“DUST OFF YOUR WEEZER SNUGGIE AND GET READY FOR SOME MUSIC.”
Greatest Hits
The IN has been running DeLuna coverage for months now—because we knew there were way too many good bands to fit into one issue. And we were right. Here are some of our favorite quotes from past DeLuna Fest features:
There’s so much to look forward to this weekend
at DeLuna Fest that we honestly had a hard time putting this issue together. Well, maybe not putting it together, but narrowing down our interview “wish” list and making it fit into one issue was definitely a problem. I mean — have you seen the line-up? It’s pretty freakin’ great. There are mega rock stars (Jane’s Addiction), indie icons (The Shins), and plenty of up-andcoming indie icons (like Givers and Ra Ra Riot). And as if that wasn’t enough, they went ahead and threw in a hip-hip icon (Big Boi) and a rockabilly icon (Wanda Jackson) just for good measure. Even that only scratches the surface. We didn’t mention the amazing New Orleans heavyhitters that will be taking over the Gulf Winds Jazz & Heritage Stage all weekend long. Or the late night, electronic dance party magic that is bound to happen at the Wind Creek stage, with acts like Girl Talk and Cut Copy. And that’s only the music aspect of the weekend. We are also looking forward to hanging out on the beach and not sweating our asses off. Be honest, you are, too. Also on our list: eating at some of our favorite beach restaurants like Sidelines, Peg Leg Pete’s and hopefully Laguna’s for brunch on Sunday before the Fest. And after hours partying
at places like Paradise, The Sandshaker and Paddy O’Leary’s. Because like any local will tell you — our beach really is the biggest rock star appearing at DeLuna Fest this weekend. In an attempt to help you get as excited as we are, we’ve put together a pretty comprehensive guide. We’ve got tons of interviews— ranging from the super famous like Weezer, to some of the lesser known bands that we really wish were super famous, like Asobi Seksu. And because we honestly would hate for you to miss your favorite band or get lost looking for a Porta Potty, we’ve included an official festival map and schedule. Feel free to tear those pages out and bring them with you. It’s what all the cool kids are doing. Well, it’s at least what we’re doing. And don’t get too worried if you haven’t bought your ticket — you haven’t missed out on DeLuna Fest YET. Weekend passes and single day tickets will be available at the gate. They are also offering a special called “Bring A Guest To The Fest,” so if you bought yourself a three-day weekend pass but have a freeloading friend who’s been holding out, you can bring them with you for free. We just suggest you make them buy your beer and snacks all weekend as a “thank you” for the getting them in. So pack up your sunscreen, charge your iPhone battery and dust off your Weezer Snuggie (if you’re lucky enough to have one) and get ready for some music. We’ll see you on the beach! {in}
MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA “For me it will seem like a hometown show… It is crazy to still be on Pensacola’s radar after all this time, but it will be cool to come back and express thanks to Pensacola for being a part of Manchester’s past and supporting us.” ~ Tim Very, drummer Interview by Sarah McCartan, originally appeared in the IN July 21 MATT & KIM “Kim and I were headlining the Siren Festival in Brooklyn, which takes place right on Coney Island, and toward the end I yelled, ‘Who will follow me into the ocean?’ On the last note of the song, I jumped offstage and ran down the dock to the water, and I turned around and there were all these people running with me, like ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ or something.” ~Matt Johnson | Interview by Hana Frenette, originally appeared in the IN Sept. 1 LADYTRON “We realized that it’s not just about good music on stage, but combining the blueprints of the original music and making live music. We added live drums and guitars and since then the live shows have become their own being.” ~ Reuben Wu, keyboardist | Interview by Jennie McKeon, originally appeared in the IN Sept. 15 VOICE OF THE WETLANDS ALL-STARS “I was blessed to grow up in New Orleans, inside a family steeped in culture. “Jack would bump me in the butt with his guitar and I would pretend to strangle him.” - WANDA JACKSON
The Fabulous Mrs. Wanda Jackson by Hana Frenette
photo courtesy of wandajackson.com She’s recorded numerous country hits, dated Elvis and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Recently, 73-year-old first lady of rockabilly Wanda Jackson took some time out to discuss Elvis’s nerves, her daddy’s guitar lessons and Jack White’s sweet old soul. IN: Have you ever played in Pensacola before? WJ: I love to play in Florida. I think I did some work over near Pensacola very early on, maybe when I toured with Elvis, or on a gospel tour. IN: For your latest album, “The Party Ain’t Over,” you worked with Jack White (and The Third Man Records Band). How did that collaboration come about and what was it like working with Jack? WJ: It came about in a strange way. I was talking with my husband and Jim (her pub-
licist) and a friend of ours over dinner one night about what kind of album I’d like to do. We were thinking about something called “Wanda and Friends” that would be collaborations with people I’ve influenced and people who might be glad to work with me. The friend of ours said to me, ‘If you do that, you make sure to call Jack White, he’s a big fan of your music.’ My publicist is a young man, and fearless. He called up Jack and asked him if he’d like to sing a duet on the possible “Friends” album. He said, no, he didn’t. Jack said, ‘I think there ought to be a law against making albums like that.’ He did not want to sing a duet with me, but he said he was interested in recording me. I’d barely heard of him, and I knew he was a big rock star, and I was starting to get a little nervous. I thought, why would a big rock star want to record me? IN: What made you decide to move forward with the album? WJ: Jack offered a deal to do a single, or an album, and we talked about the material, and he said that he didn’t want to change me, or my sound, and then I started to relax a little. We started exchanging ideas for songs, and then he got the tracks together. We worked together just fine. He’s a young man with an old soul. He helped me. He just wanted more and more. More of the real Wanda Jackson out of me. For one of the first shows for the new album we played in NYC. Jack was there to play with me and I thought I was actually opening for him. He looked at me straight and

pushed you toward the newer rockabilly sound of the time. What do you think is the most important thing you took away from working with Elvis? WJ: I think that would be having fun on stage. He was just as nervous as he could be before a show. I’d ask him why he got so nervous and he’d wring his hands and I’d say, ‘All these people love you!’ And he said, ‘But they’ve never seen me perform live, and I don’t want to disappoint them.’ That really endeared him to me. Gosh, he has so much fun. My daddy was a good person to guide me, too. He told me, if you have fun, they’ll have fun. I’ve always tried to keep that in my mind. You learn through the years not to take yourself so seriously.
said, ‘You’re not opening for me, you’re the star!’ He’s so humble and sweet. I just love him. IN: I’ve seen some of the performances promoting the new album and it looks like you and the Third Man Records Band are having so much fun on stage. WJ: The band was very fun to work with, a real high ball of energy. We would goof around. Jack would bump me in the butt with his guitar and I would pretend to strangle him. IN: Will you be bringing the same band with you to DeLuna Fest? WJ: I’ve got wonderful bands all across the country. People really get the best of the music. I think I’ll be bringing the Nashville Hi-Dollars with me, but I’m still not completely sure. Maybe you could look it up and let me know! IN: You’ve been singing since you were very young. How did you get started? WJ: I’ve been recording since my junior year of high school. I had one song go into the top 10 and then another one make it into the top 20 on the country stations in town. I couldn’t travel because I was still in school. When I graduated, my dad said he would go on tour with me, if that’s what I had my sights set on. He dropped his work, and my mother kept her job. We got a booking agent. We didn’t know anything about touring. Then we met Bob Neel, and asked him if he wanted to book me, and he said yes he did. He was also booking a young man about my age named Elvis. IN: You dated and worked with Elvis in the 50s and you said he
IN: It was your father who taught you how to play guitar, wasn’t it? WJ: Yes, and of course he just played chords. As soon as I learned to pick some chords, that was enough for me. I remember learning Jimmy Rogers “The Singing Brakeman” and some other popular songs of the day. They eventually started calling the music Country and Western. How you can remember things from when you were so young. IN: It is amazing what the brain can retain. We are very excited for your performance and will see you at DeLuna! WJ: Yes! I am very much looking forward to it. See you all there. {in}

“It’s like cocaine. Have you ever seen an advertisement for it? No. It always sells; everyone knows where to get it. If you have a good enough product people will come.” To the tune of standup comedian Doug Stanhope, owner of Electrical Guitar Company Kevin Burkett sums up his company, while discounting all the rules of business every marketer learns in school. When you hear six-month waiting line, generally the thought is, ‘thanks, but no thanks.’ However, that is far from reality for EGC when it comes to the demand for their product, custom, built-to-order aluminum guitars. At a time when many companies are struggling to break even, Burkett is swamped with emails. Since 2003, Burkett has been expanding the production of his instruments. He is now up to nearly 600 guitars, many having gone to well known acts including Shellac, The Melvins, Mogwai, Mastadon, Metallica, Isis, Jack’s Mannequin and The Jesus Lizard just to name a few. The best part about the business, aside from it being a dream come true for Burkett, is that everyone approaches him. “It’s kind of the redneck network — someone who knows a guy that knows a guy that knows a guy. And it’s neat, too, because whenever people do call they are really inter-

ested,” Burkett shares. “I don’t sell anything. I can’t. My salesmanship is: if you want it, then fucking take it.” Electrical Guitar Company will be making an appearance at DeLuna Fest this year, providing a custom bass for Scott Shriner of Weezer. The guitar that just last week was one of several necks hanging in waiting along the wall of EGC’s warehouse workspace, will be completed and presented to Shriner at the festival where it will be making its debut on the main stage. Once again in this case, as far as initial contact goes, Shriner reached out to Burkett through an email. Weezer had previously played several shows with Jack’s Mannequin who EGC made a guitar for. “Scott also said he saw Torch and the Melvins” assistant and friend Alex Steward comments. Burkett employed Steward last year to assist and serve as a second pair of hands due to the boom in demand. Initially Burkett was shipping out five or six finished guitars a month and now as a tag team they can churn out the same number in a week. Adding one more player to their team, along with the addition of a new machine that is on the way, will allow them to be able to produce every single piece in-house, start to finish, and carve off a bit of the waiting list in the process. Burkett keeps setting goals, achieving his goals, setting new goals and then surpassing those goals. “No matter what level it gets to, it’s cool,” he said, “but there’s nothing cooler than being the first to plug it in and play it.” All the work that goes into a guitar and then seeing that it works. It’s the feeling, Burkett explains, that was there originally. It’s the feeling that he looks forward to. “The money makes it all work, but what I love is building guitars that are pretty much indestructible and will far out last me,” the craftsman said. {in}

“OH, AND ALSO, BIG BUSHY BEARDS!” - MEG TRAVIS | “THE LEAD SINGER IS SEXY IN THAT PJ HARVEY WAY.” EDWIN BANACIA
You Know How To Pick ‘Em There’s a lot of music on the DeLuna Fest line up that the IN staff is excited about — like you couldn’t tell that already, right? But just in case you are tired of hearing us go on and on about how much we
love Grouplove, we decided to ask a few of our friends and neighbors what they are going to be checking out at the Fest. We asked a local bar owner who also happens to be a hip hop aficionado of sorts. We also asked a music fan from the great city of New Orleans, who’s been to just about every other music festival in the country at least once — most recently Austin City Limits. We also tracked down two members of Team DeLuna Fest (which really wasn’t that hard given that we’re neighbors) and asked them a very important question: Which bands are you going to try and sneak away from your job to watch? Here are their picks for the weekend.
▶Meg’s Picks
CUT COPY In a music world where electronically-produced music is ruling the market, Cut Copy actually gets it right. Their latest album “Zonoscope” weaves together a tightly knit storyline of love and loss where tracks flow seamlessly to the next. Get ready for all dance hell to break loose at their live show. If you’ve never been “that person” who dances at shows, just wait until about two minutes into “Lights and Music.” Your life just might be changed forever. MATT AND KIM I would consider myself a generally happy person about 95 percent of the time. But even my enthusiasm is nothing compared to music duo and real life couple Matt & Kim. They produce a hell of a sound with only a drum kit and a synthesizer. Add that to the contagious energy of Matt, the outrageous things that come out of Kim’s mouth, and crowd participation like you’ve never seen before, and you might just be in for the most fun you’ve ever had in one hour’s time. COLD WAR KIDS When Cold War Kids burst onto the scene in 2006 with their debut album Robbers and Cowards, there was one thing that you could not ignore: that voice. “Hang Me Out to Dry” is undoubtedly their biggest hit (and for good reasons), but you can’t deny that tracks like “Hospital Beds” and the later hit “Something is not Right with Me” really force you to stop and listen to Nathan Willet’s powerful vocals. While their third studio album wasn’t as commercially successful as
their first two, the songs still resonate with longtime fans and newcomers alike. Just listen to “Audience of One” for the catchy hooks and amazing sound that you know and love. MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA True Story: When I got satellite radio for the first time (shameless unpaid endorsement for the awesomeness that IS satellite radio), Manchester Orchestra was the first band that really caught my ear and made me stop and appreciate all the music out there I didn’t even know existed. I fell in love with “I’ve Got Friends” because it’s damn catchy and shows that these guys have some crazy, actual talent. They have maintained a level of excellence in every album they have released, up to the 2011 release of “Simple Math,” in which the title track explores beautiful melodies reminiscent to the early days of Band of Horses. Oh, and also, BIG BUSHY BEARDS! GIVERS You guys might say I’m partial to Givers because they are from Louisiana and I’m from Louisiana, and you know what, you may be right. But just listen to “Up, Up, Up” and I dare you not to fall in love with these indie darlings. They bring a refreshing twist to the scene, playing catchy tunes influenced by the Cajun and zydeco music of their native Lafayette. If being happy is your thing (and if being happy is not your thing, then what?), then give “In Light,” their debut album, a good solid listen. Then, after you catch their set at DeLuna, you will see why they deserve every ounce of success they receive. Meg Travis is a NOLA girl who is making the trip over for DeLuna. She’s an avid show and festival go-er, a DeLuna Defender on Facebook and a House of Blues New Orleans employee — so she knows her stuff when it comes to music. She’ll be in the front row at Cut Copy if you want to say “hi” during the Fest.
▶Ed’s Picks
STARS One of those cool indiepop bands that is influenced by a variety of its contemporaries. Yeah, that sounds like something you’d read from a critic. Truth is, their music touches my soul. Their lyrics make you think and reminisce and miss someone. A-TRAK Just caught him at a free show in NYC. It was free, but I still had to wait in line for two hours. It was worth it. A former battle DJ, turned Kanye West’s DJ, turned producer. A little on the hipster side, but his show is dope. By the way, he won every DJ competition imaginable before he was 15 years old. GIRL TALK You won’t get it in a blurb. Girl Talk challenges what you think you know about intellectual property and copyright law. Sounds boring, but its not. Plus, his show is amazing. If you want to know more, watch the documentary “RIP: A Remix Manifesto.” THE SHINS An indie rock band. Big surprise here? Its an indie-rock festival, after all. At any rate, they have a song called “Caring is Creepy.” Need I say more? DIPLO DJ, music producer and former school teacher? Diplo is most famous for working with critical artists MIA and Major Lazer. Diplo usually plays huge festivals. Its one of those things — it’s like, if you know you know. I’ll say this though: heard of Beyonce’s “Run The World?” Yeah, he did that. THE HOOD INTERNET A Chicago-based production duo. They specialize in hip-hop mash-ups and they DJ their mixes live. Again, too much to blurb. Ask your kids or get on YouTube. NICO VEGA LA-based rock band. If you like The White Stripes, you’ll love this band. The lead singer is sexy in that PJ Harvey way. Her vocals sound somewhat Janis Joplin-esque. Its one of those bands that says something about you when you listen to them. Also, good music for singing in the car or shower. Edwin Banacia is a local bar owner, local bar patron and former music industry executive. And he knows Beyonce ~ so that alone makes him & his music picks worthwhile to us.
▶Liz’s Picks
TROMBONE SHORTY He is amazing ... no need for a 5 o’clock cocktail because his show is like the smooth glass of wine I would love to be drinking. AWOLNATION My absolute favorite song in the entire world right now is “All I Need.” I will be the groupie in the front row gazing into Aaron Bruno’s pale blue eyes when he sings this song. If he sings it early in the set, I will run to see the end of the Givers set and hope they sing my favorite song, “Up Up Up” last. WEEZER Hope they play Island In The Sun; it’s kind of old, but perfect for the beach. I will be the one chanting “Hip Hip.” DLP My favorite band is playing Sunday. These guys rock AND have fabulous day jobs. Every time I see them play I usually lose about two pounds from dancing like a maniac. I might be a little more reserved since they play in broad daylight. Maybe I’ll just stare at the drummer’s calves; he’s got the best calves of any Supervisor of Elections I know. CONSTELLATIONS Awesome party band, love the songs “Perfect World” and “Felicia.” The lead singer looks like Roger Daltrey crossed with Axl Rose, but with a much lower voice. Liz Biggs is the DeLuna Fest Director of Sales. And just like most of you guys—she’s pretty torn up about having to pick between Stars and Cake.
▶Scott’s Picks
CAKE I saw Cake at Slugggo’s back in the ‘90s and it was one of my favorite shows ever. A must-see for me again, obviously. KERMIT RUFFINS One of my personal favorites of all time. Doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen him (and trust me — it’s a lot) Kermit is always on my “don’t miss” list. GIRL TALK Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m a recent convert to the electronic world, in general, and in particular Girl Talk. GROUPLOVE I want to see a band that’s got a number one single on the Alt Nation chart and guess what? Grouplove is that band. JJ GREY & MOFRO This band is a pleasant surprise for me. I think they are going to put on one of the sets people will be talking about all weekend long. Scott Mitchell is the Managing Partner of DeLuna Fest. These picks are what he would check out at the Fest, if he wasn’t busy running the Fest. He was also too busy for a photo. {in}

"THE SAP WAS JUST TOO FAST AND FURIOUS. " - CARL NEWMAN
The New Pornographers: The Interview by Hana Frenette
we had him for maybe two to four shows, but for the most part, from 2000 to 2005, he wasn’t there. And no one really noticed, I think, because no one really knew what he looked like. We were wondering if people were going to be disappointed, and ask, ‘where’s Dan?’ It took about five years, but now people are starting to ask. My niece Kathryn is singphoto courtesy of last.fm/music/ The+New+Pornographers ing and playing with us now, and sometimes Chatting with Carl Newman is quite people will yell at her, ‘I love you Neko!’ pleasant. He’s easy going and quick to ofWhich is funny because you’d think if they fer a story, whether it’s about beekeeping, really loved her they’d know what she maple syrup, Neko Case or the sounds of looked like. Woodstock, NY on a nice day. IN: You guys will be playing at DeLuna Fest on Pensacola Beach. Have you ever been here before? CN: I don’t think we have. We did a festival somewhere near Orlando a year or two ago. Florida is rarely on the tour, unless it’s a special tour. IN: What will the band lineup consist of for DeLuna, with some members having their own touring schedule? CN: Neko will not be with us. I believe she’s recording with TB Burnett. And Dan [Bejar]-we never get Dan! Maybe a rare occurrence. The funny thing about that is, right after we made “Mass Romantic” with Dan on some songs, he calls us all together and says that he’s moving to Spain. So
IN: When did your niece join the band? CN: We brought her in to sing and play keyboard on a record. When that record had been done, we got offered a show in Brooklyn and we immediately told them that Neko couldn’t come. They asked if we could still do it anyway. Kathryn started doing all the Neko parts and we weren’t really sure about how it was all going to go. We played the Brooklyn Prospect Park show and it went well. I also met my wife at that show, so it was kind of a big turning point in my life. IN: Have you been working on anything for your A.C. Newman side project lately? CN: I am simultaneously working on a solo album and a New Pornographers album and I’m going to see which one comes out first.
IN: I heard you moved to Woodstock. Do you feel like people will expect your music to sound differently, more folky, more Woodstocky? CN: I think my next album will sound more Woodstocky. I’ve had songs build up over the years, and the band just doesn’t make them sound right. If I was really influenced by my surroundings, everything would just sound like The Incredible String Band. They were arguably one of the first freak-folk bands, with a renaissance style. On a sunny day in Woodstock it really is the perfect music to listen to. IN: Do you live on a farm or just out in the country? CN: It’s not a farm, but we do have about four and a half acres of land. We have a lot of trees, and you can’t really see any neighbors. Except maybe the people across the street. There’s always stuff to do. We’ve been beekeeping, and last winter we made maple syrup. I had to dump out 40 gallons of sap, just because I didn’t have time to stand over a fire and boil it all down. The sap was just too fast and furious. It was nice though to be able to use syrup at your own discretion, and pour a whole cup over your pancakes and not feel bad that you’d paid forty dollars for it. I just kept thinking, how do people make any money off this? It must have to charge about a hundred dollars a gallon. And that’s actually about what it costs. It’s so time consuming and I soon realized there is no money to be made in it.

I just got their newest record and I’m really hoping they’ll play some stuff off that. IN: Any plans for after the festival? CN: We might try to check some of the festival out. think. Has the recording process pretty much stayed the same or would you say it’s evolved toward something else? CN: It’s still very similar. We’ve never really had much of a process — everyone contributes. So much of the time it’s just John and I in the studio fooling around, trying to figure out what works. It’s not like it’s all seven of us in the studio though, just constantly bouncing ideas off of each other.
