STEVE NODINE The former Mobile County Commissioner is a true Pensacola phenomenon: a rising star who soared into Pensacola on the back of a Northrop Grumman Air Tanker and two years later, stood trial for murder, which ended in a mistrial. YEAR IN REVIEW

The IN Delivers Again

| By Rick Outzen

2010 will go down as a banner year for the Independent News. We won national recognition for coverage of the BP crisis and did more investigative reporting than any other year in our 11 years on the Pensacola scene. With a small, gifted staff and an army of talented freelancers, the IN gave its readers insight into the major stories behind the headlines. We lived up to the motto of our very first year of operation:

“A good newspaper for a town that needs one.”

Top 10 Cover Stories Of 2010 1. FIGHTING FOR PAPA BEAR

Deepwater Horizon tragedy through the eyes of one victim's family May 20, 2010 The IN traveled to Eunice, La., home of Blair “Papa Bear” Manuel, who was one of the 11 men killed on April 20 in the explosion of Deepwater Horizon, a floating oil drilling platform 48 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Our concern was that once the tar balls hit our shores, the loss of life on that fateful day would be lost in furor. This story also gave a unique, personal look at how the offshore rigs impact the small community of Eunice, with its Eunice Superette & Slaughterhouse creating fresh boudin and the completely one-of-a-kind “Nutcracker Museum.”

2. HOODWINKED?

The misrepresentations, broken promises and

puffery of the maritime park developer Dec. 9, 2010 After a month-long investigation and a review of hundreds of pages of documents, the IN has discovered that Scott Davison, the front man for Maritime Park Development Partners, misrepresented his development team for the largest public/private project in the history of Pensacola and his financial capabilities in his original proposal in order to qualify to be the master developer. He actively lobbied for the support of the African-American community with promises of creating a Contractor’s Academy to increase the number of minority-owned contractors and skilled workers—promises that some black leaders believe Davison has failed to fulfill. Community Maritime Park Associates attorney Ed Fleming is still investigating the contract formation and performance by Davison and MPDP, but the CMPA board has fired MPDP as the project coordinator of the public improvements at the park.

the beast corps

Local writers boost coverage of BP disaster merely an entry in a financial report. The IN convinced The Daily Beast to join forces with the IN to form The Beast Corps—a team of freelance writers, college students, photographers and others who covered the BP oil spill from Louisiana to the Florida Keys. In May and June, these volunteers helped us. The articles were posted online and published in the IN and gave our coverage of the biggest story of 2010 much greater depth.

T

he story of the BP disaster was huge—with local, state, regional, national and international implications. The IN dedicated its time, talents and newspaper resources to telling the truth behind the environmental, health and economic disaster. From the paper’s staff ’s perspective, the Gulf Coast was in a battle against a multi-billion dollar corporation that saw Northwest Florida as

3. BRINGING BOBBY HOME

Missing WWII pilot honored by his nation and family Nov. 11, 2010 Sena Maddison wrote this special Veteran’s Day cover story about her great uncle Bobby Bishop, a World War II bomber pilot who went missing on a mission over Germany, and the U.S. Army’s efforts to identify his and his crew’s remains and to return them to their families. The story tells of how the son of English immigrants returned to England to fight for freedom, the agony the family endured not knowing his fate, and the fact that the Army found and identified him from remains “small enough to hold in two hands.”

▶Beast Corps: Latest on Oil (May 14, 2010): Mobile, Ala. correspondent Dawn Butler reports on the tar balls hitting Dauphin Island. ▶Beast Corps: British Petroleum’s Greenwashing is a Slick Joke (May 15, 2010): Jamie Welch reports on the BP marketing machine and its “Beyond Petroleum” campaign. ▶Beast Corps: Notes on Meek’s Forum on Offshore Drilling (May 17, 2010): Logan Harrison gives his notes on

4. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM BP

Past experiences with BP may point to future issues May 13, 2010 While Northwest Florida prepared for the BP crude oil set to hit its beaches and waterways, the IN took a break from the endless series of press conferences and babble from the “BP Barbies” to talk with experts who have investigated and dealt with British Petroleum in other disasters. The IN interviewed Greg Palast, investigative reporter for BBC Television and The Guardian newspaper, who investigated the Exxon Valdez incident for the Alaskan natives, and Texas attorney Brent Coon, who battled BP over a refinery explosion in Texas that killed 15 people and injured 170 workers

Congressman Kendrick Meek’s visit to Pensacola. ▶Beast Corps: Watch Out for the Valdez Crud (May 18, 2010): Jen Bullock interviews Merle Savage who is battling health issues after helping with the Exxon Valdez cleanup. ▶Beast Corps: Hiding Behind Hotlines (May 20, 2010): Ryne Ziemba finds out who is answering the phones at the BP call centers. ▶Beast Corps: Cabinet Visits Escambia County (June 4, 2010): Franklin Hayes reports on Gov. Charlie Crist’s visit to Pensacola. ▶Beast Corps: 594 Birds, 250 Sea Turtles Dead (June 9, 2010): Jen Bullock interviews Kelly Overton, director of People Protecting Animals & Their Habitats. Professional photographer Kim Carmichael and Pensacola Beach homeowners sent us several photos that we published online. Joe Vinson, Kevin Wheatley and Chris Hsu sent us designs that we used for our covers for “What to Expect from BP” (May 13), “Perception to Reality” (June 10) and “The Rant Issue” (June 17), respectively.

and residents. From them, we learned BP’s battle plan for dealing with the media and the public in coming months.

5. WHERE’S BUD BILLINGS’ MONEY?

That question remains unanswered a year after the grisly murders of the Beulah couple July 8, 2010 The night of the murders of Bud and Melanie Billings, their daughter, Ashley Billings Markham, told the investigators that her father carried large sums of money in a briefcase because of his business—as much as $100,000. When former business associate Henry “Cab” Tice was interviewed on “Dateline NBC,” he told reporter Keith Morrison, “Bud normally carried $20,000 in cash in his briefcase.”

No briefcase filled with money was ever found. The State Attorney’s Office and Markham’s attorney, Robert Beasley, say that there wasn’t such a briefcase missing, but others aren’t so sure.

6. THE CANDY MAN STUMBLES

Claims czar Feinberg rebuilds trust Sept. 23, 2010 Ken Feinberg, head of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, promised to streamline the BP claims process and put generous checks into locals’ hands before they lost their homes and businesses. With $20 billion in the fund established by BP, Feinberg, who had handled claims for the 9/11 disaster, Agent Orange and the Virginia Tech massacre, became “The Candy Man” for the Gulf Coast.

Unfortunately, Feinberg and his operation stumbled out of the box when BP handed over the claims process. The claims czar had to barnstorm across the Gulf region in September to repair the process and his reputation.

7. REJECTED

Superintendent refuses final offer for Brownsville school Nov. 18, 2010 The pastor of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church had to give it one more try on Friday, Nov. 12. He knew that the Superintendent of Schools didn’t want him there and that his appearance may open him and his congregation up to criticism and scorn again.

On the surface, the church’s plan was simple: purchase the abandoned, aging Brownsville Middle School in what the daily newspaper had described as a “poverty-ridden, high-crime neighborhood” and convert it into a community center. Rev. LuTimothy May walked into the school board workshop at the J. E. Hall Center knowing that Superintendent Malcolm Thomas had rejected the church’s final offer of $500,000 and refused to bring any recommendation on it to the board. However, he owed his trustees, congregation and the community one final attempt. Thomas didn’t budge. The school board refused to overrule him and the school remains vacant.

FEEDING THE BEAST

BP disaster coverage propels IN to national scene

T

he IN expanded its reach beyond local boundaries when IN publisher Rick Outzen became a contributor to the national news website “The Daily Beast” (thedailybeast.com). In 2009, Outzen created a stir with his articles on the murders of Byrd and Melanie Billings, which led to him being profiled by The New York Times and within spots on “Dateline NBC” and TLC’s “Home Invasion Murders.” The BP disaster propelled IN and its publisher to a new level. The stories— many of which also were published in the IN—gave a behind-the-scenes look at the largest man-made environmental disaster in U.S. history and increased threefold the online readership of inweekly.net and ricksblog.biz.

THE DAILY BEAST ARTICLES

Read online: thedailybeast.com/author/ rick-outzen/ ▶BP Tries Damage Control (May 3, 2010): BP has dispatched a "litigation mitigation team" to the Gulf, offering money to local fishermen and business owners. ▶BP's Payoffs Backfire (May 4, 2010): The oil giant behind the spill is now apologizing after trying to get local fishermen to waive legal rights in exchange for $5,000. ▶BP's $25 Million Insult (May 4, 2010): BP took credit yesterday for $25 million grants to states affected by the spill, but officials say they'll blow through that within days. ▶A Florida Official Calls the Feds on BP (May 6, 2010): As oil spill victims await compensation, gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink says the petroleum giant doesn’t have a clue. ▶How BP Secretly Buys PR (May 19, 2010): Besides a stealth TV “tourism” campaign, BP is giving its local agents a

(May 21, 2010): We discover the clerk of the judicial panel who will decide where the BP lawsuits will be tried is the first cousin of a former regulator of the sunken BP drill platform. ▶BP's Shocking Memo (May 25, 2010): The infamous “Three Little Pigs” memo shows that BP, in a previous fatal disaster, increased worker risk to save money. ▶BP's Windfall to the Rich (June 3, 2010): Exposing major problems with the Vessels of Opportunity program ▶How It Played in the Gulf (June 16, 2010): Gulf Coast’s reactions to watching President Obama’s Oval Office speech on the Gulf Coast ▶Cautious Optimism in the Gulf (July 16, 2010): The Florida seaport town of Pensacola has seen BP’s efforts to cap the well fail before. A report reveals that a law enacted after the Exxon Valdez to avoid future oil spills was deprived of cash by lawmakers.

8. JUSTICE SERVED

Inside the Gonzalez murder trial Nov. 4, 2010 Real murder trials aren’t like “Perry Mason,” where a witness collapses on the

stand and admits guilt, or “Matlock,” when investigator Conrad McMasters finds a missing eyewitness at the last minute. They aren’t even like “Law & Order,” where the case is neatly closed in 60 minutes. When news broke of the home invasion and murder

TOP 10 NEWS AND BUZZ ARTICLES By IN Staff

The IN staff spent more time on the road this year traveling to Tallahassee for a Tea Party rally, Washington, D.C. for the labor unions’ feeble attempt to counter Glenn Beck and to New Orleans to hear what the political professionals had to say about the midterm elections. We also broke news about leaky pipes, naughty emails, a botched Watergate-type dirty trick and sales tax audits.

1. LEAKY PIPE DAMPENS BROWNSVILLE DEAL

Jan. 14, 2010 IN discovered that the closed Brownsville Middle School had a damaged underground pipe that leaked nearly 1.4 million gallons. No big deal, right? It is a big deal when the Escambia County School District is trying to sell the school “as is” for $1 million to Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.

2. IN CRASHES PARTY

April 22, 2010 The IN staff traveled to Tallahassee on April 15 to report on the “We the People Rally,” hosted by the Tea Party. Our YouTube videos of the event, featuring a purple Spiderman, Ben Franklin and angry protesters, became viral hits on the Internet.

3. CITY ATTORNEY BLASTED

Aug. 19, 2010 IN posted the infamous emails of City Attorney Rusty Wells. At the Pensacola City Council’s request, City Manager Al Coby requested the emails be returned. We refused.

4. BUBBA-GATE

May 6, 2010 The IN first broke on Rick’s Blog the story of Mark Clabaugh, a George Touart supporter, being arrested for allegedly attempting to break into the home of Karen Sindel, Touart’s opponent for Escambia County commissioner. The IN followed up with this article that gave a brief history into dirty trick operations in Escambia County.

5. ESP SALES TAX PROBLEM

of a wealthy couple with nine special needs children, Pensacola was inundated with reporters. Press conferences were held daily as new information was released. The networks would break into regular programming to broadcast the latest reports. For six weeks, told the IN the letters were required by federal law. However, the IN found no such requirement to word the letters as local principals were instructed to do. In fact, the Mississippi Department of Education advised against listing specific subgroups that didn’t make adequate progress.

7. FIGHTING FATHERS

Dec. 2, 2010 IN reported on the website FightingFathersofDistrict1.com, which has taken on the local judicial system and its recent rulings in family law cases.

8. 2010: THE MIDTERM RUMBLE

Oct. 28, 2010 IN reported on a panel discussion at The Daily Beast’s Innovators Summit held in New Orleans. The panel featured BC’s chief political correspondent George Stephanopoulos and included James Carville, political consultant; Harold Ford, Jr., executive vice chairman of Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Democratic Leadership Council chair; Howard Kurtz, Washington bureau chief for The Daily Beast; and Leslie Sanchez, founder and CEO of Impacto Group, LLC. The panel’s discussion focused upon the midterm elections.

Nov. 25, 2010 IN broke the story on local businesses being hit with ESP bills for sales taxes going back to 2006. A state sales tax audit determined the City of Pensacola owed $343,258 in back sales taxes because of miscoded customer information.

9. FUNGI VS. THE BP OIL SPILL

6. ELEMENTARY LETTER CONTROVERSY

10. ONE NATION WORKING TOGETHER

Sept. 16, 2010 The letters the Escambia County School District sent home to explain each school’s FCAT grades created a controversy when some principals singled out AfricanAmerican and Economically Disadvantaged students for not making adequate yearly progress. Superintendent Malcolm Thomas

July 8, 2010 IN had an exclusive interview with Paul Stamets, a renowned mycologist who believes his discovery of the oyster mushroom’s appetite for oil particles could help fight the BP oil disaster. Oct. 7, 2010 IN reported on the “One Nation Working Together” rally held Oct. 2 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to bolster support for Democratic candidates. Needless to say, it had little impact on the Nov. 2 general election, which saw the Republicans take control of the U.S. House.

the investigation captivated the nation. The trial of Leonard Patrick Gonzalez, Jr. for the home invasion robbery and murders of Byrd and Melanie Billings was over in five days. Monday was jury selection. Pat Poff, as he is also known, was found guilty of the murders. The jury recommended the death penalty, and he now awaits Judge Nicholas Geeker’s final ruling.

9. A CYCLE OF INJUSTICE?

A 1974 death reflects present-day frustrations with Steen case March 25, 2010 Many who either witnessed or were a part of the protests involving the death of local teen Victor Steen viewed the marches, city council meetings, and the coroner's inquest with both awe and frustration. At times, it isn't difficult to compare similarities between the protests that have happened as a result of Steen's death to the marches and protests that occurred surrounding the death rattle of segregation in the South. While there have been many local incidents in the past several decades of deaths at the hands of law enforcement officers with no indictment by the State Attorney's Office, there is one incident which transpired in Pensacola in 1974 that particularly brings to mind the frustrations felt by those calling for further investigation into the death of Victor Steen: the death of Wendel Sylvester Blackwell.

10. COMING ASHORE

DeLuna Fest weekend is finally upon us Oct. 14, 2010 The Pensacola Beach festival wasn’t our event. The organizers had promised all the interviews with the big name acts like Bush, Daughtry and Stone Temple Pilots to the daily newspaper, but that didn’t stop us from covering the biggest music event of the year for the Pensacola area. We devoted most of the issue to DeLuna Fest with interviews from The Submarines, Better than Ezra, The Honey Island Swamp Band, The Revivalists, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Kermit Ruffins, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Michael Franti. SPECI A L A DV ER T ISING SEC T ION DECEMBER 2 010

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION SEASON IS HERE LOCAL EXPERTS MAKE 2011 GOALS ATTAINABLE BY IN STAF F

Resolution: To invest more in me! We're worth it! What are some tips for those of us looking to upgrade ourselves in the New Year?

IN knows New Year’s Resolutions are hard to keep. Heck, we’ve had the same one—get rich quick—for 11 years and counting. However, you’re not alone on your journey. Local experts are here to help you achieve your goals for the New Year and to help you all along the way. You’ve got the whole year ahead of you. Here’s to achieving all of your New Year’s Resolutions. We’ll still keep working at getting rich.

Resolution: To make fitness and exercise a priority We all have good intentions, but we're not perfect. What are some New Year's Resolution pitfalls regarding fitness people should avoid?

where you are starting. You must set realistic goals so that you do not get discouraged. When it comes to variety, you have to incorporate variety in order to see results. Going out and doing the exact same exercises every day is not going to produce very good results. Find things that you enjoy and incorporate them into your exercise routine.”—Kenzie Presnell, Fixed on Fitness

“Small changes, like eliminating lines and wrinkles, having glowing skin, or losing those extra holiday pounds can go a long way to helping you look and feel your best in the New Year. The Skin Care Center at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery offers the latest in injectables like Botox, Restylane and Juvederm that literally erase wrinkles. Facials using medical-grade products will give the skin a radiant glow. Laser treatment such as IPL and Fractional Skin Resurfacing will undo sun damage and age spots. The Weight Loss Clinic, directed by Shannon Caluda, M.D., offers effective weight loss designed to address each patient's individual concerns. The Skin Care Center also offers permanent makeup by Trinkette, body treatments, sunless tanning and massage therapy.” —Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery

"FIND THINGS THAT YOU ENJOY AND INCORPORATE THEM INTO YOUR EXERCISE ROUTINE.” —KENZIE PRESNELL, FIXED ON FITNESS

“Forget about New Year's resolutions. They're a waste of time, and we almost always break them and then feel lousy because we do. Do the best you can, when you can, and as much as you can. And do it all for somebody else, not yourself.” —Nancy LaNasa, Abhaya Yoga Center “When it comes to New Year's resolutions, the biggest pitfalls regarding fitness that people should avoid include setting unrealistic goals, as well as lack of variety in an exercise routine. As far as goals, you always should remember

"WHY NOT ADD SOMETHING THAT FEELS GOOD BUT ADDS HEALTH AND PEACE TO YOUR WEEK? ANY TYPE OF SPA TREATMENT CAN ALLOW YOU TO PAUSE, REFRESH AND HEAL." —MARY ANNE AANESTAD, STILL WATERS DAY & MEDICAL SPA

“Get rid of those brown spots that have been bugging you all year. Start the New Year with clear skin. Get IPL or fractional CO2 resurfacing. It seems like everyone is getting Botox. Maybe it is time for you to try it. There is a reason so many people keep getting it. Try it! Maybe the New Year is the right time to get on a new skin care regimen. Consider SkinMedica. Real science, with the highest available percentage of skin growth factors.”—Dr. Kevin Welch, The Skin Care Center, Medical Center Clinic “Too many people wait until they are “drowning” to seek help. Our mission at Escape Wellness Spa is to catch you BEFORE you fall in. Stress takes its toll on the body, mind and spirit in many ways. From chronic pain to

skin disorders, lay your burdens down at Escape Wellness Spa and leave feeling refreshed, renewed and revived. Put your best face forward by treating your skin to the ultimate care with our being TRUE facials and cosmetics. We will help you look and feel your best. Call us at 478-2273 and let us help you escape and feel better!”— Escape Wellness Spa “Most of us with hectic schedules are trying to squeeze 30 hours into a 24-hour day. The body needs rest to build immunity, heal, and reduce stress. Most New Year’s resolutions require us to quit something we desire (but is bad for us) or add an activity to our already busy schedule. Why not add something that feels good but adds health and peace to your week? Any type of spa treatment can allow you to pause, refresh and heal. Massage has been shown to increase endorphins, which make us feel euphoric and refreshed.”—Mary Anne Aanestad, Still Waters Day & Medical Spa “Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery is proud to offer the region's best in surgical and nonsurgical procedures to help you reach your goal of looking great in 2011. If you have considered body contouring (liposuction), breast enhancement surgery or a tummy tuck, now is the time to come in and talk to Dr. Peter Butler or Dr. Jocelyn Leveque. Both are board-certified plastic surgeons and have achieved national recognition for excellence in the field of cosmetic surgery. The caring team of professionals at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery can answer all your questions, including financing options, and help you decide if plastic surgery is right for you. By having your surgery now, you will be ready to hit the beach by spring.” —Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery

“Confidence in our appearance can affect all areas of our lives. Making new friends, dating or asking for a promotion at work can seem less difficult if we are not concerned with how we look. Why not invest in the one area that everyone sees: your face? Still Waters offers many options to improve your natural beauty and even reduce visible aging: IPL for aging and acne, light to moderate chemical peels, microdermabrasion and even Botox and fillers for those irritating wrinkles!”—Mary Anne Aanestad, Still Waters Day & Medical Spa

Resolution: To make my overall health and wellness a priority What are some tips for those of us looking to focus on our overall health and wellness in the New Year? “My specialty is stress reduction. More studies are showing the relationship with stress and overall health and well being, especially the cortisol connection. The body is its own healer, but

sometimes it needs a kick start and some support. That is the beauty of acupuncture. The reason it can treat so many health issues is that it simply stimulates the body to do its own healing.”—Bonnie McLean, O.M.D., A.P., R.N. “Get your testosterone levels checked. Ensuring your testosterone levels are correct can help a man maintain low body fat and provide a higher energy level."—Dr. Charles Yowell, Baptist Medical Group “West Florida Healthcare is proud to offer our free 24/ 7 physician referral/health information/class registration services: Consult-A-Nurse. “I recommend eye exams every two years for healthy patients and yearly for those with medical disorders like high blood pressure or diabetes. We also recommend wearing sunglasses when outside to protect your eyes from the UV rays in this ‘Sunshine State’.”—Dr. Jennifer Murray, Medical Center Clinic “Healthy choices are the cornerstone of wellness. Proper maintenance is crucial. At Pensacola Wellness Solutions, fine tuning of hormones is one way of getting the best performance out of the machine. It is about looking good, feeling good and being healthy.”—Dr. Ken Mitchell, Pensacola Wellness Solutions “Gone are the days of waiting months for an appointment with a physician. Many family medicine practices like mine offer convenient, open access hours where you can walk in and be seen right away or call for a same-day appointment. There's no excuse to put off seeing a doctor for an ailment, issue or lagging concern you may have. Come on in, we're here to help.” Dr. John Molyneaux, Baptist Medical Group, Navarre “The first step to good health is to have a primary care physician and to

know your family's health history. Is there a history of heart disease? Breast cancer? Colon cancer? Diabetes? Regular check-ups can catch these early, when these diseases are more amenable to treatment.” —Sacred Heart Health System

“Mark your calendar for healthy living expos where health experts are onhand to inform you about proper health and wellness.”—Dr. Ole Oleson, Baptist Walk-In Care “Hypnosis is a powerful tool in the creation of a healthy, fulfilling, dynamic life. By changing the way we think about ourselves and the world, we can permanently transform toxic habits into healthy ones. Anything else is merely a temporary fix of the symptoms, not the cause.” —Susan Dunlop, M.A., C.H.T., A Luminous Life Hypnotherapy “I encourage all of my patients to walk daily, keep as active as possible, eat as healthy as they can, and laugh out loud every day.”—Dr. Sangeeta Patil, Baptist Medical Group

Resolution: To update my look! It’s not 1994 anymore. What are some tips for those of us wanting to update our tired tresses? “Update your style in the New Year with a Keratin treatment by Coppola to rejuvenate, revitalize, refresh and defrizz your new look, whether it be a cut or color. Sass it up with a chignon bun, frame your face with "Balayage," or take the plunge and cut a heavy "Fringe" for the winter months.—Brittany and Hurst, VolumeONE

health & wellness h&w Resolution: To quit smoking What are some tips for those of us looking to nix this bad habit in the New Year? “Quitting smoking is vital to good health. The benefits of quitting smoking are immediate and multiply over time. Free smoking-cessation classes are offered at all three Sacred Heart Hospitals from Pensacola to Miramar Beach to Port St. Joe. Those aged 55+ can take advantage of free health screenings at the SENIORSpirit! Health Fair on Jan. 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Conference Center on Ninth Avenue. For more information about Sacred Heart Medical Group physicians and Sacred Heart Health System services, visit sacred-heart.org.”—Sacred Heart Health System “If you smoke cigarettes, seek help from a primary care physician who can offer you assistance in smoking cessation. If you stop smoking, your health and the health of those around you will be better for it.”—Dr. Sangeeta Patil, Baptist Medical Group

Resolution: To lose weight What are some tips for those of us looking to finally win the Battle of the Bulge in the New Year? “Many times we make the decision to lose weight for the New Year, but following through can be very difficult. Deciding on when to start is one of those obstacles. The longer we procrastinate, the lesser the chance of us making it happen. Another obstacle is the concern for cost. Adding weight over the years is not inexpensive in itself, however. We found that most of our clients were saving money because they were eating out less, were able to shop in their closets and often were able to reduce their prescription costs. The biggest pitfall probably is getting discouraged. It is hard to do it alone. Dieting with a diet partner or even in a weight loss program with supportive staff is very important. Also, setting achievable goals and having your results measured in more ways than just weight is essential. Body measurements, bioelectric impedance analysis and blood pressure and blood sugar checks are also indicators of weight loss success.”—Rika Edge, Physician’s WEIGHT LOSS Centers “Weight loss is the number one New Year’s resolution. It is also one of the resolutions with the top failure rate. Weight loss can be slow in the beginning,

but adding a treatment that produces results with a modest price can give someone the motivation to keep up with their diet or exercise. Still Waters Slim Wrap can reduce circumferential measurements to give you that extra reward.

COUNTDOWN TO 2011

THE BE ST PLACE S TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR IN PENSACOLA BY JENNIE MCKEON hether you need a crowded bar to find a stranger to kiss at midnight, or you want to indulge in a fourcourse dinner, Pensacola is where you want to make those New Year’s resolutions Friday, Dec. 31.

W

PENSACOLA PELICAN DROP

The most popular of the events will likely be the Pensacola Pelican Drop in downtown Pensacola. The party begins at 5 p.m. on Intendencia Street at the CAT Country/International Paper Stage. At 8 p.m. the 13-foot pelican, with more than 1,500 lights, will make its appearance. Once the clock strikes midnight, the pelican will drop from 100 feet above the ground and fireworks will begin. According to the Pensacola Pelican Drop press release, the event brings 40,000 people to downtown Pensacola. If you’re afraid of being trampled, you can catch live footage on WEAR-TV 3, but it won’t be the same. For more information, visit pensacolapelicandrop.com.

SEVILLE QUARTER

The party starts at 7 p.m. at Seville Quarter, where you can choose just how crazy you want to get with various New Year’s Eve events. Live entertainment will be at Rosie O’Grady’s, including the world famous dueling piano show, and DJ Trey will be spinning at Phineas Phogg’s. You can purchase the Membership Party Package in advance for $30 ($35 at the door), which includes a 2011 membership card and entry to all four stages. For $20, you can dance the night away—the cover charge gives you access to all the rooms in the main complex. All Seville Quarter guests will receive party favors and a Cristalino Brut Cava toast at midnight. With the Stay and Play Package, you get a room at the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown and the Residence Inn by Marriott, two Membership Party Packages, complementary shuttling to and from the parties, breakfast at your hotel, a “morning after” survival kit and late checkout to boot. The Stay and Play Package is $189 per couple. To make your reservation, call Courtyard by Marriott at 439-3330 or Residence Inn by Marriott at 432-0202.

As if Seville wasn’t celebrating enough, Heritage Hall will be hosting a gourmet wine dinner prepared by Executive Chef Brandon Melton at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. The cost is $99 per couple. Afterwards, you can dance off your dinner at any of the rooms in Seville Quarter. For more information, go to sevillequarter.com.

After dinner, check out The Fish House Deck Bar. Video DJ V-J D-MIXX will provide the entertainment. Complementary party hats, noisemakers, streamers and a champagne toast will be provided. For those who skip the dinner, the dance party is free. To make a reservation, call the Events Coordinator at 433-9450.

PENSACOLA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AT SAENGER THEATRE

JACKSON’S STEAKHOUSE

Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Chris Vadala will join the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra as part of the POPS! Concert Series. Jazz and big band favorites will help ring in the New Year on a good note. The event starts at 7 p.m., and tickets range from $20-$67. To purchase tickets or to find out more, visit pensacolasymphony.com.

THE FISH HOUSE

The Fish House is celebrating with its double threats: great food and dancing. Starting at 6 p.m., The Fish House will offer a special menu for the New Year created by Chef Billy Ballou. The four-course menu will be paired with wines selected by Beverage Director William Morris and Premier Beverage Company. The menu includes sweet and spicy shrimp over a fresh thyme and fried green tomato stack finished with a crawfish butter sauce paired with Alexander Valley Vineyards New Gewürz, North Coast Gewürztraimer 2008. There are two seating times for the dinner, 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., and the cost is $100 per person.

Jackson’s will be hosting a threecourse dinner at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the President’s Room. Chef Irv Miller will be preparing the menu, which includes entrées such as grilled grouper with seared diver scallop, Zinfandel mustard and pine-nut-crusted filet mignon and sumac, and rosemary-rubbed grilled rack of lamb. Bottomless champagne and pianist Al Martin, who will be taking requests all night long, will complement the dinner. The cost per person is $125 and includes party favors and valet parking. To accommodate those with early New Year’s Eve plans, Jackson’s will be open at 5 p.m. serving from their fall/winter dinner menu. After the Pelican drops, you can catch Al Martin’s final set and receive complementary Hoppin’ John. To make a reservation, call 469-9898.

SLUGGO’S/THE HANDLEBAR/ MCGUIRE’S IRISH PUB/ FLORA-BAMA

checking out include Sluggo’s, which is hosting a local showcase all night long. For details, call 791-6501. At The Handlebar, you can celebrate “New Year’s Evil” featuring Parabellum. Call 434-9060 for more information. illiam Howell is a bundle of energy, to say the least. A mild-mannered multimedia specialist working at a downtown business by day, he is a performer, recording star and father for the rest of the 24-hour period. He has been creating music in Pensacola for quite a while now—for free. Over the past 10 years, he has been performing on Public Radio International (PRI) with a group of local musicians, producing holiday music in unique and original styles. Now, he and some of those same musicians are performing live on PRI and at various Pensacola locations. Being as efficient as possible, William gathered some of the best musicians in town at the PRI studio to record customized holiday songs, while giving away the CDs for free. Much of the time musicians have to play or sing a certain way, but with these recordings and subsequent gifts, they were able to be completely free and creative. To date, 5,000 CDs have been given to the public. The group, called The 18 String Army, plays in local establishments such as The Global Grill, The Leisure Club, Hopjacks Pizza Kitchen & Taproom, and The Drowsy Poet. We caught up with William on the job in downtown Pensacola.

Gypsy jazz was huge as well. When I was in Seattle, there was grunge. While in Chicago…well, you know, I absorbed whatever was going on while I was in each place.

IN: Are you a native Pensacolian? Howell: No—being in a military family, I am from all over the place. New Orleans was one of our stops as a family, and that was a big influence. There was a big hip-hop scene in New Orleans; it opened my eyes.

[There is a documentary being made about Howell’s holiday music project. The documentary filmmaker Steve Moody was present during the interview. He gave us his insight on what William has been creating. Moody: He wanted to tell the story of how it

IN: Did music help you relate to new people as you moved around? Howell: It turns out that sports stats, of all

kinds, are a great way to fit in. So I learned stats for different kinds of sports and was able to make friends that way. IN: How and why did you create a customized holiday song CD? Howell: Because the meaning of the holiday has been lost in the sea of commercialism. I had been working with all of these musicians and thought about what a great collaborative effort it would be to make holiday songs the way we want. All ideas were welcome; we all worked together. Individually, each musician is able to shine outside the band they normally play in. It is the fruit of our labor, and we were able to give a gift that meant a lot.

IN: Do your live shows always consist of the same musicians? Howell: There are four musicians other than myself: Ashley Pennewill on mandolin, Michael Danielson on upright bass, Travis Jackson on drums, Jonathan Clark on violin and myself on guitar and banjo. Sometimes we play a duo, a trio or a quartet. IN: Where can we see your band next? Howell: This is the schedule so far: Dec. 18 we are at The Drowsy Poet, Dec. 24 we will be at Hopjacks, Dec. 25 we will be at The Fish House and, last but not least, we are scheduled for a private party on Dec. 26. IN: Do you cover others’ music, or are you performing all original pieces? Howell: I am working on a solo album. But, during the live performances, we are covering a little jazz, bluegrass and gypsy jazz. We go back and forth. IN: Who are your top three musical influences? Howell: So much of that depends on the day, the hour and the mood I am in. It is so hard to categorize that into a top three. So many things are woven together. I like classical of all types. I like Béla Fleck, Gillian Welch… there are so many. Influences come from a musical journey. Acoustic music is most interesting played on parlor instruments. IN: Are you still creating visual art? Howell: My creative need is filled at work. I am allowed to be creative here in other ways. The arms work was a self-portrait: what do I know better than my hands? I could pick them out of a lineup. IN: What is next for you and The 18 String Army? Howell: Playing music all over town and taking advantage of every opportunity. We are excited about the future. Be sure to check out the band’s current shows and dates, which are posted on their Facebook page, at facebook.com/pages/ The-18-String-Army/160766160628081. info@inweekly.net

news of the weird THE CABRAL CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP in Manteca, Calif., was so desperate for a sale in October that one of its employees picked up potential customer Donald Davis, 67, at his nursing home, brought the pajamasand-slippers-clad, dementia-suffering resident in to sign papers, handed him the keys to his new pickup truck (with the requested chrome wheels!), and sent him on his way (even tossing Davis’ wheelchair into the truck’s bed as Davis sped away). Shortly afterward, Davis led police on a high-speed chase 50 miles from Manteca. He was stopped and detained (but at a hospital the next morning, he passed away from heart failure). The Cabral salesman said Davis had called him twice the day before, insisting on buying a new truck. CULTURAL DIVERSITY At an out-of-theway Iranian cemetery on the border with Turkmenistan lies an ancient burial ground guarded by a majestic tower and marked with headstones, some of which resemble penises and some of which resemble breasts, supposedly in honor of the prophet Khalid Nabi, who was born a Christian but who became a hero of Islam when his daughter visited the Prophet Muhammad and converted her father. The site is growing in popularity among young Iranians, but officials struggle to embrace it fully as a tourist destination. LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Imagine the surprise in November when a burglar rummaging through the St. Benno Church in Munich, Germany, was suddenly attacked. He had bent down to open the donation box, and just then, a statue of St. Antonius fell on top of him, momentarily knocking him to the floor and forcing him to flee empty-handed. MIXED MESSAGE: Larry Falter, the owner of a Superior, Wis., jewelry store and an elder in a local messianic church, began staging in November a “Second Coming” sale, supposedly to commemorate the Day of the Lord when Jesus returns, triggering the Apocalypse. Among the responses by local residents: Why would anyone planning to be taken away need jewelry anyway, and, especially, why would Falter need to sell his jewelry instead of just giving it away? (Falter said that he owes money to people right now and is obliged to pay them back as best he can before departing.) QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS In November, Singapore’s Information Ministry denounced the country’s water polo team for wearing swim trunks in a likeness of the nation’s flag (stars and a crescent)— especially since, on the men’s trunks, the inch-thick, 5-inch-long crescent is placed vertically on the front in what appears to be an “are you glad to see me?” design. The team’s manager denied even the “slightest intention” of insulting the country.

BY CHUCK SHEPPARD • An unnamed plumber in Stockholm, Sweden, was arrested in August for attempting to procure sex from an underage girl after he had confronted the girl’s father on the telephone. According to the plumber, the girl’s sex services were advertised on the Internet, and the plumber paid online and scheduled a session, but the girl failed to show up. The plumber somehow found the girl’s home telephone number and demanded a refund from her father, who reported him to police.

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES “Dr.” Berlyn Aussieahshowna, 37, was arrested in Boise, Idaho, in November and charged with practicing medicine without a license after she convinced at least two women to let her fondle their breasts under the guise that she was performing a breast “exam.” According to police investigators, Aussieahshowna is neither a doctor nor even Berlyn Aussieahshowna. She is Kristina Ross, and is not even a biological female, although she was identified in a 2004 arrest as a male-to-female transsexual. Authorities were puzzled why the two women were duped since both times, “Dr.” Aussieahshowna performed her “consultations,” including the exams, in bars. UPDATE When News of the Weird reported in 2004 on Disney fanatic George Reiger of Bethlehem, Pa., he was in full glory, with a 5,000-piece collection of Disney character and movie memorabilia and some 2,000 tattoos covering almost all of his body. He said then that he had been married six times, but that each wife had left him, unable to compete with Disney for his affection. In November 2010, Reiger, now 56, opening up to The Philadelphia Inquirer, admitted that he had not been married at all and was in fact extremely lonely in his Disney obsession, but that he had finally found the love of a woman and wanted to end his fanaticism and remove the tattoos. BRIGHT IDEAS Robbery Modus Operandi: (1) Caroline Slusher, 32, and two associates were indicted in Willoughby, Ohio, in the November “armed” robbery of a BP gas station convenience store. After a clerk caught Slusher shoplifting, Slusher raised her arm menacingly and threatened to touch the clerk, claiming she was infected with the highly destructive bacteria MRSA. The clerk backed off, and the three f led. (2) Nakita Norman, 44, aided by two distracting associates, was captured on surveillance video stuffing two fur coats down the front of her pants, directly into the crotch area, and departing the Sword Furs store in Westlake, Ohio. Norman was arrested based on informants’ tips. Send your Weird News to Chuck Shepherd, P.O. Box 18737, Tampa, Fla., 33679 or weirdnews@earthlink.net, or go to www.NewsoftheWeird.com. What do you appreciate most about your friends? The understanding that life is not about always having to see each other, because let’s be honest—sometimes we’re too busy to have a social life. All it takes is the time for a phone call to catch up. Who is your favorite hero in fiction? I don’t really have one, but my non-fiction hero is my great grandfather—a man of few words who touched the lives of so many. I never had the opportunity to meet him. Who is your favorite heroine in fiction? Again, I don’t really have one either, but my non-fiction heroines are my mother, grandmother and wife. Without these people in my life, who knows where I would be today. Thank you for all the support and unconditional love. What is the best thing you have ever won? I recently found out that some of my work is being published in a “best of” logo book. What did your mother always tell you? That I could do anything I wanted to do.
