LAURA KAISER The president and CEO of Sacred Heart Health System has been named to “56 Women Hospital and Healthcare Leaders to Know,” a list of influential U.S. female healthcare leaders compiled annually by Becker’s Hospital Review. Kaiser was chosen based on her critical management and leadership skills, including oversight of hospital or health system operations, financial turnarounds and quality improvement initiatives. She headed Sacred Heart Health System since 2009 and also serves as the Ascension Health ministry market leader for the Gulf/Florida region, with oversight of facilities in seven states.

FLORIDA LEGISLATURE The state economists are projecting a huge drop in public education funding for the 201213 budget, about $1.2 billion if Florida lawmakers keep the same funding level. The Republican governor and the lawmakers love to rail at the White House for its spending, but the state’s public education system has been propped up with federal stimulus dollars to the tune of $554 million. That goes away next year. You should always be careful what you ask for.

FORREST GIBBS The former asphalt

salesman landed the marketing gig for the Escambia County Equestrian Center, beating out 63 other applicants and negotiating a salary that made him one of the highest paid marketing coordinators in the area. And he’s never held a marketing job before. It was the American Dream … until the daily newspaper found out about it.

UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA The

university opened recently the UWF Military and Veterans Resource Center to assist its more than 2,500 military and veteran students in the transition from military to civilian life. As IN has reported (Independent News, “When Yellow Ribbons Aren’t Enough,” Sept. 22), the suicide rate among veterans returning from tours in Iraq and Afghanistan is alarming. This center should make a difference.

RICK SCOTT Florida’s governor is probusiness and anti-welfare. He cut corporate taxes and mandated drug testing of welfare recipients, which hits the right Tea Party notes. The corporate tax cuts are fueling the state budget shortfall and the drug testing has been a money loser. Only 32 temporary assistance applicants in Florida failed their required drug tests while 7,030 passed, a net loss of $200,000 to the state. NELSON’S GOP OPPONENTS For those who think that U.S. Senator Bill Nelson is vulnerable, they need to check out the latest campaign finance reports. The Democrat incumbent raised $1.9 million in the last quarter and has $7.5 million in the bank. The frontrunner in the GOP primary, former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner raised $535,000 and only has $786,000 in the bank.

OUT OF TOUCH LEADERS In January 2009 he predicted the Tea Party, “Arab Spring” and even the Occupy movement. Gerald Celente, CEO and founder of the Trends Research Institute, saw it all when I interviewed him. The self-proclaimed “political atheist” had successfully predicted 12 months earlier on my “IN Your Head” radio show the collapse of the U.S. financial markets. He had also predicted the 1987 stock market crash, the fall of the Soviet Union, the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, the dot-com bubble burst and the subprime mortgage crisis. Celente told me in the phone interview that politicians would put the squeeze on taxpayers as local, state and federal governments tried to keep their programs, benefits and pensions while financing stimulus packages and bailout programs. “There is going to be a revolution, and it’s either going to be violent or peaceful,” he said. “It will be violent if the politicians keep trying to hold on to what they have and keep resisting citizens’ demands.” People are fed up. They have seen the federal government bail out the major banks and Wall Street stock market firms without receiving any relief on their mortgages, credit card debt or student loans. Republican governors and state legislatures have cut corporate taxes and funded incentives to attract businesses to their states, while cutting the funds for education, Medicaid and social services. Barack Obama was elected to change the system, but little change has taken place. His administration has failed to prosecute those who profited from the

toxic asset funds created in the last decade and which are now worthless. His stimulus package rescued the banks and the auto industry, but not Main Street. The ideological gridlock in Washington, D.C . has hurt the economic recovery. During the Clinton administration, the Republican-controlled Congress set aside differences and worked out compromises for the good of the country. Today’s Congress acts like petulant 3-year-olds who have to get their way regardless of the consequences. People are feeling the squeeze. They are living on the margins, seeing their jobs in jeopardy, sinking further in debt and feeling anxious over foreclosures. And worse, they feel powerless to do anything about it. Celente shared this old saying from the Bronx, “When people lose everything, they lose it.” The Occupy movement is an effort to gain some control and force decision-makers to realize the reality of their decisions and indecision. It’s not a Marxist movement, as hate-monger Glenn Beck so badly wants it to be so that he can stay relevant. It’s people saying that they have had enough. The movement may seem unfocused and its outcomes uncertain, but their efforts do have meaning. Any government or political ideology that overlooks the common people will spawn outcries like the Occupy movement. Those leaders who understand this will stay in office. {in} rick@inweekly.net

Occupy Pensacola Digs In By Jeremy Morrison When the sun sets it gets dark, especially when the power’s off. “They turned off our power,” said Gary Paull Jr. Monday night, Oct. 17. “So, they’re trying to wait us out, push us out.” Since Oct. 15, downtown’s Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza has been home to the Occupy Pensacola movement. Spurred by the ongoing Occupy Wall Street, the local event is part of a nationwide protest that began in mid-September in New York City’s financial district.

Travis Peterson, with Mayor Ashton Hayward’s office, said he thought the power issue was probably non-related and routine, and that the city would be taking a wait-and-see approach to the ongoing protests. “We’re working to make sure we have a clear understanding of their expectations,” Peterson said. “And that they have a clear understanding of ours.’” Hundreds of people filled the plaza during Occupy Pensacola’s first day. Since the expiration of the group’s permit that night, the crowd has fluctuated, with a consistent three dozen or so people sticking to the plaza around the clock. Some Occupy participants approached Mayor Hayward during one of his neigh-

borhood meetings on Oct. 17. They wanted to know what to expect from the city. “They were polite, they were respectful, they made their case,” Peterson said, adding that the Mayor understands their frustrations and supports their right to vocalize such. “That’s what democracy is all about.” One such discontent taking her concerns to the street is Katie Krasinski. “The root of it is corruption,” she said at Saturday protest, holding a sign depicting Jesus Christ upending the temple’s marketplace. “I’ve been called a communist, I’ve been called an atheist,” Krasinski said. “I’m a good mom who doesn’t want to go through another Great Depression.”

As the owner of local Dolce Vita Art Bar, Krasinski has opened up her storefront to the Occupy movement. She’s offered it up as a place for the local group to meet, discuss issues, make signs, or whatever else needs to be taken care of. “I’m in it,” Krasinski said, “to do whatever I can.” Pensacola Police Chief Chip Simmons said he has seen no problems thus far with the event.

UKRANIAN FIELD TRIP Medical Center Clinic hosts delegation by Jeremy Morrison

“I’m a good mom who doesn’t want to go through another Great Depression.” Katie Krasinski “For right now, they are peaceful, they are off the roadway, they are not making a mess,” said Simmons, adding that the police were giving the group some “leeway.” The plaza sidewalks now feature chalk drawings, makeshift concession tables and tents off to the side. It’s a colorful scene, but not quite as bold as the group’s initial presence. Throughout that first day Saturday, Occupiers paraded the plaza with homemade signs. They stood on a cooler and shouted their protests through a bullhorn. Some people wore Guy Fawkesmasks. One man played an accordion. Stealing a moment off to the side of the event Saturday, Paull had said he wasn’t sure what might happen if people decided to stay. “I don’t know how the city is going to respond,” he said. “But I do know that there are people that want to occupy in earnest.” In other city’s where protesters have refused to disband their Occupy event, police have in some cases taken a heavyhanded approach. New York, in particular, has proven rough, with batons and pepper spray being employed by the authorities. “That’s not going to happen,” Peterson said, stressing that the city is trying to work with the Occupy participants. Paull said he didn’t know if the widespread Occupy events would prove successful at their loosely defined task of overhauling a corrupt system. “Our forefathers asked the same exact thing,” he said. “I consider myself a realist, but I have high hopes for change.” For ongoing coverage of Occupy Pensacola, visit inweekly.net {in}

Dr. Donald Dewey operating in Ukraine His plain gray suit looked almost drab in the sharp, bright sleekness of the Medical Center Clinic boardroom. It sucked up the space’s pizzaz and replaced it with a grim realism that can only come from working with sick children on the cheap. Oleksandr Astakhov played with a drink coaster as he spoke, using it to punctuate certain points. His interpreter waited patiently, until finally the Ukrainian physician cracked a smile and placed the coaster on the table. “I’d like to say,” translated Svitlana Shkolenko, “there is no country in the world that is satisfied with the level of care in their country–problems of different levels.” The Ukrainian medical delegation has just stepped off the plane. They are midway through a short stateside tour. As head of Crimea’s medical association, Astakhov hopes to gain knowledge through visiting American medical facilities that he can use upon his return home. “They’re going to get the full scope of how it is to run a facility without government involvement,” explained Brittan Snelling, the Medical Center Clinic’s senior marketing representative. Earlier, while waiting for the delegation to arrive, Snelling had explained the origin for the Ukraine-Medical Center Clinic relationship. A few months back, one of the center’s physicians traveled to the country on a medical mission trip.

Dr. Donald Dewey, in conjunction with Med Assist USA, a children’s foundation in Tallahassee, went to Ukraine in April. While there, he performed 21 surgeries in three days on orphans. “There’s never a lack of patients to operate on, there is however a lack of equipment and supplies,” he said. “You kind of work by the seat of your pants. It’s fascinating to me.” The population of Crimea is a bit over two million. There are 400,000 children. The heath care system is entirely government-funded. But recently, Ukraine has begun flirting with the idea of injecting some form of privatization into their health care system. It’s still a very new concept, but apparently Ukranian President Viktor Yanukovych is seen as sympathetic to the idea. While the Ukrainians are looking forward to gaining insight into a privatelyrun facility, Astakhov also said he’s not looking to the U.S. health care model for all the answers. He knows they’re not to be found there. “You spend a lot of money and your system is not effective,” he said, pausing to wait for the translation before continuing. “You have to work on that. And decide how to provide medical assistance to people who are not insured.” For The Independent News’s complete story on the Ukrainian Medical Delegation, visit inweekly.net {in}

SELLING PARADISE

Inside the Bed Tax Battle By Jeremy Morrison Sugar white sand. Sparkling emerald water. The Blue Angels, history and seafood. The greater Pensacola area has some pretty attractive draws. Paradise has never been a tough sell. No one disagrees on that point. The big debate in Escambia County is just who should be doing the selling. Or, more to the point, who should govern how the tourism development taxes, also known as “bed taxes,” are spent?

A ROOM WITHOUT A VIEW

High above Pensacola Beach, the air tastes sweeter and the sky seems closer. Between the waves and infinity, the curvature of Earth almost reveals itself. Julian MacQueen puts on his sunglasses and takes a deep breath. He walks to the balcony and takes it all in. Down below, the beach is set up for the upcoming DeLuna Fest. It’s a big weekend. The festival has rented out all three of MacQueen’s hotels. As CEO of Innisfree Hotels, MacQueen is a big player in the local lodging game. He estimates that his properties generate about a quarter of the annual bed tax in Escambia County. And he’d like more of a say in how those revenues are spent. “This is not a new subject,” MacQueen says. “I’ve been talking about this for 15 years.” MacQueen — along with his Innisfree partner Harlan Butler — operates the Hilton Gulf Front Hotel, Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Resort on the beach, along with multiple other properties outside the area. With each room he rents, the hotelier collects an additional four cents in bed taxes for Escambia County. Walking back inside, MacQueen passes through a large hall being prepped as one of the festival’s VIP areas. Not recognizing the CEO, a woman asks him to find someone to break down some cardboard boxes. “I’ll take care of it,” MacQueen says, smiling. The Holiday Inn at the beach is classy in a bikini-and-pina-colada kind of way. Flip-flop Zen at its finest. The kind of place Jimmy Buffett might like to hang out if he didn’t have his own hotel down the beach.

October 20, 2011

Tucked away off the lobby is the hotel’s restaurant, Riptides Sports Grill. Tucked away in the back of Riptides is a small meeting room. Tucked away in the meeting room are comfortable chairs around a table and glassy new Innerlight surfboards leaned against the wall. Once the room’s door closes, the smell of salt and sand seem a hundred miles away. The laughter from the bar has given way to a rather serious silence. MacQueen is one of the leading voices advocating for a restructuring in the way Escambia County’s tourism development tax is handled. He believes about half of it is misspent, and would like to see a private, industry-based, body manage the expenditures of the revenue generated from the tax. “It would be simplified,” MacQueen explains. “Right now, we’ve got too many people in the kitchen.” Currently, money generated by the tourism tax is handled by the county. It uses some of it to fund administrative costs, as well as supporting the Pensacola Civic Center, and passes the remainder along to the Tourism Development Council (TDC), which, in turn, gives the money to the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), which uses the funds to market the area. Taking up a pen, MacQueen draws several boxes and begins to label each, mapping out the current structure. There’s a box for the county commission connected by a bold line to another box for the TDC. There are also boxes for the Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and the CVB. The lines become dotted and convoluted, with arrows pointing both ways. “If you just hold these up at a distance,” MacQueen says, holding the sheet at arm’s length. “And just look at it and scratch your head and go, ‘really?’”

feature story

EXPLORING A BRAVE NEW WORLD

Members of the hotel industry, primarily those doing business on Pensacola Beach, have raised concerns before. They have taken to referring to themselves as the “stakeholders” and actively push for the reform of business as usual. “There’s some very direct and candid conversation that needs to be had,” said Dave Cleveland, a partner with Highpointe Hotel Corporation. Over the past few years, there have been concerns raised over the use of bed tax dollars to fund the civic center, as well as the amount set aside for administrative purposes. In short, some members of the hotel community believe the tax money could be put to more productive use by a private, industrybased body. “You throw this into the black hole of the government,” said MacQueen, “you get a very generalized idea of where the money goes.” If the stakeholders get their Christmas wish list fulfilled, the entirety of the tourism tax dollars will be funneled through the TDC to an independent body made up of commercial interests. “My definition,” MacQueen described his ideal scenario, “would be something that’s independent from the Chamber and the County.” Escambia County Commissioner Grover Robinson said he considers the question regarding the Board of County Commissioners’ use of funds for administrative purposes a “black-and-white issue” that could be ironed out by a definitive reading of the Florida statute governing the tax. He said he is against handing over the entire four cents, but is open to a broader conversation.

“There’s some very direct and candid conversation that needs to be had.” Dave Cleveland

“I want everything on the table,” Robinson said. “If we can do this better, shouldn’t we at least look at it?” The Commissioner wonders if the Pensacola Chamber, which houses the CVB, is the best body to handle the county’s tourism needs. He wonders if they absorb too much of the tax revenue for operational costs. “Our intent is not to support the overhead of the Chamber,” Robinson said. The Pensacola Chamber, which houses the CVB, has pretty much deferred to the county. Donnie McMahon, the Chamber’s chairman of the board, said it was “in their hands” but suggested conducting a study on the matter. “You need a third set of eyes looking at it,” he said. “I like that idea, having a third set of eyes.” TDC Chairman Denis McKinnon also see value in such an exercise. “Hopefully, they will want to do a study on it,” he said. MacQueen’s in no mood for more studies. “I don’t understand the study at all,” he said. “I think there are three or four ways of doing this and we need to pick one.”

MONEY IN, MONEY IN

Guess what? Marketing works. Ellis W. Bullock, III tapped excitedly on his computer keyboard. Above his desk hangs a star chart mapping the universe. As head of the marketing firm EW Bullock and Associates, he handles the tourism marketing needs of the county. Scrolling through comparisons between this year’s tourist season and the last, Bullock grew excited. He called out percentage figures. “I don’t know if we’ll ever see anything like it again,” Bullock said. The tourism community is pretty jazzed coming off a record season. “Everyone’s just talking, it’s been a super year during these bad economic times,” said Fred Simmons, owner of Paradise Inn. In addition to the regular tourism tax dollars, this year’s marketing budget was swollen with BP penance money. Following the 2010 oil spill and subsequent fears that tourists might not want to vacation along an environmentally-fouled gulf, the British oil giant pumped ogles of cash into coastal coffers. “There’s no question it’s the extra money,” Bullock said, explaining the record season.

Escambia’s tourism marketing budget was about triple what it normally is. It made a difference. TDC Chairman McKinnon agreed. “It was absolutely because of the BP dollars,” he said. “I don’t think you can look at it and say that the BP dollars didn’t have an impact on driving that.” However everyone seemed to agree that those high-rolling days may be over. Bullock said he believed we had seen the end of the BP marketing grants, while McKinnon called the funding “dried up.” Proponents of giving the entire four cents over to tourism marketing like to use the BP-funds-argument when discussing the possible shift in tax breakdown. They say the extra money–an additional 25 percent–would allow Escambia to better compete with surrounding counties that aren’t subsidizing civic centers and devote more dollars to straight-forward marketing. “We’re being outspent two to one on both sides of us,” MacQueen said. “It’s like putting a billboard in the forest.” Bullock said that if we didn’t step up our marketing game, we would find ourselves “sliding south.” “We have somehow competed with two million, but there’s only so long we can do that,” he said.

“Right now, you’re diluting it,” Commissioner Robinson told the IN. “The worst thing to do is to compete with yourself.” He pointed to a photograph on his office wall. His family smiled down from the snowcovered ski hills of Summit County, Colorado. The four ski resorts in that county advertise as a group. “Why don’t we advertise that way?” Robinson asked. The Pensacola Beach hoteliers agree. “You just can’t splinter the effort,” said Cleveland, whose company operates the Days Inn on the beach. “There’s definitely a value in a unified brand.” Next door at the Holiday Inn, MacQueen’s on the same page. “You cannot segment that money into separate pots,” he said. “If you did that your voice would be so muted.” But there are obvious concerns with this route. If the area is marketed under a central umbrella, it stands to reason that the bigmoney draw would get top billing. “We have different niche markets,” said Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce chair Allison Davenport. “You have to speak to your market. I don’t know how you can speak to your market when you have such a varied market.” Bullock recognizes Perdido Key’s concerns. He agrees that each nook of the county does have its own hooks for tourists. “It’s important to the people out in Perdido that they have their own brand out there,” he said. While he grants a nod to individuality, Bullock said at the end of the day everyone needs to suck up their pride and rally behind a unified front. “Pensacola’s the brand and that’s the brand we have to promote,” Bullock said. TDC Chairman Denis McKinnon said he has yet to decide on the best way to advertise the area. He suggested conducting a study on the matter. “I live up in Cantonment. I don’t have a dog in the fight,” McKinnon said. “It doesn’t matter to me.”

“We’re being outspent two to one on both sides of us. It’s like putting a billboard in the forest.” Julian MacQueen

UNITED, DIVIDED, UNDECIDED

When a tourist thinks of the beach, they think of the beach. They don’t think of that other beach near the beach, or, certainly not, northern Escambia County. “We should be advertising everyone together,” said Robinson. “I don’t care where you stay. I just want you to come to Escambia County.” A little over 10 years ago, the county commission diverted a portion of the bed tax to the Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce for that area to create its own brand identity and recently more funds have been given to other groups to fund targeted events. It seems like everyone wants a piece of the bed tax pie. Some would like to see the funds pulled back in and the entire county advertised under one brand.

OUT OF THE WOODS AND UP IN THE TREES

These issues have actually been explored for quite some time. A state investigation is currently ongoing into whether the discussion of such issues in a series of private meetings violated Sunshine laws. Simmons, owner of Paradise Inn, calls the allegations of behind-closed-doors meetings “hogwash.” “None of that was secret,” he said. “That was the biggest bunch of B.S. I’ve ever heard in my life.” Over the course of the past several months, it has become apparent through a series of emails that members of the tourismindustry community have been actively discussing the specifics of a possible restructuring for some time. The discussions took place between members of the business community, county commissioners and tourism officials. “I just don’t think the state attorney is going to find anything in regards to Sunshine violations,” Bullock said. “There’s never been any back-room deal.” In an effort to protect the public, it is illegal for any elected official to discuss privately with a fellow official a matter which would come before them. While members of the TDC are not elected, they are appointed by the county commission, so the rule extends to them. “I wouldn’t have done anything that knowingly would have created a Sunshine violation,” said McKinnon. The TDC chairman and members of the hotelier group–the “stakeholders”–met individually with county commissioners. Robinson, who is on both the TDC and the county commission, said he stayed away from those meetings to avoid possible Sunshine violations. “Denis McKinnon and his little group came by and talked to us about the structure of the TDC,” recalled Commissioner Marie Young. Nash Patel, the TDC’s vice chairman and also a hotelier, avoided the meetings, too. He apparently sent his brother in his stead. “Nash and Denis were extremely cautious and careful about the Sunshine Law,” said Bullock, adding that he didn’t feel the spirit or intent of the open-air law had been dodged. “There was nothing that this group was dealing with that was formal business before the TDC. I would never have looked at it as someone circumventing something.”

Bullock said he thought the back-andforth barbs and Sunshine accusations, along with the ensuing state investigation, had thrown the entire momentum of the conversation “out of whack.” “I hope we can get out of the woods and past who said what,” he said. “Let’s get above all this crap. Up in the trees again.”

A TAX IS A TAX IS MINE

MacQueen doesn’t seemed phased by the awkward swerve as of late. He calls it a “witch hunt.” In his Riptide boardroom, the Pensacola Beach hotelier referred to the recent hiccups, including the state Sunshine investigation and muscled resignation of a high-level Chamber tourism official, as a “distraction.” “It got interesting,” he noted as an aside. But MacQueen remains focused on the task at hand – securing tourism dollars and ensuring they wind up in the appropriate hands. In order to ensure that the best and brightest within the local tourism industry have a seat at the table, an independent body consisting of these leaders must be assembled. MacQueen is opposed to this new board being appointed by an elected body, such as the county commission — “no, absolutely not” — and doesn’t understand how it could be seen as any less accountable than the TDC. “Just as a counterpoint,” MacQueen argued. “How accountable is the appointee

made by [Escambia County Commission Chairman] Kevin White?” The hotelier said the new board would be accountable to other people in his industry. Those are the people, he pointed out, that bring in the bed tax dollars. “Maybe not to the residents,” he said, explaining who the group might answer to, “but anybody who has a commercial interest.”

“This isn’t even about the TDC. This is about the millions of dollars coming down the pipe from BP. That’s what they’re fighting about, that’s what all this wrangling is about.” George Hawthorne MacQueen said he thought the board should be transparent but had no thoughts on the body adhering to Sunshine laws. “Not having to deal with fully being in the Sunshine,” explained Bullock. “That’s a good thing sometimes, there’s some advantages to that.” McKinnon said he thought that because tax dollars were on the table, any

such body would be held accountable to Sunshine rules. “In my opinion,” he guessed, “and I’m not an attorney.” MacQueen’s reluctance to embrace the notion of operating in the full light of day could stem from his and his fellow stakeholders’ perception of the actual source of revenue in question. “They kind of see it as their tax,” Bullock had explained. The rough-sketch flow chart MacQueen had drawn earlier rested on the table in front of the hotel CEO. “Generators of this money should be a large benefactor of this money so it can generate even more money,” MacQueen explained. Opposite his chart mapping the existing structure, MacQueen had sketched out a chart representing his ideal setup. It features only two boxes– one for the county commission, the other for his independent body– with a broken line between them. “It’d be a dotted line, but it wouldn’t be a hard line,” he said, pointing to the sketch. “Once they receive it, we’re suggesting they just pass it along.” Commissioner Robinson believes the hotelier community offers an important voice, but acknowledged the county should stay involved. “It’s not their money,” he said. MacQueen sees it differently. The bed tax is generated by the tourism industry, therefore it should stay within that circle. “It’s not like a tax is a tax is a tax,” MacQueen said.

CONSPIRACY THEORIST

Among the cries of Sunshine violations, was a charge of a backroom “tourism coup.” George Hawthorne, president of the Gulf Coast African American Chamber of Commerce, accused McKinnon and the hoteliers of leading a secret effort to restructure tourism marketing. He complained all parties were not being given a voice in the discussion. “Let me bring it home,” Hawthorne laughed. “Let me tell you my theory. This isn’t even about the TDC. This is about the millions of dollars coming down the pipe from BP.” Calling the now ‘dried-up’ funds “peanuts,” Hawthorne said that the current argument over who gets control of tourism dollars is focused on a much bigger prize. “I know that’s it,” he said. “That’s what they’re fighting about, that’s what all this wrangling is about.” Depending on how the federal government chooses to frame BP’s oil spill-fine obligation, the company could end up paying between $5 and $21 billion dollars. A bill is making its way through Congress that would keep 80 percent of the fines in the Gulf region. Of that money, the spoils would be divvied up between counties and some of it will certainly be used for tourism marketing. “So, you’re looking at a sizable amount of money coming to Escambia,” Commissioner Robinson had noted. The county commission plans to hold discussions in November on the issue of tourism marketing, and its possible revamping. {in}

DeLuna Fest Day 1: Good Music Friday by Dan Fugate

Trombone Shorty / photo by Hana Frenette The second installment of DeLuna Fest is in the history books. Whether you're a fan of the lineup or not, there's no denying the bands who were booked sounded good live. And that's important. The main function of a music festival is to bring together a few big-name acts and as many less-mainstream bands as possible, hoping to sell tickets to people who want to hear live music. Every band I heard sounded good, even if I wasn't familiar with their music. One of the non-headliners I was most excited to see was Cold War Kids. The songs "Hang Me Up to Dry" and "Something is Not Right with Me" are playlist regulars, so I was hoping for at least one of them early in the set so I could leave and catch part of the

Matt & Kim / photo by Hana Frenette Dirty Dozen Brass Band's show. "Hang Me Up to Dry" was the fourth song in a powerful set. They sounded great. I moved on. I headed over to see the Dirty Dozen. I've seen these guys dozens (no pun) of times. Their horns and sparse use of lyrics never disappoint. Sure, I missed "Something is Not Right with Me," but how was I supposed to know they'd even play it. Besides, I can't be at a festival where DDBB are playing and not go hear a few trumpet tunes. The best act of the night, in my opinion, was Cake. Lead singer John McCrea's voice was spot on and his occasional banter with the crowd was fun and added intimacy. Also, I got a kick out of the pastoral backdrop they used. The juxtaposition of that field and

trees, the waves and white beach, and the metal and electricity were as ironic as the band's lyrics and bass/trumpet driven sound. I could have listened to these guys for two or three hours, but that wasn't to be. In the hour they were on they belted out eleven body-wigglin' songs covering their 20 year career, including: "Sheep Go to Heaven", "Frank Sinatra," "Never There," "Wheels," "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," their biggest hit "The Distance", and a smoldering cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Headlining Friday evening was Weezer. Scheduled to play until 11 p.m., I'm pretty sure I looked at my watch at the end of the show to see 10:36. That aside, they packed in 20

songs representing the blue, red, and green albums as well as Maladroit, Make Believe, Raditude, and Hurley. The band played something to make every Weezer fan happy. Among this fans’ favorites were: "Surf Wax America," "Undone (the Sweater Song)," "My Name is Jonas," "Island in the Sun," "Hash Pipe," "(if You're Wondering if I Want You to) I Want You to," "Only in Dreams," and "Buddy Holly." They even threw in a couple of covers: Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks," which I'd never heard before but really dug, and Radiohead's "Paranoid Android." {in}

HYPNOSIS. CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS, CHANGE YOUR

DeLuna Fest Day 2: Shins Saturday by Jessica Forbes

Big Boi / photo by Hana Frenette If anyone thought DeLuna Fest catered to a certain demographic, spending Saturday at the festival would have entirely disproved such a notion. DeLuna Fest’s diverse Saturday lineup gave music lovers of all ages plenty of reasons to put on more sunscreen and keep moving. Like all great festivals, the hardest part of the day was deciding when to walk away from one amazing act in order to catch a few songs of the next. Hometown crew Paloma kicked off the festivities on the gopensacola.com stage, while Tallahassee’s June in January helped promote the days’ acts during their solid performance across the grounds. Brooklyn–based songwriter Kevin Devine, the first Main Stage performer of the day, interspersed the poetic and thoughtful commentary of his songs with praise for the beach’s beauty. Devine was the first of many Saturday artists to express appreciation for Pensacola Beach, which became the biggest star of the festival. Nearby, Nicos Gun got festival goers bouncing with catchy dance-pop tunes like “Tangerine Express,” which could be a nickname for the huge orange Mohawk that singer Barney Cortez sported throughout the set, then threw off during the last song (it was a hairpiece!) much to the delight of the crowd, or this writer at least. On the other side of the festival, Still Corners gave a quieter, emo-based set, while Telekinesis dedicated the last of their dance-worthy rock songs to a crowd member waving a large, inflatable alien and bubble gun. Like the beach itself, one of the most memorable visuals of the festival were the original props seen in the crowd.

At the Jazz & singer James Mercer gave a warm shout out to the crew at Paddy O’Leary’s, where the Heritage stage, band had been mingling with locals the two saxophonist preceding nights. Antoine Knight Elsewhere during the mid-evening rivaled Friday hours, Papa Grows Funk showed the crowd performer why they are a New Orleans staple, with Trombone guitarist June Yamagashi jamming in his Shorty for the characteristically joyful and arresting style. longest circular JJ Grey and Mofro honored their Florida breathing moment of the fest blues-rock sound, playing favorites like “Lochloosa,” and expressing love for all things before playing natural in Florida, including, of course, an ultra smooth Pensacola’s very own beach. cover of Miles Headliner Jane’s Addiction, in true rockDavis’ “Tutu.” star fashion, began behind schedule. But Just around the the band made up for it with their amazingly corner, New powerful sound and engaging performance. York-based indie Between songs lead singer Perry Farrell rockers Robbers declared, “I love this place,” adding that on High Street playing on Pensacola Beach is “the best finished their set kept secret in America.” Coming from Lolof rich, British lapalooza’s founder, I’d consider that high invasion-inspired praise. tunes with a cover True to form, Saturday at DeLuna Fest of ELO’s “Evil Woman” that is sure to have ended with a spectrum of choices includanyone who saw that performance hunting ing Diplo’s raucous DJ set, lasers and beats down copies of both bands’ albums. galore with Ghostland Observatory, or a set Late afternoon began with Soul veteran Betty LaVette giving a goose bump-inducing of NOLA standards with Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers. LaVette’s powerful vocals and make up your mind, (and how could you, nods to the numerous artists she covered really?) a little bit of all three. {in} (including George Jones, Lucinda Williams, and Joe Simon) made her a personal favorite of the festival. Big Boi, as expected, brought the party to the beach, playing both solo and OutKast material, and getting the Main Stage crowd dancing both onstage and off. Even without singer Neko Case’s dynamic stage presence, The New Pornographers delivered a satisfying performance, with female vocalist and keyboardist Kathryn Calder doing an admirable job filling in for Case. Catching a few songs from rockers War on Drugs was enough to shake off any remaining No-Neko blues, and their rootsy, Americana quality served as a good prep for listening to the authentic bluegrass brought by the Infamous Stringdusters. For indie music fans, perhaps the most anticipated performance of the day was The Shins’ set, and the crew from Portland did not disappoint. The band played across their albums, including a song from an unThe New Pornographers/ photo by Hana Frenette named, forthcoming release. Lead

DeLuna Fest Day 3: Cut Copy, Nico Vega Highlight By James Hagan

While the cancellation of Lincoln Park’s headlining set put a damper on DeLuna Fest’s final day, the thousands in attendance Sunday were still treated to over two dozen bands from a wide variety of genres performing under perfect weather on Pensacola Beach. An early highlight was New York dreampop band Asobi Seksu performing songs off their latest release, “Fluorescence.” The duo played for an hour on the Grooveshark stage, which over the weekend featured some of the best performances at the festival by highlighting lesser-known, but critically-acclaimed performers like The Sounds, Stars, and Diplo, who performed in front of a modest, but rabid and sweaty audience Saturday night while Jane’s Addiction headlined on the Main Stage. Playing an always difficult early afternoon set under the sun, Asobi Seksu proved another highlight for the stage as they put on a spirited set that seemed to impress many concertgoers, who expressed interest in the band making a return engagement to the Gulf Coast. Like all festivals, while it is great seeing mainstream bands like Weezer and Cake, it is discovering previously unknown acts that make the festival experience so unique. Nico Vega was one such band. The Los Angeles band, and “Last Call with Carson Daly” favorite, played their first show in Pensacola on the Groovseshark and thrilled the crowd with a high-energy rock show, punctuated by the soaring vocals, and dynamic live per-

• SHINCOUNTERS: One thing is for sure, The Shins sure showed festival-goers and beach-bar hoppers at Paddy O' Leary's plenty of love this weekend and may have even played a few songs, so the story goes. • SAND DUNE STAMPEDE : Although a moment of chaos, the mental picture of Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo parading through the sea oats amidst a crowd of fist pumping fans is one that will probably never fade. • AFTER HOURS: Whether you were

throwing down at Paloma, kicking it with Girl Talk or dancing all night with Grooveshark, if you stayed out late enough chances are you just might have stumbled from an official after party to a full fledged

Frequently compared by critics to such rock goddesses as Karon O from the “Yeah Yeah Yeahs,” and Janis Joplin, Volkman demonstrated star presence that wowed the hundred-plus people watching the set, who may have been unfamiliar with the band’s discography. “The best part of Sunday was discovering new, really good bands that I’ve never listened to before like Nico Vega and Colour Revolt,” said Chelsea Powell, who attended all three days. “Nico Vega was a great discovery,” echoed Ryan Steward, who said that the only reason he had planned to attend the festival Sunday was to see that evening’s Cut Copy performance.

impromptu house party that just iced the cake on your evening.

• BOTTLES & SHADES: Shout out to Grooveshark for hooking it up all weekend. Not only are the water bottles festive, they were perfect for water or alcohol. • HOMETOWN VIP: Pensacolians rep-

resented in the VIP tent Saturday Night. Enough said.

• NIGHT LIGHTS: Ghostland’s light show was so intense that it allegedly warranted military clearance. I believe it. Either way, it was badass. • BUCKET PUNCH: Thanks to the onsite bars that offered DeLuna Punch. This sweet bang for your buck kept us going strong all weekend. Although, the bucket was a workout to carry. • WHO DAT PARTY: If you were won-

dering why Kermit Ruffins was late to his Sunday evening set, we know the answer: football. Kermit and his Barbecue Swingers

Of course, music is just part of the overall festival atmosphere. Festival goers were able to enjoy the beach, and take a look at some wares from local artists. One unique attraction was the Ultimate Fighting Championship van, which allowed people a respite from the heat and the chance to peruse memorabilia, play the UFC video game, and do their best Cain Velasquezimpression while posing with a replica UFC Heavyweight Championship belt. Without Linkin Park, Cut Copy and Mute Math served as Sunday’s default headliners. While not having the radio hits of Linkin Park, or the cultural recognition, both indie-darlings proved more than up to the task. While these bands may not have

proved the draw hoped for by the festival organizers, their performances were certainly superstar-worthy. Under a perfect sunset, on the flawless white sand adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico, the thousands of enthusiastic, exhausted revelers still in attendance danced and sang their hearts out through the two performances, ending the festival on a definite high note, and leaving attendees expressing hope that Deluna Fest will survive its challenging second year and return next year for a third go-round. “Cut Copy put on an amazing show,” said Brittney Goodman. “Listening to such an amazing band with my toes in the sand on a beautiful beach – what else could I ask for?” Attendees praised the event overall, but expressed frustration with some of the disorganization of the event, including under promoting changes in performance times. They also offered suggestions for next year’s event. “It was a fine, fresh, fierce event,” said Alex Steward, “let’s just get everyone a little more organized next time.” “It’s only year two and Pensacola has never hosted anything like this before,” said Shelsie Lawrence. “It takes a few times to get all the bugs worked out.” The eclectic line-up also drew kudos. “I felt like this year there was a little bit of everything: dance, hip hop, rock, indie etcetera,” said Powell. “It was a great festival and I felt so happy and luck to have such a wonderful thing happen on my hometown beach.” {in}

Get Your Ghoul On The Fish House Deck Bar will become wild and witchy on Wednesday night before Halloween weekend. They will transform it into the location of one ghoulish Girls’ Night Out, renamed Ghouls’ Night Out. The Fish House is kicking off the Halloween weekend with a costume contest, fun giveaways, drink specials, a DJ, live music by Rumor Mill and photos taken in the Best Damn PhotoBooth. “We want to kick off the Halloween weekend, and build on an already successful Girls’ Night Out here at the Fish House,” said Shelly Yates, director of marketing and public relations for Great Southern Restaurant Group. The costume contest will have two big prizes: the grand prize is $1,000, and second prize for the crowd favorite is $500. The contest will be run and emceed by DJ Tony C. Participants will register with the DJ until 10 p.m. In three separate rounds, the crowd and the judge will decide who moves through to the final round. The contest will be decided at midnight. Drink specials for the night will include a unique punch made with the new bold, smoky and smooth Bacardi Oakheart and spiced rum. Drink specials are only $2 for the ladies, 21 years of age and older. They have a souvenir glass for $8. In addition, they will offer a nonalcoholic fruit punch for $3.50.

Pensacola-based party band Rumor Mill starts at 9 p.m. Rumor Mill plays everything from funk to rap, rock, pop and heavy modern rock. Lead vocalist Vega leads the band with powerful vocals, great stage presence and always gives the crowd what they came looking for. Guitarist Ricky Fortag and bassist Jerry Vinci create a great one-two punch that always makes sure the crowd is highly entertained. Drummer Mikey Rhatigan holds down a diverse and versatile rhythm section, which drives the band and motivates the crowd to stay on their feet until the very last song. The Fish House Deck Bar is one of the hottest places to be on a normal Wednes-

day night. Girls’ Night Out on the deck is one of the area’s most popular parties, and it is open to all ages. Ladies who are old enough to drink enjoy $2 drinks all night long, and the evening features a variety of live and recorded music. Adding to the fun of the evening, the Fish House has solicited the services of the Best Damn PhotoBooth. This new business is the brainchild of photographer David P. Reardon, prop master and videographer Jarred Taylor and makeup/set director John Dye.

“It started during a birthday party for Dave,” said Taylor. “We had the white background, the lighting, the camera, and the props and decided to take some ridiculous pictures. We had a blast and realized that anyone who got together with friends would like to have the same thing to remember the event.” Taylor goes on to say, “We have only had a couple of events so far, but Wednesday night is the official debut of how the photo booth works. We bring the thrill of a professional fashion shoot, add the excitement of a Hollywood red-carpet event and bring it to your doorstep. It is a great way to liven up an event and everyone enjoys the photos.” The night of Ghouls’ Night Out, The Best Damn PhotoBooth is complimentary for costumed guests, 21 years of age or older. Following the event, the images will be placed on the Fish House Facebook photo gallery. {in}

The house is haunted. That’s true. “This paranormal medium was walking around downtown, and she told us she felt summoned by the building,” Linda Paul said. “She walked in and heard children playing upstairs and once she actually got up there she said the sounds turned into crying noises.” There is actually an old children’s piano in one of the upstairs rooms, but all the keys are broken. “But anyway, we aren’t looking for ghosts, our goal is just to entertain,” Paul said. “We are high-scare, lowgore, with about $20,000 invested in special effects.” Paul and her husband Russell are the producer’s for Seville’s haunted house, Fear City Nights. The haunted house will be held in a vacant building directly across the street from Seville’s Rosie O’Grady’s. The site has a total of 10,000 square feet, half inside and half outside. There are more than 13 rooms inside, and four “scare areas” outside. “We have dead-rooms instead of bedrooms, and a dying room instead of a dining room,” Paul said. Since the end of August, a group of volunteers — ranging from 25 to 50 of them — have been working in the space. They’ve been building fake walls and arranging the décor, but Paul actually works on the props all year long. “As soon as one season is over, we get right back to designing for next year,” Paul said. Fear City Nights opened Sept. 30 and will run every Friday and Saturday up until Halloween weekend, when it will run Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Halloween Monday. “The ticket booth opens at 6:30, but we don’t start the screaming until about 7:30,” Paul said. Tickets at the gate are $15, but if you bring three canned-good items, the price will be lowered to $13.

“Some people will be mad the room didn’t have a clown in it, while others are just glad they almost wet their pants.” Linda Paul

Fear City Nights is also offering a child-matinee viewing of the house from 3 to 5 p.m. The ticket price is $7 and will include a full walk-through of the house. However, more lights will be on and all the monsters and dead people will be “asleep.” They are still visible, just not interactive. “You’re paying us to scare you, but we don’t want to traumatize your children,” Paul said. “We don’t have an age limit on the regular show either, though, it’s just kind of a use-your-own-discretion thing.’” The show will be running from now through Halloween night, and tickets may be purchased at the gate or online. It’s usually more fun to wait at the gate though, that way you can hear the screams and know you’re getting your money’s worth. {in}

“We are trying to help Manna build their food bank back up, because it is at a dangerously low level,” Paul said. “Last year we helped raise over 1,000 pounds of canned goods for them.” Fear City Nights is also offering people the chance to vote for their favorite room. Each room is created by a certain sponsor or volunteer, and at the end of the night, each room will receive a percentage of the ticket sales based on how many times it was voted for. “It makes it into a little incentive sometimes for the volunteers, to make their room as scary as possible,” Paul said. “It’s chosen by people who had the chance to walk through it themselves, not a panel of judges or something.” WHAT: Haunted House People can write down suggesWHERE: Historic Seville Quarter, directly tions or reasons why they liked or across from Rosie O’ Grady’s didn’t like a room, which everyone WHEN: Oct. 21, 22, 28, 29, 30, and Hallowtries to take into consideration for een night. the next year. COLD WEATHER FAVORITES Hear that? It’s the sound of women throughout town unpacking forgotten sweaters from the tops of closets and of men silently rejoicing that their business suits will no longer be drenched after a brisk walk from the car to the office. Fall has arrived! For me, it’s that magical time when my stove is no longer seen as an evil heatproducing monster (making my summertime kitchen hotter), but a valued friend. It’s the time I remember I have an oven, and suddenly think, ‘yes, I love casseroles!’ The season of fall-food favorites is back. So fire up those forgotten burners, because while sweaters may cozy up to your body, comfort foods hug your soul.

Pumpkin Soup

Don’t make the mistake of choosing the ubiquitous field pumpkin to cook with – leave that one for the Jack-O-Lanterns. The ones you want are called sugar pumpkins, or

cheese pumpkins. Their dense, sweet flesh makes them perfect for cooking or baking! And pumpkins keep well. In the fridge (uncut) they last for three months. Cut up, they’ll last for fi ve days. But no worries, you won’t have any problem using them up with this recipes. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons butter 1 onion, diced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 1 apple, peeled and diced 2 cups fresh pumpkin, roasted and diced 1 tablespoon sage leaves 3 cups chicken stock 1 cup cream salt and pepper to taste Directions: Cut pumpkin in half and discard the seeds and stringy fibers. Then cut pumpkin into quarters and place on baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and toss with salt and

pepper. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 to 40 minutes, or until tender. Allow to cool and peel away skin. Later: In a stockpot over medium heat, melt butter and saute onion, carrot, apple, roasted pumpkin, and sage until all are tender, about eight to 10 minutes. Puree in a food processor. Return the puree to the stockpot, add chicken stock and simmer for 15 minutes. Then add the cream and simmer for fi ve more minutes. Do not boil. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Chicken Pot Pie

Remember that thing below your stove? Yeah, the one you used this summer to heat up that piece of pizza. Well make your oven feel loved again with this fantastically easy chicken pot pie. The perfect way to use up leftover turkey or rotisserie chicken — this is great for the day or two after a holiday party, when all the guests have left, but somehow the food hasn’t.

Ingredients: 2 cups cooked, chopped chicken 1 1/2 cups of your favorite frozen veggie mix (I like the carrot, green bean, pea mixture, myself) 1/4 cup butter or margarine 1/4 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup flour 1 1/2 cups chicken broth 1/2 cup milk 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 frozen double pie crust (no judgement) Directions: Combine chicken breast and veggie mix; set aside. In medium saucepan, melt butter. Sauté onion until clear. Whisk in flour and cook until bubbly and slightly brown. Then whisk in broth and milk. Do not stop whisking, for fear of clumps. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until thickened. Stir in seasonings. Pour over chicken-vegetable mixture and stir to combine. Line a pie plate with bottom crust. Pour in filling. Top with second pie crust, leaving a vent. Brush crust with milk or egg and bake at 450 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes, then turn oven down to 375. Bake until crust is brown and the filling is bubbly, or about 50 minutes more.

Crock-Pot Grits with Andouille and Shrimp

My mother used to make these for us on Sundays. Cheesy grits with andouille sausage

and shrimp — a southern cold-weather specialty for sure. Bust out your crock-pot and let it do all the work for you, while you get an early start on Sunday-Funday. Ingredients: 2 cups Jim Dandy Quick Cooking Grits 6 cups hot water 2 cups milk 1 teaspoon Tony Chachere’s (or any cajun) seasoning 1/2 pound chopped sausage links cooked and drained of oil (we use Conecuh Sausage) 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese 1 onion chopped and cooked until translucent 1 pound of peeled shrimp rinsed well cheddar cheese for garnish Directions: Add first seven ingredients in crock pot and stir well. Cook on high four hours (temperatures vary on some pots so check after two hours and turn to low if needed). Add shrimp 30 minutes before serving (they’ll cook in the grits). Top each serving with additional cheddar cheese.

Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie

No evening of comfort is complete without dessert. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a new take on an old classic. Ingredients: 1 (nine-inch) pie shell 1 cup white sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1/2 cup butter

Don’t worry, we didn’t forget about Halloween. Simply serve guacamole and call it “guaca-moldy” and put some twizzlers — I mean “guts” — in some cupcakes at your party and you’re golden. But one thing that can never be absent from any Halloween festivity is the Bloody Mary. And the gag is already taken care of for you!

Bloody Mary

Ingredients: 2 ounces vodka 3 ounces of your favorite Bloody Mary mix (I like Zing Zang) dash of Worcestershire sauce dash of hot sauce pinch of salt and pepper fresh grated garlic and horseradish (if you please) Directions: Combine all ingredients in a glass over ice. Stir well to combine (or shake). Garnish with celery, pickled green beans, olives and lemon wedge. If it looks like a salad, you’re done!

4 eggs, beaten 1/4 cup bourbon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 6 ounces semisweet chocolate chips 1 cup chopped pecans Directions: Combine sugar, corn syrup, and butter or margarine in a small saucepan. Cook over

medium heat, stirring constantly, until butter melts and sugar dissolves. Allow to cool slightly. In another bowl combine eggs, bourbon, vanilla, and salt. Slowly pour sugar mixture into egg mixture, whisking constantly. Stir in chocolate chips and pecans. Pour mixture into pie shell. Bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 50 to 55 minutes, or until set and golden. {in}

news of the weird LONDON FASHION WEEK usually brings forth a shock or two from cutting-edge designers, but a September creation by Rachel Freire might have raised the bar: a floor-length dress made from 3,000 cow nipples (designed to resemble roses). Initial disgust for the garment centered on implied animal abuse, but Freire deflected that issue by pointing out that the nipples had been discarded by a tannery and that her use amounted to “recycling.” The 32-year-old Freire, who has worked with mainstream entertainers such as Christina Aguilera, was kept so busy with the animal-abuse angle that she was largely spared having to explain another issue -- why anyone would want to wear a dress made with cow nipples. THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT! Death is big business in Japan, with 1.2 million people a year passing away and overtaxing the country’s cemeteries and crematoriums. With the average wait for disposal at least several days, and space running short in funeral homes, “corpse hotels” have opened in many cities, with climate-controlled “guest rooms” renting for the equivalent of about $155 a night, with viewing rooms where relatives can visit the bodies daily until cremation is available. • The world’s real economy may be flagging, but not necessarily the make-believe economy of online multiplayer games, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal (July) and the website Singularity Hub (August). For example, entrepreneur Ailin Graef’s Anshe Chung Studios is worth “millions” of real U.S. dollars, earned mostly by managing rentals of make-believe real estate and brokering make-believe money transactions in the game Second Life. Graef also commands top (real) dollar for her designs of make-believe fashions for players’ game characters (avatars). Two other companies are suing each other in federal court in San Francisco over the copyright to their lucrative business models of creating make-believe animals (horses, rabbits) that sell very well to players who take them on as game pets for their characters or breed them to make other make-believe animals. • No sooner had Anthony Sowell been convicted in August of murdering 11 women in Cleveland and burying their remains around his property than entrepreneur Eric Gein of Florida had hired someone to fill sandwich bags of soil from Sowell’s property so that he could sell the souvenir dirt for $25 a gram on the Internet. (Gein follows wellpublicized salesmen who have famously collected the pubic hair of New York prostitutekiller Arthur Shawcross, the crawlspace dirt from the house of John Wayne Gacy, and the “fried hair” of Ted Bundy—that fell on the floor as he was executed.)

WEIRD SCIENCE In July, a surgeon from Britain’s Oxford Radcliffe Hospital announced a cure for a 57-year-old man with a rare condition that made, in his mind, audible and ever-louder sounds whenever his eyeballs moved. “Superior canal dehiscence syndrome” elevates the interior sounds of the body (such as heartbeat and the “friction” of muscles moving against muscles) to disturbing levels. • Artificial meat (grown in a test tube from animal stem cells) has been theoretically planned for about 10 years, but a European Science Foundation audience in September heard predictions that lab-grown sausage might be available as soon as next year. The meat is produced in sheets (“shmeat”) and would be prohibitively expensive at first, in that the largest specimen produced so far measures only about one inch long and a third of an inch wide. The biggest drawback facing artificial muscle tissue: that even lab-grown muscles require exercise to prevent atrophy. LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Turned down once before, liquor manufacturer EFAG convinced Germany’s Federal Patent Court in September to award trademark protection to its schnapps with the brand name Ficken, which in German translates directly into what in English is known as the F word. The court acknowledged that the name is unquestionably in poor taste but is not “sexually discriminatory” and does not violate public morals. In fact, the court noted, the word is widely used in Germany. (In March 2010, the European Union trademarks authority granted a German brewery the right to call its beer “Fucking Hell”—the first word of which is the actual name of an Austrian village and the second a German word referring to light ale.) LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS One would think the robber of a gas station would consider filling the tank before fleeing. However, Moses Gift, 47, was arrested in September in Winston-Salem, N.C., and charged with robbing the Huff Shell station—shortly before running out of gas a short distance away. And in Winder, Ga., Micah Mitchell was arrested in October shortly after, according to police, he crashed through the front door of a BP station to steal merchandise. He was arrested minutes later a few miles from the station, where he had run out of gas.

my pensacola David Stafford Day Job: Escambia County Super visor of

Elections

Pensacola Resident Since: 1970, with a

few stints out of town

Much of My Pensacola happens to revolve around Palafox Street and its vicinity. It’s where I work, eat and sometimes play. It’s also where my wife works and my boys attend school – Episcopal Day School — and where we worship, Christ Episcopal Church.

Good Eats:

I love food. During the week, my co-workers and I will usually hit one of our downtown favorites. Jimmy Holler’s Dog House Deli is second to none – Chicago dog, hold the onions. A few doors down, the Mahi tacos at Nacho Daddies are unbelievable, as are the pita pizzas at Hopjacks. The soup and salad bar at Seville Quarter and Jamaican wrap from Ever’man are always good, quick options. For dinner we love the Fish House. Collier, J.P. and their crew always make us feel welcome, especially when we bring friends and family from outside the area. McGuire’s is another local institution that lives up to its billing. Nathan’s Special is more than a sandwich. Halfprice Mondays at Ozone are great for two hungry boys who love their pizza. The black bean quesadillas and Mexican salad are our standard take-out fare from Cactus Flower.

Nightlife:

As a fledgling, wanna-be musician, I enjoy live music. While I don’t get out to too many shows, I manage to catch a few here and there. Vinyl has brought in an impressive and diverse array of talent in their first year. It’s an impressive venue. The Fish House Deck is a great place to see a band, and Seville Quarter always has something going on.

The National Naval Aviation Museum is a world-class attraction, and it’s still free. It’s perfect on an exceptionally hot or rainy day — especially the IMAX and simulators — and a must see for out-of-town visitors. And we can’t wait for the National Flight Academy to open its doors to area students. Fort Barrancas is yet another favorite destination onboard NAS Pensacola, as is the A.C. Read golf course. We try not to take Pensacola Beach for granted and, in fact, enjoyed the boys’ last spring break there. We like taking our bikes into Fort Pickens, exploring the trails and forts, and then hopping in the gulf at Langdon Beach.

Never Miss Events/Festivals:

We never miss the Blue Angels Air Show at Pensacola Beach. With a father and two brothers as Naval officers, I have a deep appreciation for our men and women in uniform. Nothing compares to watching the F/A-18 Hornets perform their magic with Pensacola Beach as the backdrop. The homecoming show onboard NAS is another must-see event. We are so fortunate to be the Cradle of Naval Aviation, and the place that the Blues call home. Gallery Night has helped the resurgence of downtown, as has the Pelican Drop on New Year’s Eve. Evenings in Seville Square offers great music in an incomparable setting. The Fiesta of Five Flags celebration each year gives the community a chance to celebrate its heritage and have some fun along the way. And I look forward to the Blue Wahoos at the new Maritime Park stadium next year.

The Wisteria is a good place to meet up with friends. It has quite a history there on that treelined stretch of 12th Avenue. And the aforementioned Hopjacks and Ozone have wide selections of pints to wash down their pizza.
