Big sound Country superstar Clay Walker performs at Tri-County Fair WINNEMUCCA Winnemucca will welcome country music superstar Clay Walker on Saturday, Aug. 31, to the Winnemucca Event Center. The big-name concert will headline this year’s Tri-County Fair & Stampede; tickets are on sale at www.winnemucca.com. This is the second year the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority has sponsored a Labor Day concert for local residents. Last year, country music singer Jake Owen played for local crowds; WCVA Director Kim Petersen is banking that Walker will have the same draw. “We really appreciated the community’s support last year for the Jake Owen concert,” he said, “and we’re hoping to see the same outpouring for this year’s event.” Certain artists just seem to have an innate sense of what it takes to please an audience. Clay Walker is one of those artists. Whether on stage or in the recording studio, Clay never gives less than a hundred percent, and it’s that kind of dedicated work

ethic combined with God-given talent that have made him one of the most successful country acts of the past decade. He first topped the Billboard chart with “What’s It to You?” and “Live Until I Die.” Since then he’s driven 31 titles to the top. Clay Walker has enjoyed his share of success at the cash registers and has been one of the busiest artists on the road. He’s scored four platinum-selling albums, signifying sales of a million units, and two gold albums, discs that sold over 500,000 units. Rising country music star Krystal Keith will open for Clay Walker. Krystal, the daughter of famed country music star Toby Keith, recently released her first album, a work critics say reveals a breadth that is rarely seen on debut efforts. Tickets to see Clay Walker and Krystal Keith live are now available at www.winnemucca.com. Some reserved seating is available on the concert floor; other seats are available in the mezzanine and bleacher areas of the indoor event center. “We encourage people to come early for the rodeo and concert and enjoy the fair exhibits, food and to find a good parking space,” said Petersen. He added, “You won’t want to miss this show,” he said. “It’s going to be a great night.”

Battle Mountain Quilt Guild prepares to hold 6th quilt show BATTLE MOUNTAIN By Jan Ehlert, Special to INN
E
very other year the Battle Mountain Quilt Guild hosts a very colorful and professional quilt show in Battle Mountain. On the opposing years the guild treats themselves to a quilting weekend workshop retreat where they actually hire a professional well known quilter to come and teach them some new tricks of the trade. The new techniques learned are always available to see at the guilds’ every other year show. This year the show will take place at the Battle Mountain Civic Center Aug. 3-4 — with hours of Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The kitchen will be set up with lunch, snacks, and beverages for purchase. There will be quilting vendors from all over Nevada and some surrounding states. The guild will have their finest work on display for guests to admire and the remaining space in the civic center will be filled with vendors selling sewing machines, fat quarters, thread, quilting kits, and already quilted items. This is a great event to do some early holiday shopping for the person you don’t know what to buy for — your get them a one-of-a-kind handmade item! Every year that they have a quilt show the Battle Mountain Quilt Guild features two very special quilting members and in 2011 they featured Coxie Roberts and Salle Lemaire. They had their very own display of beautiful items they both had quilted over the years for friends and family. Quilters tell stories with their work and they do it very skillfully. This year there will be two new quilters featured. The 2013 “How the West was Warmed Quilt Show” is a state of the art event featuring some of the most beautifully hand and machine quilted items that can be made and most of the exhibits are made in Battle Mountain. The event is $5 per adult and $3 for children over 5 years of age. The event always draws locals and guests from surrounding areas of Battle Mountain. The talent on exhibit is always amazing. 8 | Inside Northern Nevada | AUGUST 2013

FAIR TIME!
Plans underway for fun-packed Tri-County Fair and Stampede WINNEMUCCA
A
round these parts, Labor Day means just one thing: it’s time for a fabulous weekend dedicated to some serious, end-of-summer fun. “We really have planned a fun weekend,” said Darrel Field, chairman of this year’s Tri-County Fair Board. Field said the 2013 Fair not only will provide area residents with the opportunity to display their talents, but the weekend also will serve up great entertainment, food and plenty of good times. Field said, “There are so many things to do, and the majority of them are free. We specifically planned this year so it could be a really fun end-ofsummer celebration.” In addition to all the regular fair favorites, this year will see the return of the 92nd annual Labor Day Rodeo on Saturday, August 31, in the main arena. This year, the PRCA sanctioned rodeo will deliver more money, more cowboys and more action! Come see why this is Nevada’s oldest continuous rodeo. Sunday, Sept. 1, the TriCounty Fair & Stampede will debut Truck & Truck Pulls. This head pounding, drive-line snapping, mega-pulling bonanza will be a great addition to this area’s favorite weekend. Anyone concerned about their hearing should bring ear plugs, though, because it’s going to be loud! On Friday, August 30, don’t miss the sixth annual “Pig Wrestling Contest” in the main arena at the Winnemucca Events Complex. The event will feature community teams getting “down and dirty” for charity. All proceeds are donated to local

non-profit organizations chosen by the first- and second-place teams. The Fair also has rounded up some very entertaining—and free—shows. There will be plenty of contests, food, vendors, attractions and events like the Great Basin Challenge and the Western Art Roundup. Plus, Schoeppner Shows Carnival will provide this year’s spin-tillyou’re-queasy fun from Thursday through Sunday. The annual Labor Day Parade will kick things off Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. The parade, which is sponsored by the Agricultural District No. 3, has been a Humboldt County mainstay for 92 years. This year’s theme is “Mining, Industry & Agriculture.” Saturday night will welcome country music superstar Clay Walker to the indoor event center. Rising country music star Krystal Keith, the daughter of Toby Keith, will open for Walker. Together, the two will put on

ifties Fever, northern Nevada’s hottest classic car fest, is throwing open the door and laying out the welcome mat.
This year’s 21st annual celebration of those fabulous fifties is open to all vehicles, with 10 classes and a whole slate of awards just for modern cars. Together, says Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority Marketing and Special Events Coordinator Darrel Field, the classics and the moderns will make for one spectacular event. Fifties Fever originated as the Winnemucca branch of Reno’s hugely successful Hot August Nights. Fifteen years ago, as Winnemucca’s event came into its own, local organizers split from Hot August Nights to form Fifties Fever— and Winnemucca’s weekend hasn’t

Rock 'til you drop in Wendover with two big weekend concerts WENDOVER
H
eadbanging road ragers Tesla storm into the Wendover Concert Hall on Saturday, Aug. 10 for a 7 p.m. (MST) show.
Then the next weekend the classic hairband Whitesnake takes the stage for an Aug. 17 performance. Tickets for the Tesla show start at just $10; and Whitesnake seats can be had starting at $20. Tesla was formed in 1984 in California, and their music fit well with the blasting sound of the 80s glam bands, but was more bluesy and lyrics dealt with other themes than just the usual, girls, alcohol and violence. Silver ingot now on display at Nevada State Museum ECAC names McClure-Porter CARSON CITY A 1,000 ounce bar of silver mined from 4,000 tons of Nevada ore is a rarity by far — but visitors to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City can catch a glimpse of the spectacular ingot now on display in preparation for the state’s 150th birthday party. Site of the historic U.S. Mint, the museum still operates the original Coin Press No. 1 on the last Friday of each month. When the bar is melted into 1000 1-ounce round medallions, the celebrated press will stamp commemorative editions, with the
“CC” mint mark, honoring the state’s sesquicentennial which is Nevada Day, 2014. Coeur Rochester mining officials of Lovelock donated the 60-pound bar, and the Northwest Territory Mint in Dayton will melt the ingot to produce the medallions. Sales will help fund the NV150 events and the price will be determined by the commission that oversees them. The museum is at 600 N. Carson St. and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday — Sunday. For more information call (775) 687-4810.

The event, which is being held at the Orchard and Kingston Pond, is being hosted by the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department and the new Kingston Fire

There will be more than 25 volunteers helping to host the event, he added. Aug. 2 will begin with a Kingston Open House that will last into the evening and participating Kingston businesses will offer drink and food specials. Ward said he is looking for items to be donated for the auctions, raffles and bingo. Anyone who would like to donate is asked to call Ward at (775) 9641034. One of the auction items will include a mountain lion pedestal mount, valued at $2,000. There will be a general raffle with a tablet, such as an iPad, as the main prize along with other prizes that Ward is hoping people will mostly donate. There will be a gun raffle for a Stag Arms AR-15 rifle, valued at more than $1,000, and a Rossi Circuit Judge, valued at $700, both purchased by the fire department. The horseshoe tournament will feature cash prizes. The barbecue lunch will start at noon and consists of tri-tip beef, various salads, desserts and a nonalcholic beverage. It will cost $10 a plate with the drink included. Alcoholic beverages can be purchased separately. There will be a bounce house for the kids and numerous kids games, Ward said. There will also be a rubber duck race for kids and adults, a wheelbarrow race for the adults and a watermelon eating contest for all ages. Select vendors have also been invited to sell goods at the event to include fresh produce from Fallon, handmade jewelry, baked goods and custom clothing items. It will start at the fire house and hit three check points before it ends at Zach’s Lucky Spur Saloon. Entrants must check in by 3 p.m. for their final cards. It will go up Kingston Canyon and over the summit at which point riders can either choose the easy route or the hard route. The fee is $40 per entrant. The $40

WINE & SPIRITS TASTING NOTES
Trinchero Family Estates going strong for 65 years The
WINE GUYS
WINE WORDS
'On the Lees' Lees are the "gunk" that settles out of wine during the fermentation process. These dead yeast cells and other particles are carried to the bottom of the vat during the fining process. Usually, winemakers transfer their wine off these sediments, but occasionally they choose not to do so. Wines left to age "on the lees (or in French sur lie) are given a distinctly yeasty aroma and taste — which after aging gives additional flavor and character.

Company markets more than two dozen brands Family owned Trinchero Family Estates was founded in 1948 with the establishment of the Sutter Home brand. Today this wine making behemoth is the home of 27 more wine brands including Joel Gott, Sea Glass, the ubiquitous Ménage a` Trois as well as Napa Cellars and Folie a` Deux. We recently met with Napa Cellars and Folie a` Deux winemaker Joe Shirley to taste his wines and learn first-hand how he goes about creating his wines. Joe joined Trinchero in 1999 and has made the Folie a` Deux wines since 2003 and Napa Cellars wines since 2007. Joe feels he has a personal connection with the Napa Cellars wines, which are all made from Napa Valley fruit, because he grew up in Napa Valley and “has a personal under36 | Inside Northern Nevada | AUGUST 2013
standing of what Napa is good at." Joe said he believes “you can successfully grow any grape in the valley” which is 2 to 5 miles wide and about 20 miles long. Roughly 50 percent of Napa Valley is planted in cabernet sauvignon due to the expensive cost of suitable vineyard land. Joe said his wine making goals were to ”provide clean, balanced, not heavily stylized wines." He further commented that “the Napa Valley fruit is very good and is what should show”. We were very favorably impressed with the price value ratio of both of these brands, and believe consumers
would be wise to seek them out. Following are our favorite Napa Cellars wines:
Napa Cellars Chardonnay Napa Valley 2011 ($16).This very nice chardonnay is aged in 25 percent new French oak and displays a pear/apple nose and flavors with a hint of yeast from the 5 months of aging on the lees.
Napa Cellars Merlot Napa Valley 2010 ($19). From the Oak Knoll area, this merlot has a nice cherry nose and flavors with a hint of chocolate. This wine creates a big impression in the mouth that is complex and pleasing. Finishes with a hint of oak. Delicious!
sic well-priced Napa Valley zinfandel. Blended with 10 percent petite sirah, this wine offers a pleasant berry fruit nose with a blast of berry fruit in the mouth. Well balanced, this beauty would make a fine table wine for summer outdoor eating. Interestingly Joe explained that zinfandel grapes ripen unevenly and you can have raisins and green grapes on the same grape vines. We also tasted the Folie a` Deux wine that Joe makes from Sonoma County grapes and really liked the following selections:
Folie a` Deux Chardonnay Russian River Valley Sonoma County 2011 ($16). Eighty percent barrel fermented and 20 percent stainless steel, this wine exhibits a lovely toast oak nose and abundant ripe tropical fruit flavors. Great value.
Folie a` Deux Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2011 ($18). This wine shows an appealing ripe cherry nose and is very smooth and elegant in the mouth with nice spice and cherry notes and an alluring complexity. www.insidenorthernnevada.com
Tips from the experts — Refreshing summer sippers The
WINE GUYS Recommend
Tom Marquardt and Patrick Darr
With summer well under way, we are spending more time on our decks and boats. Many of you have celebrations and parties scheduled in the next couple of months. And, even if you don’t, sitting by the poolside with a glass of chilled white wine is appealing. Are we right? Hot temperatures call for simple wines that can be chilled without impacting their flavors. Thankfully, these wines don’t have to be expensive. If you prefer cold pastas, fruit plates, veggie trays, salads and the like, chilled white wines will do well. One wine you should consider is Soave in the Veneto region of northeast Italy. The Soave made in the plains is inexpensive, simple and not very complex. Those soaves made on hillsides are of better quality, but come at a higher price. These wines are called either Classico Superiore DOCG or Colli Scaligeri Superiore DOCG. The difference may be the amount of trebbiano toscano grapes that are n the blend - this is a variety not allowed in DOCG wines. The common grape variety used in all Soave is garganega. Italy produces more than Soave. Pinot grigio continues to grow in popularity and varieties like greco, arneis, verdicchio and vernaccia offer very crisp, refreshing wines for summer quaffing. Here are several white wines, including soaves, we recommend for backyard sipping: Cantina di Soave Re Midas Soave 2012 ($10). Great value, simple and fresh. Made entirely from garganega grapes. Cantini di Soave Rocca Sveva Soave Classico 2012 ($16). Nice dimension in this step-up from a common soave. Made entirely from garganega grapes, it sports apple notes and crisp acidity. Inama “Vin Soave” Soave Classico DOC 2011 ($15). Elegant profile with a flowery nose and mineral and almond notes mingled with apple flavors. Inama Vigneti di Foscarino 2010 ($24). The aromas are more assertive in this interesting soave. Honey and elder flower notes are followed by apple and mineral flavors. Aia Vecchia Vermentino Maremma Toscana IGT 2011 ($11). Composed entirely of vermentino

grapes, this refreshing wine has grass and grapefruit flavors and a medium body to make it a nice sipping wine. Terras Gauda O Rosal 2012 ($24). We loved the tantalizing flavors of this Spanish blend of albarino, loureiro and caino blanco grapes. From the Rias Baixas region that brings us the wonderful albarinos, this wine has generous peach and baked apple notes with a dash of pine and mineral. It would be great with crab and other seafood dishes. Atalon Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2012 ($20). This is a vibrant, crisp sauvignon blanc that would do well as an aperitif or with appetizers. Citrus notes abound with a dash of mineral. Waterstone Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2012 ($18). Lemon and tangerine flavors characterize this quaffable sauvignon blanc. Good balance and nice herbal notes keep it interesting. Stonestreet Terrace Ridge Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2011 ($35). This Bordeaux-style blend is a tantalizing spin on sauvignon blanc. Using mountain-grow grapes, it has a range of aromas and flavors. Fig, mango and lemongrass are just a few.

The fruit is drawn from Lake and Mendocino counties. A dash of muscat and chardonnay is added to the blend to give it some roundness and dimension. Grapefruit and melon notes highlight the wine.
