AMBASSADORS Inside Dance kicks off the year with our Focus On Fitness Issue and thought this would be the perfect to time to ask our iD Ambassadors, “What fitness exercise and/or program do you choose outside the studio for conditioning and strength?” ERIC Cross-training is so important for body strength. As a male dancer, I lift weights to build my muscles. This has helped me in partnering, stability and control. I love yoga for lengthening the muscles and deepening flexibility. Dancing strengthens the body, but if you want to become even stronger and gain more control, try yoga, Pilates, or something that builds muscular endurance.

JULIE Happy New Year! When working on my fitness outside of the studio, I prefer to focus on sprint interval training to improve my aerobic conditioning, along with high intensity circuits for strength training. This type of workout has been most enjoyable and effective for me personally, but everyone is different. It’s important to find a workout that fits you and your body!

PAYTON Outside of my dance training, I enjoy taking Yogalates classes on my one day off - I don’t always make the 5:00am class, it’s my favorite, but the 6:00pm class is great, too. The combination of yoga and Pilates helps with core-strengthening and flexibility, and really works up a sweat! I also try to run at least a mile in my neighborhood three times a week.

MACKENZIE I hope you all have had an amazing December filled with lots of fun and joy! Something I do outside of dance in order to strengthen my muscles and mind is Pilates. Pilates is something I have started more recently, but so far I have no complaints. In the short amount of time I have been doing Pilates, it has already helped me a lot. For example, earlier this year my hips were starting to cause me some pain but after a few classes of Pilates, the pain has gone away. Not only do I love Pilates for the physical aspect of it but I also love how I feel mentally when I come out of a class. This is why I love Pilates - I hope you all try it, too. Have a great rest of your January and a very happy and merry New Year!

KAELI I dance pretty much seven days a week, so I don’t really have a workout routine other than that. I do stretch/strengthen my feet and work my turn-out every night. I also try to fit crunches into each day.

BROOKE I hope you all had an amazing Christmas! Some fitness exercise and programs for the conditioning and strengthening I do outside of the studio are Pilates. I love Pilates because it’s helped me so much in everything I do. It has helped me strengthen smaller muscles, taught me how to use muscles I never even knew how to, and it’s helped to lengthen my muscles so they are long instead of compact. Pilates is a great way to strengthen your muscles and it’s not super hard on the body, so you can take a class and come out feeling better than you did when you came in. I hope you all have a great January and a Happy New Year!

MARI Well, I am very lucky to have a conditioning class at my dance studio every day before ballet. We work on weight lifting and core exercises. It also really helps with balance when we use the exercise balls, but I do also love to work out outside of dance by running through my neighborhood and going on long walks.

HALEY I find it helpful to have a workout buddy so I stay on track and don’t skip. My favorite and most effective workouts are in the gym with a mix of equipment and body weight to build muscle and endurance.

I try to stay active by participating in PE and sports activities at school. I love to play football and basketball!

RYAN In 2017, I will continue working out with my trainer, Chris Martinez, for strength and conditioning.

BRIGGS Many of my teachers and instructors suggest Pilates. I enjoy Pilates because it is a fun and enjoyable way to cross train, and is great cardio especially for someone like me who does not enjoy running a lot. It’s fun to do along with some fun, upbeat music. Another discovery I have found while looking into Pilates is “piyo’ which is a fusion of pilates and yoga. Yoga is great too, especially for flexibility. The two together is the perfect world, and I hope to be able to take more classes over this upcoming semester!

SADORS CHRISTINA

Personally, I love to cross-train. I think it’s so important as a dancer to do so. I love going to the gym and doing cardio/lifting light weights and doing as many reps as I can! The endurance I build at the gym helps so much with my dancing. Also, my favorite thing to do is to take a hot yoga class. I try to go once or twice a week because not only is it great for your body, it’s great for your mind, too!

DERSON

Dance is one of the most valuable parts of me being who I am today. the

VALUE PARTS With over five studios, countless videos, and 20 plus years of experience, Tracy Anderson is one hard-working wonder woman with ever-changing ideas and poignant processes tailor-made for everyone. Describing herself as a researcher, creator, teacher and giver, she loves to see people shine as brightly and as confidently as they possibly can. Her expertise in dance has provided a large bank of fitness super-content. Anderson feels she was given an opportunity to teach the connection of science and the brain to the muscles. “I feel strongly that it’s an important discipline for everyone. We are all emotionally programmed to love to move - developing that sense of connection, developing security and a relationship with your physical-self for processing emotions and stress we have so many ways of expressing ourselves, but our physical-self is the most important.” That physical-self, is something Anderson takes genuinely, and super-seriously, abiding by the laws of muscles and connectivity. “It’s like a choreographer getting hired for a very specific piece of music,” she says. “There are laws to the muscles and you have to follow those laws to get to those muscles to keep balance. Within that, you need to keep that communication with your brain constantly strengthening, you need a lot of choreography, and you need to be strategic.” Learning by experience and self-discovery, she says, is the most valuable of all. “We don’t choose the roadblocks that come our way,” Anderson says. “We cannot handle life unless we are strong in our physical self. It’s all about balance and dynamic movement.”
