02 COVER STORY: BONNY

‘We look forward to a good season and focus on fabric, fit & finishing’

Harsh Jain Director

Chetan Dharod Director “The market for boy’s ethnic wear has grown exponentially in recent years. Earlier it was dominated by western wear segment but the recent growth in ethnic wear has balanced scales, with both segments contributing equally to the sector’s growth. There is a huge change in both consumer’s and retailer’s perceptive as they are demanding ethnic wear and retailers are selling them.”

ounded in 2004, Bonny Creation makes and supplies an impeccable assortment of ethnic, Indo-western and jacket suits for boys. The company designs and manufactures garments using skin friendly fabrics. The products are widely acclaimed for their bright colors, sophisticated look, excellent tear strength, pleasing designs, skin-friendly nature and neat stitching. With the aim of manufacturing flawless products, Bonny constructed a world-class infrastructure in Mumbai. It has various sub-units that help in meeting bulk consignments within scheduled time frame. The brand is present in leading MBOs of 14

to 15 states, Chetan Dharod, Director, speaks about the company and their future plans.

Tell us about the boy’s ethnic wear market in India? The market for boy’s ethnic wear has grown exponentially in recent years. Earlier it was dominated by western wear segment but recent growth in ethnic wear has balanced scales, with both segments contributing equally to the sector’s growth. There is a huge change in both consumer’s and retailer’s perceptive as they are demanding ethnic wear and retailers are selling them. This is contrary to the practice 10 years ago, when neither the retailer nor the consumer

wear. We expect 20 per cent growth this year. Earlier, demand for ethnic wear was restricted to special occasions and seasons but now they are in demand all around the year. The quality of our fabrics differs in low priced garments. Garments in the range Rs 1,200 to Rs 5,000 sell more than those priced at Rs 7,000. We plan to expand into large format business within a year. We do not have an online presence as online is not suitable for ethnic clothing.

What factors influence the sale of your garments?

Our sale is largely influenced by the decisions made by parents in selecting their kids’ garments. About 70 per cent purchase in kids’ clothing in India is still handled by parents.

Are you planning to make any additions to your existing portfolio?  Founded in 2004  Offers ethnic, Indo-Western and jacket suits for boys  Is present in all leading MBOs in 15 states of India  Focus on boys in the age group 0-14 years  Nearly 70 per cent of sales is generated by suits and blazers  The in-house design team conceptulises season’s offerings  Uses vibrant printed material for coat suits  Suits are made of imported fabrics  Is in the process of consolidating the brand wished to deal in ethnic wear. Stocks were limited with sellers since demand was low. Today, there is a complete transformation in the way ethnic wear segment is handled, making it almost indispensable for retailers.

Our fabrics are sourced from both India and abroad. We have an in house design team which undertakes researches and surveys, to launch a new collection. Our USP is focus on quality and design.

Tell us something about your product range.

How competitively are your products priced?

We mainly deal with ethnic wear. Our product basket comprises coat suits, blazers, Indo-western and jacket suits. We cater to boys 0 to 14 years. Our jackets are made of velvet. We use vibrant printed material for coat suits. Our suits are made of imported fabrics. Garments are made with regular fittings and western cuts. They have a lot of handwork on them. For garments made in Indo-western styles, we use silk, brocade and velvet. They have little embroidery work and are known for their finishing and western cuts. Our winter collection is available in 12 different colors. These include navy blue, wine and foam. The suits in this collection have African cuts while sherwanis have closed neck.

Ethnic wear is largely worn for occasions. This is the time when people don’t mind spending on clothes, especially for kids. Since we are a quality-oriented brand, we have never faced any price issues. Our products, priced between Rs 2,200 to Rs 6,000, offer complete value for money. They cater to every class and segment. There were times when people avoided spending money on kids’ clothing but now it’s completely opposite. Today, parents go out of their way to spend on their kids’ clothes.

Where do you source your fabrics from?

What are your expectations from the upcoming season? We look forward to a good season and focus on the fabric, fit and finishing of our garments. Nearly 70 per cent of our sales are generated from suits and blazers; while the remaining 30 per cent is from Indo-Western

We are in the process of consolidating our brand and do not plan to make any new additions to our existing portfolio. Although an increase in production is on the cards, we do not aim to expand our retail operations.

Which of the two; domestic or international markets do you prefer?

We find the domestic market promising, though we are also into exports. The domestic market is driven by factors such as population, market maturity, awareness among people of what they should wear and what they shouldn’t.

What challenges do you face in this sector? One of the major challenges that the brand faces is form production side. Increasing employment opportunities in remote areas create labor issues in the apparel industry. As far as rising number of brands in the segment are concerned, we keep a positive outlook on that. Healthy competition leads to more opportunities.

Elaborate on your retail spread. We are present in all leading MBOs in around 14 to 15 states. Since we don’t find online retail appealing, it may take some time for us to be available through this channel. “We look forward to a good season and focus on the fabric, fit and finishing of our garments.
