CELEBRATING THE START OF SUMMER IN VIENNA! Those attending the ViVa! Vienna! celebration held over the Memorial Day weekend had to dodge some raindrops on occasion, but the result was worth it – about 100,000 people turned up for the annual start-of-summer-season festivities that spanned three days in the town. With the recent spring rains followed by warmer weather, the Fairfax County Health Department is encouraging residents to “tip and toss” any water-holding containers and take other steps to protect against mosquitoes that can carry diseases, including the Zika virus. Zika is primarily transmitted to people by the bite of an infected Aedes-species mosquito, though less frequently, transmission may also occur between men and their sexual partners, from a pregnant woman to her fetus, and possibly through blood transfusion. So far, all 544 confirmed cases in the U.S. – including 15 in Virginia – have been associated with international travel. There are no currently confirmed mosquito-to-human transmissions in the continental U.S. However, now that mosquito season is here, there is concern that local mosquitoes could potentially spread the virus. “Zika can be scary because there is still so much to be learned about this emerging disease threat,” says Dr. Gloria Addo-Ayensu, the Fairfax County government’s health director. “But it’s important to remember that there are actions we can all take to protect ourselves, our families and our community

11th-District Republicans Ponder Connolly Challenge BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Fairfax County Republican Committee delegates have rejected one potential candidate to run against U.S. Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-11th) in the Nov. 8 election and now must act quickly if they wish to find another challenger for the four-term incumbent. County GOP delegates at a May 14 convention rejected the candidacy of Republican John Wolfe by a 3-to-1 margin, said Paul Prados, 11th District committee chairman, whom convention delegates elected to a two-year term. He succeeds outgoing chairman Terry Wear. Wolfe’s absence from the proceedings probably did not endear him to delegates, said county GOP chairman Matt Ames. “It’s always bad when you don’t show up at your own convention,” Ames said. The committee members’ vote concerning that Wolfe was binding, Prados said. The 10-member 11th District committee now must decide whether to field another candidate in time to meet the state’s June 14 filing deadline, said Prados, who acknowledged unseating Connolly would be an uphill battle. “A sitting incumbent in a Democratplus-15 district will be difficult to beat,”

he said. Connolly, a former Providence District supervisor who later chaired the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, has had an easy time of it at the polls during the three of his four congressional runs. He won 54.7 percent of the vote to Republican Keith Fimian’s 43 percent in 2008, allowing Connolly to succeed seven-term U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R). Connolly received 61 percent of the vote to Republican Chris Perkins’ 35.5 percent in 2012 and defeated Republican Suzanne Scholte in 2014 with 56.9 percent of the vote to Scholte’s 40.4 percent. The one close call Connolly suffered was in 2010, when he squeaked by with 49.2 percent of the ballots compared with return challenger Fimian’s 48.8 percent. Just 981 votes separated the winner and loser in that election, in which voters cast 226,951 ballots. Probably adding to Fimian’s heartburn were three additional challengers – independent Christopher DeCarlo, Libertarian David Dotson and Green Party candidate David Willis Jr. – who received 0.8, 0.6 and 0.4 percent of the votes, respectively. Voter turnout in 11th District races historically has been significantly higher during presidential-election years than in other years.

Plan Advances to Build Full-Size Athletic Field in Tysons BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on May 17 unanimously approved a proposal to build a full-sized, rectangular athletic field adjacent to the Capital Beltway in Tysons. Meridian Science 7980 LP will build the field and a parking garage on a 5.75acre parcel at 7910 and 7900 Science Application Court. The site’s existing office buildings will remain for the time being, county planning staff said. The field will be 180 by 360 feet, with 15 feet of buffer space on all sides. The buffer area around the playing field’s northeast corner will be trimmed to accommodate a Fairfax County water-line easement near the Beltway. The field also will be surrounded by a containment structure up to 30 feet tall to prevent errant balls from landing on nearby roads. The structure will consist of a see-through, welded-wire fence. The athletic field will be illuminated by

six 50-foot-tall poles equipped with lightemitting diode (LED) lights. In order to limit noise from the site, the applicant will build a sound wall along the field’s northern and eastern edges. Fairfax County Park Authority officials will receive a public-access easement at the site. Provision of athletic fields in Tysons has been a key element of the urban center’s comprehensive plan, but finding space for such amenities is no simple task. The applicant agreed to build the new field as part of a commitment related to The Boro mixed-use redevelopment, located in central Tysons. “It was not easy,” Supervisor Linda Smyth (D-Providence) said of shoehorning the field into Tysons. “No one mentioned the major water line under the edge of the playing field that had to be approved and work [needed] with Fairfax Water to make it all come out level and even.” Another potential wrinkle for the field

is the ongoing controversy regarding the use of crumb-rubber synthetic turf. Fairfax County officials are waiting for results of federal studies concerning the health and environmental impacts of using such turf, County Executive Edward Long told the supervisors. “We’re monitoring the situation,” he said. “We’re very concerned.” Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova (D) expressed support for the

project. “It has been a challenge to provide playing fields and athletic facilities and we’re really pleased to see this work out,” she said. Smyth concurred and recommended the project commence forthwith. “I hope you’ll get this field built quickly,” she told the applicant. “The fields on Jones Branch [Drive in Tysons] are always in use and we can use some more.”

D.C. Region Still Is Lagging in Home-Price Appreciation The Washington metropolitan area’s homes market didn’t fare too badly during the depths of the recession. But it continues to underperform as the national real-estate market rebounds. The median sales price of singlefamily homes across the region stood at $370,400 during the first quarter of 2016, among the highest in the nation. But the year-over-year rate of growth, just 0.7 percent, was well below the 6.3-percent rate recorded nationally. Figures were reported by the National Association of Realtors, which calculated the median sales price of single-family properties nationally at $217,600 during the quarter, up from $204,700 during the first three months of 2015. “The housing market did show resilience and had its best quarter [for existing4

home sales] since 2007,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist of the National Association of Realtors. “The demand for buying is there,” Yun said, but was being held back in part due to a lack of inventory in the existinghomes market, in part due to a relatively paltry number of new homes being constructed. Nationally, the median sales price increased in 154 of 178 metropolitan areas, or 87 percent. That’s an improvement from the fourth quarter of 2015, when 81 percent of metro areas saw year-over-year increases. The Washington region had the 14th highest median sales price nationally, albeit well below the $970,900 recorded in San Jose and the $700,000-plus found in the San Francisco, Honolulu and Ana-

heim metropolitan areas. At the other end of the scale, the lowest median sales prices for the quarter were found in Cumberland (Md.) at $67,400 and Youngstown (Ohio) at $77,500. Median sales prices rose in all four geographic areas of the county, led by the Midwest (up 7.1 percent to $167,900) and West (rising 7.1 percent to $315,900). The growth rate was 5.8 percent in the South (to $192,100) and a less robust 1.8 percent in the Northeast ($249,400). Despite a small increase in the national family median income to $68,431, housing affordability declined during the quarter due to increases in mortgage rates. But market activity is healthy, said National Association of Realtors president Tom Salomone. “Without much newly constructed

www.insidenova.com

housing stock coming onto the market, existing homes, competitively priced, in many areas are going under contract very quickly,” he said. In the condo marketplace, the median sales price in the fourth quarter was $204,700, up 5.8 percent from $193,500. In the Washington region, the median price of $262,000 was down 2 percent from a year before. Figures represent most, but not all, properties that sold during the period. All figures are preliminary, and are subject to revision. Our View: Have Republicans Ceded the 11th?

Republican John Wolfe was the lone candidate to file for the GOP nomination to take on U.S. Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-11th) in November, so you’d think odds were in his favor that the nomination would be his. Au contraire: Wolfe didn’t both to show up at the 11th District Republican Convention, and the party faithful then, in lopsided fashion, rejected him as the nominee. “It’s always bad when you don’t show up at your own convention,” deadpanned Matt Ames, Fairfax County’s Republican chairman, to our Brian Trompeter. The situation leaves Republican leaders in the 11th with two options: Find a new nominee before the June 14 filing deadline, or, for the first time since the 11th District was reconstituted in 1992, be without a standard-bearer. This sad state of affairs for Republicans in the 11th dates to 2010, when Keith Fimian oh-so-narrowly lost to Connolly, who first won office two years before. That 2010 race was a case of conservatives’ using their hearts rather than their heads: Had the party nominated slightly more centrist Fairfax Supervisor Patrick Her-

rity (R-Springfield), it’s likely Herrity would have defeated Connolly that November. Whether he could have held the seat two years later – against Connolly or another Democratic comer – is a question that can’t be answered with specificity, but it can be said that Connolly’s victory that year effectively cemented him as congressman-for-life in the 11th. Having thus far found no candidate to take on the incumbent must be doubly galling for the GOP, since Connolly has proved himself such a gleeful excoriator of that party’s policies. Exactly how effective that makes him in a Republican-controlled House of Representatives is almost beyond the point; Connolly, like Don Beyer in the neighboring 8th District, hopes lightning strikes and Democrats in November yank back control of the House that they lost in 2010. Until then, the Democrats are largely irrelevant. Republicans are unlikely to unseat either Connolly or Beyer. But at least in the 8th, the GOP has come up with a nominee. In the 11th, the clock is ticking for the party to get any candidate at all.

Is Comstock Going to Embrace Trump, or Not? Editor: It appears that Donald Trump has won over the Republican Party establishment and, in short order, will win the endorsement of House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republican members of the House, like Barbara Comstock. There is no indication that Trump will compromise his controversial positions on any key issue, but only five Republican members of Congress have openly repudiated Trump’s candidacy. If Comstock follows the crowd, her campaign for re-election will be a campaign to support Trump’s take-over of the nation’s leadership.

Virginia’s 10th Congressional District was represented by Frank Wolf for over 30 years. Such a tenure was earned every two years through his dedication to the interests of the district’s constituents. Frank Wolf was no ideologue. That is why it is frustrating to see Wolf’s successor, Barbara Comstock, focused instead on her own political advancement. If Comstock jumps on the Trump bandwagon, it will not reflect anything other than political expediency. She has condemned Trump’s anti-woman, anti-immigrant, pro-torture pronouncements and attributed his business suc-

cess to “Daddy’s money.” However, now that Trump is the Republican nominee, Comstock cannot afford to stick to her principles. Her dream of being elected to the United States Senate would be impossible if she did. Fortunately, voters in the 10th District have another option – electing LuAnn Bennett, who has demonstrated dedication to the interests and values of Northern Virginia without filtering her positions through the lens of political expediency. Arnold Goldsmith McLean

Editor: For the strongest education for our children and for economic prosperity, Fairfax County must implement a meals tax. We all know the critical nature of the best education for all children, but we need reminding that the highest quality schools also yield the highest housing

prices. Currently, Fairfax County is losing too many top teachers to neighboring school districts, especially Arlington County, that pay higher salaries. A meals tax will raise crucial revenues for schools, infrastructure and social services. Few, if any, people avoid eating out in the District of Columbia, Arling-

ton or Alexandria because they impose a meals tax. Few, if any, will decline to eat out in Fairfax County, either. Lets all get behind the meals tax for the benefit of our children and to maintain quality schools that raise the value of our homes. Dennis and Shirley Bloomquist Great Falls

Vienna Town Council Votes to Up Development Charges BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Vienna Town Council members on May 23 unanimously approved a raft of zoning-review fee increases, the first such hikes since 2011. The Council formally will adopt the new fees June 6 and the increases will take effect July 1 at the start of fiscal year 2017. The town will increase the cost of obtaining variances from $300 to $500; boost the current $400 cost for a conditional-use permit to $500 for residential cases and $1,000 for commercial ones; increase the fee for occupancy permits from $50 to $75; and hike the fee for driveways from $40 to $75. The town also will boost fees for residential building permits from a $40 base

charge plus 5 cents per square foot to $550 for new single-family dwellings, $225 for large additions and $75 for all other projects. Commercial building-permit fees will jump from an $80 base fee plus 10 cents per square foot to a $100 base fee plus 15 cents per square foot. Site-plan fees also will increase from $1,800 plus $30 per 1,000 square feet of new construction to $2,000 plus $250 per acre for major developments, or $200 per sheet for minor projects. The charge for subdivisions will increase from $700 plus $30 per lot to $3,000 plus $150 per lot. The biggest change is the six-fold increase in rezoning fees from $2,000 to $12,000. The higher fee, which was prompted by costs associated with the Maple Avenue Commercial (MAC) zone,

also includes a site-plan review, making the combined charge less than that levied in surrounding areas. Town officials said the fee increases would add about $40,000 more to the town’s coffers annually. Despite the price hikes, the town’s fees compare favorably with those charged by neighboring jurisdictions, Vienna officials said. “We’re not the highest in any category and we’re not the lowest,” said Vienna Planning and Zoning Director Patrick Mulhern. The Council’s public hearing on the matter drew only one speaker, developer and Vienna resident Mark Stahl, who said

builders are not as well off as some people presume. “It appears we’re making tons of money, but sometimes that’s not the case,” he said. Developers often are required to install public improvements as part of their projects, including costly stormwater-management facilities to protect the environment, Stahl said. “With the fees continuing to go up, it’s becoming harder and harder to meet all the requirements that the town is requiring,” he said. “So there are all these benefits developers bring to the table, yet we’re going to be asked to pony up more.”

McLean Leaders Celebrate Project’s Groundbreaking BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Leaders of The JBG Cos. joined local and state officials May 25 in breaking ground for The Signet, a mixed-use development with residential units and retail space in downtown McLean. The project, which will be built at 6900 Fleetwood Road near Elm Street, will provide 123 one-level luxury condominiums and about 5,000 square feet of restaurants and streetfront stores, plus underground parking. “I think we ought to do this more often,” said Supervisor John Foust (DDranesville). “McLean is an opportunity waiting to happen, in my opinion, and we are so fortunate JBG spotted that opportunity. Everything we’re looking for in downtown McLean is being delivered as part of this project.” The project benefited from copious input supplied by community residents and organizations, said Greg Trimmer, principal at The JBG Cos., which is based in Chevy Chase. The community wanted the development to provide a pedestrian-friendly mix of uses and a meaningful number of housing units to draw in residents, as well as add new vibrancy to downtown McLean, he said. Local residents also wanted some new restaurants, and for an asphalt parking expanse to be put to better use.

“This is really a cutting-edge project,” said state Sen. Barbara Favola (D-31st). “You had to have a vision and you had to convince a lot of your friends and neighbors and citizens that being a little different, [that] building up was a good thing . . . Having a range of different housing options allows the community to age in place and allows you to house individuals from a wider income range, which is good because all of these folks contribute to a very vibrant economy.” The condominiums will include onebedroom units with dens, selling from $800,000 and up; two-bedroom units selling for $1.2 million and more; two-bedroom condominiums with dens, which will sell for $1.5 million or more; and three-bedroom units costing $1.8 million or more. The Signet will offer concierge service, a fitness center and lounge for residents. Sales for the project will begin this fall, and construction will take about two years to complete. The building was designed by Franck & Lohsen Architects, with Page Architects being the firm of record, project officials said. The project’s general contractor is Davis Construction; Bill Rooney Studios designed the site’s interiors. Bailey Edelson, vice president of development for JBG, said company officials began presenting concept sketches of The Signet to McLean residents in 2012. The

seven-story structure with brick façade will be “very Neoclassical, Jeffersonian and traditional,” she said. “It will fit into the fabric of McLean.” An existing 100,000-square-foot office building will remain on the site. The project will make far better use of the remain-

ing part of the parcel, which now is covered largely with asphalt, Edelson said. “If you look at it from above, you sort of see this hole, which is this parking lot,” she said. “What we wanted to do was fill in that hole in a way that the building looked as if it had always been there.” The site will feature gardens, walking paths, sitting areas, a small playground and a park open to the public, Edelson said. The project also will put in better sidewalks and underground utilities. “We’re really excited about the reawakening of McLean and making it a more Continued on Page 18

Public-Safety Notes ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE GRAVELY INJURES PERSON IN MERRIFIELD:

Fairfax County police are investigating the accidental discharge of a firearm, which occurred May 22 at around 11:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of Stillwood Circle in Merrifield. The suspect and victim were in a vehicle together when the suspect allegedly accidentally shot the victim in the upper body, police said. Rescue personnel transported the victim, who suffered lifethreatening injuries, to a local hospital. Charges are pending, police said. POLICE INVESTIGATING COLLISION INVOLVING FIRE CHIEF: Fairfax County

Fire Chief Richard Bowers notified the county’s Department of Public Safety Communications on May 26 at 8:01 a.m. that he just had been involved in a motorvehicle collision on Route 29 at its intersection with the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286). Patrol officers from the police department’s Fair Oaks District Station responded and located the crash. The accident occurred as Bowers, who was on duty, was driving his assigned county vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, southbound on the Route 29 ramp approaching the ramp to northbound Route 286. A 2002 BMW, driven by a 36-year-old Fairfax-area man, was on the northbound

Route 286 ramp approaching Route 29. The front of the Tahoe collided with the right side of the BMW in the intersection, police said. Rescue personnel transported the BMW’s driver to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Bowers was not injured, police said. Detectives from the police department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit are assisting with the crash investigation, which is ongoing. Deputy County Executive for Public Safety David Rohrer will conduct an administrative review of the incident. ‘TARGETED PATROLS’ YIELD SUMMONSES, ARRESTS: Officers from the

Fairfax County Police Department’s McLean District Station patrolled the McLean area May 22 in search of drunk drivers. Police issued four summonses and authorities charged one person with driving while intoxicated. In addition, officers from the department’s Operations Support Bureau patrolled the county looking for drunk drivers. Police issued 11 summonses and authorities charged one motorist with driving while intoxicated.

FIREARM STOLEN FROM VEHICLE IN VIENNA DRIVEWAY: A resident living

in the 500 block of Truman Circle, S.W.,

told Vienna police May 18 at 7:56 p.m. that someone had rummaged through a vehicle parking in the complainant’s driveway and stolen a firearm from inside the vehicle. VIENNA LOUNGE CITED FOR NOISE VIOLATION: A Vienna resident called town

police on May 22 at 1:57 a.m. to report that loud music was coming from Bey Lounge, 303 Mill St., N.E. A responding officer could hear loud music coming from the establishment when patrons opened the front door. The officer issued the lounge’s business manager a citation for violating the town’s noise ordinance. ARREST MADE FOR ALLEGED PRESCRIPTION FRAUD: Vienna police dis-

patched officers to Vienna Rexall Drug Center, 150 Maple Ave., W., on May 24 at 11:53 a.m. after receiving a report that a fraud was occurring. Upon arrival, the officers were met by another Vienna police officer who had detained a suspect who police said had attempted to pass fraudulent prescriptions. Police arrested the 28-year-old Herndon resident for prescription fraud and transported the suspect to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

CHARGE: Several people called Vienna police on May 24 at 2:34 p.m. to report a vehicle had struck another vehicle in the 200 block of Tapawingo Road, S.W., and then fled the scene. The struck vehicle was occupied by three people, whom rescue personnel transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Witnesses told police the striking vehicle was down the street on Hillcrest Drive, S.W., and its driver still was in the driver’s seat. Vienna police went to that location and made contact with Fairfax County firefighters and Emergency Medical Services personnel who had responded to the accident. The striking vehicle’s driver refused rescue treatment. Police then offered the driver, who showed signs of possible impairment, the opportunity to take fieldsobriety tests, but the driver refused. Police arrested the 52-year-old Vienna resident on charges of felony hit-and-run, driving while intoxicated and refusing to submit to an official breath test. Police then transported the driver to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

Median Age of Realtors Is Coming Down The median age and years of experience of Realtors has decreased as new and younger professionals enter the industry, according to the 2016 National Association of Realtors Member Profile. The survey’s results are representative of the nation’s nearly 1.2 million Realtors, who account for about half of all active real-estate licensees in the U.S. Realtors’ median age decreased from 57 in 2014 to 53 in 2015, the lowest it has been since 2008, when the median age was 52. The typical member reported a median of 10 years of experience in real estate, down from 12 years in last year’s report. The National Association of Realtors “is excited to have young, fresh perspectives enter the industry, and we are proud to offer resources for our younger members to advance and grow,” said NAR president Tom Salomone, broker-owner of Real Estate II Inc. in Coral Springs, Fla. In last year’s report, 41 percent of members were more than 60 years old, while only 2 percent were under age 30. This year, the percent of Realtors over 60 years old dropped to 30 percent, and the number of those younger than 30 years rose to 5 percent. Thirteen percent of members who have two years or less experience are under 30 years of age. New members also tend to be more diverse than experienced members; 89 percent of Realtors with 16 or more years of experience are white, compared to only 78 percent of those with two years or less experience. The median gross income of Realtors fell last year, from $45,800 in 2014 to $39,200 in 2015. Those with 16 years or more of experience reported a median gross income of $73,400, up from $68,800 in 2014, while members with two years or less of experience had a median gross income of $8,500, a decrease from $9,100 last year. For the third year in a row, Realtors cited difficulty finding the right property, at 38 percent, as the most persistent challenge limiting potential buyers, beating out obtaining mortgage financing at 19 percent. “Limited inventory continues to restrict buyers in many markets across the country,” said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist.

McLean, Madison Move On

Teeing Off

Premature Loss Can Be A Tough Pill to Swallow It happens all the time and can be a harsh experience when an earlier-thanexpected end to a team’s high school season comes in the postseason.

Dave Facinoli

Teams Could Meet In Regional Semis A Staff Report

The possibility very much exists that the Madison Warhawks and McLean could SOFTBALL Highlanders meet in the girls softball championship game of the 6A North Region Tournament. So far, both high school teams are 2-0 in the competition and have to win semifinal games on May 31 to advance to the final. In those semifinals, Madison (22-3) plays the South Lakes Seahawks and McLean (21-4) hosts the Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets. Madison was 2-0 against South Lakes in two close regular-season games and McLean topped Osbourn Park, 5-3, March 25. In May 26 quarterfinal games, host Madison blanked West Potomac, 2-0, and McLean routed visiting Centreville, 14-2. For Madison, right-hander Kate Vannicola threw a three-hitter and fanned 12. With the bat, Cat Arase had two hits. Kristin Giery, Cameron Pistilli, Kristy Williams, Peyton Thomas and Blake Bracket all had one hit. Continued on Page 17

Langley Boys, Oakton Girls in Region Final 4 A Staff Report

The Langley Saxons in boys soccer and the Oakton Cougars in girls have advanced to the semiSOCCER finals of the 6A North Region Tournaments. Both high school teams are 2-0 in the competition so far, including quarterfinal victories on May 26. Langley (14-1-3) downed the host Lake Braddock Bruins, 3-1, and Oakton (16-1) nipped the Madison Warhawks, 1-0, in an all-Vienna game. For the Oakton girls, Alex Marquis scored the goal with an assist from Anya Heijst. Goalie Sam Weaver made a num16

ber of key saves. The win was the 16th in a row for Oakton. Madison finished the season with a 13-2-2 record, including a firstround 2-0 region win over Osbourn Park, with Rachel Jackson scoring both goals. Oakton nipped South County, 1-0, in the first round on a goal by Tess Sapone. Oakton hosted T.C. Williams in the June 1 semifinals. For the defending champion Langley boys in their 3-1 win over Lake Braddock, Claudio Conde, Taylor Hosley and Timmy Le scored goals. Langley won by the same 3-1 score over Osbourn

Park in the first round. In that win, Shayan Harandi scored two goals and Cameron Bacso one. Langley was scheduled to face Washington-Lee (14-1-2) in the June 1 semifinal. The teams tied during an early regular-season meeting. The Oakton boys team (15-1-1) had its season end with a 2-1 quarterfinal loss to Washington-Lee on May 26. Tyler Morgan scored Oakton’s goal. Oakton defeated Mount Vernon, 3-1, in the first round. Justin Smith, Bryan Silver and Michael Ku-Diperto scored the goals. For region semifinal results, visit www.insidenova.com/sports/fairfax.

On the public-school level throughout Virginia, those premature exits usually come during region tournaments, with first-round, second-round and sometimes semifinal losses. Such a stingy setback occurred for the Langley Saxons in girls lacrosse. Langley was projected as a team that would make a strong run at challenging for region and state championships this spring. An undefeated regular-season record was the proof. Then came the region playoffs, where Langley suffered a close second-round loss to the defending state champion Robinson Rams. Season over sooner than anticipated. The Washington-Lee Generals baseball team played its best late in the regular season and conference playoffs. There was an upset over defending state champ Madison, proof that W-L could play with the best, igniting legitimate hopes of making a strong run in the region tournament. Didn’t happen. One bad half inning cost the Generals in a 4-2 season-ending first-round loss to Patriot, leaving the team a bit disappointed. In boys soccer, the Oakton Cougars and Washington-Lee entered their second-round region showdown with only one loss between them. From before the 2016 campaign began back in early March, both squads had high expectations of finishing as region and state champions. With Oakton losing to Washington-Lee, its season ended far sooner than hoped. The same occurred in girls region soccer, when neighborhood rivals Oakton and the Madison Warhawks met in the second round, with the loser unable to achieve what it so much wished was waiting ahead. Such difficult losses are a reality of team sports.

Marshall Wins Another by One to Reach Region Semis DAVE FACINOLI Staff Writer

So far, the Marshall Statesmen have been a one-run club of nail-biting drama in the postseason. The high school baseball team has played three playoff games and won by a single BASEBALL each run. The latest was May 26 when host Marshall (19-1) nipped the Atlee Raiders from Mechanicsville, 3-2, in a second-round contest of the 5A North Region Tournament. “These close games keep us focused and pushing through and executing until the end,” said Marshall senior pitcher Steven Johel, who threw a complete game to get the win against Atlee and improve to 7-0. “We’re used to that pressure.”

Marshall High School’s Steven Johel got the win against Atlee. PHOTO BY DAVE FACINOLI

Johel said the approach of attacking the Atlee batters with inside fastballs

worked well, keeping them off-balance. He threw 99 pitches, allowed eight hits and one unearned run, walked one and struck out six. “He was excellent,” Marshall coach Aaron Tarr said about Johel. Atlee scored its first run in the top of the first. Marshall answered with a run in the last of the inning when Robbie Guenther was hit in the back with the ball while running to first, enabling a runner to come home. The Statesmen added two in the fourth on an RBI bloop single by Johel and a run-scoring single by Ben Kerns. With the help of two errors and a hit batter, Atlee scored one in the top of the sixth and threatened to tie when Marshall third baseman Nate Scheinman fielded a grounder and threw out the runner at first to end the inning and

threat. “Nate is really good defensively and quick at third with a good arm, and he gets the ball away,” Tarr said. “I think that took away how Atlee likes to bunt and changed their strategy because they saw they couldn’t go after him.” Johel retired the side in order in the seventh, with a game-ending strikeout. Scheinman, Jack Jones and Nick Cintron had Marshall’s other hits. Marshall next hosts Potomac in the semifinals on Wednesday, June 1. The region final is June 3. Mountain View and Halifax play in the other semifinal. Mountain View is the only team that has defeated Marshall this season. Marshall lost in the region finals and state finals to Stone Bridge last year. NOTE: Marshall has won four of its last five games by a single run.

In singles action against Robinson, Madison’s winners were Luke Sablik at No. 2, Connor Smith at No. 3, Clark Bowden at No. 4 and Conner Castellaw at No. 6. Ravi Suresh at No. 1 and Aryan Ossareh at No. 5 lost in two sets. Suresh and Bowden won at No. 2 doubles to clinch the match. Madison downed T.C. Williams, 6-3, in the first round. McLean (15-1) defeated Battlefield, 5-0, in its quarterfinal match and Lake Braddock, 5-0, in the first round. McLean defeated Madison twice in two close Liberty Conference regularseason matches. The winner of the region semifinal faces the winner of the Westfield vs. Chantilly match.

In doubles, Keyser and Jing Waid of McLean finished second and Sablik and Connor Smith of Madison were third. The win over Centreville gave McLean five straight victories. Since this container-breeding mosquito doesn’t fly far from where it lays its eggs, the most effective way to prevent the spread of Zika through mosquitoes is by eliminating breeding sites in backyards. Because these mosquitoes breed in artificial containers rather than storm ponds, ditches or marshlands, it is critical that residents survey their properties weekly

and tip and toss artificial containers that can hold standing water, no matter how small. Containers that people wish to keep (wheelbarrows, children’s wading pools, 5-gallon buckets) can be turned over or stored indoors when not in use. County officials also suggest using pesticide to kill mosquito larvae in water that cannot be removed. These products can be found at local stores.

Fairfax County Notes FAIRFAX SCHOOLS TAKE STATEWIDE HONORS: Fifty-two Fairfax County pub-

lic schools have earned a 2016 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) award for advanced learning and achievement from Gov. McAuliffe and the Virginia Board of Education. The awards recognize schools that exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board. In the Sun Gazette coverage area, Kilmer Middle and Longfellow Middle were among three Fairfax County schools and eight statewide that received the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, the highest VIP award presented. Twenty-six Fairfax County public schools received the 2016 Board of Education Excellence Award, the second level in the ranking. Among schools in the Sun Gazette coverage area, Chesterbrook Elementary, Churchill Road Elementary, Colvin Run Elementary, Franklin Sherman Elementary, Great Falls Elementary, Haycock Elementary, Langley High, James Madison High, Navy Elementary, Oakton High, Spring Hill Elementary, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology, Vienna Elementary and Wolftrap Elementary received the honor.

Twenty-three Fairfax County public schools received the 2016 Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award, the third level in the competition. Among Sun Gazette-area schools, Cooper Middle, Flint Hill Elementary, Forestville Elementary, Kent Gardens Elementary, Lemon Road Elementary and Thoreau Middle received the award. FAIRFAX TO SURVEY RESIDENTS ON EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: The

Fairfax County Health Department will conduct a survey in a representative sampling of neighborhoods to determine the overall emergency-preparedness efforts of county residents. Staff and volunteers will be going door to door on June 4 and 5, asking residents to participate in the anonymous survey. “Neighborhoods and households will be selected at random,” county officials said. “Participation in the survey is voluntary and confidential. Respondents will not be asked to identify themselves, and their address will not be included in the results.” Each survey will take about 10-15 minutes and will include questions of residents such as: do they have an emergency supply kit; do they have a working generator and carbon monoxide detector; would they be able to evacuate in the event of a

www.insidenova.com

large-scale disaster; and if they have pets, do they have supplies and a plan for what they will do with them during an evacuation? “The answers received from the surveys will help us assess our community’s current level of preparedness,” said Dr. Gloria Addo-Ayensu, the county government’s health director. “It will also help us anticipate the community’s needs during an emergency.” FCPS OFFERS REVIEW OF SEX-ED MATERIALS: Fairfax County Public Schools

is soliciting public review and comment on instructional materials (media, print and lesson objectives) under consideration for Family Life Education (FLE). Recommendations affect grades 9, 10, 11, and students with low incidence disabilities in grades 3-10. FLE instructional materials may be accessed online through June 24, for public review and comment at www.fcps. edu/is/hpe/fle.shtml. Because of copyright permissions, not all materials are available online. Media titles and the recommended books are available during the comment period at all high schools during regular school hours. Community members are asked to schedule an appointment with the librarian. June 2, 2016 23
