From INROADS President and CEO Forest T. Harper Dear Friends and Supporters of INROADS, As I reflect on 2021, it was a year of challenges, achievements, and transformation for INROADS. While we entered the fiscal year with momentum, the environment was not without uncertainty. We navigated the new virtual workplace, addressed barriers to providing hands-on coaching and mentoring of the students INROADS serves, and responded to the ever-changing landscape as we continued to confront COVID-19. Still, 2021 was a year of unprecedented achievements for INROADS. Through College Links, we impacted the lives of 450 underrepresented high school students with career exploration, mentoring, and soft skill development. Through the INROADS Internship Program, we connected over 900 college students with professional paid internships, world-class workplace readiness training, mentoring, and coaching. We provided scholarship assistance to 181 students, helping offset some of their college expenses. And because of the commitment and hard work of our staff and board, INROADS emerged from the turbulence of 2020 stronger than ever. We were awarded over $1.5 million in foundation grants and $600,000 in government contracts. We received Handshake’s Early Talent Award for visionary engagement and excellence in digital recruiting. We released data proving the long-term impact of INROADS programs on helping close the racial wealth gap in America. All of this has been a collective effort, and INROADS is blessed with colleagues and supporters who consistently step up to the task and neutralize the uncertainty. Our staff is just amazing, and their loyalty to our mission and focus on making a critical impact is beyond what any leader could desire. Our board provides tremendous strength to the organization, contributing insight, expertise, and resources. Our alumni continue to learn and support each other and serve as shining examples for our students of what’s possible. Our volunteers and supporters generously offer their time and other assets to make our work possible. Leadership is a privilege, and I don’t take for granted what really makes this organization work: the people who are dedicated and persistent and ensure that the students are our first and last priority. Thank you, to all of you. While 2021 marks a year of gratitude, let us go forward with a renewed sense of energy as we work to scale our impact and shape the future for the next generation. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us, and we invite you to join with us and share our passion as we move toward equity.

From INROADS Board Chair Barron Witherspoon Dear Friends of INROADS, It has been my high honor to serve on the INROADS National Board of Directors for over a decade. As I reflect over this time and the past year, I can say that INROADS has transformed. INROADS expanded its vision, mission, and programs to serve more individuals at different life stages and in different pathways. Every board member is personally invested in the mission of INROADS and the staff is committed to positively changing the trajectory of the lives we touch. This past year, still impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial equity movement in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, was strong. INROADS continued student recruitment, programming, and training virtually. With no geographic limitations, we were able to reach even more individuals and grow all of our programs. Companies looking to invest in racial equity started to see INROADS as a multiplier of invested funds. Powerful data also emerged showing the long-term value of the INROADS experience in not only shaping better citizens, but in creating wealth for those previously left out of many career opportunities. INROADS is becoming a crucial part of an ecosystem focused on the development and advancement of diverse talent in corporate America and is positioned to lead a future where equity of opportunity is made real for previously underserved communities. As Chair Emeritus, I feel blessed to have served this venerable organization, and I am confident in the leadership of our CEO, Forest T. Harper, Jr., and our new FY 22 board chair, Yvette Smith. My long association with INROADS began in the 1980s when I was responsible for internship programs at Procter & Gamble, and I am proud to have played a role in securing the future of INROADS. I look forward to continuing the work of INROADS.

Making INROADS TOWARDS EQUITY By Breaking Glass Ceilings

Thasunda Duckett, INROADS Class of 1996 As only the third Black woman to lead a Fortune 500 company, Thasunda Duckett, president and CEO of TIAA, is in the position to help millions of people prepare to live full lives in retirement. But leading up to her historic role, she was a student at the University of Houston, where she met INROADS and began to shape her belief that she could reach incredible professional and personal heights. “INROADS was my disrupter. Prior to INROADS, I

just knew that I was going to college. College was the goal in our house. With INROADS, I gained access to corporate America… and access to other Black and Brown kids who looked like me and who were dreaming like me,” said Thasunda.

Thasunda used her experience with INROADS and her internship at Fannie Mae to define what she believed was possible. With INROADS, Thasunda began to define her future of being a CEO of consequence in the financial services industry. And from there, she has forged a historic career path. As the CEO of Consumer Banking for JPMorgan Chase, Thasunda used her platform to create programs to empower people of color, including the Advancing Black Pathways initiative and the establishment of the INROADS Financial Services Institute (FSI). As TIAA’s president and CEO, Thasunda continues to find new ways to lift others up. She represents not only a vision of success, but also a vision of what’s possible.

Making INROADS TOWARDS EQUITY

Through a Community of Action Throughout the year, INROADS hosts special events that recognize, celebrate, inspire, and educate, all in support of our mission. Events bring together corporate and community partners to take action on creating a more equitable workplace and society. All 2021 events were held virtually; however, the spirit and impact wasn’t dampened, and the virtual experience made participation possible for attendees near and far.

INROADS celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with its annual Visiones gala event, held virtually in September 2020 in support of the INROADS Latino Initiative. In 2020, 15 Hispanic students were awarded scholarships at the gala.

In November 2020, INROADS proudly celebrated 50 years of developing corporate and community leaders with three days of events that engaged professionals, alumni, and corporate and community partners. The conference included the Disruptive Innovation Diversity Summit, a dynamic, highly interactive forum focused on eliminating inequities in the workplace and society. The conference concluded with the Career Expo, which attracted nearly 500 visitors.

34

Presented by P&G and powered by BET, the INROADS 2021 Founder’s Day Benefit Gala recognized INROADS alumni, corporate and community partners who are fulfilling the legacy of the mission and are making an impact in the community.
