The IN Delivers Again

2010 will go down as a banner year for the Independent News. We won national recognition for coverage of the BP crisis and did more investigative reporting than any other year in our 11 years on the Pensacola scene. With a small, gifted staff and an army of talented freelancers, the IN gave its readers insight into the major stories behind the headlines. We lived up to the motto of our very first year of operation:

Deepwater Horizon tragedy through the eyes of one victim's family May 20, 2010 The IN traveled to Eunice, La., home of Blair “Papa Bear” Manuel, who was one of the 11 men killed on April 20 in the explosion of Deepwater Horizon, a floating oil drilling platform 48 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Our concern was that once the tar balls hit our shores, the loss of life on that fateful day would be lost in furor. This story also gave a unique, personal look at how the offshore rigs impact the small community of Eunice, with its Eunice Superette & Slaughterhouse creating fresh boudin and the completely one-of-a-kind “Nutcracker Museum.”

The misrepresentations, broken promises and
puffery of the maritime park developer Dec. 9, 2010 After a month-long investigation and a review of hundreds of pages of documents, the IN has discovered that Scott Davison, the front man for Maritime Park Development Partners, misrepresented his development team for the largest public/private project in the history of Pensacola and his financial capabilities in his original proposal in order to qualify to be the master developer. He actively lobbied for the support of the African-American community with promises of creating a Contractor’s Academy to increase the number of minority-owned contractors and skilled workers—promises that some black leaders believe Davison has failed to fulfill. Community Maritime Park Associates attorney Ed Fleming is still investigating the contract formation and performance by Davison and MPDP, but the CMPA board has fired MPDP as the project coordinator of the public improvements at the park.

That question remains unanswered a year after the grisly murders of the Beulah couple July 8, 2010 The night of the murders of Bud and Melanie Billings, their daughter, Ashley Billings Markham, told the investigators that her father carried large sums of money in a briefcase because of his business—as much as $100,000. When former business associate Henry “Cab” Tice was interviewed on “Dateline NBC,” he told reporter Keith Morrison, “Bud normally carried $20,000 in cash in his briefcase.”

No briefcase filled with money was ever found. The State Attorney’s Office and Markham’s attorney, Robert Beasley, say that there wasn’t such a briefcase missing, but others aren’t so sure.

Claims czar Feinberg rebuilds trust Sept. 23, 2010 Ken Feinberg, head of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, promised to streamline the BP claims process and put generous checks into locals’ hands before they lost their homes and businesses. With $20 billion in the fund established by BP, Feinberg, who had handled claims for the 9/11 disaster, Agent Orange and the Virginia Tech massacre, became “The Candy Man” for the Gulf Coast.

Unfortunately, Feinberg and his operation stumbled out of the box when BP handed over the claims process. The claims czar had to barnstorm across the Gulf region in September to repair the process and his reputation.

Superintendent refuses final offer for Brownsville school Nov. 18, 2010 The pastor of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church had to give it one more try on Friday, Nov. 12. He knew that the Superintendent of Schools didn’t want him there and that his appearance may open him and his congregation up to criticism and scorn again.
On the surface, the church’s plan was simple: purchase the abandoned, aging Brownsville Middle School in what the daily newspaper had described as a “poverty-ridden, high-crime neighborhood” and convert it into a community center. Rev. LuTimothy May walked into the school board workshop at the J. E. Hall Center knowing that Superintendent Malcolm Thomas had rejected the church’s final offer of $500,000 and refused to bring any recommendation on it to the board. However, he owed his trustees, congregation and the community one final attempt. Thomas didn’t budge. The school board refused to overrule him and the school remains vacant.

T
he IN expanded its reach beyond local boundaries when IN publisher Rick Outzen became a contributor to the national news website “The Daily Beast” (thedailybeast.com). In 2009, Outzen created a stir with his articles on the murders of Byrd and Melanie Billings, which led to him being profiled by The New York Times and within spots on “Dateline NBC” and TLC’s “Home Invasion Murders.” The BP disaster propelled IN and its publisher to a new level. 1. LEAKY PIPE DAMPENS BROWNSVILLE DEAL
Jan. 14, 2010 IN discovered that the closed Brownsville Middle School had a damaged underground pipe that leaked nearly 1.4 million gallons. No big deal, right? It is a big deal when the Escambia County School District is trying to sell the school “as is” for $1 million to Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
2. IN CRASHES PARTY
April 22, 2010 The IN staff traveled to Tallahassee on April 15 to report on the “We the People Rally,” hosted by the Tea Party. Our YouTube videos of the event, featuring a purple Spiderman, Ben Franklin and angry protesters, became viral hits on the Internet.

Aug. 19, 2010 IN posted the infamous emails of City Attorney Rusty Wells. At the Pensacola City Council’s request, City Manager Al Coby requested the emails be returned. We refused.

May 6, 2010 The IN first broke on Rick’s Blog the story of Mark Clabaugh, a George Touart supporter, being arrested for allegedly attempting to break into the home of Karen Sindel, Touart’s opponent for Escambia County commissioner. The IN followed up with this article that gave a brief history into dirty trick operations in Escambia County.

The networks would break into regular programming to broadcast the latest reports. For six weeks, told the IN the letters were required by federal law. In fact, the Mississippi Department of Education advised against listing specific subgroups that didn’t make adequate progress.

July 8, 2010 IN had an exclusive interview with Paul Stamets, a renowned mycologist who believes his discovery of the oyster mushroom’s appetite for oil particles could help fight the BP oil disaster. Oct. 7, 2010 IN reported on the “One Nation Working Together” rally held Oct. 2 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to bolster support for Democratic candidates. Needless to say, it had little impact on the Nov. 2 general election, which saw the Republicans take control of the U.S. House.
the investigation captivated the nation. The trial of Leonard Patrick Gonzalez, Jr. for the home invasion robbery and murders of Byrd and Melanie Billings was over in five days. Monday was jury selection. Pat Poff, as he is also known, was found guilty of the murders. The jury recommended the death penalty, and he now awaits Judge Nicholas Geeker’s final ruling.
9. A CYCLE OF INJUSTICE?
A 1974 death reflects present-day frustrations with Steen case March 25, 2010 Many who either witnessed or were a part of the protests involving the death of local teen Victor Steen viewed the marches, city council meetings, and the coroner's inquest with both awe and frustration. At times, it isn't difficult to compare similarities between the protests that have happened as a result of Steen's death to the marches and protests that occurred surrounding the death rattle of segregation in the South. While there have been many local incidents in the past several decades of deaths at the hands of law enforcement officers with no indictment by the State Attorney's Office, there is one incident which transpired in Pensacola in 1974 that particularly brings to mind the frustrations felt by those calling for further investigation into the death of Victor Steen: the death of Wendel Sylvester Blackwell.

The organizers had promised all the interviews with the big name acts like Bush, Daughtry and Stone Temple Pilots to the daily newspaper, but that didn’t stop us from covering the biggest music event of the year for the Pensacola area. We devoted most of the issue to DeLuna Fest with interviews from The Submarines, Better than Ezra, The Honey Island Swamp Band, The Revivalists, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Kermit Ruffins, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Michael Franti. The most popular of the events will likely be the Pensacola Pelican Drop in downtown Pensacola. The party begins at 5 p.m. on Intendencia Street at the CAT Country/International Paper Stage. At 8 p.m. the 13-foot pelican, with more than 1,500 lights, will make its appearance. Once the clock strikes midnight, the pelican will drop from 100 feet above the ground and fireworks will begin. According to the Pensacola Pelican Drop press release, the event brings 40,000 people to downtown Pensacola. The party starts at 7 p.m. at Seville Quarter, where you can choose just how crazy you want to get with various New Year’s Eve events. Live entertainment will be at Rosie O’Grady’s, including the world famous dueling piano show, and DJ Trey will be spinning at Phineas Phogg’s. The menu includes sweet and spicy shrimp over a fresh thyme and fried green tomato stack finished with a crawfish butter sauce paired with Alexander Valley Vineyards New Gewürz, North Coast Gewürztraimer 2008. There are two seating times for the dinner, 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., and the cost is $100 per person.
Jackson’s will be hosting a threecourse dinner at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the President’s Room. Chef Irv Miller will be preparing the menu, which includes entrées such as grilled grouper with seared diver scallop, Zinfandel mustard and pine-nut-crusted filet mignon and sumac, and rosemary-rubbed grilled rack of lamb. Bottomless champagne and pianist Al Martin, who will be taking requests all night long, will complement the dinner. The cost per person is $125 and includes party favors and valet parking. To accommodate those with early New Year’s Eve plans, Jackson’s will be open at 5 p.m. serving from their fall/winter dinner menu. he Gills and Johnny Apple-Eyes will be playing a benefit show at Blazzues for the victims of the earthquake that occurred in Haiti earlier this year. Photographer and event organizer Daniel Fox will play
a slideshow with video footage from his recent trip to Haiti. Fox is planning another trip to Haiti in early 2011 and will be bringing all of the proceeds from this show directly to children and families in need. “We will be bringing them much needed things like food, water and clothes,” Fox said. “We will also be doing some restoration work to help rebuild where much of the orphanage structures have been destroyed or damaged.”

W
illiam Howell is a bundle of energy, to say the least. A mild-mannered multimedia specialist working at a downtown business by day, he is a performer, recording star and father for the rest of the 24-hour period. He has been creating music in Pensacola for quite a while now—for free. Over the past 10 years, he has been performing on Public Radio International (PRI) with a group of local musicians, producing holiday music in unique and original styles. Now, he and some of those same musicians are performing live on PRI and at various Pensacola locations. Being as efficient as possible, William gathered some of the best musicians in town at the PRI studio to record customized holiday songs, while giving away the CDs for free. Much of the time musicians have to play or sing a certain way, but with these recordings and subsequent gifts, they were able to be completely free and creative. To date, 5,000 CDs have been given to the public. The group, called The 18 String Army, plays in local establishments such as The Global Grill, The Leisure Club, Hopjacks Pizza Kitchen & Taproom, and The Drowsy Poet. We caught up with William on the job in downtown Pensacola.
Gypsy jazz was huge as well. When I was in Seattle, there was grunge. While in Chicago…well, you know, I absorbed whatever was going on while I was in each place.
IN: Are you a native Pensacolian? Howell: No—being in a military family, I am from all over the place. New Orleans was one of our stops as a family, and that was a big influence. There was a big hip-hop scene in New Orleans; it opened my eyes.
[There is a documentary being made about Howell’s holiday music project. The documentary filmmaker Steve Moody was present during the interview. He gave us his insight on what William has been creating. Moody: He wanted to tell the story of how it

kinds, are a great way to fit in. So I learned stats for different kinds of sports and was able to make friends that way. IN: How and why did you create a customized holiday song CD? Howell: Because the meaning of the holiday has been lost in the sea of commercialism. I had been working with all of these musicians and thought about what a great collaborative effort it would be to make holiday songs the way we want. All ideas were welcome; we all worked together. Individually, each musician is able to shine outside the band they normally play in. It is the fruit of our labor, and we were able to give a gift that meant a lot.
IN: Do your live shows always consist of the same musicians? Howell: There are four musicians other than myself: Ashley Pennewill on mandolin, Michael Danielson on upright bass, Travis Jackson on drums, Jonathan Clark on violin and myself on guitar and banjo. Sometimes we play a duo, a trio or a quartet. IN: Where can we see your band next? Howell: This is the schedule so far: Dec. 18 we are at The Drowsy Poet, Dec. 24 we will be at Hopjacks, Dec. 25 we will be at The Fish House and, last but not least, we are scheduled for a private party on Dec. 26. IN: Do you cover others’ music, or are you performing all original pieces? Howell: I am working on a solo album. But, during the live performances, we are covering a little jazz, bluegrass and gypsy jazz. We go back and forth. IN: Who are your top three musical influences? Howell: So much of that depends on the day, the hour and the mood I am in. It is so hard to categorize that into a top three. So many things are woven together. I like classical of all types. I like Béla Fleck, Gillian Welch… there are so many. Influences come from a musical journey. Acoustic music is most interesting played on parlor instruments. IN: Are you still creating visual art? Howell: My creative need is filled at work. I am allowed to be creative here in other ways. The arms work was a self-portrait: what do I know better than my hands? I could pick them out of a lineup. IN: What is next for you and The 18 String Army? Howell: Playing music all over town and taking advantage of every opportunity. We are excited about the future. news of the weird THE CABRAL CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP in Manteca, Calif., was so desperate for a sale in October that one of its employees picked up potential customer Donald Davis, 67, at his nursing home, brought the pajamasand-slippers-clad, dementia-suffering resident in to sign papers, handed him the keys to his new pickup truck (with the requested chrome wheels!), and sent him on his way (even tossing Davis’ wheelchair into the truck’s bed as Davis sped away). Shortly afterward, Davis led police on a high-speed chase 50 miles from Manteca. He was stopped and detained (but at a hospital the next morning, he passed away from heart failure). The Cabral salesman said Davis had called him twice the day before, insisting on buying a new truck. CULTURAL DIVERSITY At an out-of-theway Iranian cemetery on the border with Turkmenistan lies an ancient burial ground guarded by a majestic tower and marked with headstones, some of which resemble penises and some of which resemble breasts, supposedly in honor of the prophet Khalid Nabi, who was born a Christian but who became a hero of Islam when his daughter visited the Prophet Muhammad and converted her father. The site is growing in popularity among young Iranians, but officials struggle to embrace it fully as a tourist destination. LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Imagine the surprise in November when a burglar rummaging through the St. Benno Church in Munich, Germany, was suddenly attacked. He had bent down to open the donation box, and just then, a statue of St. Antonius fell on top of him, momentarily knocking him to the floor and forcing him to flee empty-handed. MIXED MESSAGE: Larry Falter, the owner of a Superior, Wis., jewelry store and an elder in a local messianic church, began staging in November a “Second Coming” sale, supposedly to commemorate the Day of the Lord when Jesus returns, triggering the Apocalypse. Among the responses by local residents: Why would anyone planning to be taken away need jewelry anyway, and, especially, why would Falter need to sell his jewelry instead of just giving it away? (Falter said that he owes money to people right now and is obliged to pay them back as best he can before departing.) QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS In November, Singapore’s Information Ministry denounced the country’s water polo team for wearing swim trunks in a likeness of the nation’s flag (stars and a crescent)— especially since, on the men’s trunks, the inch-thick, 5-inch-long crescent is placed vertically on the front in what appears to be an “are you glad to see me?” design. The team’s manager denied even the “slightest intention” of insulting the country.
BY CHUCK SHEPPARD • An unnamed plumber in Stockholm, Sweden, was arrested in August for attempting to procure sex from an underage girl after he had confronted the girl’s father on the telephone. According to the plumber, the girl’s sex services were advertised on the Internet, and the plumber paid online and scheduled a session, but the girl failed to show up. The plumber somehow found the girl’s home telephone number and demanded a refund from her father, who reported him to police.
PEOPLE WITH ISSUES “Dr.” Berlyn Aussieahshowna, 37, was arrested in Boise, Idaho, in November and charged with practicing medicine without a license after she convinced at least two women to let her fondle their breasts under the guise that she was performing a breast “exam.” According to police investigators, Aussieahshowna is neither a doctor nor even Berlyn Aussieahshowna. She is Kristina Ross, and is not even a biological female, although she was identified in a 2004 arrest as a male-to-female transsexual. Authorities were puzzled why the two women were duped since both times, “Dr.” Aussieahshowna performed her “consultations,” including the exams, in bars. UPDATE When News of the Weird reported in 2004 on Disney fanatic George Reiger of Bethlehem, Pa., he was in full glory, with a 5,000-piece collection of Disney character and movie memorabilia and some 2,000 tattoos covering almost all of his body. He said then that he had been married six times, but that each wife had left him, unable to compete with Disney for his affection. In November 2010, Reiger, now 56, opening up to The Philadelphia Inquirer, admitted that he had not been married at all and was in fact extremely lonely in his Disney obsession, but that he had finally found the love of a woman and wanted to end his fanaticism and remove the tattoos. BRIGHT IDEAS Robbery Modus Operandi: (1) Caroline Slusher, 32, and two associates were indicted in Willoughby, Ohio, in the November “armed” robbery of a BP gas station convenience store. After a clerk caught Slusher shoplifting, Slusher raised her arm menacingly and threatened to touch the clerk, claiming she was infected with the highly destructive bacteria MRSA. The clerk backed off, and the three f led. (2) Nakita Norman, 44, aided by two distracting associates, was captured on surveillance video stuffing two fur coats down the front of her pants, directly into the crotch area, and departing the Sword Furs store in Westlake, Ohio. What do you appreciate most about your friends? The understanding that life is not about always having to see each other, because let’s be honest—sometimes we’re too busy to have a social life. All it takes is the time for a phone call to catch up. Who is your favorite hero in fiction? I don’t really have one, but my non-fiction hero is my great grandfather—a man of few words who touched the lives of so many. I never had the opportunity to meet him. Who is your favorite heroine in fiction? Again, I don’t really have one either, but my non-fiction heroines are my mother, grandmother and wife. Without these people in my life, who knows where I would be today. Thank you for all the support and unconditional love. What is the best thing you have ever won? What is the worst idea you’ve ever had? A few years ago, I had the opportunity to move to Vancouver for a year.
