For one week I have been to Guangzhou because of work. Chinese colleagues showed me the Canton tower and one day I took a walk and watched the city. This is what I saw. My name is Insa Wulf and on the following pages I want to show you what I have seen, I want to tell you what I experienced, give you an impression of the atmosphere. Maybe you find some inspiration, maybe you fall in love with some beautiful landscape. Most of all I want to encourage you to travel and explore new places. And until then: feel the different moods in this little book.

Guangzhou „Guangzhou — known historically as Canton or, less commonly, Kwangchow — is the capital and largest
city of Guangdong province, People‘s Republic of China. Located on the Pearl River, about 120 km (75 mi) north-northwest of Hong Kong and north-northeast of Macau, Guangzhou is a key national transportation hub and trading port. One of the five National Central Cities, it holds sub-provincial administrative status. Guangzhou is the third largest Chinese city and southern China‘s largest city. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 12.78 million. Some estimates place the population of the entire Pearl River Delta Mega City built up area as high as 40 million including Shenzhen (10.36 million), Dongguan (8.22 million) and most parts of Foshan (7.19 million), Jiangmen (4.45 million), Zhongshan (3.12 million) and a small part of Huizhou adjoining Dongguan and Shenzhen, with an area of about 20,000 square kilometres (7,700 sq mi). In 2008 Guangzhou was identified as a Beta World City by the global city index produced by the GaWC, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.“ source: Wikipedia Cultural shock. People around all the time. Air smells totally different, humidity that I have never felt before. Spices, unknown vegetables, loud traffic noise, even during night. Cabs everywhere, corn juice, living on the 25th floor, friendly colleagues, many strangers, elevator broken. Can‘t read anything, grandmas and grandpas with their grandchildren, everyone else working? Smog. This was only a look on the surface of a city and a culture that is so different to ours. This already was so damn exciting. I asked myself what lies behind these modern streets that I have seen. Some old roads and streets with little shops gave a little hint of what has been everywhere in the city and still is at a few or many corners. The way of living in rural chinese villages though, I can‘t imagine. Happy not to live in these shock-moments anymore. Sad it was only for a short time, a small exciting adventure.
