Welcome to Fairbanks
Once a gold rush boomtown, now called the “Golden Heart City,” visitors find Fairbanks inviting, engaging and awe-inspiring—the heart of the Last Frontier. With the midnight summer sun shining nearly 24 hours a day, Fairbanks is simply bursting with energy and things to do. Get lucky panning for gold, float the Chena River, mingle with reindeer and musk oxen, cool off in an ice museum, take a refreshing hike through the boreal forest and look for birds and wildlife, or be inspired by Native art, historic sites and live performances. Late August through late April, during the Aurora Season, you have a great chance to see the shimmering light of the aurora borealis. Along with a host of other fascinating activities and events unveiled during the winter. Primarily due to Fairbanks’ ideal aurora watching location our river city was named #2 of the top ten destinations to visit in the United States in 2013 by Lonely Planet, the leading travel guidebook publisher and website. Additionally, Chena Hot Springs Resort/Chena River State Recreation Area has been selected as one of the Ten Best 2013 Winter Trips worldwide by National Geographic and very recently Fairbanks was again picked by National Geographic as a “Winning Winter Destinations” for 2014. Fairbanks also features a grand, year-round calendar of events. Several local celebrations have been recipients of the American Bus Association’s (ABA) Top 100 Events in North America title—World Eskimo-Indian Olympics, Golden Days, World Ice Art Championship, and more. The Festival of Native Arts and Midnight Sun Festival both earned the acclaim for 2014.

Getting Here
The gateway to the Interior and Far North of Alaska is surprisingly easy to reach. Domestic and international flights connect Fairbanks to the world. The newly expanded Fairbanks International Airport is a modern, up-to-date and friendly portal into our community. Fairbanks is ideally located to be the starting point of a southbound or roundtrip itinerary, or be the “save the best for last” final stay of a northbound trip. Many group tour planners have also found that using the Alaska Railroad as part of their tour adds something special and, depending on group size, you can even book your own railroad car. No matter how you get here, the authentic Alaskan hospitality you will find sets Fairbanks miles in front of its competition.

Fairbanks enjoys the summer’s midnight sun and the winter’s northern lights. The Brooks Range keeps the harsh Arctic winds at bay and the Alaska Range keeps the wet, coastal weather to the south. Expect dry weather, dramatic clouds and blue skies, little wind and warm summers with temperatures up into the high 80s. Winter brings snow from mid-October through March, with temperatures averaging 8°F to –19°F. Casual, comfortable clothing and shoes are almost always acceptable. Although summer wear includes shorts, short-sleeved shirts and sandals also plan to pack pants, long-sleeved shirts and a light jacket. Winter gear includes parkas, boots, hats, mittens and snow pants for your outdoor adventures. Dressing in layers is recommended, regardless of the season, as temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day. 2

The History of Fairbanks
Fairbanks, nicknamed the “Golden Heart City,” was founded through the misadventures of Ohio trader E.T. Barnette. In late August of 1901, Barnette hired Charles Adams and the sternwheeler Lavelle Young (seen in the photo above) to take him and $20,000 worth of trading goods to the village of Tanacross, where the Valdez Trail crossed the Tanana Valley. They ran into trouble when the 150-foot sternwheeler could not ascend the Tanana River due to sandy shallows a few miles above the mouth of the Chena River. Hoping the Chena would meet up with the Tanana, Barnette persuaded Adams to carry him up the Chena. The boat again ran into shallow water and Adams left Barnette’s group and goods on the banks of the Chena River west of what is now downtown Fairbanks. Things looked bleak for Barnette until Felix Pedro struck gold about 16 miles away on July 22, 1902. Looking to improve business, Barnette sent Japanese employee Jujiro Wada by dog sled to Dawson City to spread the good news of the gold strike. Soon, the community became the new hub of the Alaskan gold rush. District Court Judge James Wickersham suggested Fairbanks as the new town’s name, in honor of Indiana Senator Charles Fairbanks. By 1908, Fairbanks was the largest, busiest city in Alaska’s territory, boasting electric lights, city sewer, fire and police protection, a courthouse and jail, a hospital, school, library and three newspapers. Thanks to construction of the Alaska Highway, the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, military installations and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the town has continued to grow over the last century. Fairbanks still has operating gold mines and embraces its colorful gold rush roots with attractions and fun-filled events celebrating the historic quest for gold. The Fairbanks region is home to a diverse group of Native peoples who first resided in the area many thousands of years prior to the miners and merchants of the Gold Rush. The two Alaska Native groups indigenous to the Interior and the Far North are the Athabascan Indians and the Iñupiaq Eskimos. These cultures come alive in art, dancing, drumming, singing, storytelling and games of skill. 4

The Aurora Borealis
The residents of Fairbanks, Alaska are accustomed to spectacular views of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. Most people view from their backyards, but many travel out of town away from the city lights for the most spectacular views. A dynamic aurora covers the entire sky, dancing wildly while flashing brilliant colors of green, pink and red.
What time of the day is the best time to see the aurora? The time for viewing is between evening and morning twilights on clear or even partly cloudy nights. Aurora activity can occur anytime and is most common between 10pm and 3am.
Mok Kumagai/Aurora Borealis Lodge
What makes Fairbanks’ location special? Fairbanks’ position under the “Auroral Oval”—a ring-shaped region The “Aurora Oval” around the North Pole—makes it one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis. Our location offers a great balance of clear nights, occurrence frequency and activity that draws people from all over the world. Ask your accommodation’s front desk if they offer a wake-up call when the aurora appears. No guarantees, but the longer you’re here, the better your chances of seeing a great show. Recommended road-accessible sites for aurora viewing around Fairbanks: • Chena Hot Springs • Chena Lake Recreation Area • Ester, Wickersham and Murphy Domes • Haystack Mountain
• Turnouts along the Elliot, Steese and Parks Highways • Cleary Summit • Any place away from the city light 5
Geophysical Institute, UAF
When is the best time of year to view the aurora? During the Aurora Season, August 21 through April 21, you’ve got a great chance of seeing the beautiful and mysterious curtains of light. Intensity varies from night to night, with the best displays happening in the late evening to early morning hours. When the nights are clear and dark enough, there will be aurora visible an average of four out of five nights. If you stay a minimum of three nights and are actively out during the evening hours, your chances of seeing the aurora increase to 90%.

A tour group can view the pipeline from the Alyeska Pipeline Visitor Center on the Steese Highway, about six miles north of Fairbanks. • Gold history activities such as gold panning tours are an excellent way to acquaint your clients with the gold mining history of the Interior. These attractions are a great way for your clients to try panning for their own gold.

• Visit a museum to learn about our natural and cultural history.

Adventure Tour Building Blocks
Groups of all kinds are looking to add a bit of adventure into their trips. Natural and cultural history tours as well as exciting flightseeing and river trips abound in the Fairbanks region. Wow your clients by adding some adventure to their itineraries.
Pike’s Waterfront Lodge
• Arctic Circle trips are increasingly popular. Several tour companies in the Fairbanks area offer excursions north up the Dalton Highway and beyond. If you would like to include an Arctic Circle program in your tour, but don’t have a full day, consider a flightseeing trip to one of the remote rural villages north of the Arctic Circle. • A whitewater raft experience near Denali can be a great way to spice up a trip with thrills and there are outfitters to help you make this exciting float down the river a reality. • Hot springs in Interior Alaska are an ideal place for your group to overnight, dine and soak. Particularly during the late summer when the nights are dark, the hot springs are a relaxing place to view the northern lights.
Denali Outdoor Center
• A nature walk through the boreal forest is a good way to get acquainted with the unique environment in this land of contrasts. • Flightseeing to Denali is another outstanding adventure opportunity. A number of regional carriers offer flightseeing trips in and around Mt. McKinley. Some include glacier landings while others fly in pressurized airplanes, which allow your clients to circle the peak. If you’re lucky, you can even see climbers on the mountain! • A wilderness tour of Denali National Park and Preserve is one of several types of activities available in the Denali area. Denali is famous for its bear population as well as moose, caribou, fox, Dall sheep and a variety of birds and other creatures.
Chena Hot Springs Resort
• Prudhoe Bay and the Arctic Coast await at the end of the Dalton Highway to the north. Several tour companies in Fairbanks offer extended, multi-day tours up this road with stops at the Yukon River, the Arctic Circle, Alaskan homesteads, the Brooks Mountain Range and the oil drilling and extraction facilities at Prudhoe Bay on the north coast of Alaska.

• Float trip opportunities abound in and around Fairbanks, and a variety of experienced outfitters can arrange partday to multi-day float trips for groups. No experience is necessary and individual guides will make arrangements that are appropriate for your group. • Alaska Native culture tours in Barrow, Fort Yukon, Anaktuvuk Pass and other rural Athabascan and Eskimo villages are a great way to get off the beaten path and discover Alaskan living in person. These trips can range from an afternoon to several days, depending on the destination and interests of the clients.

Winter Tour Building Blocks Fairbanks is Alaska’s hot spot all year round...especially in winter! Often you hear the residents say that winter is the best time to live in Alaska, for lots of reasons. We have the best seats in the house for northern lights viewing. Many of us go sledding on moonlit winter evenings. We have downhill skiing available and the longest cross-country ski and dog mushing seasons in the United States.
• Ice sculptures are one of the big reasons people come to visit Fairbanks in winter. The ice sculpting season culminates in an impressive late-February, early-March festival called the World Ice Art Championships, where over 60 of the world’s best ice sculptors gather to compete in a variety of classes and skill levels. • Skiing and snow shoeing is easy in Fairbanks; we have countless cross-country ski trails that range from lighted and groomed to backcountry tracks as well as local downhill ski areas. Our snow season is the longest and most reliable in the United States, and our winter hospitality is unmatched.

• Sled dog races are one of Fairbanks’ big sporting attractions. See the famous long-distance Yukon Quest in February or the Open North American Championship in March. If your clients want to try a dog sled ride themselves, several kennels in the area offer rides that range from 30 minutes to several days.

• The aurora borealis is one of the most spectacular displays of nature a person can encounter. At 64 degrees north latitude, Fairbanks is known as one of the best locations to see this fascinating phenomenon. Typically, they are seen between 10 pm and 3 am, late-August to late-April.
• Hot springs are really the very best in winter, when you can sit outside and look at the stars and the northern lights. Steam rises off the water and you’re toasty warm in the hot pools. Our hot springs resort offers a variety of other recreational activities, as well as dining and lodging throughout the winter.

• Museums, shopping, dining, arts and cultural activities: winter is by no means down-time for Interior Alaskans, because Fairbanks remains open all year round! Winter is the perfect time to take advantage of lower prices and fewer crowds.
