VEGFEST
28 – 29th March | Brighton Centre, Brighton

egfest continues to be one of the most popular culinary events in Brighton’s annual calendar, after 8 successful years which have seen thousands of people visit the two day event. This year Vegfest moves home from Hove to the Brighton Centre for its biggest year yet celebrating all things vegan and vegetarian. On the 28th and 29th of March over 150 stalls will fill the centre with food, bodycare products, clothes, accessories, gifts and campaign groups, plus15 caterers showcasing some of the best vegan food anywhere in the country as part of the Food Village. Expect plenty of chances to try and buy delicious vegan foods, from raw superfoods to cheeses and chocolates, you’ll find a mouth-watering array of products to choose from. Talks and demonstrations will be taking place throughout both days, giving inspiration and information on living a nutritional, healthy vegan lifestyle; with a wide variety of speakers such as Ms Cupcake who will be offering tips on how to replace animal products in your baking, and Jessica Laura; a vegan beauty and skincare
expert. Cookery demonstrations will include raw vegan chocolate brownies and cooking elegant and decadent raw food for entertaining. Vegfest also offers some more unexpected events for visitors, such as a Veggievision speed dating session where like-minded vegetarians and vegans can mingle for friendship and love. This year Vegfest is also host to the Vegan Comedy Festival; the first of its kind in the UK featuring dozens of vegan comedians. Vegfest welcomes people of all ages, and with a children’s entertainment area hosting workshops, cooking demos and games, the whole family can visit for a fun and informative day out. Tickets for the event are just £5 per day or £8 for a weekend ticket. Advance tickets are available to purchase online, with all tickets buy one get one free until February 28th, and buy one get one half price thereafter until March 21st. Jessica Zoob
J
essica Zoob is an internationally collected artist living and working in Lewes creating breathtaking contemporary paintings.
Working mainly in oil and acrylic, Zoob’s canvases have a lush, fresh quality, drawing the viewer in with layers of expressive colours and textures. Described by the artist as ‘evocative landscapes’, many of the paintings are created by a process of building up and scraping back layers of paint to create dreamlike, otherworldly scenes. Techniques such as pouring liquid glazes directly onto the canvas gives a spontaneity to the work, adding a sense of sentient life and organic movement. Jessica has been the featured contemporary artist at
London Design Week and has exhibited regularly in and around London, with works in private collections worldwide. Last year she was awarded ‘Best British Pattern’ at the Elle Decoration British Design Awards for her painting Big Smile, from her Desire Collection of wall coverings and textiles in collaboration with Romo Black Edition. MIA UNDERWOOD

righton based artist Mia Underwood creates multimedia drawings, paintings and soft sculptures inspired by the natural world, woodland creatures and mysterious folk tales.
Since completing a BA degree in Graphic and Media Design at London College of Printing, Mia has been continuously experimented with new techniques; from painting on wood with gold leaf, to digital illustration, working with spray paints and even making three dimensional needle felted animals. Mia was taught to draw and paint by her father, world-known fine artist George Underwood. His encouragement introduced her to an incredible collection of artists, opening her mind to the wonderful world of creation through imagination. Janie Ranger
A
n obsession with mark making has always been a major influence in the work of artist Janie Ranger, whose paintings convey notions of death, decay, reflections and
memories.
Inspired by her large collection of memorabilia and organic detritus, Ranger is currently working on a series of ‘botanical’ paintings created largely from her own imagination; combining abstract and representational elements that are layered, erased and reconfigured to create dream-like scenes that shift between the real and the imagined.
Having trained both in Fashion and Textiles as well as Fine Art, it is clear to see that Ranger’s creative work still encompasses all of these disciplines. Her real passion, however, is working on or with paper, and as an artist Ranger has exhibited across the country, including last year’s Brighton Art Fair and at the Royal Albert Hall. janieranger@googlemail.com janieranger.com

ony Bowall is an award winning Hove based photographer who has been producing images of the city for over ten years.
Bowall has been taking photographs since 1982 and holds the FRPS, the Highest Distinction from the Royal Photographic Society. ollowing the success of our Artist Profile series, we’re very excited to be launching our new sister publication Inside Artists.
The magazine will showcase the most talented artists from across the whole of the UK as an accessible means to unite stunning works of art with industry leaders and art lovers alike. We’ve worked hard to create our vision of a publication that is as much for the artists as for the readers. Featured artist D.O.M. creates vivid portraits of women from her studio in Scotland. Little Steps... BIG result

f you are anything like me and many other people out there, you probably have an ongoing ‘to do’ list which either works marvelously well for you or causes you immense anxiety.

And if you are one of those people with said list, it is highly likely that you also set out some goals or resolutions that you want to achieve in the forthcoming year.
What about all the other things you achieved last year which when you look at on an individual basis might seem tiny? Maybe you didn’t spend so much time on Facebook, or you managed a date night with your partner? Baked a cake, cleared out your wardrobe? I bet you did LOTS of little things that made a difference in your life in 2014 and lets face it, it’s all the little things clubbed together that make up your life.
Those of you who know me or read my articles will know that I am not a fan of New Year resolutions as I believe it is a particularly hard time of year to motivate yourself when money is tight, the weather’s rubbish and you’ve just over indulged at Christmas… but that’s another article/conversation. I have been talking to several new clients this week who have come to me with 5 goals they wish to achieve, and as per normal, they are quite big ones: to lose 2 stone in weight, to start writing a book, to sort out their iPod library of 15,000 songs etc. etc. and it won’t surprise you that these very goals were on the same lists last year.
By all means chose to change some of the biggies but get some help and support to do so. Get a plan in place and tackle things one at a time. Don’t forget, we are so much more than diets and to do lists. Go ahead and think BIG, make those plans, dream those dreams but also give yourself a large pat on the back for all the incidental things that you will do that will go into making 2015 possible not only to exist, but to live! Running: It’s Not All Legwork!
A
re you taking part in this year’s Brighton Marathon? I was fortunate enough to be part of the medical team at the finish line a couple of years ago; it gave me great insight into the areas of the body that tend to take the most strain during a marathon. The most common problem I saw was muscle cramps. Most of us would assume the leg muscles would be the obvious place to experience cramps after a marathon – and they probably accounted for around two thirds of the cases I saw – but what might surprise you is that the low back was the second most common area I treated. The low back is crucial in propelling us forward during walking and running. A combination of twisting and bending of the spine drives one side of the pelvis forward, the other side backward, encouraging the legs to swing in the same direction. In fact, it has been suggested that this spinal movement is more important in walking and running than the legs themselves. It may sound odd but consider those disabled athletes that run on prosthetic legs with very little difference in performance to ablebodied runners. Britain’s gold medal-winning Richard
Whitehead, whose prosthetic legs do not even have flexible knees, is a great example! All that propulsion has to come from the hips and pelvis, which in turn are driven by powerful muscles in the low back. Previously I have talked about leg stretches and they should remain an important part of your training regime – but don’t neglect your low back! A simple exercise to mobilise your lumbar spine is to lie on the floor, flat on your back. Bend your knees up so that your feet are flat on the floor with your heels and knees together. Keeping the heels and knees together, allow your legs to roll over to one side, as far as they comfortably want to go under their own weight – don’t force them! Relax into the twist and hold for a few seconds, return to neutral and repeat in the other direction. Just a few reps each time you warm up will help improve flexibility in the low back and should contribute to a more comfortable marathon. After running, hold the twist for thirty seconds each side to stretch out the back muscles and help them recover. Best of luck to all the Brighton Marathon runners!
