The Contenders I N 's P redictions For Next Year's Big Winners BY IN STAFF
Vinyl Music Hall 2 S. Palafox Music fans in Pensaocla have been dreaming of a mid-sized venue pretty much forever and Vinyl Music Hall has finally made that dream a reality. They've only been open a few months and they've already played host to some pretty big names like Nappy Roots and the legendary Dr. John, just to name a few. We anticipate it's just going to keep better and better. IN's Prediction: Best Live Music Venue
very year, without fail, there always a few new business and restaurants that totally miss the Best of the Coast boat. They either open right before, during or after the voting period, so people just aren't really familiar enough with them yet to vote for them. This year the crop of new business that fall into that category are all pretty great. And while we can't predict the future, we feel pretty confident in saying that places like The Leisure Club, Play and Vinyl are all going to be contenders next year for some serious "Best Of " wins. So current winners consider yourselves warned—you've got some new competition coming your way.
E
The Leisure Club 126 S. Palafox Palafox Street has been in dire need of place like TLC for a long, long time. Play It's not even open yet, but the buzz surrounding Pensacola's first "barcade" Play is already huge. All we know so far is that's going be located on Palafox Street and according to their website it will have "20 rotating microbrews, a combination of vintage and state of the art arcade games, pool tables and skee-ball machines." That's more than enough to get us excited for the upcoming grand opening. IN's Predictions: Best Bar for Bar Games, Best Bar Where It Pays to be a Regular

Palafox St., 432-5226, jacosbayfrontbarandgrille.com With an unbelievable view of the bay and Palafox Marina, brand-new digs, a distinguished chef, and a promising menu that includes flatbread, pizzas, salads and small plates, we think Jaco’s is poised to do some major BOC damage in 2011 and beyond. FLYERS BACK ON THE ICE HIGH HOPE S AS HOCKEY SEASON BEGINS
BY SCOTT HUHN
ensacola’s hockey fans are letting out a collective sigh of relief, for the wait is over. The skating, the shoving, the icing, and the fouling will begin anew, as the Pensacola Ice Flyers’ 20102011 season kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Pensacola Civic Center—also known to hockey fans as the Hangar—and the anticipation couldn’t be higher. The preparation for takeoff in the Ice Flyers’ second season as an organization has been much smoother than last year. The previous incarnation of hockey in Pensacola ended badly. When the owners of the Pensacola Ice Pilots allowed the team to dissolve in 2008, it was after three dismal seasons. Relationships between the team, the fans, the Civic Center, and with Escambia County had soured. And even as that team’s owner was making his exit proclaiming that hockey couldn’t work in Pensacola, the atmosphere of disappointment in the demise of the team made it hard to deny that Pensacola had a fan base for hockey, and a loyal one at that. This loyalty was recognized by Tim Kerr. Kerr played right wing for the Philadelphia Flyers, is a member of that team’s hall of fame, and is the holder of the NHL record for most power play goals in a single season. Since his retirement from the sport, Kerr went on to own a successful New Jersey-based real estate business. A familiar name to hockey fans in Pensacola, Kerr owned the Ice Pilots, selling them after two strong seasons because of financial hardship faced by the community after Hurricane Ivan. But Kerr knew hockey could work in Pensacola, and learning lessons from his last ownership stint, he felt he knew the right approach that would win over the town’s hockey detractors in order to make a new team a success in moving forward. “Anytime a team leaves and then comes back, there’s going to be animos-
P
ity,” says Aaron Epstein, the Ice Flyers’ director of marketing, business development and game presentation. “We disappointed (the community) by leaving. This time we wanted to have a community feeling.” And with that attitude, Kerr put together an organization of people—a majority of whom had never worked in Pensacola hockey before. The result was a success both on and off the ice. In their premiere season, the Pensacola Ice Flyers made it to the playoffs, losing in the first round to the Huntsville Havoc, the eventual winners of the season’s Southern Professional Hockey League Championship prize: the President’s Cup. ▶cont’d on page 58

MORE THAN JUST A DANCE TEAM

T
hirteen may just be the lucky number for the Pensacola Ice Flyers this season. The Ice Flyers have announced the addition of a dance team, appropriately known as The Flight Attendants, who will perform at all 28 home games and assist in promoting the team in the community. The 13 dancers are currently practicing hard for the upcoming season and are poised to become a valuable addition to the team culture. Aaron Epstein, director of marketing and business development and game presentation for the hockey team, contacted captain Jessica Jensen with the idea of organizing and leading the charter dance team for the Ice Flyers.
“We wanted an opportunity to engage fans, old and new, in the promotions and events happening at the games and provide them with classic, fun entertainment for the whole family,” Epstein said. Auditions were held in September and Jensen had high expectations for the future Flight Attendants. “I wanted to build a team of women who understood the value of philanthropy and community service while demonstrating the qualities necessary to be a role model,” she explained. The team will be led by one of Pensacola’s rising young stars. Jensen began her professional dance career
at the age of 12 with the Alabama Ballet, and continued her training in New York City with the Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theatre summer intensives. Jensen is also actively involved with local theatre, and this diverse performance background is sure to translate into entertaining and top-notch performances on the ice. In addition to entertaining the masses during the Ice Flyers’ games, the team members are expected to be involved with several community groups and organizations. They will make public appearances to promote the Ice Flyers and will participate in community service. The team will focus the majority of their volunteer efforts toward helping with fundraising endeavors for Manna Food Pantries, a local non-profit that seeks to alleviate hunger in our community through the redistribution of canned food and community gardens. Jensen is looking forward to a great season with the team. “We have selected a top-notch group that can dance and match wits with the best,” she added. The 2010-2011 squad consists of: Michelle Carter, Lisa Aguado, Michelle Belanger, Chelsea Owens, Lilia Oakey, Stacey Williams, Vicki Coward, Shainna Shortt, Christina Genualdi, Heather Smith, Amy Worster, Elizabeth Mills and captain, Jessica Jensen. info@inweekly.net

FLYERS BACK ON THE ICE But another victory came in the team’s impressive game attendance numbers. An average of 3,457 fans attended each game, making the Ice Flyers the third highest in the league for game attendance. One late-season game saw 7,189 fans pack the Hangar—a record in the Civic Center. Community-centered attitude and fan-friendly approachability are values that pervade the team’s organization “from the owner Tim Kerr, all the way to the interns,” Epstein says. Allowing fans to forge a connection with the players over numerous seasons was another goal set for the Ice Flyers, and a luxury not afforded by the Ice Pilots— members of the higher ECHL league—as players were frequently moved from team to team, and drafted to higher leagues, leaving the team with a high player turnover rate. “The idea of having players and fans get to know each other is a good thing,” says Todd Gordon, now starting his second season as the Ice Flyers’ head coach. “This season we have eight players coming back.” The returning players, says Gordon, come with the on-ice advantage of familiarity with each other and with him, their coach. With the team possessing this
cont’ d from page 57
cohesion from the start, Gordon says fans should expect to see “a fast, high-energy, exciting team. The fans can look forward to a lot of wins with that.” The Ice Flyers will play a 56-game schedule this season—28 away, and 28 at home—and will see a new team of rivals in the Augusta Riverhawks, the latest to join the now eight-team SPHL. Coach Gordon says this season has been “a lot smoother” from an organizational and recruitment standpoint compared to last year’s late start. This further encourages the coach and gives him confidence as he looks to the upcoming season. “We’re going to pick up where we left off,” he says. But Gordon and Kerr have repeatedly made it known that what happens on the ice is only a part of a fan’s experience when they spend an evening at an Ice Flyers game. Each game night is designed as an event that keeps fans entertained from the start. To become the leader of the entertainment on game nights in the Hangar, Aaron Epstein dons his hockey jersey and becomes “the man in the stands”: the “Big Show.” “For the fans there to see the game, I’m more of a host, keeping things moving during the slow parts,” explains Epstein. “For the fans more interested in the enter-

tainment aspects, I’m like an emcee.” Included in regular games are giveaways, trivia questions, and dance contests. Always a fan favorite, the team’s mascot, Maverick, is on the ice and in the stands interacting with fans. This season, too, will see the debut of a dance squad, the Pensacola Flight Attendants, who will perform at home games. Special entertainment planned for game nights this season includes wiener dog races, baby races, and an Oct. 30 Halloween costume contest. And judging by the fun of last season, there should be a steady supply of on-ice games and challenges to keep fans’ energy high during game play, and during intermissions. And further bolstering their commitment to the community, the upcoming season will give us special nights including Boy Scout Night; “Guns and Hoses,” a first responders appreciation night; and for the season-opening game, “Pink in the Rink Night,” where team members will wear specially-designed jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game, with proceeds going to the Pensacola Breast Cancer Association. Individual game tickets range in price from $11 to $25 and can be purchased at the Civic Center box office, at all Tick-
etmaster outlets, online at ticketmaster. com, or by calling 800-745-3000. For more information and to stay up-to-date on the events and details of the season as it unfolds, visit the team’s website at pensacolaicef lyers.com. Aaron Epstein and Todd Gordon each give a guarantee for the upcoming season. Epstein promises “major league entertainment at a minor league price,” and Gordon tells us to expect “a lot of wins.” With these vows, fans have plenty to look forward to when the puck drops on Oct. 23. info@inweekly.net

fter 21 years, you probably know that WSRE’s annual Food and Wine Classic is just around the corner. Hopefully you got your tickets, because the Sunday, Oct. 24 event is sold out. However, you still have a chance to be wined and dined at the Preview Tasting Party, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22. The Food and Wine Classic, which is now WSRE’s main fundraising event, began with humble beginnings. “The first Food and Wine Classic was before my time,” said Janie Stewart, manager of business partnership and special events. “I know that it started very small. It was truly just wine and cheese with only a few sponsors. Over the years, it has grown and evolved into our signature event.” All proceeds for the event go towards the mission of WSRE and PBS for the Gulf Coast. “Our mission is to inspire everyone from every walk of life to explore new ideas, discover new worlds and broaden horizons,” said managing director, Robin McArthur. “Proceeds go toward our general fund which is budgeted out to local programming, funding PBS and educational services.” Supporting WSRE is important because it is the voice of the community. “WSRE provides an unbiased voice,” McArthur said. “We provide

both sides of the story and a voice for the public, by the public. We’re not owned by a huge media conglomerate; our message isn’t controlled by our owner.” As for the food, local culinary talents such as Chef David Cunningham of Commander’s Palace, Chef Irv Miller of Jackson’s Steakhouse, Chef Gregg McCarthy of The Grand Marlin and Chef David Penniman of Classic City Catering will be preparing a five course meal for Sunday’s event. “We leave the menu up to the chefs,” Stewart said. “They have great ideas and come up with a delicious menu.” Stewart, with the help of a panel of volunteers, is in charge of finding chefs for the Friday and Sunday events. Surprisingly, it isn’t hard to find generous chefs to donate their time and talent. “The chefs usually call us,” Stewart said. “I also try to bring in chefs that are loyal to the event and any new chefs in the area.” “We like to recognize new talent,” McArthur explained. “If there is a chef out there who wants to participate, we’d love to hear from them.”
Friday’s Preview Tasting Party will feature Chef Jay Ammons of Will Call Sports Grille, Chef Mark Murphy of Flounder’s Chowder House, Chef Jim Shirley of The Fish House, Chef Tony Wall of New World Landing and Chef Dan Dunn of H20 Grill, who will also be at Sunday’s event. At the Preview Tasting Party, you can enjoy live entertainment from Al Martin and Sandra Daggs. While you sample hors d’oeuvres and fine wines, you can bid on silent auction items. The ticket price for the Preview Tasting Party is $50. The Food and Wine Classic has become a part of the Pensacola community, and whether you’re sitting down for a fancy five course meal or mingling and eating with your hands, you’re supporting WSRE and participating within the community, which is an unwritten mission of WSRE. “The event has taken a life of its own,” Stewart added. “It has been a wonderful fundraiser for the station. I like to call it a ‘friendraiser.’ It’s a great way to meet new people and get involved with WSRE.” info@inweekly.net

451 YEARS IN THE MAKING PENSACOLA’S FIRST PROPER BEACH FESTIVAL DEBUTS BY WILL STRICKLAND

F
or those of us who thought that Pensacola is where motivation goes to die, it was a surprise to hear that DeLuna Fest would be taking place on Pensacola Beach. At a time when what little remains of the once respectable music scene are a few hobbyists tinkering with their toys, a new festival was way past due. However, the organizers didn’t waste any time or try to go even remotely grassroots. It was a very bold decision to start out on such a large scale, and this sort of ambitiousness is exactly what Pensacola needs more of and is an endeavor worthy of the utmost respect. As with all festivals, the first year should be expected to have some hiccups, and the DeLuna Fest staff did a great job of keeping problems to a minimum. “I made the drive over from Mobile and I have been pleasantly surprised with the set up...and it has been great to see how reasonably priced the food, drinks, and merchandise have been,” said Brent Jarreau, a festival patron.
On Friday, there were crowds lining up before the gates even opened. Once inside, it took a little effort to get your bearings, convert your currency, and find a good spot. After jumping through a few hoops, you couldn’t help but take a step back and be thankful for the fact that entrepreneurs are finally making use of Pensacola’s greatest asset. The first bands mirrored the enthusiasm of an eager crowd and highlights started to stack up. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros provided one of the most engaging performances of the whole weekend. The crowds continued to grow as the evening progressed, and the efficiency of the double main stage proved to be a brilliant way to keep the crowd engaged. It didn’t take long for the crowds to grow to the point that the festival was clearly a success. Saturday started off with great performances by Neon Trees and Rebelution, and moved quickly onto another memorable highlight of the weekend. “For me, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is about as good of
a show as you are ever going to get. They sounded great, and the drummer…wow,” said patron Matthew Tanner, of Biloxi, through his blissful grin. It definitely wasn’t just the Jared Leto fans who fell in love on Saturday. 311 and Stone Temple Pilots, who have incredibly managed to avoid obsolescence on the Pensacola airwaves, came out and put on performances that were easily worthy of the headliner and sub-headliner spots. Sunday’s crowds were surprisingly not overwhelming despite the fact that the tickets were free. It was another perfect day featuring stand-out performances by The Smart Brothers, Cowboy Mouth, Galactic and Willie Nelson. Perhaps the most memorable moment of the whole weekend and possibly the most quintessentially “Pensacola” moment of my entire life was the Blue Angels’ f lyover during “Jenny Says.” You just don’t get any more Pensacola than that. From the announcements that were made prior to Willie Nelson, it looks like
DeLuna Fest will be back again next year. It will be very interesting to see how this festival grows. After all, it was never an issue of attendance that doomed SpringFest. I’m already looking forward to next year. info@inweekly.net
PROS
Value, efficient trolley service, location, promotional artwork, weather, date (having the festival this late in the year will be a huge asset toward booking top tier bands while avoiding competition with summer festivals in the future)
CONS
Even if it’s at the beach, a parking lot is just a parking lot—insufficient amount of festival actually on the beach, general lack of non-musical art and performance, exclusively dated headliners, general lack of maps and signs, botched sound during Willie Nelson

RASPUTINA: CELLO ROCK TRIO A MUSICAL HISTORY LESSON WITH CORSETS AND HOOPSKIRTS
ERICA HOUSE
C
olonial federalism, feral children and the Anti-Rent Wars of 1844 are not the typical sources of inspiration for most musicians, but Rasputina is anything but typical. The Victorian cello rock trio formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1992 and has been through many different members, but retains founder Melora Creager with newcomers Daniel DeJesus, cellist, and Catie D’Amica, percussionist. The band has produced seven studio albums and has recorded a documentary this summer aptly titled “Under the Corset,” which is a raw look at life on the road for the trio during their 2009 West Coast tour. Creager is a 20-year veteran of the music industry—playing with acts such as Nirvana, The Pixies, and Marilyn Manson—and describes Rasputina’s music as “heavy or tender, often in the same song. It is emotional and sophisticated, but not avant garde.”
She began playing cello at the age of nine while growing up in Kansas and moved to New York City at 18 to study photography at Parsons School of Design. It was in New York that she began playing with drag performances and eventually the 4AD band, Ultra Vivid Scene. Her love of history is evident in the music she writes, the costumes the band members wear and the style of music itself. “Part of why I’m so interested in history is that people have been making the same mistakes, having the same emotional reactions, for many, many hundreds of years. I search for the human aspect in the driest accounts,” she claims. Earlier albums feature songs about the Donner party, Howard Hughes, and the Little Ice Age, among other notable people and historical events. The interests of the band revolve particularly around the Victorian era, in which Creager is attracted to because of the stark contrast, in that

“Rasputina girls are uptight and straight-laced, but appearing in a rock club wearing bloomers and playing rock and roll music” at the same time. Creager strives to create both for herself and for her fans. She continues, “I make sounds and harmonies that please me. When writing lyrics, I feel like I’m having a conversation or really communicating with listeners, like, ‘Hey, check this out, or what about this idea?’” Rasputina’s seventh album, “Sister Kinderhook,” was released June 15 and displays the harmonious balance of showcasing their evolving sound while also returning back to their earlier, more organic work. “For those unfamiliar with Rasputina’s music, imagine two cellists and a percussionist accompanied by the most vibrato-ish voice you’ve ever heard telling you stories and history—Brothers Grimm and all—of the human struggle before this modern, technological age. But Rasputina will not bore you with mere textbook reading,” music reviewer Michael Faires explains, concerning the band’s latest album. Compared to their prior albums, the latest venture reflects that Creager’s “many years of writing and recording music have finally come together on this one. It’s unique, but not hard to like or understand. I think it’s less disjoined and more fully realized.” Songs on the album explore subjects such as the New Netherland settlements, early American portraiture, and the prehistoric Mound Builder giants of Ohio and Illinois. As for the future of Rasputina, Creager adds, “I can do it all my life long: little

movies, fewer live shows, and many, many more recordings.” With the extensive and diverse musical history already present in her background, there is no question that the band will continue to provide entertaining, intelligent and diverse albums. Rasputina’s show at Vinyl Music Hall could not be more appropriately timed for the season and will be an experience that any music lover wouldn’t want to miss. When asked about her favorite Halloween costume, Creager responded that “Halloween is the only costume opportunity of the year for most people, but a costume is just another part of my workday. Anytime I’ve worn a giant hoopskirt—that’s my favorite costume. I think they’re hilarious.” Creager hopes that her fans will not only enjoy the show, but also have a genuine experience. “I hope they feel exhilarated and that they feel included in a unique experience. Live music is amazing in that it’s a real experience—a moment in time that will not happen again.” I definitely plan on embracing the moment, hoopskirt and all.
