WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT GENERATOR SAFETY
Find us on
During hurricane season, people often consider installing generators in their homes or businesses. While they can serve a purpose during storms, there are several things you should know to keep everyone safe.
TIPS FOR SAFE GENERATOR USE • Never connect a generator directly to your home's wiring. • Never plug an electric portable generator in a regular household outlet. • Use proper electrical cords. • Make sure the generator is always properly grounded. • Carefully read and follow all instructions and safety precautions. • Follow local, state, and national fire and electrical codes. • Never operate indoors — Protect yourself from carbon monoxide poisoning. • Never fuel a generator while it is operating. • Always have a fire extinguisher nearby.
We strongly recommend a licensed electrician install the equipment necessary to safely connect emergency portable generators.
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?
If a generator is not properly installed with an appropriate transfer switch, backfeeding can occur. Backfeeding is when power flows back into the wiring, which could be hazardous or even deadly for utility workers.
