Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center

Make this your first stop in Fairbanks. Not only beautiful but educational, the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center in downtown Fairbanks has brochures, maps, free WiFi and local walking and driving tours. Serving as the regional visitor facility, the friendly and knowledgeable staff have answers to all your questions. The free 9,000-square-foot exhibit hall features outstanding displays and dioramas showcasing Interior Alaska’s people, wildlife, landscapes and seasons. Enjoy free films and programs on Alaska’s natural and cultural history. Explore the grounds and discover outdoor sculptures and colorful tile mosaics of Athabascan flowers adorning the walkways. Snap a selfie in front of the farthest north antler arch or the classic one-hundred-year-old log cabin. The center also has Alaska Native cultural programs, a planning area for outdoor excursions and an Alaska Geographic store.

With the summer sun shining up to 24 hours a day during the Midnight Sun Season from April 22 to August 20, the subarctic summer is filled with action and brimming with growth. In fact, from midMay through late July Fairbanks experiences 24/7 daylight for 70 straight days. Whether you plan on going on a nature hike, watching a glorious garden grow, floating down the Chena River or having a late-night dessert on an outdoor deck, the rousing Midnight Sun Season is awesome and energizing. Middle-of-the-night activities include running, golfing, gardening, walking the dog and even baseball— where the Alaska Goldpanners start their historic solstice game at 10pm. With the chance of a truly rainy day low, the average temperature hovering at 70 degrees and the midnight sun simply refusing to set, our top-of-the-world town enjoys one of the best summers the Earth has to offer.

When I arrived in Fairbanks, my impression of the midnight sun was that it was some sort of gimmick. The sun would set after midnight and we’d get a brief pause in daylight, but I was completely wrong. The midnight sun makes time feel infinite. After an evening soak in the hot springs, I will go on one of the many hikes around the area and forget what time it is as I descend around one in the morning, when it feels like four in the afternoon. The midnight sun is an infectious, intangible energy that spreads to visitors and locals alike. Fairbanks is just full of light for all of its seasons.

Aurora Season Scan the skies. Fairbanks’ renowned aurora viewing lures people from all over the world during the Aurora Season from August 21 to April 21. Fairbanks’ location is ideal for northern lights viewing because it is directly under the “Auroral Oval”—a ring-shaped zone over the Far North where aurora activity is concentrated. Additionally, low precipitation in Fairbanks contributes to consistently clear nights and low population density contributes to less light pollution which means darker skies. All combined, these factors make the Fairbanks region an outstanding destination for aurora viewing.

In fact, the aurora will be visible an average of four out of five nights when the sky is clear and dark enough.

Drive or book a tour to a nearby vantage point and wait for the northern lights to appear. Or arrange to view them from a heated “aurorium” cabin, yurt or lodge, on a dog sled adventure, by snow cat tour or on a flight above the Arctic Circle. Winter activities that have recently been paired with aurora viewing include ice fishing and snowmobiling. Ask your hotel front desk if they offer a wake-up call when the northern lights are out. No guarantees, but the longer you’re here, the better your chances of seeing a great show.

The aurora is such a beautiful phenomenon and even if you’ve seen it a hundred times you are never going to experience it the same way. I try as often as possible to capture all the different “moods” of the aurora—not just the big displays on clear nights but displays at varying intensities and in different kinds of weather—as a way of both preserving the delight of the moments for myself and sharing the experience with an audience mostly unable to see the lights for themselves.

As soon as winter comes to Fairbanks, ice artists begin creating dazzling works of art from two-ton blocks of ice. These massive masterpieces vary every year and never cease to capture both the mind and the imagination. Visit a year-round ice museum to see and learn about ice carving. February through March, the World Ice Art Championships and the International Ice Classic feature exquisite ice sculptures and playgrounds made of ice to frolic in, sled down ice slides and crawl through ice mazes.

Denali Stand in awe. Denali rises 20,310 feet (6,190 meters) and is North America’s highest peak. The crown jewel of the Alaska Range, Denali means “the Great One” or “High One” in the Athabascan language.

Journey into the park and let the grandeur of Denali and the Alaska Range take your breath away. Although summer months are most popular, the Alaska Range is enticing any time of year. Denali National Park and Preserve covers six million acres of pure wilderness and is an easy two-hour drive or four-hour train trip from Fairbanks.

In the summer, traverse the Denali Park Road in your own vehicle to mile 14 or journey deeper into the park via tour bus.

Flightseeing is also an exciting way to view the Alaska Range and get up close to “the Great One.” The park’s varied terrain includes brilliant mountains, pristine rivers and lakes, colorful tundra, alpine meadows, sweeping vistas and abundant wildlife.

Along the way you may spot moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, wolves or any of the hundreds of other species that call the park home.

Hike through Alaska’s ultimate wilderness or float a remote river to see caribou cross a northern valley, fish a serene alpine lake or simply listen to the call of the wild.

In addition to Denali, there are many other glorious national parks to explore in the Interior and Arctic regions. These parks are mostly vast and untouched wilderness with few or no roads, trails or established campsites. Local air taxis provide flightseeing trips and outfitters guide day trips or overnight campouts to remote locations.

Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve covers 8.4 million acres of pristine beauty, sometimes called Alaska’s ultimate wilderness.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve at 13.2 million acres is the largest national park in America. There are four mountain ranges and nine of North America’s sixteen highest peaks.

Kobuk Valley National Park is renowned for half a million caribou and sand dunes created from ancient glaciers.

Go inside a glacier. Yes, you heard that right…go inside a glacier. The Castner Glacier to be specific. Just a 2.5-hour pristine ride from Fairbanks this amazing glacier cave will blow your mind. It does require a short hike (2.6 miles round trip) and a modicum of common sense…but the bragging rights are off the charts. There are a few other amazing glaciers accessible from Fairbanks, but we would encourage a guided tour to get to those beauties.

Alaska Native Heritage Vibrant indigenous peoples. Fairbanks’ northern clime reveals a rich mosaic of indigenous arts and culture. There are many different indigenous groups in Alaska and each has their own way of life, including language, material culture and traditions.

Alaska’s vast Interior is home to Athabascan people who were once nomadic but now live in small villages. Farther north, the Arctic is home to Inupiaq Inuit people (previously called “Eskimo”).

One thing that Fairbanks has taught me about my own culture is how much history is in our own city, from the potlatches to the Native dances and sports at the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics. One memory that stands out to me is the canvas tent inside the exhibit hall in the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center. I went there with my mom and she told me that when she was growing up, she and her 11 siblings would sleep in a tent just like that on the Yukon River while their parents were harvesting fish or berries or moose. I was so amazed because the tent was so small! Fairbanks holds a lot of history and the Natives here hold a lot of stories and I love that!

Alaska Native peoples create works of art out of strikingly different materials like caribou antler, moose hide, whale baleen and walrus ivory. Athabascans make baskets and more out of birch bark and are renowned for exquisite beadwork. The resilient Inupiaq Inuit of the Far North are often coastal and create elegant carvings of the natural world around them from ivory, bone and driftwood. Offering an authentic view into the past as well as a bridge to the future, Alaska Native artists demonstrate and sell their work in galleries and specialty stores. Visitors can see Alaska Native performing arts like drumming, dancing and fiddle playing in locales around town and during events. Adventurous travelers can visit remote villages and be inspired by the resourcefulness and the contemporary lifestyle of Interior and Arctic peoples.

Weather Situated in the Tanana Valley, the Brooks Range north of Fairbanks keeps the harsh Arctic winds at bay and the Alaska Range keeps the wet, coastal weather to the south. Expect dry weather, dramatic clouds, blue skies, little wind, warm summers and cold winters. During summer months you can slip on your flip flops and swimsuit and head to a lake beach and when the snow flies you can put on your cold weather gear and experience winter guaranteed!

What to Wear Pack a sense of adventure along with casual, comfortable clothing and shoes for your trip to Fairbanks. Dressing in layers is recommended regardless of the season as temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day. Although summer wear includes shorts, short-sleeved shirts and sandals, also plan to pack pants, long-sleeved shirts and a light jacket. Winter gear includes parkas, boots, hats, mittens and snow pants for your outdoor adventures.

Three of the most popular trails within an hour’s drive of Fairbanks are Granite Tors and Angel Rocks located in Chena River State Recreation Area and Table Top located in the White Mountains National Recreation Area. A leisurely stroll through the boreal forest at Birch Hill Recreation Area, Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge or Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary—all within minutes of downtown—will introduce you to the flora and fauna that make the Interior their home.

With bountiful freshwater rivers, streams and lakes, Interior Alaska provides ample opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. The Chena River is easily accessible and family friendly for catching Arctic grayling. The Richardson and Steese highways and nearby Chena Hot Springs Road offer a variety of lakes stocked with Arctic char and grayling, rainbow trout, king and silver salmon in addition to natural stocks of northern pike and burbot. South Fairbanks offers Tanana Lakes Recreation Area and near the City of North Pole you’ll find Chena Lake Recreation Area— both convenient places to wet your line, summer or winter.

Birding

Interior Alaska is a thoroughfare for hundreds of species of birds.

Sightings are greater during the spring and fall months as thousands of birds make their annual migration to and from their nesting grounds. A walk around Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge and adjacent Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary, less than five minutes from downtown, will lead you through fields and forests full of sandhill cranes, Canada geese, snow buntings and Townsend’s warblers. In fact the Sandhill Crane migration is so significant that Fairbanks sports an annual Sandhill Crane Festival at the end of August. A drive up the Steese Highway is a great way to experience alpine tundra as well as find some alpine specialties like northern wheatear, surfbird and willow and rock ptarmigan. Don’t forget your binoculars to scope close-up views.

Interior Alaska is wild, scenic and accessible. Whether it’s the allure of sleeping under the stars or a place to park your RV for the night, private and public campgrounds can accommodate all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. While options abound, one example is the Chena River State Recreation Area—a short drive from town with tent and RV campgrounds and road-accessible public use cabins. Farther south, the Tangle Lakes area on the Denali Highway rewards the traveler with outstanding scenery and good chances to view wildlife. This campground offers campsites, interpretive signs and access to many recreational opportunities.

Fairbanks is the headquarters for many large, unspoiled landscapes that serve as great habitat for animals, including Denali National Park. The remote Dalton Highway crosses large tracts of boreal forest, subalpine and Arctic tundra. Along the way, you may be able to see black bear, caribou and moose. The nearby Chena River State Recreation Area is a wild forest with many sloughs and a mixture of treed and treeless landscape. Moose and beaver frequent this area as well as other small animals like ermine, fox and red squirrels.

Moose Moose are a common part of life for most Alaskans. These massive, hulking creatures wander through our sports fields, poke around our neighborhoods and nonchalantly cross our roads and highways. Moose are generally happy to pose for a picture or two, but give them lots of room, especially when calves are nearby.

Caribou Caribou travel in large herds during spring and fall migrations but are often seen in small bands or as individuals during the summer.

In Alaska and Canada, domesticated caribou are called reindeer. In Fairbanks, there are visitor attractions that include experiences with reindeer and are a popular way to learn about these fascinating animals and snap an up-close Instagram-worthy photo.

Bear Look for bears in summer fishing along streams with spawning salmon. In late summer and fall, they are often found feeding on berries in open meadows or on the tundra. Black bear populations are plentiful in Alaska's Interior, but sightings of this shy animal are rare outside of national parks and state recreation areas.

Bring along potent bear spray if you're hiking outside of urban areas, just in case.

Fox The red fox is common in the Fairbanks area and can sometimes be seen darting across the road in woody, brushy areas. If you are lucky, you may see one with the “cross” coloration—a dark band crossing the shoulders and back. The Arctic fox is white in winter and gray or brown in summer. Its ears and body are smaller compared to the red fox.

Look for it north of the Brooks Range.

Take an Alaskan cruise to . . . Fairbanks?

Despite being almost 500 miles away from oceanside ports in Southcentral Alaska, Fairbanks is a popular destination in the summer for visitors taking a cruise to the state. That’s because many cruise lines coming to Alaska offer one-way Gulf of Alaska trips that include the port of Vancouver in Canada and either Whittier or Seward as the port in Alaska. These cruises typically offer land tour packages that incorporate Fairbanks and Denali National Park into their itinerary. In the packages, Fairbanks is generally the first or last place people visit, making it easy for visitors to add on extra days so they can experience more of Alaska’s Interior and Arctic with Fairbanks as their basecamp. Other cruise visitors will take a one-way cruise across the Gulf of Alaska and then explore Fairbanks and other communities on the road or rail system on their own.

Alaska’s cruise season runs from May to September, with each month offering a different experience for visitors who come to Fairbanks. May to early June will generally see smaller crowds and better value as well as giving people a chance to experience 24 hours of daylight, which extends almost to the end of July. MidJune to early August are the peak summer months when Fairbanks offers the warmest weather in the state and around-the-clock activities and events. From mid-August through September, visitors have an opportunity to see the northern lights in one of the best destinations in the world to see them. There are numerous ways cruise ship passengers to Alaska can enjoy the state’s “farthest north port” of Fairbanks. Contact your travel agent or cruise company for more details.

Gold Rush History

In 1902, that proverbial pot of gold was found in Fairbanks by Italian immigrant Felix Pedro. The gold strike prompted Captain E.T. Barnette to build a trading post on the banks of the Chena River, and the gold rush to Fairbanks had begun. The town has grown over the last century but Fairbanks still has operating gold mines and embraces its colorful gold rush roots. Today, attractions and fun-filled events celebrate the historic quest for gold. See the largest public display of gold in the state at the university’s museum. Try your hand at gold panning. Air, Rail, Road & Ocean Just 140 air miles or 195 road miles below the Arctic Circle, Fairbanks is the farthest north city in Alaska and in the United States accessible by air, road and rail..

Air Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines offer year-round direct flights to and from Seattle. Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines typically offer direct service to and from other Lower 48 cities during the summer season. There are a variety of connecting flights that make getting to Fairbanks easy from anywhere in the U.S. Within the state, Alaska Airlines provides year-round direct service to and from Anchorage while regional air carriers, including Wright Air Service and Warbelow’s Air, provide frequent air service between Fairbanks and numerous Interior Alaska rural communities. Fairbanks is also home to more than 500 private small aircraft equipped with wheels, floats, skis and fat tires.

Rail All aboard! The Alaska Railroad provides year-round service to

Fairbanks. The daily summer train between Fairbanks and Anchorage is a magnificent 12-hour journey that stops in Talkeetna and Denali National Park. In the winter, the train offers service between Anchorage and Fairbanks, allowing passengers to experience remote winter in Alaska from the comfort of a warm railcar.

Road To get around town, rental cars and motorhomes, shuttles, taxis and ridesharing services are available in addition to the Fairbanks MACS Transit Bus System. Statewide shuttle companies provide daily transportation to many locations. Gravel road rental cars and campers are available from specific vendors for travel on the Dalton and Denali highways. Motor vehicle liability insurance is required, seat belts are mandatory, children under seven must ride in a child safety seat and helmets are required for motorcycle passengers.

Driving Fairbanks to Valdez—Alaska’s Adventure Corridor Alaska’s adventure corridor, with its rich history and spectacular scenery, stretches from Fairbanks along the Richardson Highway to Valdez and includes mighty rivers, mountains and historic roadhouses. Heading south from Fairbanks, visit with Santa Claus in North Pole, where “the spirit of Christmas lives year-round.”

Explore Delta Junction, the official end of the Alaska Highway, and Paxson at the crossroads of the Richardson and Denali highways with scenic vistas and wildlife sightings.

The Copper River with its world-renowned salmon and the Gulkana, Delta and Tanana rivers offer scenic recreation with rafting, fishing and jet boat tours. Glaciers are visible from the highway or by flight, kayak tour or cruise.

The Copper River Valley features the towns of Glennallen, Copper Center, Gulkana and Gakona rich with gold rush history and Alaska Native culture.

The final leg of the corridor ends in Valdez, established by turn-of-thecentury gold prospectors who headed north. Treks on Worthington and Valdez glaciers, Prince William Sound cruises, fishing and outdoor activities are highlights of this incredible trip south.

Downtown Fairbanks is a delightful blend of old and new—made up of historic buildings dating back to gold rush days, a vibrant contemporary art scene, an array of delicious eating and drinking establishments, museums, shops, the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center and, in the center of town, iconic Golden Heart Plaza.

Year-round, one can always find a variety of unexpected public artworks around town. Pipes (steam-heat vents) are painted, murals abound, colorful holiday lights and lit-up snowflakes adorn lampposts and more and sculptures—both permanent artworks and seasonal ice sculptures—beautify downtown streets and businesses.

Golden Heart Plaza named one of the “Great Places in America” “The original objective in building Golden Heart Plaza was to create a focal point of interest for Fairbanks, to construct a symbol of historical significance to remain as a statement of pride in the place where we live.

At its center stands the statue by Malcolm Alexander of the ‘Unknown First Family,’ a monument to the unwavering spirit of the families past, present and future who endure in this great land with pride and dignity,” said Julie Jones, Executive Director of Festival Fairbanks.

The American Planning Association’s “Great Places in America” program selects locales for having a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement and a vision for the future.

Taking Photographs in the Fairbanks Area

Any time of year is the right time to take photos in Fairbanks! In and around town you can snap selfie or just shoot the Antler Arch, Alaska mural, Love Alaska sign or the Golden Heart Plaza to name just a few hot spots. But honestly, here in Fairbanks the sky is the star of the show. Whether you are capturing the aurora borealis or the midnight sun here are some helpful tips. Don’t forget to show all your friends and family all the cool shots you got on your trip to Fairbanks, Alaska!

How to Photograph the Aurora Borealis

• Use a digital camera with manual settings and a solid tripod.

• Use a remote shutter to minimize camera shake.

• Bring extra camera batteries and a flashlight or headlamp and dress for extended times outdoors.

• When shooting stay up all night regardless of the KP index or cloudy weather as conditions change quickly.

• Remember intensity varies nightly, with the best displays from late evening to early morning hours.

• Locate a dark area with minimal light pollution.

• Point your camera at the northern sky and compose your medium distance foreground with a fixed object such as trees, hills or a cabin.

How to Photograph the Midnight Sun

• Shoot wide. For sunset photography, and landscape images wide, sweeping vistas are typically what you will want to capture.

• You can likely get by without using a tripod for sunset photography. However, as the sun goes down, your shutter speed could get too low to hand-hold the camera.

• After the sun goes down below the horizon, don’t leave right away. Keep watching the light and colors in the sky and keep shooting. The best color often happens after the sun has set. www.explorefairbanks.com

• A lower ISO setting usually means less grain (noise) and results in a cleaner image. Try to keep the ISO at the lowest setting, if possible.

• Try exposing for the brightest part of the scene, preventing areas around the sun from being washed out.

• If you can’t decide which orientation looks best, take both horizontal and vertical photographs. That way you can choose the best image at home.

• Make sure you clean your lens!
