MORE THAN A GAME On Saturday, I sat in the Blue Wahoos Stadium press box with Commissioner Lumon May watching the 2015 Soul Bowl as youth teams from Magee and Legion fields battled for the city football title. On the field was a swarm of little boys, mostly a throng of helmets and shoulder pads engulfing bodies that were little more than skinny legs and arms running and tackling. The stands were crowded, parents and grandparents watching their babies play. At the beginning of each game, the teams marching onto the field rivaled any NFL or college introduction. Colored smoke filled the air. Cheerleaders and parents created an aisle for their players. Fireworks boomed as the boys ran into the stadium. Sitting with Lumon in the stands, I thought about his father, Rev. Theophalis May, the man for whom the community center at Legion Field is named. How proud he would be to see what his son, family and friends have created. Four years ago, Lumon, co-founder and director of the Southern Youth Sports Association, met with Blue Wahoos owner Quint Studer to work out how to play the Soul Bowl at the newly-opened Bayfront Stadium. Studer wanted the stadium to be seen as a place open to all citizens and sports. It was an expensive proposition, but sponsors came forward to make it happen.

I also thought of another person dear to Lumon while I watched the games—his grandmother, Ruby Lee Jackson, who passed away four years ago. She was born on the fourth of July in Evergreen, Ala. Before she passed, Ruby Lee Jackson saw her children, more than a dozen grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren prosper. For decades, she worked for the City of Pensacola as a custodian, first at the Fricker Center and later at the Vickery Center. For wages barely above the minimum, Ms. Jackson shepherded generations of inner-city kids. She had keys to the gym and kept an eye on the kids who flocked to play, not being afraid to swing a broom if someone sassed her. Lumon has often shared how his grandmother inspired him to become involved in coaching youth athletics. Though he doesn’t mention it, I know he does the Soul Bowl at Blue Wahoos Stadium to honor his father and grandmother. The touchdowns, trophies and a year’s worth of bragging rights are nice, but the Soul Bowl is so much more. The games are about community and family, those in the stands and those watching from heaven. {in}rick@inweekly.net

WOMEN BUILDERS BREAK GROUND

After months of hard work, the 118 women who have been working to raise the funds to build a home as part of Pensacola Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build 2015 have finally started construction. Builders raised a total of $71,369 to go toward building costs of the home, located at 2914 N. Roosevelt Street. “Our teams did such a great job of partnering with members of the local business community to fund the home,” said Nancy Wolfe, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity Director of Development and Communication. Women Build teams broke ground October 3, taking turns building for the rest of the week. Last Wednesday, the Creative Learning Academy and Global Village teams were on site working on the frame of the home. When completed, the home will be sold with a zero-interest mortgage to mother of two, Donna Snowden. Snowden said that she is excited to have a place for her and her children to call home, because she understands the importance of stability in a household. “It's very important for them to have stability,” she said. “When I was younger, we moved a lot. I remember going to several schools and meeting a lot of people. It's very important, because my two daughters won't have to move from place to place.” JOLLY PROMOTES WEBSTER Last week, U.S. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced that he would not seek to be the next Speaker of the House. The position became open after Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) announced in late September that he was stepping down and resigning from Congress, effective Oct. 31. Florida Congressman David Jolly had gone to the Republican Caucus meeting on Oct. 8 prepared to nominate Rep. Dan Webster for the post, so he wasn’t surprised by McCarthy’s announcement.

Inweekly reached Jolly the afternoon McCarthy withdrew from the race. “I had come to conclusion in the last week that there was no way Kevin could get to 218 votes on the House floor, which would be required for him to become the next speaker,” he said on “Pensacola Speaks” on News Talk 1370 WCOA. “What Kevin did today was an honorable thing. He realized that he is not the leader that could unite the party and lead the Congress, so he removed himself from consideration.” Jolly believes Webster, a fellow Floridian from Winter Garden, has the experience and temperament to be House Speaker. “He was the Speaker of the House for the State of Florida as a Republican during a Democratic governorship,” Jolly said. “He understands that we have to work together in divided government to advance our own principles, and, in our case, our conservative principles.” He said that current times call for a different role for the Speaker of the House. He said that Boehner and other House leaders have shied away from certain issues, because they considered them “too politically toxic.” “Now is the time where we don't need a Speaker of the House with a high profile that becomes the face of the Republican Party across the country,” he said. “We need a speaker who can demonstrate success in governing. Let's get boarder security and immigration done. Let's get our budget done before we face a shutdown. Let's get a transportation package done, and let's debate the President's foreign policy.” Jolly, who is also running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Marco Rubio, said that he and Webster share a similar leadership philosophy. “Dan and I share a very simple premise,” he said. “We would rather wrestle with hard issues, resolve them, and lose an election because we fought for issues we believed in, than

come up here and do nothing only for the sake of our own re-election.” Jolly added, “Dan Webster could lead this Congress. We will have a new face of the party in our presidential nominee next year. We don't need a Speaker of the House to serve that role. We need a Speaker who can govern.”

FOOD TRUCK REVIVAL The food trucks are almost here; almost, but not quite. After two years of debate and a meaningless pilot program, the city of Pensacola finally appears to be paving the way for food trucks. City council members managed to grant initial approval of a proposed food truck ordinance on Oct. 8, with their final decision on the new ordinance to come in November. Council’s first-reading approval of the ordinance comes as public demand for action on the issue has built. “We need to get something on the books,” Mayor Ashton Hayward urged council members. “I think a few of you feel that way.” The conversation about food trucks has gone on so long primarily because of disagreements between food truck operators and downtown restaurant owners. Established restaurants, credited with contributing to downtown’s revitalization in recent years, fear that food trucks will negatively impact their businesses. A handful of members of the downtown dining community expressed their concerns to the council once again. “We feel that the entrepreneurial spirit is a wonderful thing, but, as the first gentleman said, it’s not free,” said Jack Williams, whose family owns Seville Quarter. “We just hope that you will consider those of us who invest in brick and mortar.” Pepper Dowdy, co-founder of the Pensacola Food Truck Coalition, told council

his group supported an ordinance governing food trucks “as long as it’s fair.” “This should be a compromise between all of us,” Dowdy said. The nut of the food truck debate centers on downtown, specifically along South Palafox Street. The ordinance that will be voted on second reading doesn’t allow food trucks on South Palafox between Garden Street and Plaza De Luna. But it is void of a so-called buffer zone preferred by the restaurant owners that would prohibit operating a food truck within a prescribed distance from an established brick-and-mortar business. Referencing the absence of the buffer zone, Councilman Brian Spencer described the new ordinance as “gutted.” He implored council to consider the interest of downtown business owners — “We don’t want to kill the golden goose” — who he said could not be in attendance to fully state their own case. “They’re not out there, they’re not able to be here,” he said. “They’re working.” Councilman Larry Johnson argued the food trucks didn’t pose a real threat the restaurants. He relayed a conversation with Chips Kirchenfeld, co-owner of Dharma Blue. “He said, ‘Larry, I’ve never seen a food truck put a restaurant out of business,’” Johnson said. “I think we should give this a chance.” Council ended up making a few tweaks to the food truck ordinance, which was a combination of ones proposed by Johnson and Councilman Charles Bare, prior to approving its first public reading. However, further changes may be made at the Nov. 12 council meeting. Spencer, Councilman P.C. Wu and President Andy Terhaar said they would need to see additional tweaks—primarily, the addition of the buffer zone—in order to support the ordinance. “Come next month,” Terhaar said, “I just hope to see a few minor tweaks.”{in}

BROTHER’S BBQ

3309 Gulf Beach Hwy. brothersbbqpensacola.com How long have you been in business? 2 years What inspired you to get started? We were inspired to open a restaurant after a strong response to our food at local events and festivals. They drive from all over the southeast to enjoy our home-cooked BBQ. Even world-famous Chef Curtis Stone has dropped in. How many employees do you have? 10 How do you define being the “best”? For us, we get here early every day to put as much love into our recipes as we possibly can, because you can taste the difference. What do you think sets you and your business apart? From the kitchen to the front-end staff, we strive every time you join us to make BBQ and customer service experiences you will always remember and want to tell your friends about. Who or what inspires you to be your best? Our families, staff and clients; without them, we wouldn't be here. Thank you to all. Answers by: Owners Adam Rosenfield and Guy Gautney

CARMEN’S LUNCH BAR

407 S. Palafox, Ste. B, carmenslunchbar.com How long have you been in business? Three years. What inspired you to get started? I've always had dreams of owning my own restaurant. When Quint and Rishy Studer announced their plans for the Pensacola Business Challenge, I embraced the opportunity! The space is very small, so the design was inspired by small bars and restaurants in Europe and New Orleans. How many employees do you have? 12 How do you define being the “best”? I think that being the "best" means that you have made an impression on your customer

for doing something differently and, most importantly, consistently. There is a huge difference between good and great. We believe in being great, so we work hard for it every day. What do you think sets you and your business apart? At Carmen's we are known for our unique menu, warm service and intimate setting. I think it is the flavorful food and colorful presentation of our dishes that make our food stand out. Carmen's has also become a meeting spot where there is a sense of community and camaraderie. Who or what inspires you to be your best? My appetite and my desire to make people happy continually inspire me to do my best. I love great food! It drives me every day. My mother was the best caterer; the power her delicious cuisine had to make people happy made me want to follow her lead. Answers by: MariCarmen Josephs, Chef/ Owner

We bake all our cheesecakes in house, we use the freshest and finest ingredients — always fresh, never frozen. Whole cheesecakes are made to order. Who or what inspires you to be your best? END OF THE LINE CAFE

610 E. Wright St., eotlcafe.com How long have you been in business? 13 years What inspired you to get started? A longtime love of cooking. me to go out on my own, and it was time for Pensacola. How many employees do you have? Six lovely in-house ladies who work both full and part time, two contract employees who help with writing and graphic design, two contract jewelers and a fabulous connection with a local jeweler who does the mainstay of our trade work. It takes a village. How do you define being the “best”? Balance, for me and my employees. I need time, and they need time. They also need to be active players in the business. Their opinions count, their ideas count. We work together as a team, and I think it makes our work place the best it can be. What do you think sets you and your business apart? We strive to bring new and different ideas to our community, to see art and design in new ways, and it is thrilling to us when a new friend "gets it.” It’s fun! We have few rules (but lots of structure) and love to change it up. Who or what inspires you to be your best? First it was my Aunt Susan traveling to Africa, India and China in search of special art pieces. Then it was the amazing group of female artists and designers who now show in our gallery. Now it is my daughter; may she blaze her own path. Answers by: Susan Campbell Hatler, Owner

875 Royce St., coawfla.org How long have you been practicing? I have been "practicing" for 41 years; hopefully I will get it correct and no longer have to practice. What inspired you to get started? Following a stint in the Air Force—with my first assignment being at Hurlburt Field—I decided to come back to this area and pursue a career in the helping profession, so I secured a MS Degree in Counseling and applied for work at the Council on Aging. How many employees do you have? 60 How do you define being the “best”? Well, first of all, I would neither consider myself the best, nor the worst. Somehow saying or thinking you are the best just seems a tad offensive. Let's just say being the best to me is doing what I can with the talents given to me. What do you think sets you and your business apart? Obviously that is the employees of the Council on Aging. Employees make or break a business, organization and its leadership. How they do their jobs, their attitude, their professionalism, everything—it really is all about the employees. Who or what inspires you to be your best? Frankly, I never want to "let down" the people who "make" the Council on Aging; my employees, the people we serve, our volunteers, and our donors. So it really is for all of them that I do what I can with the talents I have been given. Answers by: John B. Clark, President/CEO, Council on Aging of West Florida

Coast Tours began to help revitalize downtown Pensacola by offering historical cultural activities in a fun and exciting new way. I was frustrated seeing St. Augustine or Savannah or Charleston as historical cities, but Pensacola was being marketed as a beach town. We are both. How many employees do you have? One full time; one part time and five tour guides. How do you define being the “best”? Our guests define what is the "best." We just try to have as much fun as possible with every guest and make sure they are having as much fun while with us. And learn something, too. What do you think sets you and your business apart? We have a unique and fun way to experience downtown Pensacola. Segways and bikes always make learning more fun. And for those who like to drink while learning, we have combined a traditional pub crawl with a historical walk and created our Historical Walking Pub Tours. Who or what inspires you to be your best? My wife and daughter, the city and community. I was born and raised in Pensacola and have always hated hearing people say that Pensacola has potential to be a great city. Enough with the potential; just be a great city, already. Answers by: Nic Schuck, Owner

The combination of these two things, along with genuinely caring for others, is what has helped us to be successful. What do you think sets you and your business apart? We try to put ourselves in the shoes of the constituents we are trying to help. We've all been trapped in governmental red tape, so that empathy for the constituent can make a real difference. Earning that trust every day and trying to do the best that I can for them is my inspiration. Answers by: Clay Ingram, State Representative, District 1

Pensacola State College started as Pensacola Junior College (PJC) in 1948. What inspired you to get started? How many employees do you have? The Continuing Education office staffs four to five people year-round for offering a variety of non-academic Recreation and Leisure courses throughout the year, as well as Kids' College in the summer. Approximately 35-40 additional teachers and support staff are hired for the 10 weeks of the Kids' College program. How do you define being the “best”? Participation from the community for 25 years. A C E L E B R AT I O N O F D I F F E R E N C E M A K E R S I N P E N S ACO L A Pensacola has been blessed with families who have helped to mold our community, generation after generation. This series of stories celebrates the 1st generation to come to Pensacola and the legacy of contributions they started. Here’s a look back at the 1st generation of difference makers.

THE

Joe & Anna Patti FAMILY

The Joe Patti Seafood Company has long been a Pensacola icon. Its founder was born in Sicily at the turn of the 20th Century. By age twelve, he was at sea, and the circumstances of World War I brought him to Pensacola. Already a trained commercial fisherman, Patti soon had his own boat. Giuseppe “Joe” Patti

A Swelling Business and Family In 1928, Joe married Anna Patane from another Sicilian family. The couple sold fresh fish out of their home and began a family that would grow to six children—Frank, Joe, Sammy, Gerard, Maria and Josie. They built a new home, later incorporating with it a seafood market, which Anna managed. Joe Patti’s Seafood was relocated to the bay front and enlarged many times as its offerings were broadened.

The Joe Patti sign is a beloved Pensacola landmark

Helping the War Effort During World War II, when planning began for the allied invasion of Sicily, Joe assisted intelligence units with mapping, and the Pattis became seafood suppliers to the Naval Air Station and many other military units.

From Shrimping to Shipbuilding Captain Joe began building shrimp boats for the family business, and then fishing and work boats for others. Frank Patti established the Patti Shipyard on Bayou Chico in 1977 and expanded production to include tugboats, ferries and giant riverboat casinos that received national acclaim.

Built at the Patti Shipyard in 1993, the Casino Queen was the largest passenger vessel on U.S. inland waterways.

Joe Patti died in 1992, and Anna followed in 1994. By that time, the seafood market was nationally known, and all the family holdings were in good hands. The Patti Family is forever entwined with Pensacola. Joe and Anna helped chart the course of our history, sailed into our hearts (through our stomachs), and cast a wide net over the culture of our community.

From “Panhandle to Pan” with Chef Irv Miller by Jennifer Leigh

For three decades, Chef Irv Miller has been making the Florida Panhandle a more delicious place to dine. You’ve seen him on TV, read his food columns and, of course, enjoyed his dishes at Jackson’s Steakhouse where he is the founding executive chef. You also voted for him multiple times, including this year, in Best of the Coast. Miller just won one of this year’s top honors— Best Chef.

With his new cookbook, “Panhandle to Pan: Recipes and Stories of Florida’s New Redneck Riviera,” you can take a culinary tour of the region guided by Miller with personalized notes, stories and a timeline about the development of the cuisine in the area. As with all cookbooks, there are recipes. “Panhandle to Pan” has around 150 for every occasion, including Miller’s Coastal Crab Cakes. “They run the gamut from appetizers, salads, soups, steaks, wild game, fish…the whole board,” he said. “I don’t really think of (the recipes) as my secrets. It’s a pleasure to pass them on.” Although Miller has contributed to several cookbooks, “Panhandle to Pan” is his first culinary tome, but he shares the glory with the regional farmers and artisans who make a living producing fine quality food. “It’s not just a cookbook,” he said. “It localizes the culture and captures the folks that are a part of it. It truly is a remarkable history.” While Miller pokes fun at the region’s infamous nickname in his book, he says trends like the farm-to-table movement aren’t new in the area. “It’s been going on for decades,” he said. “Now that term is more-or-less

By Jennifer Leigh WSRE has celebrated local culinary arts for more than 25 years—long before the foodie craze took hold—with the annual Wine & Food Classic. This year’s theme: Savor and Surf Southern. “When WSRE started the Wine & Food Classic, there weren’t a lot of other culinary events like there are today,” said Mary Riker, spokesperson for WSRE. “And long before there were cable shows dedicated to the kitchen, viewers relied on PBS to deliver cooking shows by chefs like Julia Child, Jacques Pepin and Pensacola’s own Earl Peyroux.” Today, PBS has even more cooking talents by way of Martha Stewart, John Besh and popular shows such as “The Great British Baking Show,” “I’ll Have What Phil’s Having,” and “A Chef’s Life.” It’s only natural that WSRE would host a fundraiser with food and wine, Riker noted. What’s new this year is the renaming of the people’s choice award to the Earl Peyroux Culinary Legacy Award to honor the late chef and host of “Gourmet Cooking.” Originally from New Orleans, Peyroux lived in Pensacola before his death in 2003 and was a culinary instructor at Pensacola Junior Col-

lege when he was invited to host “Gourmet Cooking” for WSRE. What remains is the walkabout tasting, which spotlights local chefs. As an added bonus to the event, Chef John Besh will meet fans and sign his first cookbook “Besh Big Easy” a week after the Wine & Food Classic. The New Orleans chef was in town last month for Taste of the Beach where he was the celebrity guest. “I want to make cooking accessible… introduce new flavors and show how easy it is to cook,” Besh said about his book in an interview last month. The Wine & Food Classic isn’t just celebrating great food, but is a great resource for education, which WSRE and other PBS affiliates provide. “If you think about it, three generations have been growing up with public television’s educational programs like ‘Sesame Street,’” Riker said. “We had ‘Mister Rogers,’ today’s children have the spin-off ‘Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.’ These shows make learning fun and teach not only math and our ABCs, but also life skills and values that help children succeed in school and in life.” So when you indulge on fine wines and

delicious dishes, don’t feel guilty. It’s for a good cause. “The Wine and Food Classic supports many of WSRE’s educational outreach efforts like the Imagination Station and all of our public television programs,” said Sandy Cesaretti Ray, general manager for WSRE. “This year’s event promises to be one of the best. Join us as we sip, savor and raise money for WSRE.” {in}

Silent Score

Back in the silent era, films were accompanied by a live orchestra. It was like a twofor-one show—live music and visual effects. As a throwback, and at the request of fans, Austin-based band Invincible Czars will be performing their original score alongside the 1922 German silent film “Nosferatu” at Treehouse Cinema for a one-night-only show. Invincible Czars has scored six other silent films and has garnered attention around the country for their arrangements. For their score to “Nosferatu” the fourpiece band incorporates violin, glockenspiel, organ, flute, bass clarinet, vocals, music box, loops, electric guitar, bass, singing bowl, tambourine and other hand-percussion instruments that will not just add sound to a silent movie, but creates another visual aspect to the experience. Just in time for Halloween, “Nosferatu,” which is heralded as the first vampire movie, tells the story of Hutter and Ellen, a couple traveling from the village of Wisborg to Transylvania to sell a piece of property to a Count Orlok. Hutter stays in Orlok’s castle, only to learn that he is a vampire. According to a press release from

Invincible Czars, the movie is regarded as one of the most important horror films. It was almost erased from history books when the estate of Bram Stocker sued the filmmakers for copyright infringement. Most of the prints of the movie were destroyed. The band takes cues from film and classical composers, such as Bernard Hermann, Danny Elfman and Ennio Morricone as well as modern rock bands, such as Mr. Bungle, Ween, Sonic Youth and the Dead Kennedys. For their “Nosferatu” show, the band also incorporated classical music from Bela Bartok’s “Romanian Folk Dances.” The Invincible Czars’ score of “Nosferatu” is a unique and high-brow excuse to celebrate Halloween, no matter how old you are. {in}

Miss Massive Snowflake Takes Piece of Pensacola Before stopping in Pensacola to play Sluggo’s next Thursday, de Leon answered a few questions from IN about his intense touring schedule and why he chose a photo of Pensacola Beach as the cover for his next album. INWEEKLY: What are the origins of Miss Massive Snowflake? DE LEON: The band started as a recording project in 2005. The initial group was called Massive Snowflake and included my mother-in-law and daughter, with our first release Shane de Leon of Miss Massive Snowflake / Courtesy Photo being a Christmas Ever play music with Mom and Dad EP that was given during the holidays? What about some to friends and family. The family band lasted Christmas tunes with the kids? For Portthree EPs and the album “Queen's Headland-based musician Shane de Leon, what ache.” The name was brainstormed during started as a Christmas project with his the Christmas EP sessions and was heavily family unfolded into a full-time gig fronting influenced by my daughter. The Miss was his band Miss Massive Snowflake. added for some vague reason in 2006. De Leon said that the band started as a family recording project in 2006, and the INWEEKLY: How long have you been initial group included de Leon's mother-inplaying and who are your band members? law and daughter. Bassist Jeanne Kennedy DE LEON: I began touring under the name Crosby joined in 2007 and shortly after, Miss Massive Snowflake in 2006. The first Andy Brown on drums. The eclectic sound tour was in Europe with my daughter and of Miss Massive Snowflake combines jazz, wife. Mostly it was me with an acoustic guifunk and psychedelic elements, with de tar, prerecorded backing tracks, along with Leon’s guitar playing and prominent vocals visuals that were semi-interactive. My famgiving him a voice as a storyteller. ily was tired of being in a band, I was tired of

malfunctioning electrical equipment, so in 2007 I began assembling a more traditional rock band. Jeanne Kennedy Crosby has been playing bass with MMS since then, and Andy Brown has been producing the albums and playing drums since 2008. We went through a few members and at one time were up to five people but have settled on the three-piece band. INWEEKLY: How did MMS evolve from a family band to a solo endeavor? DE LEON: I split with my wife in 2012 and began touring relentlessly. My last album “So Sweet” was written during and after my divorce. It is my break up album. I play around 200 to 250 shows a year since then in Europe and the US. I tour mostly solo with an electric guitar now and with the full band joining me only on the West Coast and in Europe. They have spouses and day jobs. I just keep lapping the US and Europe solo and have enjoyed seeing the world and playing music most days live. I would love to have the three-piece band with me every night, but that is not sustainable with the amount of money that I bring in. It is enough for a solo artist.

I have dreams of incorporating my love of hip hop, funk and electronic music into my stuff like Gang Starr, Kendrick Lamar, Squarepusher, Mouse on Mars, Jimi Hendrix, Funkadelic, etc. You can hear the electro influence in the earlier releases. INWEEKLY: What other mediums do you use to create? DE LEON: I have done all the album artwork. I love drawing. I chose a photo I took of my girlfriend on Pensacola Beach to be the cover of the next album (“The Final Photograph,” out in April 2016), because there are some great beach references on the album. All the album art has been drawings so far, and this is the first one with a photo. There is a song in Italian on the new album called “L'ultima Fotografia,” and the photo just fits thematically on a few levels.

“I search for real stories and moments that can transcend the mundane and make them magical.” Shane de Leon

INWEEKLY: What do you enjoy about playing in Pensacola? DE LEON: Sluggo's has a great supportive independent scene, and I just love the people who work there and show up. I am a huge supporter of DIY and independent culture, and they seem to be doing it right. The Grunge was my first stop in Pensacola, and they are great folks there, too. {in}

INWEEKLY: What influences you and your sound? DE LEON: I am a voracious music devourer and listen to many forms of music. I consider Miss Massive Snowflake to be storytelling and rock WHAT: Miss Massive Snowflake with Commumusic. In my vein, I would say I am nity Center, Nelson Gatlin and Greg Bond influenced by The Mountain Goats, WHEN: 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 Smog, Flaming Lips, Bowie and Tom WHERE: Sluggo’s, 101 S. Jefferson Waits. I search for real stories and COST: $5—$10 moments that can transcend the DETAILS: sluggosflorida.com mundane and make them magical.

news of the weird BRIGHT IDEAS Unapparent Problem, Solved: Vladimir Laurent (an insurance executive in Coral Springs, Florida) received his U.S. patent on Sept. 29 and can proceed mass-producing "The Shield"—his brainstorm to keep men's genitalia from dragging on the inside of toilet bowls while they're seated. Laurent told the South Florida Business Journal that his device was something he "needed, personally" (though he's aware that not all males experience the sensation). The Shield is basically a cup attached to the bowl by suction that allows movement via a ball-and-socket joint. LATEST HUMAN RIGHTS Kentucky's government ethics law bars gifts from lobbyists to legislators, but state Sen. John Schickel filed a federal lawsuit in September claiming that he has a constitutional (First Amendment) right to receive them. (The laws were passed after the FBI found several Kentucky politicians selling their votes.) And in May, officials of the American Gaming (gambling) Association and the Association of Club Executives complained to the Pentagon that a threatened prohibition of the use of government credit cards at casinos and strip clubs violated card users' constitutional rights, in that protected activities (such as business strategy meetings) take place at those venues. NEW! AMAZING! AWESOME! Low-benefit (but Internet-connected!) devices now on sale (from February MacLife magazine): HAPIfork (Bluetooth-connected, alerts you if you're eating too fast); iKettle (heat water at different temperatures for different drinks, controlled by phone); an LG washing machine that lets you start washing while away (provided, of course, that you've already loaded the washer); Kolibree "smart toothbrush" (tracks and graphs "brushing habits"). Also highlighted was the Satis "smart toilet," which remotely flushes, raises and lowers the seat, and engages the bidet—features MacLife touts mainly as good for "terrorizing guests."

THE JOB OF THE RESEARCHER Scientists have somehow determined that rats dream about where they want to go in the future. Dr. Hugo Spiers of University College London (and colleagues) inferred as much in a recent eLife article based on how neurons in the rodent brain's hippocampus fire up in certain patterns. They discovered similar patterns when a rat is asleep just before conquering a food "maze" as when he awakens and actually gets to the food (as if it plotted by dream). (Buried Lede: Rats have dreams.) LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES The Power of Prayer: (1) Two men with handguns walked through an open door of a Philadelphia home in July and demanded drugs and cash from the three women inside, threatening pistol-whippings. According to a Philly.com report, a 55-year-old woman in the home immediately burst into loud prayer, causing the gunmen to flee empty-handed. (2) Police in Bellevue, Ohio, initially believed that texting behind the wheel was what caused Marilyn Perry, 62, to crash and badly injure another driver. However, in July, she and her lawyer convinced a judge that she was "looking down" as she drove only because she was praying over "personal problems." LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Paul Neaverson, 61, was convicted in September in England's Maidstone Crown Court for a robbery his own lawyer called "ridiculous." He had gone to a NatWest bank in Rainham, pointed a knife at a cashier, and demanded that money be placed "on the table" or "into his account" at NatWest, according to the police report. Earlier, he had walked out of an HSBC bank when the teller balked at his robbery demand. He was sentenced to two years in prison.{in}
