THE MESSENGER

A Publication for North Arkansas Electric Cooperative Members

Scholarship applications due April 1

The North Arkansas Electric Cooperative (NAEC) member-funded Operation Round Up® program awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to local graduating high school seniors each year.

In 2024, 15 students were awarded $1,000 scholarships, and three students were awarded $4,000 scholarships to be disbursed in $1,000 installments for up to four years.

NAEC is accepting applications for the 2025-2026 scholarship program. The application is available at naeci.com or through high school counselors’ offices.

Applicants must mail or deliver the typed application to NAEC by April 1. They must include a transcript and two letters of recommendation — with at least one from a nonschool employee who is not a relative.

To be eligible for the scholarship, high school seniors must graduate at the end of the 2025 school year, and their parents or legal guardians must be NAEC members. Applicants also must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale through the first semester of senior year.

The scholarship must be used to attend an accredited institute of higher learning on a full-time basis. For more information, please contact Tori Moss, NAEC marketing and communications director, at tmoss@naeci.com or (870) 895-6210.

Members can help fund future scholarships by enrolling their accounts in Operation Round Up. Volunteers allow their electric bills to be "rounded up" to the next dollar each month. Call (870) 8953221 to join today!

Galatia Substation online

North Arkansas Electric Cooperative personnel dedicate the new Galatia Substation and transmission line in the Norfork area Jan. 20. The substation is energized and serving 750 member accounts on 85 miles of distribution line that previously were served by the Norfork Substation. With the Norfork, Culp and Lone Rock areas having grown in recent years as far as load, this new substation gives NAEC greater flexibility during normal operations and outage situations. The Galatia Substation project included a new 2.8-mile transmission line that connects the substation to a transmission line between the co-op’s Norfork and Pineville substations. Additional distribution lines will be built out of Galatia Substation in the coming months to divide the existing distribution system. Galatia is NAEC’s 30th substation.

Up-to-date contact info important

Sending an automated call when your home is going to be part of a planned outage or mailing a capital credits check are only two of the many reasons why NAEC might need to contact you.

It’s important to keep a current mailing address and at least one phone number and email on file with NAEC. Current contact information can allow you to report an outage faster if using our automated system and also ensures you receive any alerts or reminders that you wanted via text, email, voice alert or push notification. (To see the available alerts and reminders for payments, outages, etc., log in to your account at naeci.com or on the NAEC app.)

To update or check your contact information on file, call (870) 895-3221 or visit an NAEC office during regular business hours or submit information via the form at naeci.com/contact-naec.

ARE YOU STORM READY?

Follow these safety and preparation tips during spring and summer storm season.

Be Prepared.

• Create an emergency kit with power outage essentials: batteries, power banks, flashlights, non-perishable foods, water, medical supplies and prescriptions.

• Develop an emergency family plan with meeting points and communication methods. Share your plan with all family members.

• Monitor weather for important updates that could impact your emergency plan.

Stay Safe.

• Ensure a safe shelter. Stay away from windows and doors. In tornadoes, move to a basement or an interior room without windows.

• Use portable generators safely: operate outdoors in well-ventilated areas, place on a flat, dry surface, do not overload and always read the operating manual before use.

• Severe storms can bring down tree limbs and power lines. If you encounter a downed line, stay back. Always assume a downed line is live and dangerous.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY TIP OF THE MONTH

March is an ideal time to service your home cooling system, ensuring it runs efficiently when the heat of summer arrives. Routine maintenance, such as cleaning or replacing filters, checking refrigerant levels and inspecting parts, can improve your system’s energy efficiency and lower your energy bills. Addressing potential issues early can avoid costly emergency repairs and extend the unit’s lifespan. Scheduling service in the spring helps you beat the peak-season rush.
