Fairbanks is a world-famous aurora viewing destination because of its location directly under the “Auroral Oval” where northern lights activity is concentrated.

Spanning all four seasons and nine months of the year, Aurora Season in Fairbanks runs August 21 through April 21. Luckily, natural phenomena are unscathed by viruses and local businesses that specialize in chasing the aurora have developed ways to safely assist visitors in this pursuit.

World Famous Aurora Viewing Cross “See the northern lights” off your bucket list. Fairbanks’ renowned aurora viewing lures people from all over the world during the Aurora Season from August 21 to April 21. The River City’s location is ideal for northern lights viewing because it is directly under the “Auroral Oval”—a ring-shaped zone over the far north where aurora activity is concentrated. Additionally, low precipitation in Fairbanks contributes to consistently clear nights and low population density contributes to less light pollution which means darker skies. All combined, these factors make the Fairbanks region an outstanding destination for potential aurora viewing.

Drive to a nearby vantage point and wait for the northern lights to appear. You can also arrange to view them from a heated “aurorium” cabin or lodge, on a dog sled adventure, by snow cat tour or on a flight above the Arctic Circle. Winter activities that have recently been paired with aurora viewing include ice fishing and snowmobiling. Ask your hotel front desk if they offer a wake-up call when the northern lights are out. No guarantees, but the longer you’re here, the better your chances of seeing a great show.

Some aurora facts include: • Intensity varies daily, with the best displays from late evening to early morning hours.

• If you are actively out during the evening hours the aurora is visible an average of four out of five nights in the Fairbanks area when the sky is clear and dark enough.

• Auroras range in color; including shades of green, yellow, magenta, blue and red.

• Fairbanks weather is better for aurora viewing than coastal locations because there is less precipitation in Alaska’s Interior.

• A full moon does not obscure the aurora, it enhances the contrast between the ground and the sky.

Quick Tips for Photographing the Northern Lights Follow these tips to capture the dancing lights and you’ll be able to show the folks back home! You can also sign up for an aurora photography tour and learn from the experts.

• Locate a dark area with minimal • Manually set your camera on its highest light pollution. Alaska’s sled dogs will win your heart. Fairbanks’ four-legged athletes love to run and accessing Alaska’s state sport—dog mushing— has never been easier. There are tours at working kennels where you can meet the dogs and hear captivating tales from veteran mushers. Try a 30-minute ride in the basket or learn to drive your own team at a halfday mushing school. You can even fly to a remote lodge and “mush” your team on a guided tour. Get off the beaten path. Hit the gas and ride into Alaska’s spectacular winter wonderland. Snowmobiling, or “snowmachining” as it is most often referred to in Alaska, is one of the easiest ways to get into the wild areas surrounding Fairbanks.

Dazzling Ice Sculptures

Watch incredible artworks emerge from two-ton blocks of ice. In Fairbanks, ice art is not only remarkable, but commonplace during winter months with sculptures found all around town. The ice is harvested by forklift from local ponds and artists create brilliant sculptures with chain saws and specialized ice carving tools. There are ice museums and local ice events where you can frolic in playgrounds made of ice, skate on all-natural ice rinks and crawl through ice mazes.

The World Ice Art Championships, www.icealaska.org, held late February through March, is one of the largest ice art exhibitions in the world.

Another ice event in Fairbanks is the International Ice Art Classic, www.iceartpark.com, that also features numerous ice sculptures. Ice art sculptures vary every year and never cease to capture both the mind and the imagination.

Denali, pinnacle of the Alaska Range, is the tallest mountain in North America. Steeped in history and glorious to view, the mountain beckons like no other. So why not visit in winter? Outfitters offer both road and air expeditions to Denali National Park year round. Once in the Park you can choose to go on a hiking, snowshoeing or skiing excursion with a local tour operator or on your own. The educational Murie Science and Learning Center is planning on opening in some capacity this winter, offering advice on how to explore the park during winter months. Mid-February, the National Park Service plans on plowing the first 12.5 miles of the Denali Park Road. Cross the Arctic Circle

The Arctic Circle sparks the imagination like few other places on earth. This place that many dream about visiting is 195 road miles (315 Km) or 140 air miles (225 Km), north of Fairbanks. Tour with a guide via van, motor coach or plane up the Dalton Highway and cross over that invisible line. Hike across the tundra, see the mighty Yukon River and spot a caribou, muskox or arctic fox and scan the night sky for the aurora borealis. What’s the Weather Like?

Fairbanks’ low humidity, low precipitation and insignificant amount of wind make this subarctic environment surprisingly agreeable. Locals like to say it’s a clear, dry cold.

Here are some safety tips for your winter adventure: • Check the weather report or dial 844 for the local temperature while planning your day’s activities.

• Snow and ice are slippery. Wear footgear with traction, practice a slow shuffle and walk carefully.

• If renting a car, consider an all-wheel or fourwheel drive vehicle during winter months.

• Drive slowly, keep a safe distance from cars and go easy on your brakes while on snow and ice.

What’s Under There?

Underwear—long underwear to be exact. More commonly called “long johns,” they’re just one component of a simple layering system that will have you strolling through Fairbanks in warmth and comfort.

Traveling from a warmer climate?

Just drop into a local retailer and gear up with a few essentials, like a parka, snow pants and a good pair of boots. Layers make for the easiest change-ups. The weather can change quickly and so can you! Include a pair of long johns, long sleeved shirt, fleece jacket, boots, hat, mittens and a scarf in your wardrobe for the trip. Whatever the weather, you’ll be covered! Interior Alaska is an amazing place to explore in the winter and dressing for it is amazingly simple.
