winners JULIAN & KIM MACQUEEN A . A . Dixon Charter School of Excellence is gaining more community support every week. The Innisfree Hotels founder and CEO recently joined his wife, who serves on the school’s board, in adopting the school that is trying to improve the education of inner-city students that the Escambia Public School District has failed. Over 30 Innisfree employees participated in the announcement to the students on Sept. 30. JOE SCARBOROUGH Pensacola’s native son is returning to his hometown to help the Pensacola State College Annual Fund. Scarborough is Pensacola’s biggest cheerleader, continually mentioning our city on his show “Morning Joe.” During the BP spill last year, he broadcast from here to help draw attention to our rapidly shrinking summer tourist season. Thanks, Joe.

DON GAETZ Our state senator from

Niceville will be the Florida Senate president for 2013-14 . When he accepted the election by his peers, Gaetz set as two of his goals– training in higher education on the skills needed by industries moving to the state and making Florida a “safe harbor” for business to expand. The last Northwest Florida politician to be elected senate president was W. D. Childers, 1981-82.

losers PENSACOLA CITY COUNCIL Gover-

nance by a nine-member committee doesn’t work, which is why the Pensacola voters passed the new charter. Apparently, hiring by committee doesn’t work either. Last week, the Council’s choice for its council executive, Scotty Davis, turned down the job, citing to city staff that council members privately had described the position differently.

TEAM SANTA ROSA Two years ago,

TEAM Santa Rosa was the role model for economic development. Leaders questioned why the Pensacola Chamber couldn’t be as effective in luring corporations. Its executive director, Cindy Anderson, was nearly hired away by then-Escambia County Administrator Bob McLaughlin to be his deputy administrator for economic development. Now Santa Rosa County commissioners wonder, because of a federal investigation into Team Santa Rosa and the county, if Anderson should keep her job and should the organization be abolished.

ROGER MAYO The Escambia High ath-

letic director had a bad week. His new hire for football coach, Scott Anderson, and Assistant Coach Tim Jansky were placed on administrative leave with pay after a criminal investigation was launched into whether the coaches tried to intimidate a student into dropping battery charges against a football player.

TOO SMALL Our politics are too small. Locally, we get caught up in the petty and ignore the bigger issues. I’ve always called our local politics a “blood sport” because we love public beheadings that never truly accomplish anything. The recent forced resignation of the Pensacola Chamber’s head of tourism is a perfect example. While the daily cried foul on a series of private, but legal, meetings with hotel owners on the handling of Escambia County’s bed taxes, it turned out to be an employee issue for the Chamber that should have been handled internally. The bigger issues were the ones the hotel owners were discussing: subsidies for the Pensacola Civic Center, more bed taxes being allocated for tourism marketing and the future of the Convention & Visitors Bureau. Instead of addressing them, we’ve seen a barrage of emails between a county commissioner and the head of a minority chamber. There have been attacks on the local company that has handled tourism marketing. The daily paper even called for the resignation of the chairman of the Tourist Development Council–after all two beheadings are better than one. At Pensacola City Hall, we’ve seen a city council mired in political skirmishes over agendas, council executives, the mayor’s staff and last-minute budget amendments that never made it to a regula r council meeting. There were shouting matches, in-

sults and walkouts. The melodrama, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, rivaled “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” except the reality show has better ratings than the council workshops. Pensacola needs a cohesive team working to provide its citizens opportunities to work. It’s jobs, stupid. Council members can cry for a balance of power with the mayor, but their constituents could care less about the feelings of its council. Jobs, education, safe neighborhoods, a vibrant downtown and poverty are their most important issues, according to the Quality of Life survey conducted by the Better Pensacola Forum and PYP. Under the new charter, there is little that they can directly do on those issues, but they can be more supportive of Mayor Ashton Hayward as he works to attract new businesses and expand the existing ones. The council can pass resolutions in favor of Hayward’s efforts to get Superintendent Malcolm Thomas to clean up his closed schools and convert his bus fleet to natural gas. It’s time for the Pensacola City Council to grow up and realize that bickering has to stop. They aren’t a high school prom committee deciding how to decorate the gym for the dance. The people are hurting and told them what they want: jobs, good education, safe neighborhoods, a vibrant downtown and fight poverty. {in} rick@inweekly.net

and the winner is? “Best Local Ad Agency”

For over 50 years, Appleyard Agency has been a part of Pensacola’s advertising industry. We’ve seen the advertising business grow and become a respected part of the community.

Today, the local advertising landscape is thriving. Pensacola has boutique and niche marketing agencies, groups that specialize in PR, branding or auto advertising, and full-service firms that do it all. Whatever their size or focus, our local ad agencies are in demand and dedicated to serving our growing community. We’re proud to work in an industry that helps businesses grow. It’s exciting to build marketing success with bright, responsive advertising. It’s fun to celebrate our industry’s creativity at the local Addy Awards. And it’s rewarding to work alongside our competitors on public service projects.

Pensacola has many fine advertising firms that create exceptional work, employ talented people and contribute to our local economy in more ways than you might think.

So who’s the real winner? It’s our community and the businesses that depend upon local ad agencies to help them succeed.

When you engage Pensacola’s advertising industry, you win.

DIXON GETS GUARDIAN ANGELS

news

Innisfree Adopts Charter School “We always start with fun and then we get to business,” MacQueen said, before introducing a trio of pirates and huge beach balls into the assembly.

By Jeremy Morrison Students sat in their red shirts. They weren’t quite sure what they were waiting for. “I don’t think they really, really get it,” said the Rev. LuTimothy May. Outside in the A.A. Dixon Charter School of Excellence parking lot, Innisfree Hotels owner Julian MacQueen stood waiting with a crew of employees. The school is their new project. “This is more than just money,” he explained later. “This is a commitment of time and energy.” MacQueen and his staff have “adopted” the Dixon charter school. The school recently dodged closure and has been given ultimatums by the Escambia County School District. MacQueen’s wife, Kim, sits on the charter’s board of directors. “You look spiffy,” said Kim MacQueen, as she greeted May in the school hallway. The pastor of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church was sporting a pretty smart suit. It was a big day. This could be the beginning of a big turnaround for the charter. Things are going better already. “You should see the library,” May said, jazzed on the school’s growing collection of books. A.A. Dixon was labeled a failing school by the state last year. It’s also heavily in debt. The school district has given it a year to pull its finances together and somehow get students — some of which entered the school grade levels behind — to pass the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test). Superintendent Malcolm Thomas spared the school after initially threatening a 90-day closure notice. “When the crisis became clear this summer,” Kim MacQueen explained, “my husband and I brainstormed.”

conceded is going to be a “tall order.” Can they pass state standardized tests? Can they score a C and get a pool party? “Remember, this is a challenge and a charge,” May told them. “Can you do your very best everyday?” After Innisfree treated the kids to a bit of pirate swordplay–which Colbert explained to them was the “sport of fencing” and was being done “very safely” –the hotelier took a moment aside to explain why his company chose to wade into the middle of such a struggling story. “Most companies measure their success by the bottom line,” he said. “It’s not just about the money.” MacQueen said he “watched on the sideline” for a year as his wife dealt with the charter. After Rev. May, whom he cited as a “big reason” for his involvement, began heading Dixon’s board, he felt the time was right to try and help. “It’s measurable,” he said of the project. “The scale is very, uh, I think appropriate for the size company we are.” Currently, the group from Innisfree is conducting assessments of the school. From there, they will determine how best to help the charter; it will most likely take the form of fundraising activities and volunteering. The hotel owner said he was trusting in his wife’s take on the school’s chances. “She thinks they can,” MacQueen said, adding that he was also inspired by the community’s support for the school, including teachers’ willingness to take pay cuts. “You can’t pay for that kind of commitment, that comes from the heart.” {in}

“We’re going to have hotdogs and hamburgers and pirates and lots of fun!” Kim MacQueen After a brief moment of chaos, order is returned. MacQueen then made the students an offer. If they can bring their grades up to a C on the FCAT, there’s a pool party out at the Innisfree waiting for them. Kids play with beach balls, as MacQueens and Principal Colbert “You’re going to watch. / photo by Jeremy Morrison have the biggest swimming pool party ever held!” After Principal Kathy Colbert called the MacQueen promised. “We’re going to have assembly in the cafeteria to order, the group hotdogs and hamburgers and pirates and lots from Innisfree filed in. May asked the students of fun!” to give them as loud a welcome as possible. The table off to the side was then unveiled “I want you to show me that you love to reveal gifts–water bottles, sand buckets and them!” he shouted. book bags–for the kids. A round of introductions was made. “This is for trying, this is for all the hard Julian MacQueen told the teachers and work you’re about to do,” MacQueen told students that he “couldn’t think of a the students. more worthy organization, a more worthy Rev. May then reminded the students cause.” But the kids were much more that they were being given the opportunity to interested in what was under a covered prove they could accomplish what MacQueen table off to the side.

How did we do it? We took a second look! In that short time period between the contract signing and the work beginning, several things changed. • Better storm surge protection updates were incorporated into the project design. • As the site was cleared, the perceived petroleum pollution was found to be much less than initially believed. • The removal of the Main Street Wastewater Treatment Plant offered a less expensive alternative for wastewater conveyance. And, the result of BDI’s second look? An estimated cost savings of $700,000$1,000,000 to the Maritime Park project and to this community of whom we strive to serve.

IN STAFF PICKS ITS FAVORITES

photo by Matthew Coughlin, Samantha's Best Photography Pick

Everybody always asks us if Best of the Coast is rigged by the IN staff. And we always laugh. Because if that was true, all of our favorite places would win big every year, and you guys would probably catch on pretty quick. Or at least we hope you would. So we decided to look over this year’s Best of the Coast winners and point out where our personal favorites didn't make the cut. So to answer your question: No, Best of the Coast isn't rigged. But if it was, it would look something like this:

Best PhotographY: As a photographer myself, I can especially attest to the amazing pool of photographic talent we have here locally. One I'd personally love to see as a BOC winner is Matthew Coughlin. He is a phenomenal creative portrait photographer, who does some stunning work with off-camera lighting. He recently posted a maternity photo shoot that makes me wish I were pregnant again, just to get some rad babybelly photos. Make sure to check out his 365 photo project if you've yet to do so. (Samantha)

Best Soup: McGuire’s Irish Pub’s Crocked Onion Soup is the best combination of salt, onions, cheese and bread— all of my favorite things. It’s a medley of onion reduction broth loaded with chopped sautéed onions, topped with toasted French bread and covered with oven-baked Swiss cheese. (Jennifer)

Best Restaurant-North Pensacola/Nine Mile/UWF: If it were up to me, Jasmine Fusion would win, hands down. As a three-year resident of Cantonment, I would say it is by far the number one perk of living so far away from normal Pensacola civilization. Their

Best Cheeseburger: Tops Choice Hamburgers. It’s dangerous that Tops is about a minute away from my house, as I’m tempted to stop by and pick up a cheeseburger—with extra cheese, no pickles or onions—for lunch and dinner, every day. Tops Cheeseburger + Chocolate Milkshake = Heaven. (Jennifer) Best Day Drinking: Sure, the small plates and flatbreads at Jaco’s Bayfront Bar & Grille are great, but I also love to sit out on their porch on a beautiful day and have a cocktail while I admire the yachts I’ll never be able to afford. (Jennifer) Joani's Best Bartender Pick: Forrest Gaston 646 4

Rick's Best Kept Local Secret Pick: Native Cafe / photo by Samantha Crooke

seafood martini alone is good enough to break my random bouts of vegetarianism. (Samantha) Best Pizza: Oh, Founaris Brothers, maybe one day you will make the BOC list for Best Pizza. Your cheese-wheel pizza steals my cheese-loving heart. (Samantha) Best Bartender: My adorable boyfriend is a bartender at Paddy O'Leary's on the beach, so obviously if I had it my way, he would win this category. But personal biases aside, Forrest Gaston is honestly a really great bartender, and I'm sure all the Paddy's regulars would agree with me. He's super-fast, superfriendly and super-creative — especially when it comes to creating martinis and shots. If you don't believe me, just order a pop rock martini from him next time you're at Paddy's, and tell him Joani sent you. (Joani) Best Noodles: Ok, I know Best Noodles isn't even a BOC category, but it should be just so Tu-Do Vietnamese Restaurant could win it. Not only are their noodle bowls delicious and filled with fun stuff like peanut sauce and veggies, they are also super cheap. And I'm a fan of any place that has Sriracha on the table, so Tu-Do wins big in my book just for that, too. (Joani)

Best Fro Yo Bar: This isn't a BOC category, yet. But I predict it will be next year, and I predict that Berry Yogurt reigns supreme (or at least it should). Variety is key when it comes to yogurt bars, and this is where Berry Yogurt has everybody else beat. Their flavor selection ranges from the usual like Cali tart and mango to awesomely odd like taro (my personal favorite), and their topping selection doesn't disappoint either. For me, mochi is the mark of a legit yogurt bar, and Berry always has that chewy goodness on hand. (Joani) Best BBQ: IN readers know about my passion for King's BBQ. Being from the Mississippi Delta, I've eaten my share of barbecue, and King Rivers’ large pulled pork sandwich is one of the best I've ever eaten. It reminds me of Abe's in Clarksdale, Miss. (Rick) Best Kept Local Secret: Native Cafe, on Pensacola Beach, is a jewel. Their Original Fish Tacos are a delicious, healthy alternative to fast food. I haven't tried their breakfast menu yet, but the word is it's the best on the beach, maybe the best in the area. (Rick) Best Unsung Hero: John Peacock has worked behind the scenes on strong mayor and consolidation. His Panhandle Charitable Open has raised over $200,000 since he launched it 10 years ago. His latest initiative is to get the Escambia County School District to make its closed schools available for offices and meeting rooms for local non-profit organizations. (Rick) {in} inweekly.net

October 3 - November 11, 2011 at Gallery 88 Reception: Thursday, October 6, 5-7 p.m. at the WUWF Studios

How often do we pass closed doorways and wonder what is behind the closed door? One doesn’t have to wonder in New Orleans’ French Quarter. In what may be America’s most free spirited city, the doorways are always open many of them 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. You don’t have to guess what is happening around the doorways. The activity is all on display to observe with your own eyes.

The countdown is almost over— DeLuna Fest '11 is next weekend (Oct. 14-16). And that means we're getting ready to deliver the most bad-ass "unofficial" festival guide you've ever seen. We've talked to headliners like Weezer and Cake, future headliners like Grouplove and Ghostland Observatory and even the living legend herself, Ms. Wanda Jackson. Tune in next week for all the good stuff.

The Prodigal Brothers Return To say The Smart Brothers’ absence has been sorely felt is an understatement. Last stay, they destroyed the willpower of the non-converted — winning them over with their charisma and new-wave folk music. Bars propped open doors to accommodate the masses, impromptu street performances on sidewalks turned into block parties, and if you didn’t get to the bar 30 minutes beforehand, you watched the show sober in order to get a good view. Lou and Jay Smart are the pair behind this buzz worthy group. Jay, who speaks in long, witty passages like a character out of an Aaron Sorkin show, recently took the time to chat about their upcoming homecoming show at Vinyl on Oct. 9. IN: The first time I saw you in Pensacola was performing on the corner of Palafox and Main. I thought, “Who the hell are these people?” SMART: “Yeah, the funny thing is that we’ve been doing that all over the country. And in New York, or a big city like that, it looks kind of natural, and almost gets overlooked. But on the street corners of Pensacola it seems slightly out of place and gets noticed.” IN: Some compare you to The Avett Brothers, or describe you as having a “Strokes-y” component. Have you ever been insulted by a comparison? SMART: “For me, not so much because I don’t draw that comparison. My brother was always bothered by it because obviously we want to be as original as possible. Because if you’re not original, you’re nothing. Especially nowadays, where there’s a million of this type of band, a million

... I feel like I fall in love almost too easily, so perhaps it’s lackluster in comparison. My brother is the exact opposite. He’s only fallen in love — truly — maybe once or twice in his life and both times led to periods of prolific creativity.”

genres, a million sub-genres. So we just keep working to craft something different. I mean there’s a lot of the same sort of scene (like the Avett Brothers). New wave of rowdy folk music - anti-pop, DIY in operation, old school and traditional but with energy from the Indie/Emo scene we all grew up with ... but I think (laughs) to answer your question, that we’ve never been offended by it because we’ve always seen our distinctions.” IN: How many hats do you own? SMART: “I think about 25 fedora-type hats, and my brother has three to four top hats.

We share. We got an endorsement deal with a hat shop so they gave us a bunch for free. We’ve amassed quite the collection of odd hats: paperboy hats, golf hats, I’m ashamed to say, novelty hats, like purple fedoras and such ... I tend to buy hats everywhere I go, but we also tend to give a lot away, so the number is always changing.” IN: Break-ups or falling in love. Which provides better inspiration? SMART: “For me it’s always the tension, it’s always the sad stuff

IN: Are there any songs that you just don’t like performing anymore because you associate them with certain memories you’d rather not think about? SMART: “I’m reading this book. There’s a big part about music and how it has a very strong connection with memories, perhaps more than any other artistic medium. That stuck with me. Smells are like that. Sometimes you can walk into a bar and smell just a hint of cologne and suddenly your feelings are reconfigured, just for a moment. For me (music) is like that, except on a much deeper level. I’m not afraid of taking that on, I almost relish revisiting those moments. Yes, it’s bittersweet and (singing those songs) can open up a scar. Maybe there’s no lesson in it in the end. You’re just there to observe whatever inspired it again ... so I just enjoy it.” {in}

news of the weird An option for suicide “with elegance and euphoria” is how Lithuanian-born Ph.D. candidate Julijonas Urbonas (London’s Royal College of Art) described his “Euthanasia (Roller) Coaster,” currently on the drawing board. Urbonas’ model of “gravitational aesthetics” would be a third-mile-long, 1,600-foot-high thrill ride engineered to supply 10 Gs of centrifugal force (a spin at about 220 mph) to induce cerebral hypoxia, forcing blood away from the head and denying oxygen to the brain. Euphoria (and disorientation and anxiety, but not pain) are likely states to precede the brain’s shutdown. Urbonas insisted that users would have the option through the first two minutes of the three-minute ride to rethink their decision and bail out (or else to push the final “FALL” button). (Suicide is legal in four European countries and Oregon and Washington.) Government in Action! An opengovernment advocacy group’s survey of federal agencies, released in July, revealed that eight of them have unresolved Freedom of Information Act requests that are over a decade old, including one pending for more than 20 years. (The 1976 FOIA law requires resolution within 20 business days, with a 10-day extension under “unusual circumstances.”) (Also, regarding the FOIA, a June 2011 request by the city of Sioux City, Iowa, for background documents regarding the recent Postal Service decision to move jobs from Sioux City to Sioux Falls, S.D., was met promptly -- by the Postal Service’s forecast that the likely fee for the documents would be $831,000, even though under the law the first two search hours and the first 100 documents are free.) News That Sounds Like a Joke The convenience store clerk, Ms. Falguni Patel, was giving testimony in the September trial of Morgan Armstrong (charged with robbing her in Hudson, Fla., in 2009) when she began shaking and then passed out while seated in the witness box. A relative of Patel’s approached, removed her sneaker and held it to Patel’s face, without success. The relative explained that Patel was subject to such blackouts and that sniffing the sneaker often revives her. (After paramedics attended to her, Patel took the rest of the day off and went back to court the next morning.) Great Art! Although Moroccan artist Mehdi-Georges Lahlou, 27, concedes that photographs can be misinterpreted, he maintains on his website that he never wants to hurt people’s feelings. Nevertheless, he said he is proud of his photo exhibit in which he stands completely nude,

allowing various verses of the Quran to be projected on his skin. His latest scheduled appearance was at an art fair in Marrakesh in October. • Two women were charged in September with what was likely a major art theft for Johnson City, Tenn. Connie Sumlin, 45, and Gail Johnson, 58, were identified from surveillance video as the ones who snatched two pieces of art off the wall in the entrance of a local Arby’s restaurant (a picture of some pears, and a metal art object, with an alleged combined value, according to the police report, of “$1,200”). • Earlier this year, Marion Laval-Jeantet won a notable Prix Ars Electronica award for her “hybrid” work that, she said, intends to blur the boundaries between species. LavalJeantet stepped onstage in Ljubljana, Slovenia, as a horse-human, having earlier injected herself with horse blood (after prepping her body for several months with different horse immunoglobulins). She also walked with stilts that had “hooves” affixed to the bottom. She capped the show by extracting some of her own presumably-hybrid blood, to be frozen and stored for future research. Fetishes on Parade Indecent-exposure flashers appear to be invading even off-limits sanctuaries in their quest to be seen -- in Florida, anyway. In Sarasota County in September, Shane Wheatley, 31, was arrested after a Comcast cable customer complained that Wheatley had begun fondling himself while installing the woman’s TV service. Three days earlier, in Niceville, a 14-yearold boy (whose name was not released) was charged with indecent exposure after a worshipper reported him masturbating openly during services at the First United Methodist Church. The boy admitted he had done the same thing during services the week before because he was “bored.” Least Competent Criminals In September, a jury found Terry Newman, 25, and an associate guilty of aggravated assault for a home invasion in San Antonio in 2009, thus adding insult to Newman’s injuries. Newman was shot by a resident during the initial invasion, and then again by another resident when he returned 15 minutes later to retrieve his car. Finally, after police encountered Newman following a short chase, he resisted officers and was shot again, for the third time. (None of the injuries was life-threatening.)

Day Job: Bartender at Emerald City and owner of Drue Christopher Promotions Pensacola Resident Since: 2004

Nightlife:

Emerald City. The place really does change the game of the nightclub experience. Between the staff, the shows, and the incredible DJs that both spin regularly and for special events, EC is one of the coolest clubs in the region. Check out one of the monthly Saturday Drink and Drown or themed “Club One” events and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Play is a refreshing addition to this town, too.

Outdoors:

Sundays at Pensacola Beach, for sure. Also, I love kayaking Adventures Unlimited. They take pride in their business and take care of their customers, which is why I go back every year during the summertime, almost monthly.

Tuscan Oven’s Margherita Pizza

Good Eats:

I have a huge passion for pizza, and although Ozone and Hopjack’s offer decent pies, it’s Tuscan Oven that gets me every time! It’s some of the best pizza I have ever had the pleasure of devouring, and their homemade creamy parmesan dressing to dip the crust in is ridiculous. I love the fresh-mex at Cactus Flower Cafe, and when I’m in complete bum mood, I’ll order wings from Wing Zone. They all bring me joy.

Arts & Culture:

Retail Therapy:

Never Miss Events/Festivals:

Clothing for guys in Pensacola is unfortunately limited to a few mainstream chains in the mall, however Don Alan’s carries some really hard to find, upscale and casual brands that I like, and like most guys, I could spend hours in Best Buy getting lost in the magic.

Watering Holes:

I love visiting Dedrick out at Flounders on the weekends, when I can. He is a riot and a spectacular bartender. Bloody Marys are a bartender’s secret weapon that can really show off their skills, and my buddy Cody at Atlas/Fishhouse knows how to make them perfectly. I like The Other Side. It’s a very upscale video-bar that sets the mood for a chill day, and their Friday 6-8 bingo is a rowdy blast.

I am the biggest movie buff ever, and I’m about to start my own movie-review website! I see almost every movie that comes out so the Rave on Bayou is like my second home. It’s nice that Gulf Breeze Cinema carries the independent films that don’t make it to wide-release, and Pensacola Little Theater, Pensacola Symphony, and Gallery Nights all get my thumbs up, too!

Memorial Day weekend, Pensacola Beach. I’ve met people that travel from Alaska to experience our beaches and welcoming attitude for this weekend. I’ve never seen anything quite like it, and I think it’s really awesome that such a big and nationally known event takes place right in our own back yard.
