LIVE WELL NORTHWEST FLORIDA
Community leaders in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties have joined forces to promote solutions to long-standing health problems plaguing this community. The website LiveWellNWFL.org has been established to provide health care information and encourage communication about health issues. Work groups have been formed to tackle tobacco use, reduce obesity and encourage more efficient use of health facilities. All three problem-areas have been identified as costly deterrents to our economic development.
RON ROSTON The former head of the Uni-
versity of West Florida theater department and artistic director for the Pensacola Little Theatre passed away in August. Roston left an indelible mark on the acting community in Northwest Florida. His passion for theater raised the professional level of our community theater, inspired many to participate and attracted loyal patrons.
SOUL BOWL On Oct. 12, over 3,000 par-
ents, kids and friends celebrated youth sports at the “Soul Bowl,” the annual cross-town youth football rivalry played for the second year in a row at the Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Hosted by the Southern Youth Sports Association, the event featured soul food, entertainment and youth football matchups between the Pensacola Tigers, East Pensacola Rattlers and the Navarre Raiders. The event raised thousands of dollars for inner-city children to have equipment, uniforms, and other necessary items.
FLORIDA CASINOS The statistics aren’t looking good for those wanting to make Florida the next gambling mecca. The Spectrum Gaming Group has released its report on the potential effects of expanded gambling in the state. The researchers found that 93 percent of Florida’s current gambling revenues come from people living in the state, not tourists. Nonetheless, we expect the state legislature to still consider the idea. RAINBOW ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES Emerald Coast Utilities Authority
voted last summer to work with a local group, which included this Californiabased company, in building a “green” waste disposal facility that would have diverted its waste from the Escambia Countyowned Perdido Landfill. Now it appears Rainbow is bailing and ECUA may be left with egg on its face for the second time. The first “egg” was the botched sale of its Main Street property to an unknown Houston developer Aaron Wiese.
BOB DUDLEY The BP Group Chief
Executive made a promise to all of us living along the Gulf of Mexico that he would make things right after the 2010 BP oil disaster. We were led to believe that he would be more sensitive to our issues because he grew up in Mississippi. That hasn’t happened. A grassroots effort has begun to get Dudley fired—Dump Dudley. Watch it gain momentum over the next few weeks.

A LONG TIME COMING The American Planning Association has designated Palafox Street—from Wright Street to Pensacola Bay—as one of its 10 Great Streets for 2013. APA’s Great Places in America program names 30 exemplary streets, neighborhoods and public spaces to highlight the role planning and planners play in adding value to communities, including fostering economic growth and jobs. Palafox, the main drag for downtown Pensacola, was recognized for its European influences, mix of Spanish Colonial and Chicago School architecture, wide medians and sidewalks, and its planning, especially the conversion of the street back to a two-way thoroughfare. The rebirth of downtown Pensacola was anything but an overnight success. Many of those in city hall had little to do with changes that have led to the Palafox renaissance. Retired banker E.W. Hopkins deserves credit for the European flavor of south Palafox. His savings and loan, First Mutual, made many of the loans that encouraged property owners to renovate with balconies. Deborah Dunlap, who owns much of the east side of the 100 block, carried on that look on her buildings that surround the Saenger Theatre. It wasn’t that long ago that south Palafox was not only one-way, but it also was serpentine, weaving through downtown. Planners and city leaders spent nearly a decade straightening the street, paving the sidewalks with bricks.
Several businesses closed as the street work drove away customers. Maybe you remember these Palafox businesses: Art Bar, Ordon's, Page and Palette, Liza's, Pearson & Sons Outfitters, Palafox Trolley Restaurant, Frank Bennett's, Fattahi Art Gallery, Civil War Museum, Le Bistro and Victorian Tea Shop? In October 2008, the Pensacola City Council voted to open Palafox to two-way traffic. The change helped make Vinyl Music Hall, Bodacious Olive and Carmen’s Lunch Bar possible and improved the business prospects of all the restaurants and retail on the street. The same council also voted to demolish the old Bayfront Auditorium and replaced it with Plaza de Luna. Kim Kimbrough, former executive of the Downtown Improvement Board, brought Palafox Market to north Palafox. According to the city hall, the market is one of the country’s most-celebrated year-round farmers markets. The Urban Redevelopment Advisory Committee, chaired by Brian Hooper, pushed for bollards downtown to close off Palafox to traffic during Gallery Nights and festivals. With the help of DIB board member John Peacock and the Escambia County Commission, those bollards were installed last month. And these are just a few of the people, businesses and decisions that have made Palafox a great street. It was truly a team effort by several, civic-minded visionaries. {in} rick@inweekly.net

DIFFERENCE MAKER Palafox Street Named To Top 10 Great Streets List The American Planning Association (APA) has announced the designation of Palafox Street— from Wright Street to Pensacola Bay—as one of 10 Great Streets for 2013. The honor is a testament to the Pensacola’s Historic Preservation, Architecture Review and Downtown Improvement boards and to the business and property owners along this great street. Each year during National Community Planning Month, APA’s Great Places in America program names 30 exemplary streets, neighborhoods and public spaces to highlight the role planning and planners play in adding value to communities, including fostering economic growth and jobs. APA singled out Palafox for its European influences, eclectic mix of Spanish Colonial and Chicago School architecture, expansive medians and sidewalks, and the planning that has helped turn the street into an attractive and successful gateway to downtown Pensacola. “Historic architecture, spacious plazas, an attractive median, and wide sidewalks make Palafox Street a wonderful artery for pedestrians and motorists alike,” said APA CEO Paul Farmer, FAICP. “Planners also helped improve business activity along the street and enhanced Palafox as a successful entrance to downtown by converting the street back to a two-way thoroughfare.” The Pensacola City Council passed making Palafox two-way in October 2008. John Fogg was the mayor and the council included P.C. Wu, Sam Hall, Mike DeSorbo, Marty Donovan, John Jerralds, Jewel Cannada-Wynn, Ronald Townsend, Jack Nobles and Mike Wiggins. “Palafox Street is a big part of why Pensacola is such a great place in which to live, work, and play, and we are excited to see it recognized as a Great Street,” Mayor Hayward said in press release announcing the honor. Shaped by 250 years of British, Spanish and American influence, Palafox Street’s ornate buildings with sidewalk balconies juxtapose Spanish Colonial with Chicago School architecture. Two public spaces anchor the street—the Spanish-designed Plaza Ferdinand on Palafox between Government and Zaragoza Streets, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza. The plaza, located on Palafox at the intersection with Garden and Wright streets, hosts one of the country’s most-celebrated year-round farmers markets. The nine other APA 2013 Great Streets are: North and South Walnut Street, Milford, DE; Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu, HI; Bridge Street, Las Vegas, NM; C Street, Virginia City, NV; Market Street, Corning, NY; Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA; Broadway, Jim Thorpe, PA; The Strand, Galveston, TX; and West Beverley Street, Staunton, VA.

At the end of Palafox Wharf, locals and visitors alike have discovered Jaco’s Bayfront Bar & Grille to be one of the best places in town to sit and take in a sunset, and perhaps a hand muddled fresh fruit mojito. Chef Tricia Horton’s modern menu of Italian and Mediterranean inspired culinary creations have also added to Jaco’s popularity. “Tricia does such a great job at combining and creating flavors that those always seem to be a unique hit,” said General Manager David Hambrick, who stated that the restaurant’s signature flatbreads, the ahi tuna with the tempura vegetables, and glazed salmon salad are among the most popular. “We like to introduce a new wine special each month and have been very lucky to have some unique limited release wines that people seem to love,” said Hambrick. 997 S. BOTTLED UP
“I've always loved wine. Growing up, my father's advice was to work at something you love, so the wine store seemed a perfect fit for me,” said Charlotte Gordon, owner of Aragon Wine Market. “What I didn't realize is how much I would love meeting the people that come in the store and helping them find wine.” Open since 2008, Aragon Wine Market not only offers a vast selection of wines, but also wine tastings—including regular Thursday night events. An independent proprietor, Gordon has relationships with distributors and often hosts representatives from wineries who pour during the tastings. “Mostly, I have wine distributors come to the store to sample different wines for me to consider. Sometimes I find a wine that I just love and bring it into the store,” said Gordon. “When I'm sampling wines I often purchase something because I think a specific customer will like the wine.” For those who have a hard time making their mind up, Gordon also offers case discounts in case you get swept up in the rows of wine offerings, which you likely will. 27 S. 9th Ave., aragonwinemarket.com
WEST NAVY BLUE
“Have you been Blue Mooned?” With Blue Moon Antique Mall having just celebrated its 11th anniversary in September, the answer to that question is likely "yes" for most folks. Time has shown that Blue Moon Antique Mall holds a special place in the hearts of many lovers of old school items. Owner Andrea Wessel feels it’s the range of goods that October 17, 2013
keep people coming back to visit the 12,700 square foot store. “We not only sell antiques, but we have good old fashioned made in the USA, mid-century modern, home décor, collectibles, new stuff, rescued, recycled, refinished and previously loved furniture and goods of all kinds,” said Wessel. “The reward is seeing customers find that special item for their home or office and find it affordably priced. It puts a smile on their face and that makes it fun for us.” The friendliness of the staff and organization of the store also score big points from what Wessel sees. “We love seeing products go to new homes, customers being excited about their purchases and the items finding a home where they will be appreciated.” 3271 W. ONE OF A KIND DESIGN
When it comes to jewelry and accessories, Jessica Bosley typically found herself searching for the perfect piece that no one else had. Rather than remaining on the constant hunt, she decided to create these one of a kind pieces herself, and so, House of Bosley was born. Granted there is no actual “house” involved, at least not yet, but Bosley’s made to order pieces have already made their way across town and have been featured in a variety of local bridal shoots, and recently landed on the cover of local FIVE magazine. “I would say my style is very eclectic, funky and unique like myself,” said Bosley. “I design everything from pearl necklaces and antique rhinestone bridal jewelry to edgier things such as spikes and skull statement necklaces. Open for six years, Fixed on Fitness has led the way in Pensacola outdoor fitness bootcamp instruction. Kenzie Presnell cofounded FOF with her husband, Josh. The couple focuses on personalizing workouts for their clients, which Presnell believes is one factor that distinguishes Fixed on Fitness. “The variety, creativity, and intensity of the workouts, the wide range of fitness levels within the classes, the community atmosphere, and the results achieved with FOF makes Fixed on Fitness a favorite among fitness programs,” said Presnell. “We get to see clients transform not only physically, but mentally as well. We are so thankful to be able to do what we love and to work with some of the most awesome people in Pensacola.” The business expanded in 2011 with the addition of programs in Perdido Key and again in 2012, adding training in Pace. “We are excited to put our efforts into growing all three of our locations, making people healthier, and exceeding the expectations of our clients,” said Presnell. fixedonfitness.com

BANKING ON A HANDSHAKE
Led by local business and community leader, Buzz Ritchie, Gulf Coast Community Bank has proven that bigger isn’t always better. It all goes back to the idea of community bank service. And it all starts with a handshake and a face. “We know this community well and we want to make certain that those who grew accustomed to a handshake and a personal face on a transaction can get that kind of service again,” said Ritchie. “Customers know they can trust us and they are in good hands when they bank with us.” Ritchie is joined by a team of experienced bankers and dedicated staff members who are longtime residents of Northwest Florida and who share his commitment to community service. When they aren’t out serving the community through involvement with organizations such as Rebuild Northwest Florida, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, and the United Way, or accounting for your money, you can frequently find the bank team inviting the community in to socialize, sip wine and view work from local artists on Gallery Night. 40 N. THE SEA AND HER SHORES
Local artist Margaret Biggs is inspired by both the sea and the surrounding shores. Through her paintings, she seeks to recreate a sense of peace and calm that rolls in with each wave that breaks on the shores. “Whether it is the symmetry and color of a seashell or the patterns in the dampened sand, the seashore fascinates me and fills me with a sense of wonder,” she said. “It is this magic and inner peace I find on the beach that I strive to communicate to the viewer.” Her work can be found as staples amongst various coastal establishments—from galleries, to banks to

THE GROUP EFFECT
What do the terms teamwork, respect, integrity, generosity, learning and measurable achievement all have in common? They’ve each become synonymous with the group effect of Studer Group. “We are a passionate group of people who are motivated to have purpose, do worthwhile work and make a difference,” said Debbie Ritchie, COO/Operations Leader. “Consequently that is reflected in our work environment. We measure what’s important and focus on improvement until we get it right.” This starts with their leader, Quint Studer, who radiates this practice of service through his own organization and any outside organization his team works to serve. “Studer Group is fully committed to its employees and the local community, which is reflected in how we treat those we work with and those we serve,” said Ritchie. In case you were left wondering if Studer Group has fun, fret not. They are equally committed to the quality of a well-rounded life. “We also recognize the importance of fun so our work environment reflects that too,” said Ritchie. “We promote activities that let us enjoy each other away

Though some may criticize government for not getting things done, Andy Terhaar seems determined to bust that stereotype, at least in his own service. “I’m trying to make sure there is accountability, to get issues resolved in a timely manner,” Terhaar said. “It’s about getting things done so people can see results.” During his first year serving as the City Council Member for District 3, he has put action behind those words by not only negotiating a use agreement between the Community Maritime Park Associates and Northwest Florida Professional Baseball, Inc./The Blue Wahoos, but also negotiating a lease for the city-owned property adjacent to the Montessori School of Pensacola for use in physical education activities. When not busy producing tangible results for the city, Terhaar utilizes his skills and background in commercial real estate in his “day job” working as a Property Manager for Neal & Company. Ultimately, Terhaar says he most enjoys interacting with new people. “Being on the City Council has broadened my reach in that way, has me interacting with more people in the community.” 222 W. THE CAT’S MEOW
This November will mark 10 whole years that Cat Country 98.7 has been on the air, not to mention six years for NewsRadio 1620. While several local radio stations are just playing syndicated shows, Cat Country/NewsRadio is the only locally owned and operated station. “Our mission is to serve the community in any way we can,” said General Manager and owner Mary Hoxeng. Whether you’re jamming out to Taylor Swift, listening to local news, or catching up with your favorite DJs, the radio station is keeping you entertained throughout the day. Beyond the radio waves, it’s rare to head to a Gulf Coast event and not see the country station’s “cool cat” mascot hanging out with the crowd and handing out free swag. It’s all part of the station’s service. The best part of owning a radio station in Pensacola is the people, Hoxeng said. catcountry987.com

When that product is Kia AutoSport of Pensacola, it makes the ads that much better. “Great agencies bask in the light of their clients,” said Steve Lorenzo, managing partner of JFK Advertising, brains behind Kia AutoSport of Pensacola’s advertising since 1999. While JFK’s Kia ad contracts extend far past Pensacola, when it comes to Pensacola specifically, Lorenzo is quick to note, “They are one of the top performing Kia dealerships in the country. They make us look good.” He also touts General 19

DON'T HATE
If you've seen any of the "I hate Joe Zarzaur " ads on billboards or in newspa-
pers, you've probably done a double take. The Pensacola trial lawyer was inspired to start the campaign after winning a case that awarded his client $9.3 million against Ethicon EndoSurgery, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. "The other inspiration was the fact that I hate typical lawyer ads," Zarzaur explained. And Zarzaur is not your typical lawyer. "One percent of Florida lawyers have qualifications like mine," he said. "I am a civil trial specialist according to the Florida Bar. Most importantly, I have a track record at the courthouse for leaving with verdicts that most would not have expected." One hundred percent of Zarzaur's cases are wrongful death and personal injury, none of which he takes lightly. "I try to put my clients in the most powerful bargaining position possible," he said. "They [insurance companies] know that when I show up on a case that they have two choices: Be reasonable and pay what they should or get ready for a battle at the courthouse. It certainly helps that I love helping my clients and my job." 11 Romana St., ihatejoezarzaur.com

We certainly did a double take of our own this summer, especially when the newsprint in question we recognized as our own. fashion, out of recycled Independent News issues—including our Literally Local summer food guide—and strutted around downtown during the July 19 Gallery Night, completing their looks with hair, makeup and the full effects. Their efforts paid off—twofold and then some. Eimaj Spa, Esthetics, & Hair Studio raked up quite a few Best of the Coast nods, including Best Hair Salon. And on top of garnering quite a bit of attention on the street on said Gallery Night, thanks to photographer Jessi Field, photo documentation landed in the Pensacola Museum of Art’s “24 Hours in Downtown Pensacola” photo exhibit, a collection of photos taken around downtown Pensacola in a 24-hour time slot. Owner of Eimaj Spa, Esthetics, & Hair Studio Lydia Nixon enlightened us about this “eimajinative” undertaking.
IN: Who gets the credit as the brains behind these operations? And which ladies were actually sporting the looks? NIXON: Hair Stylists: Maxine Lyvers (Runner Up Best Wedding Hair Stylist) and Cathy Sheldon (Runner Up Best Wedding Hair Stylist) Photographer: Jessi Field (Runner Up Best Photography and Best Wedding Photography) Models: Lily Shimp, Lydia Nixon, & Maia Jones (pictured left to right) Makeup Artist: Sarah Peake Dress Creation Crew: Lily Shimp, Oksana Bagaas, Maxine Lyvers, Heather Shimp Support Team: Robyn Dohn and Megan Jade
IN: What kind of response did you receive from those you encountered? NIXON: It took us one hour to walk two blocks down Palafox. People wanted to know what was going on and why were dressed in Independent newspapers. When we told them about the voting that was currently happening in the Independent News for local businesses, they asked if we worked for the paper. They were pleasantly surprised to find out that we were out encouraging people to cast a vote to support local businesses. We must have taken hundreds of photos with locals, especially children, because they loved the dress idea and thought we looked like princesses.
IN: What was your IN-spiration? NIXON: We braved the Pensacola Gallery Night crowd and rocked the Independent News “Best of the Coast” dresses we created in spirit of the Best of the Coast 2013. Hairstylist Maxine Lyvers’ concept for this newspaper dress event came to life in less than 72 hours of concept. We wanted to grab Pensacola’s attention and let them know the voting was currently going on in this local paper. More importantly, we wanted to bring awareness that this is a way to show your support for your local business favorites.
IN: A photo documenting the spectacular has been part of PMA’s “24 Hours in Downtown Pensacola” exhibit. Is that right? NIXON: Yes, it was chosen from thousands of photos that were submitted. Jessi Field took our professional pictures all night and submitted this photo to the exhibit. IN: This certainly isn’t your first Gallery Night dress up spectacular, and I feel sure it won’t be your last. Is that a fair assumption? NIXON: Yes! Countdown to Dracula by Sarah McCartan
In addition to wowing the audience with a time of non-stop dance and theatrical storytelling, amid a sea of top-
What has become the defining aesthetic of Ballet Pensacola has heightened their appeal and impact both in the local community, and beyond. According to Steinert, it’s increased the “visual impact” of Ballet Pensacola, in comparison to previous years. “The biggest difference is the visual impact that we have. Now with two nationally recognized choreographers and nationally recognized set and costume designers,” he explained. “Since we started we have always had topnotch performers and now our productions’ values are increasing as well.” On top of home performances, this season Pensacola Ballet kicks off a National Tour beginning in February 2014, when the Company will make its first stop a visit to Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. Here they will be involved in community education programs, on top of presenting a five night series of public performances, showcasing work from previous performances including “Thunderstruck”—a show fans might remember as the kick off performance for last year’s season. “With that many nights and shows, we mix it up,” said Steinert. “Most people will attend a couple of times and get to see a different show each night. And rehearsals are open to the public in these sort of residencies.” For now, Ballet Pensacola plans on one such residency a season and are booked through 2016. “I would rather start small and be fabulous, than start big and be stupid,” said Steinert. “Ballet Pensacola, while it has an unusual vibe—people are asking for us.” {in}
“I’m not much interested in just putting swans on stage. I like to push the envelope, and the aesthetic is very much ‘Ballet Pensacola.’” Richard Steinert
photo by Meg Baisden Swooping in with a cape and bearing a pointed grin, while dancing across the stage in a wistful yet electrifying fashion is none other than Count Dracula. Just in time for Halloween, Pensacola Ballet kicks off its 2013-2014 season with the return of “Dracula.” Presented first by Pensacola Ballet in 2011, Artistic Director Richard Steinert’s rendition evokes design elements from the steam punk movement— mixing the old with the new—including a more modernized take on vampires. From contemporary dance devotees to those who simply yearn to bask in the glory of a good thrill, Ballet Pensacola combines said realms into a munificent, gut-grabbing performance, resulting in “Dracula.” “It’s not only great dancing—it’s a visceral event right from the beginning,” said Steinert. “You get your gut grabbed as soon as the curtain goes up.” Although Steinert first introduced his take on the classic 1897 novel by Irish author Bam Stoker to the Pensacola cultural community in 2011, he originally unveiled this inOctober 17, 2013
terpretation in his previous stomping ground of Hartford, Conn. 18 years ago. While this year’s encore performance on the local front will possess much of the same style, there are enhanced features introduced into the mix for this go round. After all, what’s a show without a few surprises? “I am no good at remounting my ballets without changing them,” said Steinert. “We have new sets and costumes. We’ve expanded the story a little bit, and added new movements of dance and new characters. While the feel is very much the same, as the dancers grow I like to make sure we show that growth to everyone.” When it comes to the stars of the show— the four lead positions are once again filled by the Company’s four principal artists. According to Steinert, “Tyler Day is reprising his role as Dracula. Kristen Springer is Lucy [Westenra] again. Samuel Joseph Mounce is Jonathan Harker and Kayla Bartlett is Mina [Murray].” These four are a part of the 14 member dance troupe that make up Ballet Pensacola’s professional ensemble—the Company Artists.
notch costumes, once again, this year’s performance invites the audience to dress up in costumes of their own. And what perfect timing with the second set of shows falling the weekend directly before Halloween. The event is considered to be family-friendly, as Steinert notes that children ages 10 and up should have no qualms with the content. “There’s nothing terribly dark, or vulgar—although the vampires can get a little sexy,” he said. Still, he recounts one child of a much younger age leaving a previous showing. “It may be a little much for the six-year-old heart,” he suggested. “Dracula” isn’t only a show itself, and certainly not a one hit wonder for Ballet Pensacola. Like any proper season opener, the performance sets the tone for what’s in store the remainder of the season—a season Steinert is especially excited about. “One of our board members says, ‘This is not your mother’s ballet company’ and that is sort of my mantra. I much prefer more contemporary works. We use clasWHEN: 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 – 19 and Oct. 25 – 26 sically trained dancers who can WHERE: Pensacola Cultural Center, 400 S. dance in many ways. Wine and Dine for WSRE
There is just something about food and wine that brings people together. For 25 years, WSRE’s Food and Wine Classics have been bringing great food to the community and this year, with three events, the annual fundraiser is bigger than ever. “To celebrate 25 years of Food and Wine Classics, we decided to go all out this year and have three events rather than just one,” said Robin McArthur, manager of marketing and promotions for WSRE. “We have a whole weekend of events planned.”
The celebration starts on Friday with an opening night “Sunset Salute” Reception and walkabout tasting at the newly opened Red Fish, Blue Fish on Pensacola Beach. The event features tastings from 13 local chefs who will each prepare special dishes. Republic National Distributing, a partner for the event, will be providing a wine pairing for each dish. “Each wine is handpicked based on the menu the chefs selected and they really pair those carefully,” said McArthur. For those who have a love of wine, a representative from Republic National Distributing will be available to share knowledge on the wines selected. “They will have people on hand who offer more information on the wine, the process, and the winery it comes from,” McArthur said. “You get to sample and learn about a lot of really different good wines.” On Saturday, WSRE will hold a VIP dinner and dance featuring former White House Executive Pastry Chef Roland Mesnier at the Hilton on Pensacola Beach. Mesnier and four local, award winning chefs will be preparing a one-of-a-kind four-course meal for this exclusive event. The dinner will be carefully paired with a
said McArthur. “It’s our mission to help support an educated community and help provide the tools they need to further their education, learning, and to just grow. It benefits everybody in the end.” The event also promises to be an educational experience by exposing event-goers to new foods and wines. As McArthur said, “If you really like food and like to try new things, this will be your cup of tea.” Tickets are available for all events and seating is limited for the VIP Dinner and Dance and for “Biscuits n’ Bubbly.” {in}

“It gives local design firms a way to highlight creative talents beyond the typical built environment of buildings, interiors and sites.” Although the “Canstructures” will be unveiled during Gallery Night, these tedious assemblies require strategic mapping, creativity, and of course—building. “Teams typically work a couple of months preparing for Canstruction. This includes fundraising, shopping for and ordering cans, and of course, the design of sculptures,” Kariher said. This design is certainly not a thrown together undertaking, but rather something that is thoughtfully executed. “Designing creative sculptures typically begins with hand sketches by architects and can even develop into 3D computer models and renderings of sculptures in order to fully visualize design before the entry is actually built,” he said. Just how many cans are included in each design? To get a better feel for the scope of these projects, individual sculptures can include up to 1000 or 2000 cans with as many as 36 varieties in one sculpture—making the build possibilities that much more colorful. On top of handing out awards throughout the evening in several categories, such as “Best Use of Labels” and “Judge’s Favorite,” attendees who tour the installations can vote for what will be crowned the “People’s Choice Award.” Be sure to stop by the ATM before you enter Artel so you’ll have some dollar bills on hand. In years past, the event has made quite a monumental impact on the local community through contributions made to Manna. “Canstruction has raised over $5,000 since its inception,” said Executive Director of Manna Food Pantries DeDe Flounlacker. “Equally important are the 51,568 pounds of food that have been raised.” On top of the donations received from voting, this year they hope to raise between six and seven thousand pounds of food that will immediately go toward feeding our local community. According to Flounlacker, “All money from the event will be used to purchase nutritious food like canned fruit and vegetables, and the food collected will be distributed likely within the next two months.” For a full listing of this month’s Gallery Night participants, visit downtownpensacola.com. {in}

Pearl Jam – ‘LIGHTNING BOLT’
The following statement is not necessarily a matter of opinion: Pearl Jam matters. In the landscape of what is important within the world of popular rock music, Pearl Jam will always matter. The band has written its chapter well enough that they could vanish from the map right now and there would never be a moment in their catalog where one could
838 3
observably say, “This is where they fell off and became immaterial.” While the band’s post-“Vitalogy” career hasn’t been all high points, they have never released a “Reload,” they have never made a desperate publicity stunt, and they will never allow Chester Bennington to sing for them. To say the very least, Pearl Jam’s integrity as a band speaks volumes about the five men within, and gives a glimpse of the ethical dynamics which have ensured that Pearl Jam have claimed a spot in music history by their own merit. “Lightning Bolt,” Pearl Jam’s 10th studio album, comes 22 years after the release of their breakthrough, “Ten,” and finds the band, above all else, comfortable. This is what came to mind for me when I watched Pearl Jam at DeLuna Fest, one year ago this month. They’re five men who are masters at their craft and they are completely comfortable in the music they are playing and writing. There is plenty to grasp onto during the 48 minutes of “Lightning Bolt,” including poignancy in songs like second single “Sirens,” and the lean catchiness in songs like opener “Getaway,” or the album’s title
track. This new long player offers what Pearl Jam always has, accessible alternative rock, while displaying the growth and confidence the band has experienced in its 23 years together. With every new album, there is also a sense of fear when it comes to one of my favorite bands: “Please, God, don’t let this be their ‘Coda.’” Pearl Jam pleasantly surprise and impress every time, and I feel foolish for having my doubts. One day, I’ll learn. “Lightning Bolt” is out now via Monkeywrench Records/Republic Records.
IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD:
White Denim
Sometimes, you don’t really notice that something is missing until something else presents itself to fill the unseen void. Over the past few years of indie rock, there have been revivals of several styles of music from the past few decades. British punk, new wave, blues rock, and disco have all seen their share of the revamp spotlight in the past 10 years or so. Southern rock had quite the revival in My Morning Jacket, early Kings of Leon,
and Drive-By Truckers continuing to do what they do best. However, all the while there was a particular brand of Southern rock, infectious and easy to groove with, most notably made famous by bands like Molly Hatchet and .38 Special, which maintained a small scale in the Southern rock redux. Texas’ White Denim has stepped up to the plate to fill this gap, and they are more than qualified. When I first heard them a couple of years ago with their album “D,” I had a difficult time connecting. It was riffy psychedelic rock, which honestly felt half-hearted and forgettable. When I discovered new single, “Pretty Green,” I wasn’t all that excited to listen to it. With one play, everything I thought I knew about White Denim vanished, and I realized they had grown into what they were meant to be. Still riff heavy, but now much more refined and infused with Southern party rock and plenty of soul, new album, “Corsicana Lemonade,” is guaranteed to hook and satisfy. Check out the video online for “Pretty Green” and be on the lookout for “Corsicana Lemonade,” out October 29 via Downtown Records. {in}

Class of 2014 SIMSOC Weekend The Leadership Pensacola (LeaP) Class of 2014 members have completed Part 1 of their simulated society (SIMSOC) weekend retreat. The class enjoyed a beautiful day out on Pensacola Beach, hearing a “Critical Communication” presentation from Studer Group’s Kelly Dickey and participating in a Myers-Briggs Simulated Company Exercise with Tom Knox and Jim Guttman from Landrum Companies. The class also made final presentations for this year’s LeaP class project selection and are excited to announce their plan with the Pensacola community very soon. Part 2 of the SIMSOC retreat, which was postponed due to inclement weather, will consist of a dynamic group simulation game that teaches participants how to cope with the daily problems of governing society. It has been rescheduled for January. A huge thanks are due to LeaP alumni and Day Chairs Beth Skarda (2010), Ted Gorder (2010), Robin Larrieu (2013), Mary Hoxeng (2007) and Sean Quigley (2008) for planning a wonderful event.

news of the weird THE BAR IS ALWAYS OPEN A 61-year-old Texas man admitted to a hospital not long ago appearing to be falling-down-drunk, even though denying having had even a single drink, was discovered to be unintentionally manufacturing beer in his stomach. With "autobrewery syndrome," stomach-based yeast automatically ferments all starches (even vegetables or grains) passing through, converting them into ethanol. Normally, natural stomach bacteria control the yeast, but if, for example, antibiotics had inadvertently eliminated the bacteria, the yeast would prevail. The case was reported in a recent International Journal of Clinical Medicine. GOVERNMENT IN ACTION Update: As several additional states debate permitting marijuana use by a doctor's prescription, Irvin Rosenfeld presented his own experience in August to a packed house at Kentucky's state capitol. Rosenfeld suffers from painful bone tumors (diagnosed, with a poor prognosis, in 1963) and began smoking dope in the federal government's Compassionate Investigational Drug program in 1982—since then consuming 130,000 government-supplied joints (12 per day, carefully measured), which he said absolutely had prolonged his life. "I didn't ask for my bone disease," he said. "All I asked for is the best medicine possible." • While Congress struggled recently to pass a budget or an increase to the national debt limit, one program made it through rather easily, according to a September New York Times report: farm subsidies for inactive "farmers." The subsidies were renewed, based on a 2008 law, virtually assuring that more than 18,000 in-name-only farmers (who received $24 million last year) will not be cut off. Included, according to a 2012 Government Accountability Office report, were recipients at 2,300 "farms" that had not grown a single crop in five years (including 622 without a crop in 10 years). • "Close Enough for Government Work": The security contractor USIS, which does $2.45 billion worth of background checks for the National Security Agency and other departments (and had cleared file-leaker
by Chuck Shepherd
Edward Snowden and the Washington Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis), gets paid only for completed files. However, full background checks often require months of work, and at some point, reported The New York Times in September, when USIS needed cash, it would "flush" still-open files, treating them as completed, and submit them for payment— as happened with the files of Snowden and Alexis. In both cases, reported the Times, subsequent, crucial information failed to make it into the flushed files. GREAT ART! The missing element in obtuse doctoral dissertations in science is that they cannot be danced to, according to writer John Bohannon and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which has established an annual "Dance Your Ph.D" video competition, and this year's finalists were being selected at press time. Sarah Wilk was an entrant, featured in a Wall Street Journal report using glowing green balls and a flaming HulaHoop to help illustrate her "Odd-Z Transactinide Compound Nucleus Reactions Including Discovery of 260-Bh." So was Peter Liddicoat, using a chorus line of a juggler and a ballerina and others for "Evolution of Nanostructural Architecture in 7000 Series Aluminum Alloys During Strengthening by Age-Hardening and Severe Plastic Deformation." • Steven Cohen, eager to make a point that his country of residence, France, is more oppressive to artists than his native South Africa, staged a one-man demonstration at the Eiffel Tower in September. Wearing a bird outfit, tights and a garter, he had for some reason tethered a live chicken to his exposed penis with a long ribbon. After Cohen was arrested for indecent exposure, his lawyer complained that her client had been kept in custody too long for such a minor charge. "France," she exclaimed, "is throwing artists in prison." {in}
