DAVID STAFFORD The Escambia County supervisor of elections will return to office for a third term. Stafford, the outgoing president of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections, has earned the respect and trust of the voters. Supervisor of Elections David Stafford, a Republican, is the only Escambia County constitutional officer to not garner opposition. A fine testimony for a solid public official.
PENSACOLA BLUE WAHOOS Seven
Wahoo players have been named to the Southern League’s South Division All-Star squad. Starting pitcher Daniel Corcino and closer Donnie Joseph, in addition to infielders Joel Guzman and Henry Rodriguez as well as outfielder Ryan LaMarre, were initially picked for the team. The league later added shortstop Didi Gregorius and pitcher J.C. Sulbaran to the squad. The contest will be held on June 19 at Smokies Park in Kodak, Tenn.

PENSACOLA MUSEUM OF ART
Five members of the museum’s executive committee resigned recently after board of trustees voted 9-8 against firing Executive Director Sonya Davis, who has led the museum for three years. The executive committee members, Joe Zarzaur, David Bear, Wright Moulton, Andrew Rothfeder and Teresa Dos Santos, agreed among themselves to not make statements to the press, but Davis has announced that they will have an independent audit of the PMA finances to clear any doubts about its operations.
BIG UNIONS The recall election of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was an important test of the political powers of the national labor unions. The unions did almost as badly as Escambia County School District did on the FCAT tests. Walker posted a seven-point victory—garnering 53 percent of the vote, which is nearly the same margin by which he won the governorship in 2010. Though unions spent millions to defeat him, exit polling showed 38 percent of union voters chose Walker. SHERRI MYERS Last month, the Pensacola city councilwoman threatened to sue the mayor if he didn’t retract his memo regarding council communications with city employees. The memo hasn’t been retracted. The ball is definitely in Myers’ court.

ARRESTED?
You lose a part of yourself when your father dies. My dad was my safety net. His love and support gave me the confidence to try, but he is a tough act to follow. Richard McLean Outzen, Sr. stood five feet, nine and half inches tall—and, yes, the half an inch was very important to him. Dad cared, loved and led with a passion that few could match. He was a natural leader that believed no problem was unsolvable. A master storyteller, Dad made people laugh, think and care. He commanded people’s attention when he walked into a room by the sheer force of his personality. He loved people and people loved him. He asked questions and listened to their answers. He made them feel good about themselves. Dad knew no “little” people. Coming from humble beginnings himself, he didn’t look down on anyone. Race, religion and nationality weren’t barriers to his friendship. The only exceptions were the pretentious and those that mistreated others. With them, he was merciless and didn’t hesitate to take them out. Once he attended a board meeting during which the chairman started to ramble. Dad pulled out his checkbook and started adding up the figures. The chairman got upset and thought he would embarrass him.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s stop the discussion until Richard finishes balancing his checkbook,” announced the chairman. Dad didn’t even look up. “When you start saying something worthwhile, I’ll be finished.” The next meeting dad was elected board chairman. Dad was a clothes horse. No matter what he wore, he made you think it was cool. Plaid sports coats, white buck shoes, pink shirts—all were parts of his daily attire. When Bum Phillips was the coach of the Houston Oilers, he wore cowboy boots, a huge belt bucket and a ten-gallon cowboy hat with his light-blue leisure suit for an entire NFL season. Well, okay, maybe not every outfit was cool, even Mom thought he lost his mind that year. There are pieces of dad that I carry in me. My 22 years with him taught me well, but it took years to recover from his death. It’s such an odd, empty feeling to know that you lived more years without your father than with him. There are so many conversations that we never got to have, so many times I needed his arms around me and his words of encouragement. I miss him often and more so on Father’s Day. For those of you whose fathers are still living, please take time to reconnect with them. I wish I could. {in} rick@inweekly.net

CAMPOUT IN THE COURT
Occupy Pensacola representatives—including attorney Alistair McKenzie, center—meet with city staff, Nov. 17, 2011. / photo by Jeremy Morrison
An Occupy Update By Jeremy Morrison The encampment at Pensacola City Hall has lost some of its luster since last fall. Occupy Pensacola’s patchwork of tents and political philosophies have given way to what appears to be an amiable collection of hobos. Although the sparse gathering still sports a large ‘99 Percent’ banner at the corner of Government and Spring streets, the city hall encampment has become ... uninteresting. These days, the more interesting aspects of Pensacola’s Occupy experiment are playing out in the courts. The central legal battle to emerge from the experiment— whether or not the city of Pensacola violated Occupy’s First Amendment rights—could soon wrap up. Both sides have filed motions for summary judgment, which means a decision could be reached this month. “Unless you’re interested in constitutional garbely-goop, you should just read the Statement of Facts,” said city attorney Jim Messer. Currently, the city is listed as the defendant in a case before the U.S. District Court Northern District of Florida. Occupy Pensacola, in addition to several individual members of the local Occupy, contend that the city did not have the authority to evict the encampment that sprung up along side likeminded gatherings across the country. “They’ve got a bunch of constitutional issues that, quite frankly, I can’t explain to you—I’d have to go back and look at my motion,” Messer said. “The basic grounds are ‘it’s just not fair’ and it impedes their rights.” Attorney Alistair McKenzie—who has represented the local Occupy movement since its inception—is arguing that the city “engaged in outright discrimination of Plaintiff’s First Amendment rights,” according to a motion he filed in early June.
Occupy’s basic position was recently laid out before the Pensacola City Council by Dr. Melody Castro, who was arrested as she traversed the city hall lawn last year. “I have two words: selective enforcement,” Castro said, explaining that she felt city administration had overstepped legal boundaries. “This mayor does things above and beyond his own reaching.” Specifically, Occupy is arguing that city officials misused ordinances in an effort to specifically target a group protesting political and social inequalities. While Messer describes the current status as “not much going on,” McKenzie sounds confident about his chances. “It’s unbelievable,” the attorney said, ticking off the evidence he’s gathered. “I hope that we get an argument in front of the judge.” Faced with a lawn full of tents in the fall of 2011, city officials invoked a number of ordinances in an effort to curtail the encampment. Eventually, Occupy was evicted from the city hall lawn, with the camp’s remnants sanctioned to a sliver of sidewalk on the corner. McKenzie holds up statements and correspondences between city officials as evidence that the city overstepped in their dealings with Occupy Pensacola. In an October 27, 2011 email, Messer apparently informed Pensacola City Councilwoman Maren DeWeese that the city had no

way of curbing the growing encampment: “The short answer is very little if anything that Occupy Pensacola does at this point is prohibited by City Ordinance ... There are no land use ordinances that apply. There are no ordinances governing tents, regulating the public usage of City property or permits for this type of demonstration.” McKenzie also cites a Nov. 17 email from City Administrator Bill Reynolds to a concerned citizen: “The real problem is that the City Code does not currently have the necessary language to address what is occurring. That will be rectified in the near future however.” The attorney points to another email from Reynolds—this time addressing city council members—that he said indicates the city attempted to “pass a camping ordinance” specifically to deal with Occupy: “if it had been in place the last few months, we would have been able to deal with our recent issues in a succinct manner.” “Thus, based on the blatant discrimination and admission by the Defendant,” McKenzie wrote in his recent motion, “use of these laws was patently malicious, done in bad faith, and done in violation of Plaintiff’s First Amendment rights.” The attorney describes the city’s strategy in dealing with the local Occupy movement as “post-hoc rationalization.” “Which means they’re basically making up a bunch of bullshit reasons after the fact,” McKenzie said. Messer maintains that the city used ordinances properly and consistently. In his motion, he challenges Occupy’s assertion that the ordinances in question are unconstitutional. “Neither the law nor the facts support the proposition that either ordinance is unconstitutionally vague, unconstitutional as applied or unconstitutional on their face,” the motion states. McKenzie referred to Messer’s recent filing as “a garbage motion.” “His positions I can’t understand,” McKenzie said, adding that it appears Messer “doesn’t make any effort” in defending the city. “I know he’s a smart guy— I’ve heard that from a lot of people—I just don’t understand what’s going on.” The young Occupy attorney said he’s hopeful that his clients will soon prevail in their legal battles with the city of Pensacola. “That could just be naivety or stupid ambition that leads me to believe that,” McKenzie said. Messer, meanwhile, appears to be casually wading through the legal proceedings. These most recent filings, he explained, are most likely just another step in the legal process as opposed to the end game. “I would assume that whatever side gets the sticky end of the lollipop will probably appeal,” the city attorney said. {in} 5
THE 40-DAY FISH
Florida’s 2012 Red Snapper season runs from June 1 to July 11. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shortened the season—again—during its May 2 meeting in Crystal River, Fla. “You know, this has been an ongoing debate for the last umpteen years,” Baker said. Contending that Red Snapper populations have
“People say, ‘oh yeah, there are tons of Red Snapper out there,’” she said. “And there are, but there are tons of juvenile Red Snapper out there.” Red Snapper can live up to 50 years. More mature snappers tend to reproduce at a much higher rate. “It’s something amazing, it’s one of those slides that people say, ‘whoa,’” Nalley explained as she searched a slide presentation for the exact numbers—“one 24-inch female produces as many eggs as 212 17-inch females.” With its continued management of the snapper stock, the state agency is attempting to build up a more mature population. In shortening this year’s season, the FFWCC is also keeping state regulations consistent with new federal rules. States are not required to match federal rules. Critics point out that Texas has not adopted the federal regulations. “But the thing about Texas—you hear this all the time about Texas, ‘they don’t go consistent’—recreational Red Snapper in Texas is not that much,” Nalley said. Florida, however, accounts for about 40 percent of Red Snapper fishing, according to the agency. And while the FFWCC regulations may help increase the number of mature snappers, the number of recreational fishermen in Florida has also increased over the years. This year, those fishermen will be squeezing all their Red Snapper fishing into a 40-day period. That’s making for early summer crowds in the Gulf and a limited window for local charter operations. “I just had a guy call wanting to go out July 15,” Baker said. “The first thing out of my mouth is, ‘you know you can’t keep Red Snapper?’” {in}

A Snapper Saga By Jeremy Morrison
Heading back after a day of Red Snapper fishing, Captain Richard Baker’s phone starts jumping off the hook. Before he makes it to the marina, the charter captain is setting up more trips out into the Gulf. “Ever since my phone got in phone range it’s been ringing,” he said. Baker—operator of Luck E Strike Deep Sea Fishing in Pensacola Beach—has been pretty busy since snapper season began this month. He’s not alone. “June 1st rolls around, Red Snapper opens, you go out there now ... it looks like a parking lot,” the charter captain said. There’s a reason for the crowd. Recreational fishermen only get 40 precious days to bag one of the more popular fish—Red Snapper, or Lutjanus campechanus—in the Gulf of Mexico. “ When July 11 rolls around,” Baker said, “it’s going to be a sad situation.”

been overfished since the early 1980s, the FFWCC has made efforts to rebuild the population through regulation. The state agency determines the length of the season, as well as size and catch limits. The effort is apparently paying off. “We’re seeing more Red Snapper,” said Amanda Nalley, public information specialist with the FFWCC. “We’re also seeing larger fish.” That’s pretty much what Baker has found to be the case, as well. “They’re so thick out you can go to the Bob Sikes Bridge and the Three Mile Bridge and catch Red Snapper,” he laughed. “And this is a saltwater fish we’re talking about.” The apparent abundance of snapper have caused some in the state’s fishing community to question the agency’s continued tightening of regulations. “They keep cutting it back and cutting it back,” Baker said. Nalley’s familiar with the sentiment. She admits it makes sense on the surface.

FEW BLACK PRINCIPAL CANDIDATES
The Escambia County Public School District has a very diverse student enrollment. Minorities comprise over half of the student body. However 78 percent of the principals are white. The future doesn’t look bright for this disparity to improve any time soon. According to the latest list of principals and candidates eligible to become principals—what’s known as the “Principal Pool,” the chances for having more diversity in school administration are slim. The demographics of the “Principal Pool” aren’t much different than the demographics of the current principals. The IN made a public record request for the “Principal Pool.” The list given to the paper was inflated by names of two African-American administrators—Deputy Superintendent Norm Ross and EOCC Coordinator Horace
from the blog
Jones—that aren’t serious candidates for principal. No white assistant superintendents were on the list. The “Principal Pool” had 160 names, after you delete Ross and Jones from it. The list included 50 active principals and 110 candidates. The racial breakdown of the principal candidates was 77 percent white, 20 percent African-American, two percent Asian and one percent other.

Fancy dresses. Cake. Music. Hopefully a champagne toast or two. Two people totally in love. That's what weddings are all about. Well… all that good, fun stuff and the pretty big price tag that comes with it. Sadly, most couples have to sacrifice some of their wedding wishes in the name of budgeting along the way. That's exactly why some of the area’s top wedding vendors have teamed up to offer Pensacola’s June 14, 2012
second annual Blockparty Wedding, which will be held on Gallery Night on Friday, Sept. 14. One lucky couple will receive the grand prize of a free wedding—including just about everything from invitations to flowers to a private reception on The Deck at The Fish House. All of Pensacola is invited to celebrate alongside the couple as they exchange vows
against the backdrop of Garden Street and Palafox. We’ve narrowed the field down to 9 (the tenth and final couple will be revealed at pensacolablockparty.com), but the winning couple still needs to be decided and that's where you come in. Your votes will decide the lucky couple, so read up, pick your favorite pair and go vote. {in} 9

If you don't win the free wedding, when will you tie the knot? Where? Andrew: October 13, 2012 at 5eleven, but we can cancel it. (Laughs)
If your relationship was a board game— which one would be it? Who would win? Lyndsie: Candyland. Duane would win because he likes to take short cuts and cheat!
Have you ever won anything else exciting before? Nicole: We won a pet photography session at Gallery Night from Allison Shamrell. Andrew: To be in the Top 10, I feel like a winner already.
If you had to have a themed wedding, what would you pick? Duane: Superman, Captain America. Lyndsie: His wants the Superman theme song to play when we walk into the reception and then rip open
What's the one thing your wedding absolutely must have? Duane: Macaroni and cheese. Lyndsie: I was going to say you, but now I want mac and cheese more. What will your first dance song be? If you could have any band/musician/dj or pop star in the world (dead or alive) who would be? Lyndsie: Frank Sinatra Why do you deserve a free wedding? Lyndsie: I don’t think I necessarily deserve it. I think he deserves it for what he’s done for this country. He is the most giving, loving person. I wouldn’t be able to do half the things I do without him. Duane: I was actually going to say the same thing. She’s been there for every physical rehabilitation visit. (To Lyndsie) You’ve given me everything I need. If you don't win the free wedding, when will you tie the knot? Lyndsie: October, 27, 2012 on the pier, where we first realized we loved each other. Have you ever won anything else exciting before? Lyndsie: No, but Duane got a scratch-off for $5 once. (Laughs) 11

Summer Blockbusters and Indie Flicks We Hope Come to Pensacola RUBY SPARKS Paul Dano plays a young novelist whose dream girl comes to life after he’s written her. Zoe Kazan acts as a double threat writing the screenplay and playing Ruby Sparks.
7.20 THE DARK KNIGHT RISES If you plan to see one of the most highly anticipated films of the year opening day, get your tickets early. This is Christian Bale’s final round as Batman and he’ll be joined by Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman and new terrorist leader, Bane.
BUZZED ABOUT BLOCKBUSTERS
Check out these summer movies to see if they live up to their hype. 6.15 ROCK OF AGES 1980s music, big hair and Tom Cruise put this movie on the “must-see” list. The story follows a small town girl and a city boy while they pursue their Hollywood dreams. Julianne Hough, Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin add to the star-packed cast.
When you’ve almost passed out from a heat stroke on the beach and you need some solace from the scorching temperature, check in to a nice, cold movie theatre for some rest, relaxation and air conditioning. Here’s a list of summer flicks that you’ll inevitably see because everyone else is doing it, and some that hopefully make their way to local theatres.
LIMITED RELEASE HOPEFULS
Cross your fingers that these indie flicks make their way to a theatre near you. MOONRISE KINGDOM Wes Anderson fans are STILL waiting patiently for this indie megahit to open locally. It's got an all-star ensemble cast—Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman—but it's the young newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward who are really stealing most of the buzz.
THE WOMAN IN THE FIFTH Having already made some buzz since its debut in the Toronto Film Festival in September 2011, “The Woman in the Fifth,” will make its US debut this summer. Ethan Hawke plays a college lecturer who meets a mysterious widow (Kristin Scott Thomas) who may or may not be a murderer. Suspenseful and sexy—the Paris backdrop doesn’t hurt either. SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD Steve Carell plays a man who leaves
6.15 THAT’S MY BOY Take you dad to see this bromance movie for Father’s Day and watch as Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg learn to live as father and son. Vanilla Ice makes an appearance for an added bonus. his wife in search of his high school sweetheart, before the world ends. Carell quit “The Office,” to have more time for his movie roles. Not that “Hope Springs” doesn’t look funny, but if you’re going to choose between the two, choose this movie. TO ROME WITH LOVE Woody Allen (along with a star-filled cast including Penélope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page and Alec Baldwin) and Europe. Enough said. BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD If you feel like taking in a movie mid-week (that is, if it’s released in Pensacola yet) look no further than the Sundance 2012 Grand Jury Prize winner.
6.22 BRAVE If you get stuck babysitting, or you really did love “Up,” then go see “Brave,” where a young, fiery redhead becomes an unlikely hero. 6.22 ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER Adapted from the novel of the same name, America’s sixteenth president discovers that vampires are planning to take over the United States. As POTUS, Lincoln makes it his mission to rid the country of the bloodthirsty enemies.
TAKE THIS WALTZ Only in the movies would a pair like Seth Rogan and Michelle Williams look as happy and cute as they do in the trailer. All is swell until Williams’ character falls for the cute neighbor.
6.29 MAGIC MIKE Maybe you’ve had your fill of shirtless Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum, but you definitely haven’t seen them like this. Channeling his real-life past as a male dancer, Tatum dances through all the male stripper clichés until, of course, he falls for a girl.
TRISHNA Based on Thomas Hardy’s “Tess of the d'Urbervilles,” Freida Pinto plays the daughter of a rickshaw owner who falls for the son of a wealthy property owner. The film was shown in the Tribeca Film Festival in 2011.
7.03 THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN What makes this Spider Man so amazing? Will real-life couple Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield kiss upside down? You’ll have to watch and see.
UNION SQUARE Mira Sorvino and Tammy Blanchard play estranged sisters who are forced to connect again when one of them (Sorvino) shows up unexpectedly and crashes on the couch. And for theatre buffs, Patti Lupone is in it, too.
7.13 RED LIGHTS You have to throw a paranormal movie in the mix. Unlike “Paranormal Activity,” this movie has stars such as Robert De Niro, Sigourney Weaver, Cillian Murphy and Elizabeth Olsen.
7.27 STEP UP REVOLUTION Yes, those movies are still being made. And it’s because you watch them. In a world of “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” it can be hard to avoid the guilty pleasure. 8.3 THE BOURNE LEGACY Bourne fans unite. Jeremy Renner plays the new CIA operative on the run. The tagline says, “There was never just one.” How many are there? 8.17 SPARKLE End your summer movie madness on a high note. The last of the late Whitney Houston was captured in this high-energy story of a sister singing group set in the 1960s. With Whitney, Jordin Sparks and Cee Lo, you know that the soundtrack has to be good.
AND DON’T FORGET…
“The Avengers,” “Men in Black 3,” “Prometheus” and “Snow White and the Huntsman” are in theatres now. You’ve already read the rave reviews, just go and see them already! {in}

An Infinite Interlude IN: Prior to “Take, Care, Take Care, Take Care,” you had not released an album in four years. How is this one different from albums past? JAMES: We don’t think about it in those terms as we are writing. The music has changed in the same ways that we have changed as people. The value of subtlety is a little more overstated with this album, which is weird to say, but we appreciate it. We’re not wearing our emotions quite as much on our sleeves. It’s also maybe a bit more mysterious. IN: Since the release of “Take Care” you guys have been touring pretty non-stop. Are you planning on keeping this momentum going? JAMES: We’ll be keeping it going for a while—for the next few months. At the end of the year we will wind down. A year and a half is a good cycle.
photo by Nick Simonite Austin-based instrumentalists, Explosions in the Sky, are perhaps best known for an expansive sound that slowly builds and ignites into something that most closely mimics, well, an explosion. This electrifying post-rock arrangement of drums and guitars not only demands attention, but also consistently ignites emotion. Over a decade into their musical career and after a multi-year timeout, the group is once again actively adding new pieces to a delicately crafted, infinite interlude. Explosions in the Sky has been touring nearly nonstop since the 2011 release of their most recent album “Take Care, Take Care, Take Care.” With this album comes not only new energy, but for the first time, accompanying visuals. Although widely recognized for writing the soundtrack to
the film “Friday Night Lights,” Explosions held off creating their own audiovisuals— until now. Three videos have been produced and released so far, most recently for track “Postcard from 1952.” While these videos capture the band’s delicate components onscreen, each track remains its own distinct narrative, allowing listeners to retain the freedom to derive their own meaning and imagery. Just before setting out on the latest leg of their current tour, the IN caught up with band member Michael James (guitarist, bassist). While many of the tour stops are renowned venues and sizeable festivals, some intimate shows still sneak their way into the mix. And lucky for us in the Panhandle, one of these just happens to be in neighboring Mobile, Ala.
We want to grow together as a band, but we all have lives outside of that too. I think the first part of that is the answer to this, as well. We are all great friends. We love each other and we like each other and the growth takes care of itself. IN: Your music is often referred to as a narrative. Is there a story you are seeking to tell or is that exclusively up to each listener? JAMES: The answer is both. We have our own story, but without lyrics the song can be and can mean just about anything—if you ask 100 different people you may get 100 different answers. That’s the beauty of instrumental music. IN: Your band virtually got its start thanks to a flyer posted in a record store. Despite how much you’ve grown and how established you’ve become, are you continuing to evolve in the same organic manner? JAMES: Yes. We’ve been really lucky in that way. We’ve seen great success as a band. We’ve put out records consistently over 10 years, but this success has come slowly and seemed very natural. It was never a shot to the top. So yeah, if things continue on going up that will be great; if it plateaus, that is fine too. We go without expectations, just doing something that we love doing. {in}
IN: Obviously you’ve played around the world at some extravagant venues. As far as your live show goes, how does the huge festival setting compare to smaller, more intimate venues? JAMES: These are totally different animals. First of all, at a club show, it’s your crowd. They paid money to come see you. For a festival you could be playing for half of a crowd that has no idea who you are, that you have to win over. It makes you step up your game and makes you have to work at it. My favorite shows are still indoor smaller club shows. WHAT: Explosions in the Sky with Zammuto The intensity there is hard to match. WHEN: 8:30 p.m. Monday, June 18 (Doors at 7:30 p.m.) IN: How do you balance conWHERE: Soul Kitchen, 219 Dauphin St., tinuing to grow together as a Mobile, Ala. band and in your own individual COST: $15 advance, $18 day of show lives at this stage in the game? EVEN MASS MURDERERS NEED FRIENDS Norway is home to perhaps the most inmatefriendly prison in the world (as mentioned previously in “News of the Weird”), but the correctional system has an imminent crisis, as Anders Behring Breivik (the confessed killer of 77 people last year) is nearing formal conviction and sentencing. Officials fear the sociopathic Breivik will try to kill inmates to add to his toll, yet Norwegian law forbids solitary confinement as cruel. Consequently, according to a May report by Norway’s Verdens Gang newspaper, the officials have begun a search to select, hire and train appropriate “friends” to hang out with Breivik behind bars to win his trust and prevent further mayhem. Among Breivik’s favorite recreational distractions: chess and hockey. CULTURAL DIVERSITY Collections of comically poor translations are legion, but the Beijing municipal government, in sympathy with English-speaking restaurant-goers, published a helpful guidebook recently of what the restaurateurs were trying, though inartfully, to say. In an April interview with the authors, NBC News learned the contents of “Hand Shredded A$$ Meat” (sic) (merely donkey meat) and other baffling English descriptions (all taken from actual menus), such as “Cowboy Leg,” “Red-Burned Lion Head,” “Blow-up Flatfish With No Result,” and the very unhelpful “Tofu Made by Woman With Freckles” and “Strange Flavor Noodles.” • In the spirit of the empowerment of dissidents around the world, activists in Ukraine and South Africa recently erected downright disrespectful statues lampooning leaders. In Kiev and the western city of Lvov, Ukraine, activists unveiled 5-foot-high statues of former Soviet dictator Josef Stalin urinating. (Police in both cities took them down quickly, however.) And South African artist Brett Murray museum-exhibited a red, black and yellow acrylic painting of President Jacob Zuma (“Hail to the Thief II”) with his genitals exposed, an allusion to Zuma’s having beaten a rape charge in 2006. (The Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, which first resisted pressure, agreed in May to remove the painting.) • Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced in April that it would begin a national inquiry over the alarming number of bathtub deaths in 2011—nearly three times the number of those killed in traffic accidents. News reports pointed out that many Japanese workers relax in tubs at the end of the day, even when they have overimbibed and are vulnerable to drowning. WAIT—THAT’S ILLEGAL? (1) In Kent, Washington, in May, Yong Hyun Kim, 21, was charged with assault at a movie house. Annoyed by a group of kids in the row behind him who were constantly talking, laughing and throwing popcorn during “Titanic,” Yong slapped the nearest boy, bloodying his nose and knocking out a tooth. Germany, in May, a 61-year-old woman was fined the equivalent of almost $1,000 for assault. Frustrated by telemarketers’ constantly cold-calling her, she took it out on one by blowing a whistle into the telephone, allegedly causing permanent damage to the telemarketer’s hearing. LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Google Trends notes that five of the top seven countries in the world whose residents search “sex” are Muslim, and in Iran, especially, a “virtual cottage industry” has developed of clerics turning into amateur sexologists, according to the May/June Foreign Policy—often with mockable results. For example, one cleric declared, “If a person has intercourse with a cow, a sheep or a camel,” it is not proper to consume the animal’s milk. Leaders, from former president Abolhassan Bani-Sadr (who believed that women’s hair emits sexual rays) to the current Ayatollah Khamenei (who approves the concept of Islamic “temporary marriages” that justify quick assignations) promote internal friskiness while at the same time denouncing outsiders (especially Americans) for attempting to corrupt the country’s morals. • Two veteran Church of England vicars were in the news in May for their unique approaches. Rev. Andy Kelso left the church after 25 years to start an Elvis Presley Gospel Tribute act as “Elvis Prayersley.” Said Kelso, “I felt God say to me very strongly, ‘Take Elvis to the church.’” And Rev. Nick Davies of Cheltenham, England, promises to continue breathing fire part-way through his sermons (to mark Pentecost, in which the Holy Spirit descends on Jesus’ disciples, appearing as “tongues of flame”). • Hard Month for Gays and Lesbians: Internet video excerpts of church services, all posted during May, recorded Christian pastors prescribing harsh futures for homosexuals. Pastor Sean Harris (Fayetteville, N.C.) recommended roughing up a limp-wristed son if the boy acts effeminately (but said later he was joking). Pastor Ron Baity (Winston-Salem, N.C.) wants gays and lesbians “prosecuted” (though the excerpt was not clear what particular statute was violated). Pastor Charles Worley (Maiden, N.C.) wants gays and lesbians rounded up and isolated behind an electrified fence so they won’t breed to the larger population. Pastor Curtis Knapp (Seneca, Kan.) said “the government” should just kill them all (according to biblical commandment, he said). Pastor Dennis Leatherman (Oakland, Md.) likes “the idea” of killing them but added that it would be wrong. And at the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle in Greensburg, Ind., a 3-year-old boy’s rendition of “Ain’t no homo going to make it to heaven” also made it around the world on the Internet. {in} From Universal Press Syndicate Chuck Shepherd’s News Of The Weird © 2012 Chuck Shepherd

Good Eats:
Being a Gulf Coast boy, I love my seafood, and the two best spots in town are Peg Leg Pete’s on the Beach, and the Fish House downtown. Get your crab leg fill at Peg’s and your Grits a Ya Ya domination at Fish House. If it’s a Tuesday night, step next door to Atlas Oyster House for half-price sushi. Or keep things simple with soup and a sandwich at New Yorker Deli.
Retail Therapy:
I buy my booze at Richey’s East downtown. I do my grocery shopping at Apple Market on Scenic Highway. I’m pretty simple in the retail department, but I’ll plug my employer, Simoniz Car Wash one last time to hopefully get a pay raise.
Watering Holes:
Don’t want to leave East Hill? Chug beers at Wisteria. Want our hometown frozen deliciousness, the Bushwacker? Have a rager at the Sandshaker. Want live music and the two best bartenders in town? End O’ the Alley at Seville is your only option. And while you’re there, ask for my drink: The Austin. I can be found at any of these spots on the reg.
Nightlife:
If you absolutely-positively-without-adoubt want to get completely trashed and dance your sweet little ass off, go to Emerald City on a Saturday night. Ten dollar
drink and drown will ruin or, perhaps, immortalize you. Make it happen. If you want to enjoy the salt-air, take it to Flounders and knockout a few Diesel Fuels.
Outdoors:
It’s Pensacola, so we have to mention the beach! There just isn’t anyway around it. If you’re a runner, like me, downtown along Palafox and Bayfront Parkway is impossible to beat. And, of course, now we have the Wahoos and that amazing Community Maritime Park. Get out for a game, ASAP!

Arts & Culture:
I get all my art and culture at Famous Gabe’s Hula Moon Tattoos & Piercing. There are no better artists in town, period. If you haven’t let Mr. Smith, Carrie, Darren, or Lo put some permanent art on you yet, then you aren’t living. And while you’re there, make sure you have Special Ed prick you with something (I’m talking about body jewelry, get your mind out of the gutter).
Where you can have a great meal and a great time Featuring a Full Bar & a Full Sushi Bar
Never Miss Events/Festivals:
The Mullet Toss at the Flora-Bama is always must-see. Check it out the last weekend of every April. And to add in a little shameless self-promotion, I never miss a Stones Saturday. It’s a holiday the last Saturday of every month that some friends and me created where all you do is listen to the Rolling Stones all day and get plastered. Come enjoy it with us! {in}
