The New Voula Village Amanda Dardanis explores the new village vibe of Athens’ Most Improved suburb
Something is definitely going on in Sleepy Little Voula. Wedged between its more famous neighbours, Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, Voula is often over-looked. But a wave of internationally-hued new openings and civic upgrades has seen it transform from slightly run-down residential hub of old into a buzzy and cosmopolitan seaside hamlet. Ten years ago, Voula Platea was a handy but parochial mix of grillhouses, hardware and carpet stores, matronly boutiques and butchers. In 2015, Voula sports everything from sushi bars, gourmet delicatessens, designer butchers with in-house DJs, and Irish gastro pubs; to chocolate artisans, chic fashion boutiques that wouldn’t be out of place in Mykonos, hip wine bars like Faidon, and breezy tavernas where you can park yourself on a leafy pavement and drink a micro-brewed Greek beer. As of last week, there’s yet another vibrant newcomer: the architectural allday Oppen on Poseidonos, serving an American-style menu of gourmet burgers, brunch and cocktails. Little wonder many southsiders are now forsaking nights out in Glyfada for Voula’s great variety and village vibe. New Voula’s Greatest Hits DRINK

Southern Comfort in Glyfada For years now, brunch lovers from every nook of Athens have descended Sundays to a buzzy little gastro-café in Monastiraki called Mama Roux. They come as much for its charmed boho vibe, as for the superb international offerings: Croque Mama-Mia (with mozzarella, prosciutto, poached eggs and basil pesto). Scrambled eggs with truffle and chives. Or the Reuben corned beef sandwich on rye (that tastes even better when paired with a cheeky morning-after Bloody Mary). Imagine the rapture among faithful Mama Roux pilgrims when a larger branch opened last week in Glyfada, at the old Flo Café site, on Lazaraki. Four times the size of the Aiolou venue, Mama Roux South, just like the original, is about much more than Sundays.
Week-round, Mama Roux serves up vivid flavours from around the world at mid-range prices (most main dishes sit between €10-15). But without the prissiness that often comes as a side-dish at similar fusion concepts. Mama Roux’s new southern sibling is helmed by Aiolou sous chef Vassilis Sporos. Sporos has taken the tried-and-tested downtown menu and infused it with sultry Southern notes. Billed as Greece’s first true Southern BBQ “joint”, you’ll find “low & slow” plates of baby back ribs, smoked beef brisket and pulled pork, sided with hush puppies, spicy coleslaws or sweet potato fries. The cocktails are pure southern comfort: try their Hurricane brew with dark rum and passionfruit, a smoky julep, or the dreamy buttermilk margarita.
The game has changed for Carrie Mathison. Out of the CIA and living in Berlin, without Saul and Quinn to rely on, she realizes that she has never been at greater risk. Every Monday at 21.50 on FOX.
The hottest ticket in London is now the hottest ticket in Athens with news that Benedict Cumberbatch, feverishly popular British star of small and silver screen, is to rouse the masses in the Greek capital. On Thursday October 15, Cumberbatch’s sell-out performance of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet by the British National Theatre will be broadcast live from the Barbican in London to Megaron Mousikis at 9pm. All-rounder Cumberbatch, best-known for The Imitation Game, Sherlock Holmes (and that infamous female fan-club, the Cumberb****es), has found himself at the centre of his own Shakespearean tempest since taking on the iconic role. Just as King Lear is the ultimate challenge for any veteran actor, Hamlet is deemed the supreme test for any performer in the earlier half of his career. The Harrow-educated actor’s performance in Lyndsey Turner’s production has attracted unrivalled interest from British media, fans and regular theatre-goers. All of them eager to see if Cumberbatch could match up to the greats who’ve played Hamlet over the years; like Laurence Olivier, Kenneth Branagh, Richard Burton and Mel Gibson. After the show’s London debut in August, Cumberbatch also had to famously beg fans to stop filming his performances because it was
“mortifying” to see a sea of red camera lights in the crowd. In the NT version, Cumberbatch’s famously indecisive and petulant Danish prince, is joined by Sian Brooke as a “genuinely disturbed” Ophelia, Jim Norton who has evidently crafted an anxious fusspot of a Polonius, and Leo Bill as stalwart Horatio. Shakespeare’s timeless storylines have been jiggled about by Turner, to rather mixed effect, according to many British reviewers, with one leading critic describing Cumberbatch as a “blazing, five-star Hamlet trapped in a middling, three-star show”. Athenian audiences can, however, expect sumptuous, gloriously detailed sets designed by Es Devlin, coupled with bold cinematic effects. And of course, Benedict. Tickets cost €14. Visit www.megaron.gr
Décor-wise, Mama Roux South is still something of a work-in-progress as they grapple with the huge space. Downstairs, are eclectic elements you’d expect from Mama Roux: a Moroccan mezze corner, wrought iron collages salvaged from churches, a super-size Armenian trombone… while upstairs, a more cosy Mexican hacienda is taking form. The undisputed belle of the ball though is the gargantuan custom-built smoker, parked in full view of patrons. The machine was conceived by Sporos after research recces to America’s best BBQ joints and uses the indirect heat and smoke from the wood fire combustion to slowly braise meat morsels to perfection. Mama Roux founder John Higgins, a San Francisco native and accomplished jazz pianist, believes in taking global food back to its authentic street food origins. It’s where the “real modern cosmopolitanism” lies, says the charismatic Higgins. Mama Roux South, Lazaraki 26, Glyfada. For bookings, 216.700.4459

Niche Perfumery Scent is one of the most delicate yet strong parts of the human sensory experience, as it can evoke certain memories and give off a certain vibe. Understanding this, fashion brands inextricably tie fragrances into their brand stories, employing dreamy models to lure in new customers. Niche perfumers, on the other hand, specialize in conjuring scents outside of the world of celebrity fashion and create made-to-measure scents. Known as “perfumistas” by fashion bloggers, these artist-perfumers literally follow their noses and shun conventional fragrance marketing strategies that appeal to a mass market. In this growing segment of the perfumes market, perfumers let loose their creative flow from

financial or moral bounds, while the act of buying a perfume becomes an initiation quest aimed at fulfilling a deep psychological need. While niche perfumery is a strong trend in mature markets such as the USA and Italy with a dizzying array of niche perfumers entering the fragrance world, it is just starting out in Paris with high-end boutiques providing service and ‘tutorials’ in High Perfumery to discerning and inquisitive consumers. In Greece, the first niche perfumery boutique, the King George Perfumes & More, is the result of a fruitful collaboration between Orloff Spa Experts and the Hotel Grande Bretagne group. Here is a good place to start sniffing and choosing from
perfumers with roots in classic perfumery to talented newcomers with a vision. Let the qualified staff at King George Perfumes & More guide you on your scented quest through a short questionnaire, designed to discover your tastes, moods and souvenirs, and the perfume which best enhances them. Fragrance families like Oriental, Fougère, Chypré, Cuiré, Floral, Fruité, Animalic unfold their mystery through available exclusive brands like Il Profvmo, Amouage, Etat Libre d’orange, Aqua Di Parma.
