Services BEAUTIFUL VERSATILITY
“You name it, we have hosted it,” says Mary Price, Manager at 5 Eleven Palafox—and hosted it well. “The building and patio are already so beautiful there is no need for much decoration,” says Price, who believes the space’s best features lie in its historic architectural elements, naming its large windows that provide natural lighting and French doors that open onto a private garden courtyard as the space’s notable draws, particularly for wedding ceremonies and receptions. “Our brides love to have their ceremony in our private garden courtyard and then come inside for a beautiful reception. We also offer a side lawn perfect for tenting large parties,” Price states, noting that the options for both indoor and outdoor arrangements apply to any event. “5 Eleven is a great place to celebrate birthdays, rehearsal dinners, anniversaries, Christmas parties, graduations, and any type of office meeting or party.” 511 S. YOUR FRAME IN MIND
Whether you’ve finally gotten your hands on that one-of-a-kind painting from your
favorite artist or have a poster you just can’t quite bear to keep rolled up and out of sight, Aiken
Picture Frames South Inc. has a
frame for you. “The multidensity fiberboard is the most popular, especially the 1 ¼ inch flat black. It goes with any artwork or photograph,” says owner Arlene Aiken. And their frames, custom cut and ranging from ornate to simple, are seriously built to last. “Most of the styrene mouldings survived Ivan. When the artwork was replaced, the frames were fine and able to be rehung,” she says. And while their highly skilled staff gladly tackles the challenge of framing anything—from military retirement boxes to signed jerseys to a piece of sod from Wrigley Field—framing kids’ art is particularly meaningful, says Aiken. “Just to see the proud, excited expression on a young artist’s face when their artwork is framed and ready to hang is priceless.” And that’s not all. “Our newest endeavor includes sublimation printing. Bring in a flash drive with an image or a photograph and we can transfer it to a gift item.” 15 Brent Lane, aikenpictureframes.com
A KEEN EYE
Flexibility is helpful in most situations, and as Aislinn Kate, owner and primary photographer at Aislinn Kate Photography, has found, especially in photography. “We challenge ourselves to attempt one new idea at every single shoot. In this way, we have perfected many unusual techniques that our clients love,” says Kate, who cites a rainy-day wedding last winter, in which she used the rain rather than hide from it as a prime example. “The result is the most gorgeous and unique photo of the couple dancing in the street, while the raindrops glisten and glow all around them.” Kate and associate photographer Bailey Dowdle balance directing shoots—be it weddings or family portraits—with capturing fleeting moments. “We focus on keeping our attention on our clients, even when we are not actively shooting, so that we don’t miss these moments. This is true of weddings, children, families and even professional headshots,” Kate says. “We certainly still pose and direct our clients, but sometimes the best photographs happen in the seconds in between poses.” 205 Cevallos St., aislinnkate.com
FIT AROUND THE CLOCK Anytime Fitness Downtown owner
and operator Chris Herr, along with a team of personal trainers, are whipping Pensacolians into shape, and judging by the votes, those people love not only the results, but also the gym itself. As a local outlet of “the world’s largest 24-hour gym and co-ed fitness center chain,” Anytime Fitness provides members access to the gym around the clock as well as the chance to work with personal trainers on staff. Trainer Lorenzo Aguilar exemplifies what the gym strives for in client service, according to Herr. “Lorenzo's knowledge, attention to detail and willingness to help people makes him successful and popular with clients. He spends a lot of time studying his craft. He is a true professional.” The staff also works to keep motivation running high. “We all have positive attitudes and bring our ‘A’ game every day. The first thing people say when they walk in the front door is that they feel amazing energy,” says Herr. 100 S. Alcaniz, anytimefitness.com

Services from its talented artists and its unique, all-volunteer supported organization, is its continued mission to grow in innovative and often unexpected ways. “Many people are introduced to Artel during a Gallery Night,” says President Suzanne Robbert. “It’s fun to walk into Artel during that party atmosphere, but several enjoy coming back during the quiet times to study each piece.” Their ongoing collaborations with other organizations and frequent exhibits that inspire artists to think outside of the box are what keep people coming back to this experimental art gallery. “Most recently, we teamed up with TAG at UWF to bring 3D projection to Pensacola during ACE’s Foo Foo Festival in November. It’s very difficult to describe this type of projection, because not too many people have experienced it in person. These types of projections are usually done in big cities, and we’re beyond thrilled to bring it to Pensacola,” says Robbert. “Palafox has grown significantly the past few years, and while we get to benefit from the increased foot traffic, we also like to think that our presence has contributed to the growth of downtown.” 223 S. NATIONAL FIRM WITH LOCAL ROOTS
Aylstock, Witkin, Kreis & Overholtz may handle some of the biggest
cases in the United States, but they are still a firm dedicated to its locals. "We bring all of the expertise, technology, experience and resources needed to fight and win those battles on the national stage, and put it to work for our local clients," says Partner Justin Witkin. As one of the largest, local personal injury law firms, Aylstock, Witkin, Kreis & Overholtz has the necessary attorneys and staff to efficiently move clients’ claims as quickly as possible, Witkin adds. Outside of the courtroom, the law firm is dedicated to engaging with the community through the AWKO Justice Foundation, which strives to sponsor a few events each month to raise awareness and generate support for local issues. While actively soliciting staff members to identify opportunities for community support, Witkin says they invite suggestions from the community. 17 E. Main St., Suite 200, awkolaw.com
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE
Respect, compassion and honesty are the key values Pensacola native Autumn O. Beck upholds to frame interactions with her clients during their difficult marital or life events. “No question, the most rewarding part of my job is the relationships that develop between my clients and me,” she says. October 2, 2014
“It is a challenge to help people who are navigating sometimes the most difficult time in their lives in a way in which they can feel good about their choices, help regain a sense of control over their personal lives or help their children achieve stability. When a client thanks me for not only my legal representation in their case, but for supporting them emotionally, it makes every late night call or text message worth it.” Her integrity and concern for others has earned her such respect in the community that she was asked to join the boards for local non-profits Favor House and Pensacola Little Theatre. “They deserve that my practice and community involvement reflect the values that I promote to my clients,” Beck says. “It’s a responsibility I take seriously.” 127 S. Palafox, Suite 100
FIND YOUR CENTER
“We strive to have our yoga classes include and serve as much of the community as possible, and we currently offer a wide range of classes for every level of student,” explains Stacey Vann of Breathe Yoga and Wellness Center. Vann, Christa Parent and Tara Taylor purchased Breathe in 2013 from founder Sandra Sanford and have worked since then to accommodate beginners, seasoned practitioners, children and even those with injuries through classes like kid’s yoga, chair yoga, beginner yoga, hot yoga and many more. The studio has even introduced a growing fitness trend, aerial yoga, which incorporates “yoga swings” to enhance and deepen traditional yoga postures. The women have also recently opened an office on Government Street, where they will provide even more wellness service offerings such as massage therapy, life coaching and essential oil education. “Part of our mission involves providing the community with services and opportunities to enhance their well-being, and we continue to seek out supportive and innovative ways to do this,” Vann states. 505 S. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Let’s face it. Buying or selling a home isn’t exactly an easy, everyday occurrence for most of us. Luckily, you can entrust the professional realtors at Coldwell Banker United, Realtors ® to make the transition and transaction easier. “While a large part of our business comes from relocating the military and corporate moves,” says Director of Marketing Connie Lewis, “the very essence of our success has been built on our relationships with customers making local moves and then referring our services to others. Community 45
Services support is a gift we don’t take for granted.” Although about to unveil new online technologies to better improve real estate searches and researching, Lewis notes the real key to their success has been word of mouth combined with a great locale. “We have the good fortune of being in an area with community leaders constantly looking to the future and to creating a relevant and competitive setting for both commerce and lifestyle to flourish,” says Lewis. “Adding to this incredible package are great schools, sports and entertainment venues, and vast and beautiful landscapes, which make an excellent backdrop for selling real estate.” 4475 Bayou Blvd., cbunited.com/pensacola
FEEL GOOD FOOD
Not too far from the Community Maritme Park, the kitchen at Culinary Productions, Inc. is usually buzzing, preparing delicious meals for the company’s projects. “We've catered as small as a private dinner for two on Valentine's Day to 1,000 guests at a holiday work party,” says Raela Marie Villanueva, Culinary Productions’ Marketing and Events Coordinator. “All of the menu ideas come from a collaboration of ideas between Mike and Dave,” Villanueva explains, referring to owner and operator Mike DeSorbo and head chef and artist Dave Bain, both of whom focus on catering menus that provide “simple elegance.” The team recently developed a menu for O'Riley's Irish Pub downtown and is planning a Gourmet Dinner Night tied into the caterer’s 10th anniversary celebration. Each Gourmet Dinner Night event has a theme, which the team chooses, along with a charity to support. “We typically like to choose the ‘underdog’ charities, those who do not receive a lot of attention or funding,” says Villanueva of the events. “It's a fun night for a good cause.” And we’ve heard the food is pretty good, too. 700 W. TEAM WORK IS BEAUTIFUL
According to Eimaj Spa, Esthetics, & Hair Studio owner Lydia Nixon, “Being salon and spa professionals is about making people happy, period.” Nixon would know, as she and the team at Eimaj are consistently recognized as one of Pensacola’s most preferred salons for all occasions, be it weddings, massage, waxing, and more. “Seeing our guests smiling as they leave is the best feeling and compliment ever,” says Nixon, who describes the salon as “a small, intimate space” where the team strives to make each guest feel at home. “Our guests are like our extended family, and we treat them as we would each other,” Nixon says and explains, “We cheer, encourage and support each other in everything we do.” The notion of the team is key to Nixon, who says that every member of the Eimaj group contributes to the salon and spa’s continued success. “We are always changing and developing our team activities to stay creative and passionate about our work. It's all about balance,” says Nixon, who adds that guests are in fact part of the team, too. “We build a relationship with each and every guest because they drive us every day to be the best we can be. They give us the creative passion.” 1506 W. Garden St.
JUST RELAX
Everyone is prone to getting worn down by the daily grind. Luckily for even the most world-weary, Escape Wellness Spa has a host of services to relax and rejuvenate. “Our massage is the best because our therapists are knowledgeable, and we absolutely love what we do,” says owner Stephanie Knight. “You can’t beat massage for relaxation. And body waxing can sting a little but our professionals help you feel relaxed, comfortable and have it done in no time,” she says. To complete the package, don’t forget the facial. “Your face is how you present yourself to the world,” Knight
continues. “You don’t need a long list of products to achieve the results you are looking for.” Escape Wellness Spa is committed to their clients’ total-body well-being, encouraging them to treat themselves at home. “They often come in very stressed and in pain, but they leave transformed and inspired to take better care of themselves.” 4400 Bayou Blvd. #24, escapeandfeelbetter.com
CROSS-POLLINATING CREATIVITY
At local floral haven Fiore , a creative vision is always budding. “The team at Fiore takes each client’s hand and walks them through the field of flowers that awaits them,” says owner and creator Shannon Pallin. She applauds her Fiore team as talented, smart, responsive, connected, super creative, crazy funny, organized and awesome, all of which enable them to pour a diverse range of talent and enthusiasm into each floral-driven project they take on. Still, the Fiore vision spans beyond flowers. “Vision and styling are an innate skill at Fiore. We have the gift to literally see all of the parts come together as one, whether it is a wedding or an arrangement,” says Pallin. “We draw in the elements from every detail of the day to create something that is uniquely yours.” Fiore’s recent move to Main Street has only helped promote further growth. “We now have the space to showcase all of the talents that this city has to offer,” says Pallin. “Our marketing campaign has been that we are ‘crosspollinating’ with many creative outlets that complement our mission.” Plus, the new space means there is room to stock handcrafted French macaroons by Sucré. 15 W. Main St., fioreofpensacola.com
PICTURE PERFECT
When you think of going to the orthodontist, visits beyond the mandatory and obligatory are probably the last thing to
come to mind, but that’s not the case for Dr. Ben H. Fishbein and his patients at Austin & Fishbein Orthodontics. “The relationships we have built with our patients are so strong, many visit us after their orthodontic treatment is completed.” It’s no surprise, as Fishbein takes pride not just in creating stellar smiles for his patients but also in the joy that it brings them. “We get excited when past patients send in their senior portraits or even wedding photos thanking us for their beautiful smile.” Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that they maintain Board Certification status, offer a complimentary consultation, and keep on top of the latest and greatest technology in orthodontics like Invisalign and Incognito (behind the teeth braces) to keep their clients happy. Ultimately, Fishbein believes that their success is “all about the relationships and trust we are able to build with our patients and their families. There is no greater compliment to our practice then our current patients referring their friends and family to us. We are fortunate to see this a lot.” 4900 Market Place Rd., emeraldcoastbraces.com
GET ON BOARD
“If someone is hesitant about trying for the first time, I tell them the worst that can happen is they get wet,” says Cindi Bonner, Founder and CEO at Fitness Onboard. In late 2010, Bonner brought the first stand up paddleboarding (SUP) business to the region, and new devotees have followed steadily since. “We will accommodate any group to help people get up, get outside and start moving, and to help grow the sport of SUP,” Bonner says of Fitness Onboard’s classes on Little Sabine Bay, which include Pilates, yoga, and “Mommy and Me” offerings. “They end up having a blast on the water, never realizing the health benefits they are receiving within just one single class—major muscle groups are used from head to toe.” As a cross training exercise,

Services Bonner assures that SUP is for all ages, providing students are able to tread water. Bonner credits her instructors for facilitating fun, effective, non-intimidating workouts. “They want to spread their knowledge for health and fitness with the drive to help others achieve their overall goal to better their quality of life.” 360 Fort Pickens Rd., fitnessonboard.com
BOOTCAMP BODIES
“Our goal has always been that no client ever feels like a number in a large group,” says Kenzie Presnell of Fixed on Fitness, which offers classes at Bayview Park in Pensacola, Perdido, and Pace, and prides itself on its personalized approach for bootcampers, ages currently ranging from 15 to 68. Presnell and husband Josh own Fixed on Fitness and serve as trainers along with Troy Ulshoeffer. “Troy is an incredibly motivating trainer, and he is truly a genuine person. He cares deeply about each client, and I believe that his clients can see that,” says Presnell. And while the term “bootcamp” may sound intimidating to some, at Fixed on Fitness it couldn’t be further from that, Presnell assures. “We are all there for each other, celebrating the accomplishments of each person within the Fixed on Fitness community,” she said. Presnell describes one more perk of exercising in the great wide open: “You get to see the sun come up every morning over the bayou or watch the sun go down as you finish your last run—I can't imagine a better place to workout.” fixedonfitness.com
THINKING BEYOND THE BANK
With their motto “Service That Soars Above” and a logo depicting a bird riding the winds, it’s fitting that Gulf Winds Federal Credit Union’s success is flying high. “We really do have the best loan rates and best savings rates in Pensacola and the surrounding areas,” says Marketing Director Kurt
Stenerson. “We are able to offer this savings advantage to our team because we have created an efficiently run organization with an emphasis on giving back to our members.” So how does Gulf Winds create such a breath of fresh air in the workplace? A major part of their strategy is ensuring their employees love what they do every day. “The happiness of our team is of paramount importance,” says Stenerson. “We work hard on behalf of our team to provide fair compensation, excellent benefits and an atmosphere of accountability and team.” Their focus on people extends beyond typical banking services. For instance, after the recent flood, Gulf Winds sponsored a matching fund to help Manna Food Pantries’ recovery, generating over $140,000. “Our involvement in the community continues to set us apart,” says Stenerson. 220 E. Nine Mile Rd., gogulfwinds.com
THE HOUSE THAT TALENT BUILT
Open since 2000, Hula Moon Tattoo Studio has built a reputation for quality work. “We can accommodate almost any request or style of tattooing,” states shop manager and piercing artist Ed McCarthy, who explains explains that Hula Moon pretty much has the bases covered artistically when it comes to client requests. “We run our shop as an art co-op, so anyone who wants to work here at Hula Moon has to be voted in unanimously by the other artists who already work here—all talented and skilled tattooers, but with different styles and personalities to cater to the clients,” McCarthy says. Judging by the votes, the personalities and skills at the shop are evidently well-regarded, as clients also voted Gabe, a.k.a. “Famous Gabe,” Smith, who owns and operates Hula Moon, the Best Tattoo Artist, and Hula Moon’s Jesse Huggins was a runner up in that category. Sounds like reason enough to check Hula Moon out if you haven't already. 473 N. Pace Blvd., hulamoontattoo.com
A PRESCRIPTION FOR HEALTH
Healthcare is one of life’s inevitabilities, and choosing the right doctor can make a world of difference when you’re sick or hurt. For Dr. Lanway H. Ling , how he treats his patients is what keeps them coming back. “We try to facilitate a close relationship with our patients,” he says. “I think of how I would like to be treated as a patient and aim for that. And little things, like keeping the office clean and smelling good, having interesting reading material, a good cup of coffee—those all add up.” Of course, there’s more to providing top-notch care than a relaxed atmosphere. To keep his knowledge current, Dr. Ling consults with colleagues, attends seminars, and does research on the Internet and in journals he receives daily. Oh, and let’s not forget TV. “I learn quite a bit from watching television,” he says. “That way I can hopefully understand what my patients are talking about when they come in and ask about what they heard on CNN or Dr. Oz last night. The more we can understand about each other, the better our outcomes usually are.” 3298 Summit Blvd., #39
A CULTURE OF DEDICATION
Over 100 agents serving Pensacola, Cantonment, Pace, Milton, Pensacola Beach and the surrounding areas may sound like a lot for one business to handle, but the culture at Main Street Properties is one of dedication “to their mission, vision, values and beliefs,” ensuring everything runs smoothly for clients when buying or selling a home. “We simply get up every morning, we don’t make excuses, we love what we do, and we expect nothing but the best from ourselves,” says premier real estate agent Skip Geiser. “We strive to keep on top of all the current trends, which ultimately empowers our clients in making wise decisions concerning buying, selling and investing.” Geiser’s honest, customer-
focused approach garners him high praise from clients. “Much of my real estate business is referral-based. It is humbling and motivating that those who know me are comfortable referring me to their friends and family.” With his strong set of values, it’s no wonder so many chose Geiser to be their real estate agent. “There is no magic or luck required. What is required is commitment, responsibility, hard work, a positive attitude and the mindset that anything short of excellence is unacceptable.” 1313 Creighton Rd., mainstreetproperty.com
EVERLASTING ABHAYA
Longtime yogi Nancy LaNasa may have closed the doors of her beloved studio Abhaya Yoga Center last fall, but she continues to keep her 30 years of yoga flow in motion. “Now that I don't have to be at my own center daily to oversee things, I have developed more of a ‘home’ practice— practicing by myself or with my students at my home studio, Abhaya Above,” she says. The cozy Abhaya Above space serves as a haven for long-time students of LaNasa’s. “It's surrounded by trees and is very green, and when we meditate there is always birdsong and frog music from outside,” she says. “Several of the students have asked if they could live up there.” In addition to Abhaya Above, LaNasa is an integral part of Breathe Yoga Studio, where she regularly teaches classes. In addition, she conducts private sessions and will be a part of this year’s Mahabhuta Yoga Festival. LaNasa continues to inspire the area yoga community with her teaching, while reaping benefits and inspiration through her own practice. “Yoga keeps me moving, feeling fit and youthful, and I have met so many wonderful people because of it,” says LaNasa. “I have terrific teachers here in the area as well—not asana teachers but spiritual teachers, and I turn to them constantly for guidance.” Ultimately, for LaNasa, "all life is yoga." 505 S. Services BACK TO HEALTH

SOLUTION SEEKERS
A rich history. A solid reputation. A community-oriented spirit. These are a few of the attributes of the largest local credit union headquartered in Pensacola, Pen Air Federal Credit Union. “Pen Air FCU holds fast to its mission of ‘Enhancing lives through exceptional service, strength and financial solutions,’” says Patty Veal, Director of Public Relations. Pen Air FCU prides itself on being community-driven, both inside and out. “Pen Air FCU’s work environment is a collaborative atmosphere that encourages input at all levels within the organization,” says Veal. “Being part of the Pen Air FCU team is being part of an organization that cares for its staff and the people that walk through its doors.” On the other side of the counter, Pen Air FCU extends the same stability to its members, truly offering individuals a sense of belonging. According to Veal, beyond all else, the staff members pride themselves on being solution seekers. “One advantage of belonging to Pen Air FCU is the personal service and the knowledgeable staff who are dedicated to finding solutions,” she says. 1495 E. PERSONALIZED MEDICINE
“Our pharmacy offers unmatched customer service,” said Chris Schulte, president and CEO of Pensacola Apothecary. “We offer services that ‘big box’ stores and other independent pharmacies do not offer, such as high-quality, pharmaceutical-grade vitamins, preventative medicine consultations and compounded medications,” said Schulte. The apothecary’s pharmacists, in consultation with physicians and patients, customize prescriptions through methods originally used before pre-manufactured forms became common. The pharmacy offers compounding services for dermatology, pain management, veterinary, wound care and many more. The method of prescription delivery, dosage forms, strengths, flavors and formulas can all be adjusted to meet individual patient needs.

WALK-IN HEALTHCARE
With locations in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze, ProClinic has become a local favorite for straightforward medical care. “We will go over prices with our patients before any service is rendered so that they will know what to expect to pay,” says Krissy Greenleaf-Robertson, Marketing Manager for ProClinic. “We are able to charge less than many urgent care or walk-in clinics because we do not accept insurance. By cutting out the middle man, we are able to pass the savings along to our patients,” Greenleaf-Robertson states, adding that at $59 per office visit, ProClinic’s rates are among some of the most competitive in town. Patients can walk in or have the option of making an appointment for care for a range of issues, from a sore throat and fever to depression to women’s health, and many others, and they can expect a follow-up call from staff after a visit. Membership programs for individuals, families and businesses are also available. 3101 N. 12th Ave., proclinicfl.com
WHOLE BODY FITNESS
Just two years after the opening of its Gulf Breeze location, Pure Pilates now has a second studio located downtown. “When the thought of opening Pure Pilates in the Artisan building was presented to us, it was too exciting of an opportunity to pass up,” says Susan Clark, owner and trainer. “The desire to live healthy is evident within our community, and we look forward to continuing to help facilitate that lifestyle.” The expansion into downtown allows Pure Pilates to have two locations, each with its own atmosphere, offering many of the same or similar classes with the intended outcomes of relaxation, strengthening, familiarity and warmth. “We designed Pure Pilates in Gulf
Breeze to give the feeling as if you were walking into a spa, whereas at our downtown location we wanted to include the ambiance of the century-old building,” says Clark. However, the goals of both locations remain the same. “Pilates creates strength without bulk, increases flexibility, provides wholebody fitness while developing core strength, improves posture and is adaptable to any fitness level or need,” says Clark. Still, Pure Pilates offers other classes including yoga, Kangoo Jumps classes, TRX, Aerial Movement and Barre. Drop-ins are welcome, and the first class you attend is complimentary. 426 S. THE MORE THINGS CHANGE…
“Our aim is to create a holistic approach that supports the needs and preferences of the individual and family,” says Henry Stovall, president of Sacred Heart Hospital. Sacred Heart, in addition to keeping up with changes in healthcare including shifts to electronic medical records and online communications with patients, also recently completed construction of its five-story Bayou Tower with critical-care and cardiology units and a Joint Replacement Center. The hospital is keeping up with technology as well. “With a focus on improving patient outcomes, we have added new imaging technologies to improve our ability to detect breast cancer, lung cancer and heart disease at an early stage, when they are most treatable,” says Stovall of just a few of the recently implemented new tools. Even with the changes, however, the hospital’s mission remains true to its roots. “Sacred Heart’s philosophy of care is driven by the mission that the Daughters of Charity brought to Pensacola almost 100 years ago,” Stovall comments. “Our Catholic health ministry is dedicated to spiritually-centered care that sustains and improves the health of individuals and the communities we serve.” 5151 N. 9th Ave., sacred-heart.org

MORE THAN A CATCHY SONG
The YMCA—or the Y to most folks—is more than a gym, says Rachel Mock, wellness director at the Downtown YMCA. "We're a causedriven organization that meets community needs and recognizes that every individual person is unique and should be treated as an individual," adds Mock. With friendly personal trainers and gym staff, the YMCA is a gym that you don't have to dread going to. "We make it a priority to know our members personally and develop real relationships," says Mock. With a variety of fitness classes, you'll never suffer from gym boredom, and it's a great way to make new friends. "People want to have options when it comes to their health and fitness," Mock says. "Group fitness is a great way to meet new people and offers a fun and unique way to break a sweat." Most importantly, the Y strives to help people reach their fitness goals. "We encourage and motivate our members to reach for their very best," Mock said. 410 N. Palafox, ymcanwfl.org

MIX MASTERS
If you need music for a wedding reception or other big event, please don’t subject the guests to your poorly amplified iTunes selections on repeat. At least not when the masters at AnyDayDJ can provide your entertainment. “We give our clients both a performance and experience,” says founder and DJ Ramsey Coates, a.k.a. DJ Ram-Z. But that requires more than just having an eclectic library of songs. “It helps to have a lot of experience as a DJ and music fan to know what will and what won’t work,” he says. But don’t be afraid to request your favorites either. “I will never forget the time when the father of the bride came up to me and asked if I could play “Bangarang” by Skrillex. I loved that he not only knew the song but proceeded to tell me how much he loved it.” Although AnyDayDJ loves to work different types of events, Coates says weddings are his favorite by far because he gets to help make his client’s special day one of the most memorable ever. “There aren’t too many things that are better than that.” 130 S. Palafox (Inside The Wedding Studio), anydaydj.com
THE PERFECT DRESS
Choosing a wedding gown can be one of the most stressful aspects of a wedding for a bride. Fortunately for brides shopping at Pensacola’s The Bridal Loft, Brenda Carraway and her team are there to help. “We attend national bridal markets and utilize magazines, web sites and any information through seminars that builds a strong and knowledgeable team,” says Carraway. The Bridal Loft also participates in the broader bridal community by coordinating Brides Night at the Hilton and publishing “Coastal Weddings” magazine. Perhaps their largest undertaking is organizing the Beautiful Beginnings Bridal Expo, now in its 12th year, which typically draws over 1,100 brides and guests. “The expo provides a platform for over 100 wedding consultants to showcase their businesses to newly engaged couples,” says Carraway, noting that no matter how many times they see it, she and her team still take joy in connecting brides with the perfect dress. “Something magical happens when a bride finds the dress. Smiling, tears of joy, sharing the moment with family and close friends. We feel so fortunate to take part in such special moments.” 4400 Bayou Blvd., Suite 48, pensacolabridalloft.com

HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO
“I'm a total cake nerd. I think about cake designs and flavors twenty-four-seven, and I love seeing others’ creativity, too,” says Betty Weber, owner of Betty Weber Cakes. After baking for years, Weber says demand for her designer cakes increased so much she decided to turn her hobby into a business. “A cake consultation is full of excitement and creativity,” explains Weber, whose portfolio includes cakes shaped like dogs, purses, pizza pies and much more. One of her “Chocolate LaCream” wedding cakes recently went to Emeril Lagasse's NOLA Restaurant in New Orleans, and the celebrity chef himself gave it a try. “He told them he loved it, and gave it the thumbs up in a photo for me. Also, because of that photo, another chef who works for a chef on the Food Network contacted me and asked if his pastry chef could work with me,” Weber reports, adding, “Life is sweet and good!” facebook. com/bettywebercakes October 2, 2014
FOODIE COMFORT
It’s no surprise that Classic City Catering doesn’t have a problem receiving compliments from their clients (the somewhat prophetic “Best wedding food ever!” is among their favorites). Constantly drawing inspiration for their dishes from their favorite restaurants, colleagues, cookbooks and magazines, the chefs at Classic City Catering keep their menu fresh and unique. “We make everything from scratch and fully prepare our food on-site to ensure the quality and presentation,” says Catering Sales Manager Lauren McManus. But what good is the grub without first-class service? Classic City Catering has it all covered, so your mind can be on other things for your catered event. “Based on our experience, our clients can relax knowing that we have everything under control. We have been in business for 25 years, and we love what we do,” McManus says. 214 W. Intendencia St., classiccitycatering.com

Weddings PERSONAL TOUCH
Gent's Formal Wear first opened in
Pensacola in 1980 at the main entrance of Cordova Mall and moved to its downtown location in 1990. “I guess we were ahead of our time,” said owner Richard Crenshaw. “Now everybody wants to be downtown.” Today’s customers have more choices than ever before. “The only way to beat the national chains is by offering superior customer service.” he said "This is something we specialize in.” Gent's also carries the latest styles and designers like Calvin Klein, Chaps, Perry Ellis and, coming in January, Michael Kors tuxedos. "Because we are downtown, we are like the Mardi Gras Tuxedo headquarters for Pensacola and we have so many VIP customers that work downtown, we are more convenient than going to the mall,” said Crenshaw. And their popularity is not just a fluke. "It must say something about how much we care for our customers.” 400 E. Wright St. gentsformalwear.com
RIDE IN STYLE
Eco-friendly and unique, Gulf Coast Pedicabs will not only get you where you need to go, but it’s fun, too. "We are proudly the only pedicab company in the area," says
656 5
Owner Nick Sexton. "We are a one-of-a-kind business." Serving the downtown Pensacola and Pensacola Beach areas, Gulf Coast Pedicabs is clearly a great choice for wedding party transportation. "We add so much to the wedding experience," says Sexton. "We offer a special opportunity of short-term stardom for couples. As we ride through downtown or the beach, many 'Hoorays' and 'Congratulations' and 'Well Wishes' are shouted from locals to the newlyweds." Often pedicabs are requested for the bride and groom's grand exit. You can secure flat rates ahead of time and even secure specific pedicabs for your special day. "We do getaways as surprises, too," Sexton says. "This can be a great wedding gift for the couple." gulfcoastpedicab.com
SHOW YOUR STORY
Wedding decorations and accents should be all about telling the couple’s story, believes Angela Haley, owner and designer at Hemstitch Vintage Rentals. “Our clients are stylish brides looking to do something a little different for their wedding. They want the antique typewriter for their guestbook because the bride was an English major and loves writing,
not just because she saw it on a wedding blog a few months ago.” Whether you’re leaning chic or boho, be prepared, as you’ll easily spend hours browsing through their enormous collection. “We have everything from farm tables to mismatched vintage china, glassware, flatware and napkins, gorgeous vintage lounge furniture, and all the antique bottles and jars you could ever want,” says Haley. “Our warehouse is a whole lot of fun to visit and dream up possibilities for your wedding or party.” And be on the lookout for their future endeavor—hosting cocktail parties to get to know their brides-to-be while showing off their vintage pieces. “We love throwing parties and meeting new people, and this would give us a chance to get creative and design something that we normally don’t get to do when we work with brides,” says Haley. hemstitchvintage.com
A FIELD OF LOVE
For wedding photographer Jessi Field, it’s all about her love for love. “As cliché as that may sound, I have been a people watcher my entire life, and my favorite parts have always been interaction and reaction, which weddings are naturally full of,” says Field. She
is also a firm believer in keeping things honest and organic. “Just letting things happen organically, whether that is good or bad, because the emotions, moments and relationships will be more meaningful to someone in the future,” she says. Although she has officially been Jessi Field Photography since 2011, Field began taking photos back in high school. For creative sparks, Field looks to other artistic outlets of interest. “Music is a huge part of my life,” she says. “It sparks my creativity. I also love to draw and write.” While she is rooted in the Gulf Coast, she is opening to travel wherever the story takes her. 130 S. Palafox (Inside The Wedding Studio), iamjessifield.com
RUNNING THE SHOW
“The ceremony is the heart of the event, the reason we have gathered, and for the first 30 minutes I have the floor, setting the tone for the rest of the evening,” says Darrin Land of Legacy Event Design. Land, who offers event planning, floral, and wedding officiant services, was voted Best Wedding Officiant this year, and it seems he is a natural fit in the role of event planner and overall head of wedding coordination. “I’m an adrenaline junkie. I enjoy the high pace, detail-orient-

Weddings ed, emotionally-charged event,” he says. Since 2007, Land has officiated and planned weddings with Legacy Event Design, but he got his start “working as both a floral designer and a floral wholesaler, then I began adding lighting and décor. Over the years, it developed into planning and coordinating.” In his multiple roles, Land believes clients respond to his “responsiveness, availability, professionalism and quality,” which he applies to all of his events. “From weddings, book signings, product launches and cooperate events, we have you covered.” legacyeventdesign.com
WEDDINGS WELL-PLANNED
“Weddings involve so many moving parts,” said Mēgan Kennedy, owner at Mēgan K. Events. “The bride's focus should be on the big thing: getting married,” she says. Aside from being voted among the Best of the Coast regularly, the feedback clients give Kennedy directly credits her team’s attention to detail, organization and passion for their profession for their outstanding experiences. “I attribute much of our success to having a team of gals who genuinely understands the emotion and enormity of every wedding,” states Kennedy, who offers full and month-of planning as well as consulting only and floral design services. Of the outcome, which typically involves identifying a client’s inspiration (Pinterest boards often help out), then tailoring that with vendors to make it unique to their event, Kennedy says, “Being a part of making a dream come true is such a privilege and is so rewarding,” Kennedy states. “And I love seeing people in love; It is always such an amazing thing to witness.” 600 S. Barracks St., megankevents.com
A BALANCE OF OLD AND NEW
Palafox Wharf has prime downtown
real estate for weddings, with views of historic Palafox harbor and a convenient location just seconds away from downtown chapels. "Many brides enjoy the ultimate experience of exchanging vows on our green by the exhilarating waterfront," says co-owner Sandy McDavid. "You can have the most memorable wedding photos imaginable with shades of yellow, orange, red, blue and purple as the sun fades in the sky." Palafox Wharf can also accommodate receptions under soft lights inside or outside the venue. To complete the special night, ask about grand exits. "You can enjoy an unusual send-off after your reception by exiting by boat," McDavid says. "Not many brides can say that they did that." Not only is Palafox Wharf in close October 2, 2014
proximity to historic downtown Pensacola, but it also has a little history of its own. "Having been built in 1880, Palafox Wharf is truly a unique location for ceremonies and receptions, from formal to casual," McDavid says. "It has a pleasant balance of the old and the new." 617 S. BEAUTY SCHOOLED
Since opening their doors nearly seven years ago, the beauty gurus at Style Downtown have been committed to exceeding their clients expectations, not just through killer new looks, but expert service and professionalism delivered in a fun atmosphere. “Our promise to all guests is to provide beauty, education, excellence and consistency,” says Manager Chrissy Decker. This summer’s unprecedented flood gave Style Downtown the opportunity to revamp their salon’s look, feel and vibe, feng shui style. And, says Decker, creating a relaxed environment is key, particularly on a bride’s wedding day. “The whole staff takes part, and we offer full use of the salon for their exclusive party,” she says. “Besides amazing hair and makeup services, we play customized playlists, offer champagne, coffee and other refreshment, decorate our chalkboard with the bride’s new name, and add flowers in the bride’s colors.” Among the talented staff is hair stylist Sarah Tucker, who loves making a bride look stunning on her big day. “I am truly a part of the happiest day of her life,” she says, “and to be one part of that moment when she feels her best is incredibly fulfilling.” 192 N. A BUSINESS IN BLOOM
Great flowers are the centerpieces of a great event, and nobody knows this more than Supposey. "They add a soft and natural touch to any day," says owner Chloe Lawry. "They're necessary to achieving a complete and well-executed event." Supposey creates floral works of art for a host of special events and photo shoots, but most often the floral business is called to design arrangements and bouquets for weddings. "From concept to completion, we work relentlessly marrying a girl's 'dream wedding' to a real celebration of marriage and love," says Lawry. This year, Supposey kicked off its collection of wedding rentals called Posey Props. Renting out items such as bistro lighting, church pews, dining tables, chairs, lanterns and more is just one way the company helps de-stress the wedding planning process. However, the flowers are still the main attraction. 130 S. Palafox (Inside The Wedding Studio), supposeyflorals.com 57

Community SPIRITED YOUTH
When looking for a program to keep your child active and engaged, you can’t ask for more than one that prides itself on offering training both on and off the mat. And ACE Cheer Company, the “Southeast’s largest and most successful competitive cheer organization,” does just that. With owner J.R. Zeringue’s emphasis on instilling leadership and a strong set of values in each coach, such training is a given. “We do everything in our power to prepare our athletes to be successful in competition and in life,” says Brand Manager Rob Goodwin. Ultimately, their coaching goals consist of more than winning awards and heightening technical skills—they are also about promoting great character within the program’s participants. “Many athletes and parents brag about being involved in our program because it gives the child something positive to focus on in addition to their academics,” says Goodwin. “Many have said the skills they learn while in the gym help them to become more focused and disciplined students in the classroom.” The staff’s commitment to excellence is fueled by the opportunity to change lives via ACE’s cheerleading programs.

LABOR OF LOVE
“She is compassionate, has a heart for our mission and kids, is driven, is an initiative taker, loves to meet people, and just truly shines when she talks about Big Brothers Big Sisters,” says Paula Shell, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, when talking about Kris Thoma. Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs adult mentors with children ages 6 through 18, providing services in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton and Bay counties. Having become a Big Sister in August 2013, Thoma took on the Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator position at the organization in July 2014. “She gets truly involved. She walks the talk,” says Shell, pointing to the most important evidence: “Her little sister recently wrote her stating she missed her and couldn't wait to see her again and that she loves spending time with her.” In addition to her work with Big Broth-
ers Big Sisters, Thoma also volunteers at many other area nonprofits such as Junior League of Pensacola, Impact 100, Waterfront Rescue Mission, Gulf Coast Kid’s House, First City Church, Loaves and Fishes and Manna Food Pantries. bbbsnwfl.org
BELOVED BEAR
Lewis Bear, Jr. is not only known for
leading the The Lewis Bear Company legacy and upholding his family name, but for pouring his generosity into many facets of the community and giving his time and resources to local organizations. “There are so many wonderful community organizations doing great work that owe a debt of gratitude to Lewis Bear, his family and his company,” says Judy Burns, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida. “His ability to foster a culture of kindness and generosity is evident every time you come into contact with one of his employees. We know them well because they help us with so many Ronald McDonald House events.” Bear’s dedication to the community immediately resonates with anyone who hears his name. His involvement not only
benefits the community, it encourages fellow community members to follow suit. “Just mentioning his name as a supporter of an organization gets attention,” says Burns. “He is so respected in the community, if he is ‘on your side’ his involvement encourages others to lend a hand, too.” lewisbearcompany.com
FIESTA ALL YEAR ROUND
Unlike a lot of other occasions to parade, the Fiesta of Five Flags is something unique to Pensacola—and that might be why the Fiesta Day Parade ranks so high in the minds of Best of the Coast voters. “As one of the original activities of the Fiesta of Five Flags celebration, the Fiesta Day Parade has helped commemorate the history of Pensacola for 65 years now, making it a Pensacola tradition in and of itself,” says Hillary Turner, Artistic Design and Public Relations Director with Fiesta of Five Flags. The Pensacola Seafood Festival and the Pensacola Crawfish Festival are both coordinated by the Fiesta of Five Flags organization as well, and have become traditions themselves since they were founded in the 1980s. While no changes to the festivals are

PAINTING THE TOWN
“There is a passion and a resilience that is worn like a badge in this building,” said Stacey Kostevicki, executive director of Gulf Coast Kid’s House. “I’m honored to work here.” As a children’s advocacy center, Gulf Coast Kid’s House combines the professionals and resources needed to serve the many needs of abused children and their families and provides awareness and prevention classes as part of its outreach program. “We have a motto that has served us well,” says Kostevicki. “We ask everyone to give time, talent or treasure– because each person’s situation is different.” And Chocolate Fest, the non-profit’s largest annual fundraiser, is a great way for the community to contribute and to satisfy a sweet tooth. “It is completely familyoriented, and it is a super affordable way

Since returning to Pensacola after a few years as a street artist in Los Angeles, Ashton Howard has been a busy man. When he’s not working on his iconic ocean paintings, he’s out painting the town, one business at a time. “Recently, I completed a huge piece on canvas for Khon’s on Palafox and have an outdoor mural lined up for Volume One at their new location,” Howard says. But he doesn’t stop there, focusing his many talents—including a recently discovered passion for digital illustration and design—into his new tshirt and apparel company, Southbound Apparel. “Southbound is a passion project that carries the same feelings I have for the ocean and being on the water…it is a source that provides endless inspiration.” Somehow, Howard still finds time

THE GOLDEN CHORUS
Celebrating its 25th season as a part of Pensacola’s vibrant arts community is the esteemed Pensacola Children’s Chorus. “Since it is our 25th anniversary, every performance this season is planned to be exceptional,” says Executive Director Mary Caughman Henriques. Thanks to the devotion of founding artistic directors Allen and Susan Pote, children eagerly return year after year to be a part of this prized group. “The children have a chance to develop their talents, to enjoy the camaraderie of their friends and to gain experience in stage presence and performing,” says Henriques. “The artistic directors strive to
produce a musical environment which is exciting, character building, creative, fun and challenging.” This season’s performances include a guest appearance with Ethan Bortnick in the WSRE studios in October, a Veteran’s Day performance at Naval Aviation Museum as a participant in the ACE Foo Foo Festival, Christmas on the Coast in December, the One World, Many Voices concert in February with guest conductor Francisco Nunez, and Showtime 2015. 46 E. SYMPHONIC SOUNDS
The Pensacola Symphony Orchestra is one popular piece of the Pensacola arts puzzle, likely because it works hard to reach the community at large, and has plans to do so even more in the coming seasons. “I’m very excited about the direction we are taking with community engagement and education,” states Bret Barrow, PSO’s Executive Director, of recently planned efforts to reach children, families, adults and seniors. The 2014-2015 season opens on October 4 with violinist Glenn Dicterow, a former concert master for the New York Philharmonic. Several

PARKS APPRECIATION
IT’S IN THE DNA
Parks are everywhere in Pensacola. In fact, as Brian Cooper, Director of Neigh-
borhood Services for the City of Pensacola , points out, there is a
park within half a mile of 97 percent of City residents. “Living an active lifestyle is so important to so many of our residents,” says Cooper of why parks remain popular even with all the distractions of the present day. The city maintains 93 parks, but Best of the Coast voters singled out historic Seville Square, host to many special events, along with Bayview Park and Maritime Park as some of their favorites. “The amenities at Bayview Park are so diverse that it is a regional park that attracts not only Pensacola residents but also many from Escambia County,” says Cooper, listing the dog park and beach, playgrounds, tennis courts, walking path, boat launch and pavilions as among the draws. Likewise, the multi-use Maritime Park “is truly a park for all of the great citizens of Pensacola.” And while some parks are still in process of being repaired after the flooding in April, Cooper states that the department is directing energy to getting all of Pensacola playing again. 222 W. MORE THAN SUPERHEROES
Over three days in February 2014 , Pensacon rocked enough worlds that it was, in its inaugural year, voted Best Annual Event. In the end, the convention drew over 11,000 attendees and had a huge economic impact. “I think Pensacola was just ready for a first class event of this kind, and that's what we tried to deliver. We tried to bring a diverse group of guests, as well as have activities for all ages and interests, and I think that gives everyone a reason to attend,” says Mike Ensley, October 2, 2014
At Saltmarsh Cleaveland & Gund, clients’ needs are put front and center, every day. And it all starts from the top down, with the leadership of Ron Jackson, who has built the Saltmarsh legacy. “As our fearless leader, Ron Jackson is unique in his ability to relate to everyone he meets with absolute sincerity,” says Senior Manager Allison Jones, CPA. “He demonstrates what we all at Saltmarsh strive to be to our clients a helping hand in a stressful world.” Jackson’s leadership is a large part of what has drawn individuals to join the Saltmarsh team. “The rich history of Saltmarsh and their client-focused DNA are what attracted me to the firm,” says Managing Director of Saltmarsh Financial Advisors Christina Doss, AAMS. “That, and the depth and breathe of resources and technical skills of my colleagues.” Unlike what you might expect of a typical public accounting firm, Saltmarsh’s business model allows flexibility that recognizes the value and dedication of their employees. “We give employees leeway in how, when, and where the work gets done, as long as goals are met and client service is kept as a top priority,” says Jones. As a result, Saltmarsh is able to extend exemplary services to their clients, day in and day out. 900 N. 12th Ave., saltmarshcpa.com

HAPPY NOTES
Great country music. Helpful and informative news. Community focus. It’s hard to imagine what sister stations Cat Country 98.7 and NewsRadio 1620 don’t bring to the table. “We want to super serve all of our listeners,” says General Manager Mary Hoxeng. “Our listeners are our friends. We want to be sure they enjoy spending time with us and can trust us with the information they may need.” But
what is all that ear candy without fun and engaging on-air personalities to present it? The Cat Pak Morning Show’s Brent Lane is there to entertain. “I try to reflect the cares and concerns of our community, while sharing the everyday fun and struggles of life. I like that people feel like they know me, and I feel like I know them,” says Lane. And NewsRadio’s Wendi Summers keeps listeners informed. “I love people and love to have fun,” she says. “The professionals I have on the Pensacola Expert Panel bring something interesting to share with them each day.” But that fun doesn’t end when you turn off the radio, as Cat Country’s website and Facebook page keep listeners coming back for more. Aside from providing fresh and relevant content, “We also do quite a bit of special contesting and some exclusive giveaways with social media,” says Hoxeng. 7251 Plantation Road, catcountry987.com, newsradio1620.com
ALL KINDS OF SOUND
Cat Power’s December 2013 solo performance at Vinyl Music Hall was voted among the best concerts of the year. For most venues, the acclaimed indie artist’s
stop would be the highlight of the week, but within days of the show, Vinyl also hosted Misfits, Chris Thomas King, and (hed) PE. That kind of diversity in bookings has been, and will continue to be, paramount to the downtown venue going forward, says Chris Wilkes, the talent buyer for Vinyl. “We can't continue without remaining diverse. Pensacola is just too small a market for a venue like Vinyl to try to cater to even one or two genres,” Wilkes states, adding, “We've also found that music fans in Pensacola have very eclectic tastes, so we try to always factor that in as well.” On top of nods as a venue, Best of the Coast voters also recognized the bar and Vinyl bartender Chris Brown individually, which is no surprise to Wilkes. “Chris is a super friendly guy, and he makes fast, great drinks, which is key when you're dealing with the kind of volume that can happen when we are packed with over 500 people.” But the crowds won’t come without acts to see, so keeping great live music the priority will continue, Wilkes emphasizes, something that local music fans can definitely keep voting for. 2 S. Arts & Entertainment Horsing Around art, film, music, stage, books and other signs of civilization...
by Jennifer Leigh
In keeping with tradition, Ballet Pensacola is beginning their performance season in a ghoulish manner. For the past few years, the ballet company opened with “Dracula.” This year however, a new tale will be told with “The Headless Horseman” ballet. “We have really created our own version of the story to make it the most effective for dance,” said Richard Steinert, artistic director for Ballet Pensacola. “I particularly liked the challenge of this, its feeling of Americana, and the opportunity to meld numerous different versions of ‘The Headless Horseman’ and ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.’” Using a fairy tale as the inspiration for a ballet is fitting due to their shared magical elements, Steinert explained. “When it comes to knowing if a story will translate into ballet, I can only say that I have learned to trust my instincts,” he said. “Everyone told me ‘The Matrix’ would never succeed

Ears & Fingers by Jason Leger
Thom Yorke “Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes”
Thom Yorke can quite literally do anything he wants. So for him to release an album in one format, at the drop of a hat—without forcing it on us, a la U2—is
nothing shocking. This is also a very little surprise considering the revelry surrounding past few Radiohead albums. “King of Limbs” only had a few days’ notice, while “In Rainbows” was announced a week before it was released. He also tries to find new, innovative ways to get his music to the public. “In Rainbows” came with a “pay-what-you-like” price tag, and “The King of Limbs” is considered the world’s first “newspaper album,” having a special release with a limited run newspaper promotional pack. Yorke’s latest solo effort, “Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes,” was released last week on the same day it was announced. It made for quite a happy Friday. Yorke and Radiohead producer, Nigel Godrich, released the album experimentally, using the online file sharing program BitTorrent. The site has been revamped, and there is quite possibly no better way to draw attention to your website than to have one of the most
well-known musicians in the world release an album exclusively through it. “Boxes” is absolute Yorke at his finest. It’s 39 minutes of drowsy, ambient triphop held together by Yorke’s signature glossy falsetto. In dealing with Yorke’s solo output, it’s necessary to clarify that this is NOT Radiohead. There is not a Greenwood brother in sight, and I would be lying if I even lazily tried to classify it as a rock album. “Boxes” should even be given quite a bit of distinction from Yorke’s last solo effort, 2006’s “The Eraser,” as this new LP is dripping with minimalism. There are less frills, limited peaks and valleys, and little brightness, but as a whole the long player is peaceful, cohesive, and ultimately satisfying for fans of Yorke’s extensive catalog. While we are all waiting on pins and needles for something new from Radiohead, this probably isn’t going to scratch that itch. However, “Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes” is a notch in the belt of one of the world’s most acclaimed musicians; one who is looking out for all of us. “Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes” is out now via BitTorrent.
TRACK OF THE WEEK:

Pensacola boys Isle have released a new track from their upcoming full-length. ‘Evelyn Snowfall’ is hazy and laid-back, with the perfect jazzy backdrop to be an early addition to your fall soundtrack. Pick Your Pumpkin by Jennifer Leigh
If you’re looking to get in the autumn spirit outside of the traditional pumpkin patch, head to the Strong Street Studio Annual Pumpkin Party. Pensacola artist and founder of Strong Street Studio, Scott Novota has been hand-blowing glass for more than a decade. Throughout that time, he has created thousands of glass pumpkins using traditional and whimsical designs. “It all started when a friend asked for a custom glass pumpkin to give to her son since his birthday is in October,” Novota said. “She’s had a new one made every
year since then, and it just ballooned from there.” When Novota first began selling his glass pumpkins to the public, he started out making 75. This year, he’s created nearly 800 with the help of his brother, Ryan, to keep up with demand. No two pumpkins are alike. “Some of the pumpkins are blue, some are the traditional amber color. Some are apricot—that’s my favorite color right now,” Novota explained. Since finding the perfect pumpkin is often an event, Novota and his wife, Molli,
decided to host an annual party for folks to peruse the pieces and pick their favorite. “It’s just a fun time at Jaco’s. We’ll have some live entertainment from John Ripley on the piano and drink specials,” he said. And if you need a spot to place your pumpkins, Ben Bogan will be selling his handcrafted, metal furniture. Even though you can’t carve them, glass pumpkins offer a neat alternative— or addition—to your typical holiday décor. “They’re something you can bring out every year and use in a centerpiece,” Novota said. “And they don’t go bad.” {in}

Opening a Star-Studded Season
Last year, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra (PSO) performed with several guest musicians on the Saenger Theatre stage. From Academy Award-winning film composer and conductor Bill Conti to pianist Sofya Gulyak, who performed two enthusiastically received encores after her “Russian Spectacular” performance, the 2013-2014 season had a series of highlights that likely contributed to the PSO being voted Best Way to Get Cultured in this year’s Best of the Coast Awards. For its 2014-2015 season, PSO continues its practice of dynamic programming combined with a diverse lineup of accomplished guest soloists. “Each concert has a guest artist, and we are very excited about our slate of guests this season,” Bret Barrow, PSO’s Executive Director, said. “The first concert opens with violinist Glenn Dicterow. Dicterow spent 34 years as the concert master—first chair for us band folks—for the New York Philharmonic. He retired this summer and is starting a new chapter in his career as a soloist. He’ll play the Beethoven Concerto with us for opening night.” Along with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, PSO’s music director and conductor Peter Rubardt has set an opening program that includes Mozart’s “Overture to The Marriage of Figaro,” Barber’s “Medea's Dance of Vengeance” and Ravel’s “Daphnis et Chloé.” “More than just programming expertise, Peter is a master in creating an unforgettable concert experience,” Barrow said. “He and the musicians bring the music to life in their performances, but he also provides narrative to the concert. He gives context and often shares helpful listening ‘signposts’ in music that may be less familiar.” First time attendees are surveyed after each performance and both the conductor and musicians have been able to win over new audience members. “Peter consistently receives very high praise for his ability to connect the audience with the performance.
The orchestra is staffed with amazing musicians, some from Pensacola and many from around the region. They are all professionals with formal training and amazing dedication to their instruments,” Barrow explained. Whether a person is a newcomer to symphony performances or a long-time season ticket holder, PSO aims to have something to interest and engage everyone this season. “If you’re looking ahead at the programs this year, we basically play one concert a month from Oct. 4, 2014 through April 25, 2015, the exceptions being in January and
director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, will join PSO for “Sounds of New Orleans: A Tribute to Louis Armstrong” for its Valentine’s Day Pops performance. “In between the pops concerts, we’ll have the ‘Beethoven and Blue Jeans’ concert featuring a Symphonic Suite from Bernstein’s “West Side Story” and a solo performance by the foremost trombonist in the world, Joseph Alessi,” Barrow said. For its “Mozart Madness” performance in late January, PSO will perform Mozart’s Requiem Mass at the First Baptist Church of Pensacola with local soloists and the UWF Singers. “We continue the classical concerts in March with Richard Strauss tone poem Don Quixote, performed by the PSO with cellist Scott Kluksdahl,” Barrow stated. March also features ] PSO’s annual “Russian Spectacular” concert, which will feature pianist Ilya Yakushev playing Prokofiev. “The season concludes with the resounding tones of the ‘Organ Symphony’ of Camille Saint-Saens as we deploy the Saenger’s pipe organ, currently under renovation, for the first time in decades with a full orchestra,” Barrow said of the orchestra’s April season finale. Combined with the acoustics of the Saenger which, following the renovation completed in 2009, Barrow praised. “We also perform in an amazing venue. The orchestra plays without amplification, so the acoustic environment, walls, ceiling and floor, is critical in reflecting sound.” The return of the Saenger’s Morton Theatre Organ to action is likely going to be one of PSO’s most exciting and memorable season finales yet, just one aspect of its commitment to creating memorable experiences for its audience. “It would be easy to think that the variety of what we do attracts people to the Symphony, but there’s more to it,” Barrow said. “In Pensacola, like elsewhere, a lot of things compete for leisure time. In order to become a choice for most folks, you have to deliver something desirable and unique. Our central goal is to make music that is relevant for all of Pensacola.” {in}

March when we have two performances. We’re also the orchestra for our beloved Pensacola Opera for their January and March productions,” Barrow said. For its November performance, the PSO will be joined by Anthony McGill, the principal clarinetist from the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. “You might recall a famous performance of McGill’s when he joined Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and Gabriela Montero for a performance at President Barack Obama’s first inauguration,” Barrow said. “He’ll join us in November for the Copland Concerto as part of the Foo Foo Festival.” WHAT: 2014-2015 Season For its annual New Year’s Eve WHEN: 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 Pops concert, violinist Lindsay WHERE: Saenger Theatre, 116 S. news of the weird PROFESSIONAL BIOLOGY RESEARCH The job of determining stress levels in whales is itself apparently stressful. The most reliable information about tension lies in hormones most accurately measured by researchers' boarding a boat, sidling up to a whale and waiting until it blasts snot out of its blowhole. By catching enough of it (or wiping it off of their raincoats), scientists can run the gunk through chemical tests. However, a team of engineering researchers at Olin College in Needham, Massachusetts, told The Boston Globe in September that they were on the verge of creating a radio- controlled, mucus-trapping drone that would bring greater civility to the researchers' job (and reduce the add-on stress the whales must feel at being stalked by motorboats). WAR IS HELL (1) The newly inaugurated "AlQaeda in the Indian Subcontinent" (a project of Osama bin Laden's successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri) failed spectacularly in its maiden mission in September when it attempted to commandeer an American "aircraft carrier" in port in Karachi, Pakistan. Actually, the ship was a misidentified Pakistani naval vessel that did not even vaguely resemble an aircraft carrier, and Pakistani forces killed or captured all 10 jihadists. (2) A September raid on an ISIS safe house in Syria turned up, among other items (according to Foreign Policy magazine), a Dell laptop owned by Tunisian jihadist "Muhammed S.," containing (not unexpectedly) recipes for bubonic plague and ricin, and (less likely) a recipe for banana mousse and a variety of songs by Celine Dion. LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES In September, the Seattle-based Mars Hill megachurch announced it would close several branches as founding preacher Mark Driscoll takes personal leave to contemplate over-the-top messages he's made in the past about women. Among the most striking statements (as gathered by the "Wenatchee the Hatchet" blog in Wenatchee, Washington) were those expressing certainty that women exist solely to support men. A man's penis "is not your (personal)

penis," he told men. "Ultimately, God created you, and it is his penis." "Knowing that his penis would need a home ... God created a woman (who) makes a very nice home." Driscoll added, helpfully, "But, though you may believe your hand is shaped like a home, it is not." • Televangelist Jim Bakker no longer runs the Praise The Lord ministry, but still operates a church near Branson, Missouri, with a website selling a staggering array of consumer goods denominated as "love gifts" for worshippers who donate at certain levels via the website's shopping cart. Featured are clothing, jewelry (some "Tiffany-like"), bulk foods, "Superfood" legacy seeds, fuel-efficient generators (and a "foldable solar panel"), vitamins and supplements, "Jim's Favorite" foods (like ketchup), "survival" equipment and supplies, water filtration products, and a strong commitment to the supposed benefits of "Silver Solution" gels and liquids ($25 for a 4-ounce tube), even though the FDA has long refused to call colloidal silver "safe and effective". Of course, books, CDs and DVDs (and a digital download) of Bakker's inspirational and prophetic messages are also available. FIRST-WORLD DILEMMAS (1) Ten parking spaces (of 150 to 200 square feet each) one flight below the street at the apartment building at 42 Crosby St. in New York City have been offered for sale by the developer for $1 million each—nearly five times the median U.S. price for an entire home. (2) New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Schulman told ABC News in September of an uptick in women's calf liposuction procedures—because of ladies' frustration at not being able to squeeze into the latest must-have boots. (The surgery is tricky because of the lack of calf fat, and recovery time of up to 10 months means surgery now will not help the fashion plates until next fall.) {in} From Universal Press Syndicate Chuck Shepherd’s News Of The Weird © 2014 Chuck Shepherd

Keeping Residents Safe Since 2006, the Local Option Sales Tax has provided millions of dollars worth of improvements to Escambia County’s Public Safety Department. Thanks to the Local Option Sales Tax, the Escambia County Fire Department has been able to upgrade its equipment and vehicles, as well as expand fire stations and build modern fire stations including Escambia County’s newest station on Perdido Key. During the final three years of the current Local Option Sales Tax Escambia County’s Public Safety Department will be able to begin construction on new fire stations for Beulah and Osceola.
$800,000 The cost to purchase a single ladder truck.
$9,625,310 Total Local Option Sales Tax dollars spent to purchase ladder trucks, fire engines and ambulances since 2006.
53,815 Total calls for emergency medical and fire service last year.
Fire fighters now have access to thermal imaging cameras, which allows them to “see through the smoke” and identify individuals needing help inside of a burning building. When the current Local Option Sales Tax is completed at the end of 2017, a total of $23 million will have been spent on improving Escambia County’s Fire Services alone. More than $6.7 million has been budgeted to improve the County’s fleet of ambulances. The new ambulances are better able to reach those in need, providing enchanced cardiac care and serving those with more complicated cases. Additions to the Emergency Medical Service fleet also include laptop computers in the ambulances to improve response times and increase the amount of information shared from the ambulances to local hospitals. Escambia County has used more than $11 million to upgrade and improve the County’s emergency radio system. Paired with the other updated communication tools, first responders, like fire fighters and paramedics, spend less time trying to figure “where” a patient is and more time on saving lives or property.
