teenage angst (‘Muzzle,’ ‘Tales of a Scorched Earth’), while others gave me a sense of peace (‘Porcelina of the Vast Oceans,’ ‘Stumbleine’), while still others made me feel extremely alive (my favorite song ever written ‘Tonight, Tonight). This album shaped my musical scope in the way that no other had and no other would. Not only was “Mellon Collie” a life-changing album for me, my mom took me to see The Smashing Pumpkins play these songs live, and I knew that night that I wanted to constantly surround myself with music. I’ve lived up to it so far. My love for The Smashing Pumpkins will always stick with me. They introduced me to worlds of other music by writing songs that were commercial enough to make it on the radio, but oddball enough to be artistic. It’s nearly difficult to look at today’s Billy Corgan and remember that he wrote “Gish” and “Pisces Iscariot”

and “Siamese Dream,” let alone this masterpiece, but the truth remains that his genius exploded in the ‘90s and then waned throughout the beginning of the 21st century. It’s a sad, albeit funny, story, and it still stings that I feel the need to be so critical of a musician who means so much to me, but there is so much of me that just wants him to be great again. Maybe it’s unfair, but I can only handle so much. At the very least, I will always have “Mellon Collie” and the way it continues to make me feel, as though stuck in a moment of time that won’t move at all. “Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness” has been out for twenty years via Virgin Records.

TRACK OF THE WEEK:

Wavves 'Pony'

Wavves will always hold a special spot in my heart. About two and a half years ago, they released “Afraid of Heights,” and a young album reviewer first got his feet wet by giving his two cents on it. Now he has gotten older and Wavves have gotten wiser, as they released track after track from their recent album, “V.” ‘Pony’ exudes the pop-punk essence and ‘devil-may-care’ attitude that have made Wavves such a popular band from their beginning and added cred to their art. Check out ‘Pony’ wherever you stream music and pick up “V,” which is out now via Warner Bros Records. {in}

Toro y Moi Mixes It Up

These days, an evolving sound makes it difficult to place any sort of label on musician Chaz Bundick of Toro y Moi, and he prefers it that way. But back in 2010 when then-23-year-old Bundick released his first album “Causers of This,” a label stuck that has just now started to peel away. What began as a parody of a scene started by satirical music blog Hipster Runoff, “chillwave” became synonymous with his work. Characterized by heavy use of synthesiz-

ers, loop pedals and sampling, the “chillwave” moniker stuck, and Toro y Moi was put in a box he wasn’t necessarily trying to fit into. “I was already moving on when I finished that first album, and I knew I didn’t want to stick with that sound,” Bundick said via phone interview. “I’m not opposed to it. It’s cool to be associated with that because it helped me get to where I am today.” Fast forward five years and Bundick has four albums under his belt, transitioning his sound with each record. Bundick is currently on tour supporting his latest album, “What For?” and surprise mixtape “Samantha.” The collection of ambient beats and trap-influenced tracks of “Samantha” was released for free online this summer and includes collaborations with Washed Out, Rome Fortune and Kool A.D. Some of the tracks were recorded as far back as 2012, but Bundick said that he was waiting for the right moment to release the collection. “Samantha’ is a project that I’ve been working on for about a year,” Bundick said. “I decided I wanted to release some stuff

He put the synthesizers on While Toro y Moi’s debut record was a selfthe back burner to produce a guitar-driven professed break-up album, Bundick said that repertoire of 70s-inspired rock grooves. “What For?” is more optimistic. “I wanted to make a guitar album,” “It sounds a lot less dark and murky than Bundick said. “I was trying to make an ala lot of my other stuff has,” he said. “I thought bum that still segued into that sound nicely it would be fun to make more of an uplifting without it being too drastic of a change.” Toro y Moi will be playing at Vinyl Music album.” Being a guitar-centric record, Bundick said Hall with opening act Astronauts, etc., or that he’s happy with how it’s translated live. news of the weird PROTECTING OUR FREEDOMS The bold, shameless leering of David Zaitzeff is legendary around Seattle's parks, and more so since he filed a civil complaint against the city in September challenging its antivoyeurism law for placing a "chilling effect" on his photography of immodestly dressed women in public. Though he has never been charged with a crime, he roams freely (and apparently joyously) around short- skirted and swimsuit-clad "gals" while himself often wearing only a thong and bearing a "Free Hugs and Kisses" sign. Zaitzeff's websites "extol" public nudity, wrote the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and explain, for example, that a woman who angles her "bod" to offer a view of "side boob" is fair game for his camera. Zaitzeff's complaint —that the law criminalizes photography of a person's "intimate areas" (clothed or not) without explicit permission—is distressing him. DEMOCRACY BLUES Randy Richardson, 42, vying unopposed for the Riceville, Iowa, school board (having agreed to run just because he has two kids in school) failed to get any votes at all—as even he was too busy on election day (Sept. 8) to make it to the polls (nor were there any write-ins). To resolve the 0-0 result, the other board members simply appointed Richardson to the office. Riceville, near the Minnesota border, is a big-time farming community, and registered voters queried by The Des Moines Register said they just had too much fieldwork to do that day. MEDICAL MARVELS Researchers recently came upon a small community (not named) in the Dominican Republic with an unusual incidence of adolescent boys having spent the first decade or so of their lives as girls because their penises and testes did not appear until puberty. A September BBC News dispatch referred to the boys as "Guevedoces" and credited the community for alerting researchers, who ultimately developed a drug to replace the culprit enzyme whose absence was causing the problem. (The full shot of testoster-

one that should have been delivered in the mother's womb was not arriving until puberty.) LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS The serpentine queue extended for blocks in September in Lucknow, India, after the state government of Uttar Pradesh announced 368 job openings (almost all menial)—eventually resulting in about 2.3 million applications, 200,000 from people with advanced degrees (even though the $240/month positions required only a fifthgrade education, according to an Associated Press dispatch). About 13 million young people enter India's job market each year. NEW WORLD ORDER At a September convention on ethical issues involving computers, a researcher at Britain's De Montfort University decried the development of devices that might permit humanrobot sex. Though no human would be "victimized," the researcher warned that such machines (some already in service) will exacerbate existing "power imbalances" between men and women and pave the way for more human exploitation. One critic challenged, offering that such robots would be no more demeaning to women than, say, vibrators. However, the researcher ominously warned that there may someday be robots resembling children, marketed for sex. (A September USA Today dispatch from Tokyo reported that the company SoftBank had banned sex, via its user agreement, with its new 4-foot-tall humanlike robot—even though "Pepper" features nothing resembling genitalia.) {in}
