Happy Holidays INROADS Alumni Family!

Office of the President & CEO

It is a pleasure to begin this holiday season by celebrating great news. Guided by our journey towards equity, INROADS has achieved proven societal impact and created considerable wealth enhancing outcomes for its alumni including higher rates of home ownership, income, and net worth.

What an incredible accomplishment born from 50 years of service. But we are just getting started. We’re excited to embark on the next evolution of INROADS with a strong focus on breaking barriers and building futures.

We recently launched our new HBCU+ program, which is designed to connect talented HBCU students with corporate internships and career opportunities. The HBCU+ program will be bolstered by our Careers Beyond the Yard HBCU recruitment campaign, aiming to close the internship disparity gap for Black students. Please join us in amplifying the campaign among your networks. Also, we were thrilled to receive a historic $10M grant from Southern Company Charitable Foundation, supporting our collaboration with United Negro College Fund and Thurgood Marshall College Fund to impact HBCUs.

INROADS is a future-forward organization moving into an era of digital transformation. We’re excited about the recent launch of our INROADS app, which makes INROADS accessible everywhere you go. Please download the free app from The App Store or Google Play store.

We are grateful for the support of alumni like you and Sekou Kaalund, INROADS Board Vice Chair and head of the consumer banking northeast division at JP Morgan Chase. In this issue, you’ll read about Sekou’s story and meet our alumni chapter presidents. We invite each of you to get engaged with our powerful network of over 30,000 alumni - join an alumni chapter, donate, volunteer, and connect with fellow INROADS Alumni.

Finally, I’m proud to report we ended fiscal year 2021 strong. Our virtual Benefit Gala and virtual Visiones Hispanic Heritage Month Event, as well as significant contributions from new partners and donations to our Legacy campaign, have positioned us to exponentially increase our impact across the nation.

I’m so proud to be a part of this organization. Together, let’s create opportunity, impact, and change lives for years to come.

Sincerely, Forest

Harper, Jr. CEO & President INROADS

FOR DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
ADVOCATING

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EARLY YEARS.

I grew up in Raleigh, NC and went to Enloe High School. I worked all throughout high school, starting in the 9th grade. I worked two jobs for about 35 hours a week during the school year and 75-80 hours a week during the summer. I was making $3.25 an hour, minimum wage at the time.

To this day, I remember the INROADS internship program being so significant, because at my first summer internship, I made $8.50 an hour. It didn’t take a mathematician to realize that I worked fewer hours yet made much more money. That really underscored the importance of having these types of opportunities.

I attended Hampden-Sydney College, a private men’s liberal arts college in Hampden Sydney, Virginia. I majored in classical studies and minored in Spanish. I also studied abroad in Spain. Later, I went to Duke University to pursue a graduate degree in public policy.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH INROADS?

INROADS was new to my family, as no one in my family worked in a corporate setting. A high school counselor encouraged me to apply to the INROADS internship program (the high school component).

I secured a paid internship through INROADS with Nationwide Insurance working in human resources. I started the summer after graduation from high school.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR ADVANCING BLACK PATHWAYS.

The financial hardships my family experienced, and my early experiences with INROADS, inform all the work I later did with Advancing Black Pathways at JPMorgan Chase — from focusing on financial health and creating a hardship fund for students in financial distress to supporting students in danger of dropping out. Leading Advancing Black Pathways was a reflection of what I experienced, as well as what my friends experienced. And the reality is people continue to have those experiences. So, whether it’s INROADS preparing students for internships, or creating the Financial Services Institute (FSI) as a partnership between JPMorgan Chase and INROADS, my early

experiences inform everything I do. I think about the things that helped open my pathway, and how we can replicate those for others.

IS IT TRUE YOU MET YOUR WIFE THROUGH INROADS?

Yes, so I was in the INROADS program with one of my closest friends that I grew up with. He and I were in the first INROADS sessions at NC State. We were sitting next to each other and when my wife walked in, I was like, “Hey man, what do you think about her?”

So, yes, I did actually meet my wife at INROADS. We dated throughout high school, went to prom together, and continued dating in college and grad school. We got married and now are parents of 3 children and a dog. We likely would not have met were it not for INROADS, as she attended a boarding school in Durham. Both Jennifer and I remain committed to working with INROADS. She used to manage the INROADS internship program at Cigna Healthcare. She is now an associate professor of New Testatment for the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

SOME MIGHT CALL YOU AN INROADS “POWER COUPLE.” HOW DO

YOU BOTH GET TO HAVE IT ALL?

I think it’s less about having it all and more about appreciating all that you have. If you try to create this perfect work-life balance — it’s an illusion. At different points my job has demanded more of me and at other points my family has needed more of me. So, it’s really recognizing the balance that you need in your life and to think holistically about where you are. Are you anchored on a passion and a purpose? Do you understand your “why”? Why is it that I’m doing all of these things? And so, for me, appreciating all that I have means that I can do a “mark to market” on how I spend my time.

Appreciating what I have aligns with why I feel I’ve been put on this earth. And that’s important because it’s so easy to chase materialistic things or power in this Instagram and Facebook world. Then people find out that they’re still unhappy when they’ve achieved what they perceived to be the things that will bring them happiness. Not to say, by any stretch, that I have a perfect life, but I’m perfectly happy with the many things in my life that give me an opportunity to have personal and professional fulfillment, and that I can always remain anchored to my priorities.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN IN YOUR PERSONAL TIME?

Travel. I love traveling with the family, since I do work so much. I do prioritize time with family and so spending time together is key for me. I also enjoy supporting or attending my children’s functions. My hobbies are really focused on family and just continuing to make impact. And if not making impact, just enjoying the rich blessings that have been bestowed upon me — my family, my three kids and my wife.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR INROADS? WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE AS A BOARD MEMBER?

To both serve the needs of students and corporations in their evolution to hiring more diverse talent. Post George Floyd, there’s obviously still an important need for greater diversity. My vision is that INROADS continues to be one of the key organizations that enables corporations to tap into diverse talent, but also continues to prepare that diverse talent to capitalize on opportunities.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS?

I’m fortunate to have a large job with a large P&L and lead 10,000 people in my role, but my future goal is to continue to make impact in everything that I do. I hope to help others along their journey to building and investing in inclusive teams. I recognize that the more senior I’ve become in my career, the more influence and impact I can have on the culture of an organization and on how we think about talent. And so, I want to continue to lead and be an advocate for talent and ensure that we’re creating inclusive growth not only within our company, but also within the communities we serve.

A FINAL PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

It’s so easy to become captivated in your own success or desire for it. But people have to give themselves grace and mercy. We haven’t lived through a pandemic, at least in my lifetime. So, if you don’t take the time to reset and reflect when life gives us that opportunity, then you will probably contribute adversely to your own health, relationships, etc. So, take the time to reflect.

Also, don’t be afraid to change course. It’s okay to make another decision versus feeling locked in or trapped in one opportunity. Sometimes we fear change or the pursuit of our passions. When I started to lead Advancing Black Pathways, some people asked, why leave the investment bank to go work on a diversity issue? My response was, why not? It’s my passion and, candidly, that job enabled me to shift an entire landscape across the country. I was able to fulfill my desire for impact and change lives. Doing that changed outcomes, not only for others but for me as well.

TOWARDS EQUITY:

WEALTH IMPACTS FOR BLACK PROFESSIONALS IN CAREERS LAUNCHED BY INTERNSHIPS

SUMMARY

This article expands upon the study of wealth impacts for students who matriculated through a career development program targeting African American, Hispanic, and Indigenous students. The study was conducted by Fulbright Scholar, Adam Davids, who was hosted by INROADS, a nonprofit organization focused on providing access and opportunities for career acceleration to students from backgrounds underrepresented in corporate leadership.

Authors theorize that students who matriculate through the INROADS process can leverage training, professional experiences, and the support of peer connections to land in highincome careers and build wealth. An analysis of economic indicators shows considerable wealth enhancing outcomes, compared to college educated White peers, including heightened rates of homeownership, higher income, and comparable net worth.

16

KEY FINDINGS

#1

Black families and Hispanic families earn substantially lower incomes compared to non-Hispanic white families. These lower income levels make it very difficult to reduce racial gaps in wealth.

#2

There are substantial racial gaps in median income among households with and without college degrees. Among those without a college degree, whites earn almost 41% more, while among those with a college degree, white households earn income that is 44% higher than Black families. However, for 34% of individuals who completed the INROADS process, incomes exceed median income for college-educated White households.

#3

Among the most critical components of wealth accumulation is homeownership. While over 71% of white families own homes, only 41% of Black families and 46% of Hispanic families do so. For INROADS alumni, homeownership rates are at 76%.

#4

INROADS Alumni are also advantaged when looking at wealth more broadly. While only 18% of all households and 8% of non-white families have a net worth that exceeds $500,000, more than 40% of INROADS Alumni from our sample group have attained this level of financial security.

CONCLUSION

The wealth profiles of INROADS alumni as compared to their peers suggest the important role that such programs can play in augmenting formal education, and thereby make real impact on income potential, wealth accumulation, and economic well-being for groups that have previously been excluded from such opportunities. The longevity of INROADS, along with its ongoing engagement with program alumni, help to ensure continuing expansion of corporate partnerships and social networks available to new program participants. In this manner, there is likely an intergenerational aspect to the INROADS process, much like wealth itself operates. While INROADS, as a single entity may not be enough to close the nation’s racial wealth gap entirely, scaling the efforts of INROADS to exponentially serve more students from underrepresented groups may have a considerable impact on eliminating key barriers to wealth accumulation for underrepresented groups.

STRATEGIES That Will Help You Kickstart a Successful Career

1. BE WILLING TO LEARN

Think of yourself as a lifelong learner! You can continue to learn no matter what stage of your career you are in. When you learn continuously, you gain more skills and become adaptable to change in your career path. Possessing a willingness to learn is an attribute that is highly valued in today’s workforce.

2. STRUCTURE YOUR DAYS

Regardless of whether you work remote or in-person, to be a successful worker, you must structure your days. Create to-do lists, set goals, and come up with a daily schedule. The more structure you can build into your working days, the less likely you’ll be sidetracked.

3. BECOME A PROFESSIONAL PROBLEM SOLVER

Employers look for employees who have excellent problem-solving skills. This indicates to an employer that you have a range of listening, analytical thinking, creative thinking, communication, decision-making and teamwork skills. To become a professional problem solver, you need to work on one skill at a time. Once you have mastered it, move on to the next!

4. INCORPORATE FEEDBACK INTO YOUR WORK

Ask for feedback from your co-workers! Feedback is crucial to your development in the workforce. Don’t get discouraged! The greatest experiences come from trying new things and believing in yourself. You will never learn a new skill until you try.

5. FIND A JOB YOU ENJOY

When you enjoy the work you are doing and the people you are working with, you’ll find that time passes effortlessly. It may take awhile to find a job that is a good fit for you, but it is worth the search. Identify your must-haves and research different companies. Once you find a job that you enjoy, your work will feel less like a burden.

6. BE A TEAM PLAYER

Working with a team and collaborating with other employees is a central part in most career fields. Do your best to work with the team instead of against the team. Make sure you listen more than you speak. Many great things can be accomplished by working well with your teammates and often it is essential for the success of a business.
