Editor’s letter Inspired by art and music

I am proud to say that there is currently a new awakening and awareness in both music and art in the Philippines today—so notable, in fact, that we have moved this issue one Sunday down so Mara Miano, our amazing and spirited intern, could cover Malasimbo (p. 6), a music PHOTOGRAPH BY JO ANN BITAGCOL

and arts festival held in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro. Now on its third year and with feedback so enticing, the event is something that I look forward to attending next year.

Inquirer RED Magazine also lets you in on what people from the past and present music scenes listen to (inquiRED, p.30), with hopes that you can enrich your own musical taste by adding new tunes to your playlist. For nonconformists, this issue’s acquiRED (p.11) might encourage them to start a collection of vinyl records, March has been quite an exciting and eventful month, we decided to dedicate this entire issue to all things art and music, beginning with the beautiful and talented DJ Christina Bartges, a.k.a. Miss Badkiss, gracing our cover. We were privileged enough to shoot her in a collaboration with EverywhereWeShoot couple Ryan Vergara

which are exactly art and music put together. Art and music inspire this magazine precisely because they naturally unite people. Spice up your weekend by visiting galleries and attending gigs and concerts with friends or family; surely all that creativity will unite and inspire you, too. Things are getting exciting out there, don’t miss out!

and Garovs Garrovillo at the recent Finale Art File exhibit of Roberto Chabet, deemed the Father of Philippine Conceptual Art and a mentor to many of today’s big names in art.

‘Labyrinth’ by Roberto Chabet, 2013

A pilgrim’s path

Roberto Chabet tackles the labyrinth theme in his recent Finale Art File show do with the labyrinth he created for his recent show at the Finale Art File, but this much is certain about Roberto Chabet (above). The Father of Philippine Conceptual Art and a mentor to many contemporary artists, Chabet has been described as “anti-museum,” churning out works that are neither collectible nor permanent, as art to him, wrote artist An Xiao in her blog Hyperallergic, is for the moment; after, it becomes memory. Composed of a hollow block labyrinth embedded with shards of glass, a red nylon cord descending from the ceiling into a pool of red tangles, and a set of red fluorescent arrows pointing to all directions, Chabet’s labyrinth suggests a winding journey—his own, perhaps? The road—and his loyal followers— await.

A new spin

Vinyl records enjoy renewed appreciation among old-school music junkies and art lovers alike Thanks to the retrospective hipster phenomenon, turntables and vinyl records are making a huge comeback. Consider yourself lucky if you’ve inherited an already large collection, as these are quite difficult to find in Manila. They make exquisite, irresistible presents to the audiophile, pack rat, or old soul, whether for their music or rare album art. MSM
