Grant to Ogeechee Riverkeeper

The following article was written and submitted by Meaghan Gerard, Ogeechee Riverkeeper Communications and Administrative Director.

OOgeechee Riverkeeper (ORK) is pleased to receive a grant from Canoochee EMC to support its comprehensive water quality monitoring program. ORK’s mission is to protect, preserve and improve the water quality in the Ogeechee River basin, which includes more than 5,500 square miles across 21 Georgia counties. ORK also offers education opportunities, hosts events and participates in coalitions to promote clean water efforts in the region.

Despite a largely rural landscape, this region of Georgia is experiencing rapid increased development pressure from population growth, water withdrawals and wastewater discharges. Many pressures are causing dramatic changes in water quality and quantity, threatening serious ecological decline by shifting wildlife and fisheries populations.

Canoochee EMC Member Services Manager Kyle Durrence (left) presents a check to Ogeechee Riverkeeper Executive Director Damon Mullis.

“When you’re out on the river, you feel enveloped in wildness,” says Damon Mullis, Ogeechee Riverkeeper and Executive Director. “It’s hard to find those places that make

you feel like you’re out in the wild. It makes it even more important to protect it, because these things are becoming rarer.”

The grant from Canoochee EMC will fund equipment and supplies to measure water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and specific conductance to monitor the health of our waterways, including the Canoochee River.

All of the data collected from ORK’s sampling is publicly available online at www.knowyourriver.com, a website where citizens can get information on the water quality in their area. Furthermore, ORK shares monitoring results with stakeholders, agencies, media and municipalities as needed.

ORK also offers the annual Canoochee Paddle Race, citizen science programs, local ordinance updates, an annual photography contest, environmental blog posts, organized cleanups and more. To learn more, visit www. ogeecheeriverkeeper.org.

Have a Safe Father’s Day

Keep Father’s Day happy by keeping dad safe, even as he tries out his new electric gifts. Warn your dad that home repairs can be a dangerous undertaking when electricity gets involved, so he needs to use care with electrical equipment and steer clear of power lines.

A bit of common sense and caution while working outside this spring and summer can keep everyone safe. Some tips:

• A ladder—even a wooden one—can cause a fatal shock if it touches a power line.

• Inspect power tools and cords for frayed or broken wires and cracked cases before plugging them in.

• Unplug outdoor tools and appliances when you’re not using them. Store them out of reach of children.

• Wait for things to dry off before working outdoors after it rains.

Set the A/C at 78 Degrees

Even damp grass can be dangerous when using electricity.

• When carrying ladders, aluminum siding, poles and other long objects, don’t forget to look up. More than 20% of people who die in electricityrelated home repair accidents have touched a power line with a ladder or building material.

• Keep your projects at least 10 feet away from power lines.

TThe U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and most electric utilities recommend you set your thermostat at 78 degrees during the summer.

Before you leave for work, crank it up to 85 degrees, and before you turn in for the night, nudge it up to 82 degrees, the DOE recommends.

If that sounds a bit toasty for summertime, consider inching your thermostat up 1 degree at a time rather than all at once if you usually keep yours set at 72 in the summer—as most Americans do.

And consider replacing a manual thermostat with a programmable model so the settings will change automatically.
