Traveling in the time of COVID-19 In a time when it feels as though uncertainty and change seem to dominate our days, we can all rest assured the sun will keep rising, the snow will keep falling and the aurora borealis will keep weaving its way across the sky. Heralding the lowest population density in the United States of America, here a modicum of social distancing has long been a way of life. In Alaska’s Interior and far north, the buffer between you and the next person was substantial prior to COVID-19, so adding a foot or two to get to six feet apart has been quite manageable. Many of the activities and adventures Fairbanks offers are malleable in regard to COVID-19. It is reasonably easy to social distance while chasing the northern lights, basking in the midnight sun, floating the Chena River, golfing at midnight, hitting the nature trails or dog mushing in the moonlight.

Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center

Make this your first stop in Fairbanks. Not only beautiful but educational, the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center is loaded with brochures, maps of all kinds, walking and driving tours, WiFi and Internet access. Serving as the regional visitor facility, friendly and knowledgeable staff have answers to your questions.

A 9,000 square foot portal into life in the far north, the exhibition space has outstanding displays and dioramas about Interior Alaska’s people, wildlife, landscapes and seasons. In addition to the exhibits, the center also has an outdoor excursion trip planning area and an Alaska Geographic store. Explore the grounds and find colorful Athabascan flower mosaics, an antler arch and a classic 100-year-old log cabin. The center is following COVID-19 safety precautions including mask wearing, hand sanitizing and social distancing.

The center is home to Explore Fairbanks, Alaska Public Lands Information Center, Alaska Geographic, Denakkanaaga and Tanana Chiefs Conference Cultural Programs.

Alaska Native Heritage Dynamic indigenous peoples. Alaska Native peoples have lived in Alaska for more than 14,000 years. The Interior and Arctic regions are primarily home to Athabascan Indians and Inupiaq and Yupik Eskimo. Once nomadic, most Athabascans now live in urban centers or in small villages throughout Alaska’s vast Interior.

Alaska Native artisans create works of art out of strikingly different materials. Athabascans work with caribou antler, birch bark, moose hide, porcupine quills, trade beads and more to make baskets and exquisite beadwork.

Farther north in the Arctic, you will find Inupiaq and Yupik Eskimo. These resilient people are often coastal and create elegant carvings of the natural world around them out of walrus ivory, bone, caribou antler, whale baleen and driftwood. Alaska Native artists demonstrate, exhibit and sell their work in museums, galleries and specialty shops presenting an authentic view into the past as well as a bridge to the future.

Midnight Sun Season Bask in the sunshine. Wake up in the middle of the night to find the sun shining brightly, people out biking and gardening and walking the dog. With the summer sun shining up to 24 hours a day during the Midnight Sun Season from April 22 to August 20, the subarctic summer is filled with action and brimming with growth.

In fact, from mid-May through mid-July Fairbanks experiences 70 straight days of 24-hour sunlight.

Aurora Season Experience the magical northern lights. Fairbanks is a world-famous aurora destination. Spanning all four seasons during nine months of the year, Aurora Season runs August 21 through April 21. Fairbanks’ location directly under the Auroral Oval—a ring-shaped region hovering over the far north—combined with a good balance of clear nights, occurrence frequency and activity allows for excellent aurora viewing opportunities. Additionally, Fairbanks’ low precipitation, distance from coastal areas and minimal light due to low population density consistently contribute to clear, dark skies and optimum viewing.

Take a guided tour and chase the aurora with the experts. Drive to a nearby vantage point and wait for the northern lights to appear. Or look for them from a heated “aurorium” cabin, yurt, dome or lodge; on a dog sled adventure; by snow cat tour; while ice fishing or on a flight above the Arctic Circle. Ask your accommodation’s front desk if they offer a wake-up call when the northern lights are out. No guarantees, but the longer you’re here, the better your chances of seeing a great show.

Natural phenomena are unscathed by viruses so local guides are still chasing the aurora and have developed ways to safely assist visitors in this pursuit. Whether seeing the northern lights is an unfilled dream, or something that you can’t get enough of, with careful planning Fairbanks can make your aurora viewing wishes come true.

Aurora Viewing in the Fairbanks Area • Intensity varies nightly, with the best displays from late evening to early morning.

• Aurora will be visible an average of four out of five nights when the sky is clear and dark enough.

• Auroras range in color—typically iridescent green, they can also be yellow, magenta and red.

• If you stay a minimum of three nights and are actively out during the evening hours, your chances of seeing the aurora increase to 90%.

• A full moon does not interfere with aurora viewing— in fact, the full moon can enhance the contrast between the landscape and the aurora.

Winter Season Winter rocks. With a blanket of snow covering the ground, hoarfrost clinging to the trees and the northern lights dancing overhead, Fairbanks is a portal into a winter wonderland mid-October through late March. Here you can mush a team of Alaskan sled dogs through a pristine forest, watch two-ton blocks of crystal clear ice turned into works of art or hit the trails via snowshoes, skis, fat tire bikes or hiking boots. Skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, curling and ice hockey abound. Challenge snowcapped hills on skis or snowboard or cross-country ski birch-laden trails.

Fairbanks is a dog mushing mecca and accessing Alaska’s state sport—dog mushing—has never been easier. Local mushers have a variety of adventures to choose from, and if it’s spectating you prefer, Fairbanks hosts multiple sled dog races. Visits to kennels and even hiking with huskies are other great ways to experience some puppy love.

In Fairbanks, ice art is not only remarkable, but commonplace during winter months with sculptures found all around town. The ice is harvested by forklift from local ponds and artists create brilliant sculptures with chain saws and specialized ice carving tools. There are ice museums and local ice events where you can frolic in playgrounds made of ice, skate on all-natural ice rinks and crawl through ice mazes.

Denali National Park Stand in awe. Denali rises 20,310 feet (6,190 meters) and is North America’s highest peak. The crown jewel of the Alaska Range, Denali means “the Great One” in the Athabascan language. Denali National Park and Preserve covers six million acres of pure wilderness and is an easy two-hour drive or four-hour train trip from Fairbanks.

In the summer, traverse the Denali Park Road in your own vehicle to mile 14 or journey deeper into the park via tour bus.

Fairbanks outfitters offer both COVID-19 friendly road and air tours of the park all year. Flightseeing is also an exciting way to view the Alaska Range and get up close to the Great One. There are many ways to experience the park but make sure you verify your plans before you embark.

The park’s varied terrain includes brilliant mountains, pristine rivers and lakes, colorful tundra, alpine meadows, sweeping vistas and abundant wildlife. Along the way you may spot moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, wolves or any of the hundreds of other species that call the park home.

The thirty days that I spent walking through the wilder­ness of Denali National Park while working on my undergraduate ge­ology research for the University of Alaska Fairbanks were some of the most unique and inspiring days of my life. Every day when I unzipped my tent door, I tilted my head back to look at the massive beauty that is Denali and could not help but wonder, “Why is it so big?” It is one thing to look at pictures of the Great One, but it is a remarkable experi­ence to actually stare up at it.

Growing up in Alaska, I have seen many beautiful landscapes, but Denali is truly stunning.

Walking through the glaciated wilderness provides an unparalleled feeling of solitude that is special to the park. To me, Denali is truly the heart of the Alaskan wilderness.

The project was founded in the Fairbanks North Star Borough in July of 2019 by artist Somer Hahm. Alaska's first barn quilt trail is designed to ignite the eyes and minds of Fairbanks by creating accessible, colorful and site-specific public art pieces. Barn quilts, bold geometric paintings of quilt block designs, enliven our shared spaces, honor familial heritage and bring attention to architecture. The cornerstone of the project has been “Flying Geese” which was mounted on one of the historic barns at Creamer's Field in Fairbanks.

Wildlife Viewing Fairbanks is the headquarters for many large, unspoiled landscapes that serve as great habitat for animals, including Denali National Park. The remote Dalton Highway crosses large tracts of boreal forest, subalpine and Arctic tundra. Along the way, you may be able to see black bear, caribou and moose. The nearby Chena River State Recreation Area is a wild forest with many sloughs and a mixture of treed and treeless landscape. Moose and beaver frequent this area as well as other small animals like ermine, fox and red squirrels.

Moose Moose are a common part of life for most Alaskans. These massive, hulking creatures wander through our sports fields, poke around our neighborhoods and nonchalantly cross our roads and highways. Moose are generally happy to pose for a picture or two, but give them lots of room, especially when calves are nearby.

Caribou Caribou travel in large herds during spring and fall migrations but are often seen in small bands or as individuals during the summer. In Alaska and Canada domesticated caribou are called reindeer. In Fairbanks, there are visitor attractions that include experiences with reindeer and are a popular way to learn about these fascinating animals and snap an up-close Instagramworthy photo.

Bear Look for bears in summer fishing along streams with spawning salmon. In late summer and fall, they are often found feeding on berries in open meadows or on the tundra. Black bear populations are plentiful in Alaska's Interior, but sightings of this shy animal are rare outside of national parks and state recreation areas. Bring along potent bear spray if you're hiking outside of urban areas, just in case.

Fox The red fox is common in the Fairbanks area and can sometimes be seen darting across the road in woody, brushy areas. If you are lucky, you may see one with the “cross” coloration—a dark band crossing the shoulders and back. The Arctic fox is white in winter and gray or brown in summer. Its ears and body are smaller compared to the red fox. Look for it north of the Brooks Range.

Interior Neighbors Breathtaking vistas. This 175,000-square-mile inland area between the Alaska Range to the south and the Brooks Range to the north comprises about 30 percent of the state, making it as large as the states of Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio combined. This area includes colorful communities like Nenana, Delta Junction, Glennallen and Tok. Alaska’s adventure corridor, with its rich gold rush history and spectacular scenery, stretches from Fairbanks along the Richardson Highway to Valdez and includes mighty rivers, mountains and historic roadhouses.

Geographically situated in a sweet spot in the Tanana Valley, Fairbanks has the Brooks Range to the north keeping the Arctic winds at bay and the Alaska Range keeping the wet, coastal weather to the south. Air, Rail, Road & Ocean Just 140 air miles or 195 road miles below the Arctic Circle, Fairbanks is the farthest north city in Alaska and in the United States accessible by air, road and rail. COVID-19 has impacted transportation to Fairbanks but many options are still available.

Air Fairbanks is a key player in domestic and international air travel with excellent connectivity. Home to over 500 small aircraft equipped with wheels, floats, skis and fat tires, it is not unusual to see a 747 and a Piper Cub on parallel runways. In the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic, air carriers have instituted more techniques that reduce the already low risk of onboard transmission.

Domestic: Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines offer year-round direct flights to and from Seattle. Summers usually see direct flights from Chicago and Denver with United Airlines and from Minneapolis with Delta Air Lines. Check directly with each carrier for route availability offered in summer 2021. There are a variety of connecting flights that make getting to Fairbanks easy from anywhere in the U.S. International: Fairbanks is the smallest U.S. market with nonstop flights to both Europe and Asia. German airline Condor offers onceweekly passenger service during the summer season between Fairbanks and Frankfurt. Japan Airlines and other air carriers periodically offer charter service from Japan-based and other airports.

Regional: Alaska Airlines and regional air carriers, including Wright Air Service and Warbelow’s Air, provide frequent air service between Fairbanks and numerous Interior Alaska rural communities as well as Anchorage.

Road To get around town, rental cars, shuttles, taxis and ridesharing

services are available in addition to the Fairbanks MACS Transit Bus System. Statewide shuttle companies provide transportation to many locations. Cars, trucks, vans, motorhomes, motorcycles and bicycles can be rented. Gravel road rental cars and campers are available from specific vendors for travel on the Dalton and Denali highways.

Fairbanks from Anchorage, a magnificent 12-hour journey that stops in multiple places including Denali National Park. From mid-May through mid-September, the summer train runs daily; visit AlaskaRailroad.com for current schedules. In the winter, the train offers weekend and some midweek service between Anchorage and Fairbanks, allowing passengers to experience remote winter in Alaska from the comfort of a warm railcar.

The winter train stops in Denali for those who have made arrangements with tour companies who provide road trips from Fairbanks.

Ocean Cruising the Gulf of Alaska? Visitors can try one of the major cruise lines that offer land tour packages that bring you to Fairbanks and Denali National Park and Preserve. Highways

Alaska offers some of America’s most amazing motoring adventures over a wide variety of terrain. Roads range from two-lane highways to narrow dirt roads.

Many Interior Alaska roads have uneven surfaces due to the thawing of the frozen ground below the road surface. Road work happens in the summer, so expect occasional delays. COVID-19 has impacted driving through Canada so verify border regulations before you travel.

From fine dining to food trucks to seasonal markets, the local food scene is delightfully delicious. These businesses are operating thoughtfully and safely during the time of COVID-19 with many offering seasonal outdoor seating, carry-out options and reduced indoor dining.

Fairbanks’ eclectic palate has given rise to cosmopolitan cafés offering sushi, vegan, Indian, barbeque, Vietnamese, Italian, Thai and more. If you are looking for some Alaskan-style home cooking, many restaurants use local produce, meat and seafood in their recipes. Try reindeer sausage or grilled Alaskan salmon alongside home-grown Yukon gold potatoes and sweet garden-fresh baby carrots.

Hiking

Public lands accessible from Fairbanks offer unlimited opportunities for day hikes, extended backpacking trips or a casual stroll in the woods with varying lengths and difficulty. Three of the most popular trails within an hour’s drive of Fairbanks are Granite Tors and Angel Rocks located in Chena River State Recreation Area and Table Top located in the White Mountains National Recreation Area. A leisurely stroll through the boreal forest at Birch Hill Recreation Area, Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge or Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary—all within minutes of downtown—will introduce you to the flora and fauna that make the Interior their home.

Fishing

With bountiful freshwater rivers, streams and lakes, Interior Alaska provides ample opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. The Chena River is easily accessible and family friendly for catching Arctic grayling. The Richardson and Steese highways and nearby Chena Hot Springs Road offer a variety of lakes stocked with Arctic char and grayling, rainbow trout, king and silver salmon in addition to natural stocks of northern pike and burbot. South Fairbanks offers Tanana Lakes Recreation Area and near the City of North Pole you’ll find Chena Lake Recreation Area—both convenient places to wet your line, summer or winter.

Birding

Interior Alaska is a thoroughfare for hundreds of species of birds.

Sightings are greater during the spring and fall months as thousands of birds make their annual migration to and from their nesting grounds. A walk around Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge and adjacent Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary, less than five minutes from downtown, will lead you through fields and forests full of sandhill cranes, Canada geese, snow buntings and Townsend’s warblers. Don’t forget your binoculars to scope close-up views.

Interior Alaska is wild, scenic and accessible. Whether it’s the allure of sleeping under the stars or a place to park your RV for the night, private and public campgrounds can accommodate all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. While options abound, one example is the Chena River State Recreation Area—a short drive from town with tent and RV campgrounds and road-accessible public use cabins. Farther south, the Tangle Lakes area on the Denali Highway rewards the traveler with outstanding scenery and good chances to view wildlife. This campground offers campsites, interpretive signs and access to many recreational opportunities.

Floating the Chena River heralds the start of the summer and is a favorite local and visitor activity. Whether it be on an authentic sternwheeler, rented canoe or kayak or a trendy paddleboard, there are multiple ways to enjoy the river. Adding to the fun are the outdoor dining decks along the way where you can stop and imbibe an Alaskan beer or eat oysters on the half shell or a piece of scrumptious peanut butter pie. Tanana Lakes Recreation Area and Chena Lake Recreation Area are two other outstanding places to go for a float. Both easily accessible lakes offer wonderful ways to paddle away and bask in the midnight sun.
