The exhibition, which takes place between the 21st and 23rd November at the prestigious Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, bridges the gap between the buyers and designers, who will be showing and selling their work directly to the public. Alongside the Brighton Art Fair, MADE has established itself as a major event in the arts calendar of the South East, attracting thousands of visitors seeking to buy work direct from the artists. A huge variety of items will be on display to purchase, with beautiful and unique jewellery, textiles, glass, ceramics, furniture and much more across all prices ranges. Visitors are encouraged to contact artists and makers after the event to buy or commission work and establish a longer term on-going relationship. Celia Wilkinson "I don’t just paint what I see …it’s as much about what I feel; my paintings say what I can’t put into words.’"

A

rtist Celia Wilkinson creates abstract paintings which deconstruct the familiarity of landscapes into expressive, emotive works.

Celia’s technique involves her painting scenes from memory. With vivid strokes the landscape becomes a patchwork of colour, shape and texture; capturing the essence of a time and place rather than just a visual representation. This visceral approach moves Celia out of her comfort zone when she paints, and in turn gives the viewer

something to contemplate as they take in the finished piece. Celia has shown her paintings across the country including exhibitions in London, Isle of Wight, Newcastle and more recently the prestigious Brighton Art Fair which took place in September. FORGE CREATIVE

ounded in 2013, Sussex-based design workshop Forge Creative is the combined talents of furniture maker Josh Kennard and graphic designer Oliver Milne. Both driven to be their own boss, and with a passion for creativity, they decided to work together to see what could come out of the combination of their two skill sets. The duo’s mission statement is clear: To inspire their audience by always putting quality and creativity first. It is with this ethos that Forge creates quality hand-crafted furnishings, functional items and sculptural pieces with a rustic appeal, using natural and recycled materials such as wood, metal, concrete and glass combined with sleek, beautiful design.

With the outdoors as an inspirational starting point, there is a wonderful tactile quality in everything made by Forge; from the clean geometric lines of the Thirty/ Sixty solid wood iPad rest, to the ingenious character of the Forage Dining Table, which features a growing herb garden in the centre of the table surface. Each piece is made as a celebration of natural materials, with imperfect characteristics, colours and textures left as a main feature. Forge Creative also work to bespoke requests, designing projects for both interior and exterior spaces. NAVDEEP DHIMAN

A

graduate of Chelsea College of Art and Design, Navdeep Dhiman is a Mixed Media Textile Designer who uses resin, perspex, recycled card and paper to create unique pieces of decorative and wearable art.

Working with these materials allows Navdeep to experiment with texture, pigmentation, pattern and shape, using resin as a base to embed arrangements made from thread, hand-dyed plastic and beads. These resin pieces are used to create hanging installations, single hangings, necklaces, brooches, boxes, coasters and key rings. Navdeep’s distinctive work is always evolving to include new combinations of colours, shapes and patterns, which draw inspiration from nature, with simplified geometric leafy marks and cut-outs and floral repeats. These designs can also be found digitally on wrapping paper and cards, which mix digital printing with laser cut embellishments. ANNIE McCABE

F

rom her garden studio in Brighton, artist Annie McCabe hand crafts beautiful glass beads which she combines with silver and other complementary materials to create unique pieces of wearable jewellery.

Each one of Annie’s vibrantly coloured beads is individually made by hand using techniques developed in Murano, Italy, in the 14th Century. This approach, called lampworking, involves winding molten glass around a steel mandrel to create the hole. Once the beads are created they are made into stunning pendants, earrings and intricate statement necklaces and bracelets, finished off with handmade silver findings. As well as crafting her own designs, Annie is available to create bespoke commissioned pieces. For those wanting to try their hand at making their own beads, Annie offers tuition from her studio at a beginner and improver level. Courses start at £50 for a two hour session and include all of the tools and glass you will need. Annie will also be appearing at MADE, 21st - 23rd November, at the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange. LIFESTYLE

Winter Care...

A

s the nights draw in and we are all feeling a little bit gloomy, it is a good exercise to take stock and decide to “do it differently” this Autumn/Winter.

Personally I’m someone who loves this time of year as it feels like new beginnings to me (I guess it’s engrained into us that new school year feeling). I’m a lover of winter clothes, of scrumptious stews, roast dinners, winter TV shows that you can curl up in front of and just chill. It seems to surprise many people my enjoyment of this time of year but to me, it’s the change in seasons in this country that make it I know that there is also the dark evenings, the run up to Christmas which can be stressful, feeling stuck indoors etc. but, how would it make you feel to instead of dreading winter to embrace it? A time for brisk walks yes, you might get cold and wet but how lovely to come home and get toasty and have that wonderful tingly glow? Fuel your body, eat substantial healthy meals concentrating on things that warm & nourish your body. Take long hot baths, get the candles out and relax, enjoy the necessity of being indoors rather than acting against it.

Plan some different outdoor activities with the family – we have Bonfire Night to look forward to, walks in the woods, seaside walks with crashing waves and a sense of invigoration. Seize the moments of good weather and act spontaneously knowing that you can go home and tuck up afterwards. Take time to plan Spring treats – where are you going to go, what are you going to do differently in the New Year to continue all the hard work you’ve put in this year to enable your wellbeing? Maybe deciding to enjoy your winter this year will remove that sense of dread, after all, it makes it a long one if we start counting down the days until the clocks go forward again? Give yourself permission to rest, refuel, recuperate, rebuild and enjoy the pleasures of winter rather than avoiding it. Enjoy your home and your time, animals hibernate for a reason – why shouldn’t we? Kate Tilston Life Coach - www.Katetilston.co.uk

HEALTH

Putting the SQUEEZE on Juice diets

T

here has been a lot of talk in the media recently about the “juice diet”, which is purported to trigger a loss of 7lb in as many days. As the name suggests, the diet involves consuming nothing but fruit and vegetable juices for a set period, usually around a week. On the face of it, the diet sounds fairly healthy. We all know the importance of consuming at least five portions of fruit and veg a day, so the juice diet (which uses only freshly squeezed fruits and vegetables) will easily allow somebody to exceed their quota. Many of us do not drink enough fluids, so the juice diet would certainly help maintain better hydration. Fruits and vegetables provide a valuable source of vitamins and minerals, so our bodies would get more than enough of certain essential nutrients required for good health. Those with high cholesterol may feel motivated to try the juice diet, as studies have shown that it can lower cholesterol levels. So what’s the catch? Firstly, although you may initially see a dramatic response to weight loss, your body will soon go into starvation mode, lowering your metabolism so that fewer calories are burned at rest. This means that not only does it become harder to lose weight, you will gain weight

even more easily once the diet ends, because your body’s energy requirements have been lowered. Secondly, fruits and vegetables do not provide the full range of vitamins and minerals found in a balanced diet. You may have excess intake of some, but you will become deficient in others unless you supplement them. Salt deficiency can occur due to the low sodium content of most fruits and vegetables and two main macronutrients – proteins and fats – are severely limited. Also, because the fruits and vegetables are juiced, there is very little fibre in the diet, which could lead to bowel problems. Finally, there is doubt over whether such fasting diets have any lasting benefit. For example, the lowered cholesterol seen in studies returned to previous levels within a week of stopping the diet. To permanently achieve a healthy weight and see long-term health benefits, a balanced diet with sensible portion sizes and an increase in physical activity really is the best way to do it – and you’ll still get to consume plenty of delicious fruit and veg every day!
